Hot Ones Season 29 Marathon
First We Feast
0:00 I feel like there's water coming out of holes in my face.
0:03 Yeah, that's what happens.
0:04 We're We're squeezed like a sponge.
0:06 Sure,
0:06 a little bit.
0:07 But all that said, there's no place I'd rather be.
0:13 Hey, what's going on everybody for First We Feast.
0:15 I'm Sean Evans and you're watching Hot Ones.
0:17 It's the show with hot questions and even hotter wings.
0:19 And today we're joined by Jason Seagull.
0:21 Hey man.
0:22 He's an actor, writer, and producer you know from films like I Love You Man,
0:24 Forgetting Sarah Marshall, The Muppets, and many more.
0:26 He had a nearly decade long run on the mega hit sitcom How I Met Your Mother.
0:29 And you can also catch him on the acclaimed series Shrinking,
0:32 which returns for its much anticipated third
0:34 season January 28th on Apple TV Plus.
0:36 Jason Seagull, welcome to the show.
0:38 Thanks, Sean.
0:38 I'm really excited to be here.
0:39 What's going through your head as you prepare to take on the gauntlet?
0:42 Are you someone who enjoys spicy food?
0:45 Yeah, I am, but I feel like that's not a fair question.
0:47 Like, this is not designed to be eaten casually, right?
0:50 It's designed to[ __] me up.
0:52 Uh, but I am I'm ready for it.
0:54 I'm excited.
0:54 I feel nervous in my body but calm in my uh heart and mind.
1:21 We just jump right in.
1:22 We start with the wing.
1:24 I see.
1:25 That's how it goes.
1:36 Great.
1:40 I've seen the show when people go, "Oh, great.
1:43 No problem.
1:44 I'm no fool." Have you absorbed any profound words
1:49 of wisdom playing a therapist on television?
1:51 like is there a therapeutic tool that you've discovered by reading
1:54 a script that's actually been helpful in your day-to-day life?
1:58 Yeah, I think that the approach that um the therapists that shrinking is
2:02 based on have is that people actually want to be told what to do.
2:05 And so unlike some other therapies, they're like,
2:09 "Listen, we will get to the bottom of this.
2:11 Like, we'll get to the why over months and months,
2:14 but people want to know what to do on Tuesday." You know what I mean?
2:17 Like when they have to have the conversation.
2:19 And these therapists will just tell you what to say.
2:22 So, it's a little bit controversial, but I think it's actually wish fulfillment.
2:25 I think that's what you want.
2:26 Like, what do I say to my boss on Tuesday?
2:34 Great.
2:36 I'm trying to uh take legit bites.
2:40 The people will love that.
2:41 Yeah, I think so.
2:42 Forever a showman, Jason.
2:45 Well, that one's nice.
2:49 That's really nice.
2:51 So, when Paul Rudd was on the show, he talked about how the movies that he
2:54 finds funniest are often categorized as dramas,
2:57 while some of the most dramatic moments in film have happened in comedies.
3:02 Yeah.
3:02 Does that at all ring true to you?
3:03 And what immediately comes to mind when
3:05 you think about the phrase dramatic comedy?
3:07 I've always felt like that was the most honest version of any of these subjects.
3:12 Heavy on heavy isn't really how it goes in real life.
3:14 And also, I think as a viewer, you kind of get turned off like, okay, I get it.
3:17 Like I I I understand cancer is hard, you know,
3:20 but like what is it like to get through it?
3:22 Like Sarah Marshall, that guy's having a really hard time, you know,
3:26 he's like crying and everything and just really devastated about,
3:31 you know, a breakup.
3:33 Uh I think it's fun to see somebody feeling things a little too much on screen.
3:38 Um and it it like lowers the defenses so
3:41 then you can sucker punch with some real dramatic stuff.
3:49 So, up next is a white hot mustard sauce.
3:51 You said it, dog.
3:58 I mean, I know it's coming.
4:02 Mhm.
4:02 I'm a fool.
4:04 But I I feel like we're I feel like we're
4:06 in kind of a we're living in a safe space right now.
4:10 Yeah.
4:11 You know, uh, the difference between sauce one, sauce two,
4:14 sauce three, we're on the margins, you know, incremental.
4:17 That's right.
4:17 It it will not remain that way.
4:19 I'm a chicken wing talk show host
4:21 of the highest dignity and I try to be transparent.
4:23 Yeah.
4:23 Yeah.
4:23 I know.
4:24 I appreciate that.
4:25 I know everyone.
4:26 It does.
4:27 I try.
4:29 Yeah.
4:29 What was it like working as an usher
4:31 at the Santa Monica Playhouse as an 11-year-old?
4:33 Like, did that experience do anything to shape
4:35 your aspirations of one day becoming an actor?
4:38 I was a weird kid.
4:40 And so they sent me to the Santa Monica Playhouse,
4:43 which at that age, it's not really for kids who like love acting.
4:48 It's for kids who don't have friends, you know?
4:50 So, you're in this room of like equally awkward people.
4:54 But what I found there was that when I was acting,
4:58 I felt very comfortable and I felt
5:00 like I understood the assignment in that space.
