1:08 Because if they show up and do a better job then maybe I'm out.

1:12 You but have you had a back thing like this?

1:15 Do you know I've I've only from lifting

1:17 massive weights and doing squat thrusts in the gym

1:19 have I have I injured a couple of muscles you know lats and things like that.

1:23 size weight do you press?

1:25 I do a couple 70 45s.

1:26 How big do they come?

1:29 Whatever's bigger than the 45s.

1:30 I put two of those on each side and I squat.

1:32 Yeah.

1:33 But what what happens is and I mean you can certainly speak to this.

1:37 I would imagine when you smile breathe cough

1:39 sneeze any of that it's massively painful yeah?

1:42 Not with a Norelco.

1:47 [laughter] Have you hurt your back before though?

1:50 Just No not nothing like that.

1:52 Just just a little bit of a strain but nothing quite like that.

1:55 really are the hardest working guy in show business.

1:57 You really are.

1:58 Well I I I've hurt um [applause]

2:04 I've hurt my life by being so busy but but never my back

2:06 but thank you I you know I I have a long day.

2:08 However I just saw you Yes.

2:10 last week when we did the live Idol Gives Back show

2:13 and you were really really wonderful

2:14 in coming and co-hosting [cheering] that show.

2:16 Oh yes.

2:16 And we had um

2:21 We had a good time and you know I thank you

2:24 for your contribution as well and that challenge that you made on the air.

2:27 It was so far they've raised 65 million.

2:30 Almost 70 million dollars.

2:32 That's fantastic.

2:37 [applause] I'll tell you when we are often asked

2:41 to give to something and donate which I'm very happy

2:45 to do and many times you wonder where

2:46 the money goes you don't quite understand where it's going

2:50 to go and I'll be honest I I

2:51 didn't really understand the problems here in the US

2:55 and in Africa until after we took some of these trips

2:57 and I was really touched by it and moved.

3:00 You went with Simon and how was that to go to Africa with Simon?

3:03 Well we were making this trip you know to Africa and he

3:12 called me said I'll only do this if you'll do it with me

3:16 and I thought you know considering our relationship on the air I thought

3:18 all right this is a cool thing let's let's try and do some good.

3:21 So we travel over to Kenya and we get there and we get

3:26 there late at night and the next morning we're going to start very early

3:29 to go into some of these slums

3:30 which are just they're horrendous and these people

3:33 have really really suffered and they suffered more when they saw Simon because

3:40 [laughter] he showed up in the same awful stuff he wears on American Idol.

3:45 I mean there there we are in in this really tough

3:49 place and he's got on these Armani leather boots acid wash jeans

3:54 a pack of cigarettes a cell phone a tight you know

3:58 tight tight t-shirt and I'm just thinking they've been through enough Simon.

5:26 So you know Is it my Yeah it's I mean it's okay like three

5:29 times but on the fourth you got to make a call otherwise you're dead.

5:32 Yeah.

5:33 All right so let's talk about Idols

5:35 because it's down to the six contestants now.

5:37 Yeah.

5:38 What do you When do you find out who's getting kicked out?

5:40 Do you know it depends on the week.

5:42 That one was exceptional so I wanted to know exactly how we're

5:45 going to choreograph that and it all unfolds absolutely live so all

5:49 of the the timing of it you know who we're going to tell first

5:52 and when and how long I stare at them and when I ask them

5:54 to go to the left turn around do a cannonball into the pool

5:58 and look at me before the result comes all of that you know we

6:01 will sort of think of before we go on the air but there

6:04 are times when I'll find out first thing in the morning and there are

6:06 times when I'll find out just before we go live and then there

6:09 are times when we'll I'll find out in the commercial break and that card

6:12 to be honest with you we are I think it's the show's

6:15 gotten more successful and we have fewer people that work on it after

6:18 that and sometimes they don't put anything on that card and so I'll

6:22 open it and I'm thinking God what did they tell me in that meeting

6:24 before we went on the air which Is that what I was going

6:27 to say there you're so close to them how do they not see the name?

6:30 seen it before so now they often if it's

6:32 a tall contestant they won't put the names on the card.

6:35 So if I'm with a short contestant I get a cheat

6:37 sheet but if it's someone that's taller than I am

6:39 which is almost everybody then then you know I so I

6:43 will literally I have been on the air live and read

6:46 the result and kind of waited a beat to make

6:48 sure that it was the right name that no producer like

6:51 JUMPED UP GOING NO WRONG ONE you how could you screw

6:54 that up it's all YOU GOT TO DO ON THIS PROGRAM.

6:56 So what did you ask me though?

6:58 I don't remember.

7:02 [laughter] I don't either.

7:02 No.

7:04 After the Idol Gives Back we went out for dinner

7:06 and then we went to a party and the the contestants

7:09 were there so I got to meet them and hang

7:10 out with them and they're just sweet as can be.

7:12 Well that's the weird thing.

7:13 Yeah.

7:14 They're sweet as they can be which is

7:16 not necessarily the average group on our show.

7:20 really different this year.

7:20 Well I don't want to gossip about any specific contestants.

7:25 All right but some have not been nice.

7:27 Not as the show progresses.

7:28 What happens is they begin to believe

7:29 they're on hype at times but these contestants

7:32 Simon and I have actually said to them so who don't you like?

7:36 Huh?

7:36 I mean you know not to say it on the air but who

7:38 don't you like and they're we love each other all of us.

7:40 Really you do?

7:41 That's weird.

7:42 Yeah.

7:43 So they genuinely have this great relationship they care.

7:47 they seem really great.

7:47 I like them a whole lot all of them.

7:49 So now I don't know who cuz now I

7:51 don't know who my pick Well I can't it's changed.

7:53 Do you know that do you know that Ellen called me?

7:55 We do the show live.

7:57 She calls me as we're doing the show on my cell

8:00 phone and says and there's a message I didn't get it

8:02 cuz I was doing the show and she leaves a message

8:04 hey I know you're probably busy but how do you text again?

8:07 I can't figure out how you text.

8:09 I find say it a hundred times per show or you can text don't dial.

8:12 I don't know how to text and I decided I was going to vote and I

8:15 called and it was busy and then I thought well then how do you text?

8:18 So I called the show and asked how you text.

8:21 [laughter] All right hey you can and I wasn't on pills then that was just me.

8:24 That's the real you that's why we love