5:02 I was like, "Oh, I know how to do
5:04 this." That was my my first kind of flirting with um
5:10 this might be something that I am like uniquely good
5:13 at and I didn't have other things like that at the time.
5:21 So far so great.
5:28 Some smokiness action on this one.
5:31 Yeah.
5:31 Little sweetness from the peach.
5:32 It's terrific.
5:33 kind of a little afterburn, you know, to let you know where you are.
5:36 Yeah, that's right.
5:37 That says, "Hey, we're getting there." A sign of what's to come.
5:42 Yeah.
5:42 Yeah.
5:42 Great.
5:43 Was there any advice that Jud Appatile gave you
5:45 as a teenager that maybe at the time you didn't really understand,
5:48 but you look back now and think of as profound?
5:52 Two moments I remember as being kind of like anchor moments.
5:56 One was I had to play a song on Freaks and Geeks on the guitar.
6:00 I had to write it and sing it.
6:02 The script came in on like a Monday and I had to do it on a Friday.
6:07 I got the script and I said, "Jud,
6:08 I don't know how to play guitar." And without missing a beat,
6:11 he said, "You'll figure it out.
6:13 You're living your dream.
6:14 You figure it out." And ever since then, I really do think you'll figure it out.
6:19 The other thing he said, which is the best advice I ever got,
6:21 and I've talked about it before, but he took me aside and he said, "Uh, Jace,
6:26 if you can improv the way you're improving here, you can write.
6:29 You just need to learn how to do it.
6:31 You're a really weird dude and the only way the only way
6:34 you're going to make it is if you write your own material.
6:37 I think I'm honestly I'm still around because of that.
6:40 All right.
6:40 Would you believe me if I told you we are at the halfway mark?
6:44 Totally.
6:45 Story checks out.
6:46 I can tell.
6:47 So this next one is called uh tropical amaro here in the five spot.
7:00 A fool who was too eager would start chowing
7:03 them down and then be met with the consequences.
7:06 Is it true that your mother sent out a mass email warning family members about
7:13 your nude scene and forgetting Sarah Marshall which included the line,
7:16 "It is not gratuitous and is essential to the plot." Yeah.
7:20 And so I thought it would be a really
7:22 really great like one of the great practical jokes not
7:25 to tell my parents that I did Full Frontal Nudity
7:28 and Forgetting Sarah Marshall and then take them to the premiere.
7:31 This was like a really thrilling idea for me.
7:34 And so we go to the premiere and I have my dad on one side,
7:38 my mom on the other cuz I always sit in between them
7:41 and like within it's like 5 minutes into the movie my dick comes out,
7:46 you know, and I'm like, "Oh, here it comes.
7:48 You don't have to wait long."
7:49 Yeah.
7:49 Yeah.
7:50 And I turned to my mom expecting her to be laughing hysterically.
7:53 And her face is beat red and there's a tear coming down her face and I said,
8:00 "Are you okay?" And she said, "Why didn't you tell me?" And I said,
8:04 "I thought it would be a funny joke." She said,
8:07 "It's not a funny joke." And she got up and left the theater.
8:11 And then she came back in and she like put herself together.
8:14 And then that night she sent out an email to the entire family that said, "Uh,
8:18 I would like to inform you that Jason has
8:20 chosen to do full frontal nudity in his newest film.
8:24 However, I'd like to assure you that it
8:25 is not gratuitous and essential to the plot." Factor fiction.
8:31 After a test screening of The Muppets,
8:33 you received a feedback card written by a seven-year-old who said the one
8:37 thing that he didn't like about the movie was your character's face.
8:40 That's right.
8:41 That is fact.
8:42 What do you learn from?
8:43 I have it.
8:43 I have it framed.
8:45 It's like, what did you like?
8:46 Muppets are cute.
8:48 What's your favorite part?
8:49 Muppets sing.
8:50 What did you not like?
8:52 Gary's face.
8:54 Isn't that awesome?
8:56 Now, I've watched a bunch as compared to other eaters, guests.
9:01 How am I doing in relation to the wings?
9:03 Like,
9:04 steady hand.
9:06 Steady.
9:05 But up next is one that rather rudely
9:07 announces itself as homegrown hell in the six spot.
9:11 The sauce leopard.
9:15 Mhm.
9:17 SEAN, I think trying to have any strategy of trying
9:31 to swallow it fast or anything like that, it's useless.
9:33 It's like a boxing match.
9:34 You can walk in with strategy,
9:36 but once the punches start flying, all there is is survival.
9:42 story checks out.
9:44 That's right, man.
9:46 If you were to put together a Peter Sers
9:49 double feature to show off his risk-taking as an actor,
9:53 which two films would you screen?
9:55 I mean, I think if you do, look, Being There is for sure in there.
10:00 Being there broke my brain open.
10:02 I was like, "Oh, you're allowed to do anything.
10:04 Don't let anybody tell you you're just this or just that." And also,
10:08 that movie is a drama.
10:10 I guess there's also incredibly funny moments and incredibly funny line readings
10:14 and I'm like you do not have to be limited by anything.
10:18 Um I think you either put like for the juxiposition
10:22 maybe Pink Panther talk about dancing out there.
10:26 There's like a little bit of bravery that is required to take it for a spin.
10:31 My nose is running a little bit but that's normal I assume.
10:34 Mine too.
10:35 You know through this whole thing same wavelength.
10:38 Amazing man.
10:38 Up next is a sauce called Nirvana.
10:50 Funky's hot sauce.
10:51 Then the possessive like Funky's the guy.
10:55 I'm not trying to be tough.
10:58 Mhm.
10:58 But we're okay.
11:00 Respect cuz I'm a little smoky in the chest
11:02 right now if I'm being totally honest.
11:04 Cuz you confessed to me it's a new year.
11:05 This is your first run at this gauntlet.
11:07 I've been on vacation, you know, a lot of practice and and I can feel it.
11:11 You know, I got to work my way back into game shape over here.
11:13 That's all right.
11:14 You're doing great.
11:16 Thanks, Jason.
11:18 Yeah.
11:18 I understand that you would eat three Hot Pockets every 3 hours.
11:24 Yeah.
11:23 To prepare for your role in the end of the tour.
11:26 What is pound-for-pound the greatest hot pocket flavor in your opinion?
11:29 Uh, the original pepperoni pizza.
11:31 It's what I grew up on, but this was not a healthy thing I did.
11:34 I had to gain like 50 pounds for it because
11:36 I had gotten too skinny for something else right before.
11:39 I feel it now.
11:42 Yeah, I had gotten a little too skinny uh before.
11:44 So, I had like a month to gain 50 lbs.
11:47 So, I ate three Hot Pockets every 3 hours and it was super fun.
11:50 It was a great time in my life, but I wouldn't do it again.
11:53 What makes the BLT the all-time greatest sandwich?
11:55 Cuz you can eat it any time of day.
11:58 That's versatile.
12:00 It is an absolutely perfect sandwich.
12:03 From How I Met Your Mother's Best Burger in New York
12:06 to the raw potato and shrinking to playing a chef in the five-year engagement,
12:12 do you have an all-time favorite Jason Seagull food scene from your career?
12:16 Ooh.
12:16 A scene involving food.
12:21 Yes.
12:21 There is a a scene in I Love You,
12:23 Man where we go around the table and all give toasts.
12:28 There were a bunch of comic geniuses
12:30 at that table and everybody was just slaughtering that zinging.
12:35 Everybody was zinging.
12:36 I often um make sure that I am enjoying the company that I'm in.
12:42 You know what I mean?
12:43 Like, holy moly, this person is amazing.
12:46 And where better to do it than over a meal?
12:48 I feel that way right now.
12:56 Yeah, this is the one.
13:00 Starting to sweat a little bit, but I'm keeping my cool
13:06 always.
13:08 Yeah.
13:10 Might take a second to get No, you're not like that, are you?
13:13 A little bit.
13:13 It's catching you
13:14 every time.
13:15 Every time this sauce, I'll join you.
13:20 Double bite into the bomb.
13:21 Listen, man.
13:22 Oh, so you you go one for one with whoever's here.
13:25 I always Yeah, you have the wheel right now.
13:28 I'm a passenger.
13:29 Okay, good to know.
13:36 Yeah.
13:36 So, yeah, I should ask you some[ __] Yeah, maybe.
13:43 Yeah.
13:43 Take some pressure off over here.
13:46 So before writing and starring in the Muppet movie,
13:49 I know that you were a longtime fan, even crediting Kermit the Frog as one
13:53 of your most important and significant acting influences.
13:58 Absolutely.
13:57 Who do you think is the most underrated deep cut muppet character?
14:01 Like, does Laling get the credit he deserves?
14:05 Look, I'm a big I'm a big Janice fan.
14:12 I think Piggy gets a lot of credit on the lady puppet front,
14:15 but Janice is pretty exceptional as well.
14:18 I also have the Jason Seagull muppet from the Muppets,
14:22 which is pretty cool because they also gave
14:23 me a thing to control it by remote control.
14:28 So, back in the day, I would tell people, "Hey, like come on over to the house.
14:32 I'll leave the front door open.
14:33 I'll be there." And the puppet would be sitting on the couch
14:38 and they'd come in and they'd look around and I could see them.
14:40 And then all of a sudden the puppet would be like,
14:42 "Hello." You know, I've been waiting for you.
14:48 When you're working on a movie with blue chip IP, like the Muppets,
14:52 do you ever have to lose a scene
14:53 or a plot point because it's nixed by the lawyers?
14:56 Like, do you have a scene that you most
14:57 regret losing to the red lines of a contract?
15:00 I I do, but it wasn't to a contract.
15:02 It was to an ethos.
15:04 You know, you have this bad guy,
15:06 Tex Richmond, who's going to destroy their studio.
15:08 And so, the Muppets all have to get back together to defeat this common enemy.
15:12 I had a scene at the end of the movie where all of a sudden Tex Richmond
15:16 unzips himself and it's Kermit and Kermit had orchestrated
15:21 this whole plot to get his friends back together.
15:23 He missed his friends and it actually was
15:25 like really cool and I think very beautiful.
15:28 But then they said, "Listen, we can't do this." I said,
15:30 "Why?" They said, "Cuz Kermit never lies." Kermit never tells a lie.
15:35 It's a rule that's never broken.
15:37 And so, uh, you know, what can you say to that?
15:44 I feel like there's water coming out of holes in my face.
15:47 Yeah, that's what happens.
15:48 We're We're squeezed like a sponge.
15:50 Sure.
15:50 A little bit.
15:51 But all that said, there's no place I'd rather be.
15:57 Jason, let's see if you still feel that way after sauce number nine.
16:02 Up next, a smoked Serrano, the Squash Reaper.
16:05 Reaper X.
16:07 That's like a terrible basketball nickname.
16:10 What a poetic segment, by the way.
16:12 Big three by the Squash Reaper.
16:21 Oh, you get kind of like so blasted by the bone,
16:28 right?
16:28 That it kind of clears it all the same, right?
16:33 There's a cumulative effect that we've had of these wings.
16:36 Total scorched earth.
16:37 Just a flamethrower with the bomb.
16:40 But it does kind of make everything a little bit easier afterwards,
16:45 I find at least.
16:45 Yeah.
16:46 What you got for me?
16:47 Well, you know, on the topic of basketball nicknames,
16:50 I know that you went by Dr.
16:51 Dunk.
16:51 I did
16:52 while at Harvard.
16:53 Well, I didn't go by Dr.
16:54 Dunk.
16:54 Like, I didn't like say, "Hello.
16:57 Hello.
16:57 My name's Dr.
16:59 Dunk." As Dr.
17:00 Dunk, you won the East Coast Slam Dunk Contest in 1997.
17:05 Do you remember the marquee dunk that helped you win?
17:09 Yes.
17:09 I pulled a jersey over my head and I
17:11 had one of my teammates spin me around three times.
17:14 You could obviously see through the jersey,
17:16 but I was like acted really discombobulated like what?
17:22 Oh no.
17:24 And then dunked
17:25 in the place as though I managed to figure out where the hoop was, you know.
17:28 But uh yeah, and then the the next day it said like uh Dr.
17:33 Dunk is born or something in the LA Times.
17:36 People call me Dr.
17:37 Dunk for a couple years.
17:39 They're really weird.
17:44 But this is not a skill that I'm good at at life either.
17:47 Opening these things.
17:50 Let's get it.
17:51 How much are you putting on?
17:52 Like we're doing it.
17:54 That's Yeah, that's textbook right there.
18:00 Is this the worst one by the way?
18:03 We'll see.
18:04 As you'll find, it'll build over here over like the next 15 to 30 seconds.
18:11 Okay, sir.
18:12 Let's finish it up.
18:13 Let's do it.
18:19 We did great.
18:21 And with that, we've reached the summit of Spice Mountain.
18:25 And you know, if there's a through line in this interview,
18:28 it's that as your Hollywood career continues, you're always evolving.
18:32 you know, from theatrical comedies to intimate indies to prestige
18:37 television to multicam sitcoms and even a Muppets movie.
18:43 Yeah.
18:42 To close things out, I'm curious.
18:44 Which of those projects or environments made you most nervous as an actor?
18:48 And which one felt most immediately like home?
18:51 Oh, what a great question.
18:54 You know where I felt really at home?
18:55 Forgetting Sarah Marshall.
18:56 Forgetting Sarah Marshall.
18:57 I really had the naivity of youth.
19:00 And that's the best.
19:01 It really is.
19:02 I was like a kid when I wrote it.
19:03 I was like 24, 25 when I wrote it.
19:05 So people often ask like,
19:06 "What would you go back and tell
19:08 your younger self?" I actually play the opposite game.
19:10 And I try to remember like younger Jason who wasn't afraid of anything.
19:15 Like remind me to be that dude.
19:17 Like let your freak flag fly.
19:19 Felt very at home there.
19:21 Uh I was actually was nervous coming here.
19:24 I don't know if this counts as me as a It counts.
19:26 Yeah.
19:26 Yeah.
19:28 This is probably the most nervous I've been in a while
19:30 because I didn't know what my body was going to do.
19:32 But it turns out I'm great at this.
19:37 Let your freak flag fly.
19:40 And look at you, Jason Seagull,
19:41 taking on the wings of death, living to tell the tale.
19:44 Now there's nothing left to do but roll out the red carpet for you.
19:46 This camera, this camera, or this camera.
19:48 Let the people know what you have going on in your life.
19:51 Cool.
19:52 My name is Jason Seagull and I've just completed The Hot Ones
19:55 Gauntlet and uh my TV show Shrinking uh premieres uh now nowish
20:01 on Apple TV with a bunch of amazing actors and uh I'm
20:05 getting married this year which is the most important thing I've ever done.
20:08 Okay, THANKS.
20:14 We did it.
20:18 That was great.
20:20 I had a great time here.
20:23 Thanks so much.
20:24 You did great.
20:25 Thank you.
20:26 Bodied that.
20:27 So did you.
20:29 I was just trying to keep pace to be honest with you.
20:31 I mean it's it's hot for sure.
20:35 Yeah.
20:40 My mouth right on fire.
20:43 Wants to leave my body.
20:45 Wants to leave my body.
20:49 Hey, what's going on everybody from First We Feast.
20:51 I'm Sean Evans and you're watching Hot Ones.
20:53 It's the show with hot questions and even hotter wings.
20:55 And today we're joined by Will Arnett.
20:57 He's an actor you know from breakout comedies like Arrested Development,
20:59 Bojack Horseman, The Lego Batman Movie, and many more.
21:02 He's also, of course,
21:03 one-third of the Golden Globe Award nominated podcast Smartless.
21:06 And you can catch him starring opposite Laura Durn
21:08 in the Bradley Cooper directed comedy drama, Is This Thing On?
21:11 Will Arnette, welcome to the show.
21:13 Thank you, Sean.
21:14 It's a pleasure to be here.
21:16 And fun fact,
21:18 yeah, we have the same publicist.
21:19 Before we get started, I wonder how did he pitch hot ones to you?
21:23 I I'm so, you know, nervous about eating hot food.
21:27 I can't even watch people eat hot food, spicy food, you know.
21:30 Um anyway, he said, "You have to do it." And I said, "Uh,
21:34 I I like the idea, but I feel like I'm going to embarrass myself.
21:37 I don't want people to, you know,
21:38 I'm going to have to wear a depens um during the taping." Um and he said,
21:43 "You're going to be great." And Sean's a great guy.
21:45 That's really how he pitched it.
21:46 He said, "You're a great guy."
21:48 Thanks, Louis.
21:49 Appreciate that one.
21:50 All right,
21:50 Louis K from Covert Creative,
21:53 and I'm just doing his favorite thing, which is mentioning him more.
22:20 I can already smell it.
22:22 Wow.
22:30 I'm already like, man, that's really
22:37 This is going to be terrible for me.
22:40 This is a performance unlike any other role that we've seen you in.
22:43 You know, it's a true dramatic pivot.
22:44 Did you have any fears, any anxiety,
22:46 any reservations about portraying a character and then not having
22:50 that protective layer of irony or physical comedy to fall back on?
22:53 Yeah, for sure.
22:54 It was new to to do something where there's not
22:56 at the end of it kind of letting the air out of it.
22:59 Um, and having to really commit to the vulnerability
23:03 to whatever the moment was, uh, was new.
23:07 It was nerve-wracking.
23:08 everyone I was working with, Bradley, multiple Academy Award nominee,
23:12 Lord Durn, Academy Award winner, and uh me.
23:16 I'm there with all these, you know,
23:18 really formidable performers and and having to really sort of commit to this
23:23 and more than holding your own, if you ask me.
23:25 Well, that's nice of you to say.
23:26 Who knows?
23:26 But, you know, it was it was it was scary.
23:29 I see.
23:29 Are you reaching for number two?
23:31 Look at that.
23:32 You're in I thought I could distract you.
23:34 No, no, I'm too traveled.
23:36 I'm too busy.
23:37 We're out of time.
23:37 Listen.
23:40 All right.
23:40 So, up next, a pickled garlic Sriracha sauce.
23:45 Okay.
23:52 Honest question.
23:54 Sure.
23:54 Did you like when you go and you have
23:55 like a plate of spaghetti now and you're like, h
23:58 Yeah.
23:58 Like it's not giving me enough.
24:00 It's not giving you enough.
24:00 Yeah.
24:00 I think maybe to some degree the sensitivity, you know, like I I need it.
24:05 I think I do need it a little bit more.
24:06 That shit's calling you, man.
24:08 It's call.
24:08 I'm feeding.
24:09 I'm scratching.
24:09 I'm itching.
24:10 Wow.
24:11 Interesting.
24:11 That's how that goes.
24:12 I read a quote from Chris Mccay where he talked about how you did
24:15 hundreds of takes before finally landing
24:17 on the right tone for the Batman character.
24:20 Yeah.
24:20 How or when did you know that you'd crack the code on it?
24:22 And can you give us an example of a Batman voice that wouldn't work?
24:26 We just kind of kept going back to that those moments
24:29 in the Batman films and especially Christian Bale, whom I love.
24:31 I think he's a great Batman, but that really kind of gritty serious voice.
24:39 And And then we I just started doing like
24:42 the idea of him going like, "How many wings?
24:46 What is it like 10 wings?
24:48 Why this one?
24:49 Is this one smaller?
24:50 I'd love to get some more ice if I Okay, hang on one second.
24:53 I got to wipe my hands." Like just
24:54 that at every turn all he's doing is talking in Batman.
24:59 It was just kind of to make those guys laugh,
25:01 like just saying the most mundane[ __] And that's kind of where we landed.
25:05 Number three, if you're ready.
25:08 Yeah, let's do it, man.
25:09 So, this is a white hot mustard sauce here in the three spot.
25:15 Sick.
25:16 You like it on the name?
25:17 I do.
25:17 I do.
25:18 White hot mustard.
25:27 Well, the mustard is nice.
25:28 It's a little bit of a heat cutter.
25:31 That was just for shits and giggles.
25:32 I didn't even need a That was just for dramatic effect.
25:36 It was.
25:36 And I like I like I don't drink a lot of milk anymore.
25:39 But here's a good excuse.
25:40 You want to get back in the game?
25:41 A great excuse.
25:43 Can you talk me through the mechanics?
25:44 I'd love to, but I'm super busy doing Hot Ones.
25:49 So, yes.
25:51 of playing a bad magician like Job and Arrested Development.
25:54 like step by step, how does a professional magician
25:57 come in and teach you how to do magic poorly?
26:00 Well, what was funny was that you mentioned that is we did had a very have
26:04 at various stages um magicians come in and teach
26:09 me sort of stuff like how to, you know,
26:10 create fire in your hand.
26:11 And I guess the scene was at a certain
26:14 time a dove didn't come out and then we wanted
26:16 to have this moment where I'm lifting my hands
26:18 and all of a sudden the dove does come out.
26:21 But I remember we had this guy come in and so he's teaching me all this stuff.
26:24 And I actually had to say to him like, "It's okay, man.
26:27 I don't need to be good." Yeah.
26:30 It was so fun playing a guy who was super confident
26:33 that he despite all the evidence that he was not good.
26:38 Uh and that he yet ignored that and continued with this.
26:42 I
26:43 I wish I had more of that.
26:44 I know.
26:45 Just like really unwarranted confidence.
26:48 Uh, I think I've had a lot of that in my life.
26:51 Well, I think it'll serve you today.
26:52 You know what I mean?
26:53 Bite first, ask questions later, you know.
26:55 Yeah, copy that.
26:56 Hey, let's get into another one.
26:58 All right, so up next,
27:02 we have a smoked habanero and peach sauce in the four spot.
27:06 I smoked a habanero once.
27:07 Uh, it was late night and uh it was just my mind was restless.
27:12 Who's feeding and who's itching now?
27:14 Yeah.
27:14 Let's see.
27:15 Here we go.
27:25 That is another level.
27:28 Here's what I want to know.
27:29 Obby, yeah.
27:32 How far did Baitman get?
27:33 All the way to the end.
27:34 All right.
27:34 And that's going to put
27:36 Are you kidding?
27:37 I'm not trying to put pressure on you, but he made it all the way to the end.
27:40 Did he complain?
27:42 Quite a bit, actually.
27:43 Yeah.
27:44 Throughout.
27:44 Yeah.
27:45 He's so soft as you suspect.
27:47 He is so soft.
27:52 Do you have a most painful memory of auditioning in LA during pilot season?
27:55 I understand that in the late '9s,
27:57 early 2000s that you swore off pilots after being
28:00 cast in a series of shows that failed to launch.
28:03 I I did have once, not for pilot season,
28:05 I had one time I read for Kevin Cronin did
28:08 that movie called I think I think it was called The Postman.
28:11 Anybody remember that movie?
28:12 the night before I'd eaten something bad and I ended up
28:15 going to the hospital cuz I was so dehydrated from being ill.
28:20 And at that point, that afternoon going to meet him was the that was
28:23 the furthest I'd been away from the bathroom in like, you know, 14 hours.
28:27 And I remember getting up there and just and meeting him and being a fan
28:30 of his and like this it was like a big and and just sweating,
28:35 cold sweat and just thinking like this can go really bad right now.
28:41 Like I didn't, you know, it's like, yeah, I was meeting Kevin Coer and and and I
28:45 legitimately was worried about crapping my pants, you know.
28:57 And this is your brand, Tropical Emoro by Hot Ones.
29:02 Get it wherever you get your hot sauce.
29:06 That's just a free
29:07 That was That was I know that's not cheap.
29:10 I know that that's not cheap.
29:11 Well, it wasn't for me.
29:12 If you use it, I'm I'm assuming you.
29:18 And then here you have kind of like a island vibe almost.
29:22 There's like some tropical notes up front behind it.
29:24 Some heat.
29:25 Yeah.
29:27 Yeah.
29:27 There is a little bit of heat on the on this island.
29:30 There is.
29:30 Yeah.
29:32 Yeah.
29:31 It's sweaty in the tropics today.
29:33 M
29:34 as a proud Torononian.
29:37 Yeah.
29:36 Where does being inducted into Canada's Walk of Fame
29:39 in 2019 fall in your list of career accomplishments?
29:42 Well, let me just say it's so great fielding field questions.
29:49 There's a lot there's a lot happening.
29:51 There's so much happening.
29:53 Well, Sean, try to ignore what's happening here.
29:56 Stay focused on this.
29:58 I'm really proud of being Canadian.
30:00 And so for them to have me come back there and honor me.
30:03 And also part of me as a Canadian, I'm kind of embarrassed, right, by
30:07 you always feel like even the people giving it
30:09 to you are going to be like, "Here you go.
30:11 Here's your award.
30:12 You're not a big shot." You know, you're like,
30:14 "You're giving it to me." But they were so sweet
30:16 and and kind about it and and uh yeah, it was cool.
30:20 It was like coming coming home after all these years
30:22 and and having that was uh was a really neat experience.
30:26 For the uninitiated,
30:27 what do you see as the allore of the Big Harve burger from Harvey's?
30:31 Oh man, now you're speaking my language.
30:34 The Big Harve is the Cadillac.
30:38 That's what I'm talking about.
30:39 Yeah, the Cadillac of cheeseburgers.
30:41 It's just like a big double.
30:42 You can get it with bacon.
30:44 There's something about the way that they grill up their burgers at Harvey's.
30:48 The way they do their like sliced pickles on a burger.
30:50 Come on.
30:51 How would you quantify the uh significance
30:53 of the Teragon Theater in your development as an actor?
30:56 Pretty huge.
30:57 Look at you guys.
30:59 Who does all the research around you guys?
31:03 When I started there, I was, I guess, 16.
31:05 And I was the youngest by a mile.
31:07 Everybody else were in their 20s or even 30s and and doing these acting classes.
31:12 And it was it was a good sort of trial
31:14 by fire of getting in there and seeing what it was like.
31:16 Yeah.
31:17 just working on scenes and and sort of acting outside of doing school plays.
31:21 What was your first big break?
31:22 Was it a Man Witch commercial in 1987?
31:25 That was pretty big.
31:26 That was my first professional gig.
31:28 You got to remember those.
31:29 Those are special.
31:30 The first time you get paid to do the thing, you know.
31:32 Yeah, of course.
31:33 I I cherish it.
31:34 It's why I had Louis scrub it from the internet.
31:43 Oh, this one seems fine.
31:44 Homegrown hell.
31:46 But you guys don't come up but you
31:47 didn't come up with the name homegrown health.
31:48 No, this isn't ours.
31:49 This isn't ours.
31:50 This is some other psycho.
31:55 I mean, God bless him.
31:58 Yeah.
31:57 I hope he does well.
31:59 You know,
32:00 we wish him all the best.
32:01 Of course we do.
32:03 Mhm.
32:02 I can feel a little my I can feel my body temp my core heating up a little bit
32:07 and cores get hot.
32:08 Yeah.
32:08 And then and I don't want my core to overheat.
32:10 You know, this is none of us do.
32:12 This thing is a finally spontaneously studio.
32:16 I know.
32:16 I know.
32:17 This chassis is no fluke.
32:19 This is built the American way,
32:22 but Canadian obviously.
32:25 So, Conan O'Brien named you alongside Nor McDonald, right?
32:28 Oh, okay.
32:29 This is a compliment.
32:29 Okay.
32:30 It is.
32:31 Is two of his He's kind of my nemesis.
32:33 I understand.
32:34 I get it.
32:34 But two of his all-time favorite talk show guests saying
32:37 that you have an instinct for chaos that makes live TV exciting.
32:41 What's your philosophy on the makings of a great late night segment?
32:44 And how much of it is instinct versus preparation?
32:49 How much is lip replacement uh surgery?
32:53 Is that a is that even a thing?
32:56 It's got to be.
32:58 Oh my god.
32:59 God, my plastic surgeon is so busy with me
33:02 right now cuz I've got all this upcoming work.
33:04 Wait till you see me next year.
33:07 Even better than I can't even imagine.
33:10 Insane.
33:12 It's going.
33:13 It I have so many fun things.
33:15 The mockups look good.
33:16 Oh, they look really good once it settles.
33:22 Are you kidding?
33:25 I understand that we're there to have fun and you
33:28 can tell the difference when it's scripted and when they're
33:30 coming up with in the moment because it also feels
33:33 like the grown-ups uh lent us their cameras and like, hey, we can[ __] around.
33:43 Obviously, we're going to eat it.
33:44 Look, Sean, let's take a minute.
33:49 Yeah.
33:49 Let's just think about all the things that are
33:50 important to us in this life, you know?
33:54 our health.
33:56 Uh, mild food most importantly.
34:00 Yeah.
34:00 All right, I'm going to take a deep breath.
34:03 See you on the other side.
34:04 See you on the other side.
34:09 This is where the air gets a little bit thin for me at this point in the show.
34:13 I'm starting to catch Yeah, I'm starting to catch some tunnel vision.
34:17 eyes are watering up
34:20 in almost kind of a
34:21 How long does it usually last?
34:25 So, here's the deal.
34:26 It's going to get It's going to get worse from here.
34:29 But once you walk Thanks for the good news.
34:30 Yeah.
34:31 Yeah.
34:31 But once you walk out of the studio, okay,
34:34 in like 15 20 minutes, it'll all dissipate and just be a memory.
34:38 You know, you'll be like, "Oh, that wasn't so bad.
34:39 I could almost do it again." But you're not going
34:42 to be feeling that or thinking that when you're actually doing it.
34:45 You know, we're just on a wave that we're surfing right now,
34:49 right?
34:49 Again, with the lips.
34:51 Yeah, I know.
34:51 I know.
34:52 Cuz it's dry out, so I feel like my lips were kind of chapped.
34:55 Mhm.
34:55 So, it's really gotten in there.
34:57 Salt in the wound a little bit.
34:58 Yeah.
34:58 I remember they used to talk about how the butter was going
35:00 to get in all the nooks and crannies on the Thomas' English muffin.
35:04 Yeah.
35:04 The hot sauce.
35:04 The hot sauce is doing kind of that same effect on my lips.
35:10 What's your case for Wendell Clark as the all-time greatest Toronto Maple Leaf?
35:14 pretty solid.
35:15 He's the ultimate hockey player.
35:16 He's the the most incredible power forward.
35:19 He could score, he could fight, he could do it all.
35:22 I spent some time with him re recently and um Did you know he's running?
35:29 Yeah.
35:29 Yeah.
35:29 Yeah.
35:29 A little bit.
35:30 Right.
35:30 Um I'm juicy over here.
35:32 That's fun.
35:33 We're having a blast.
35:35 Um everybody's going to be like, "Hey,
35:37 did you see that guy who's sniffling all the time on that show?"
35:40 But it's all right because every show somebody's sniffling.
35:42 You know what I mean?
35:43 No matter what you're going through.
35:47 Uh-huh.
35:46 I'm going through something.
35:49 And don't apologize for it.
35:51 I'm not.
35:54 You should apologize.
36:02 This stuff is so hot.
36:03 I feel like I'm I'm happy that I've already had kids.
36:07 I feel like this would impact my semen count.
36:12 I guess I have that to look forward to.
36:16 Let me guess.
36:17 This one is like a bucker buster.
36:18 It goes in deep and takes a second and then it just explodes on you.
36:21 Is that the deal?
36:25 So, we bit into that one at the same time.
36:27 You'll really start to feel this, I think, almost immediately.
36:30 Like right now.
36:34 Yeah.
36:32 It should be hitting.
36:34 Any final words you want to say to Lewis before he's fired?
36:42 You still got me, Lewis.
36:43 At least.
36:46 What's your Mount Rushmore of TV sitcoms?
36:48 Like, off the top of your head,
36:49 without thinking about it too much, your top four and why?
36:51 Oh my god.
36:54 Is my face bleeding?
36:55 No, you look great.
36:57 Bleeding me.
36:58 Holy[ __] I'm a Cheers guy.
37:03 Classic for exactly that reason.
37:04 It is classic on the family's amazing.
37:07 The office Golden Girls.
37:10 Holy[ __] It's unreal how funny uh Golden Girls is.
37:14 Some of their jokes are just incredible.
37:16 I'm I know I'm missing some.
37:19 But it it's it's okay because you're in the fog of war over here.
37:22 You know, this spice is coming at you from all sides.
37:27 My mouth
37:28 right on fire wants to leave my body.
37:31 Yeah.
37:37 Holy[ __] Would you like some ice cream?
37:41 Yeah.
37:41 Check this out.
37:42 How quick are we on the draw?
37:43 Oh, that's so good.
37:44 Thank you so much.
37:45 You knew that.
37:46 Thank you.
37:48 That first bite.
37:49 Is that like the best ice cream ever, right?
37:57 Oh, man.
37:57 Joe, how does that feel?
37:59 Good, right?
38:01 Hell yeah.
38:02 Uh, are you ready to dive into the next one or you want to I mean, I don't know.
38:08 Is it going to have the same effect?
38:11 No, it won't be like that last one.
38:14 Okay.
38:20 Now, not fun.
38:22 Not a walk in the park.
38:23 Not a walk in the park.
38:24 But after the last one.
38:26 Yeah.
38:27 I don't want to touch any of like my nose with my one that I had in my mouth,
38:31 which is smart.
38:32 That's why I I' I've actually noticed you've been cycling through the napkins.
38:36 Way to keep your head on.
38:37 You know, sometimes people get lost in this whole thing.
38:40 They use the finger napkin on the face, but right, you're locked in
38:44 when you're in country.
38:46 You know, people ask me all the time, they're like,
38:49 "You're military, right?" And I'm a I'm not really allowed to say
38:56 I can see the way that you react out
38:57 in the field though that you're a trained that you're trained.
39:01 I keep my head on a swivel at all times even on the front lines
39:05 because you never know, you know,
39:06 you're not you never know where is what's going to be the point of engagement.
39:09 Sorry.
39:09 Yeah.
39:11 Again, I'm just an actor and don't do I'm not into covert activities, okay?
39:18 I'm not getting dropped into hot zones.
39:21 Definitely not.
39:22 Yeah.
39:26 As a lifelong enthusiast of the arcade staple,
39:29 what's your case for Golden Tea Golf is the best bar game of all time.
39:36 Sean, what the[ __] man?
39:39 It's so out of love.
39:41 As if it's normal to ask me a question about Golden Tea.
39:46 I used to be so good at Golden D.
39:48 Have you ever played it before?
39:49 Yeah.
39:49 Yeah, of course.
39:50 They used to have it at this bar I used to frequent
39:53 back in the day in the '9s here in New York.
39:56 Was that the Peter McManus bar on 7th Avenue?
39:59 Yes.
40:00 Nice.
40:00 We just called We just called McManis.
40:03 I'm not on the end, you know.
40:05 Yeah.
40:05 Wasn't playing.
40:05 I knew everybody there.
40:06 Great group of people.
40:08 We're going there and there were two machines,
40:09 one in the front, one in the back.
40:10 We owned all the high scores for it.
40:14 is so insane when I think about how much time I spent doing that.
40:17 Let's let's finish this off.
40:18 Well, we're setting a new high score today.
40:20 All right.
40:21 Well,
40:22 no, we're not.
40:29 What are you You're just putting it on, then you're going to roll it in there.
40:31 Yeah, exactly.
40:32 Sick[ __]
40:35 Sean,
40:37 well,
40:36 you you honestly you you bring a great game.
40:39 I love it.
40:40 You want to talk about keeping your cool?
40:41 You're sitting there asking me a bunch of questions.
40:44 And you don't seem like you're suffering at all.
40:46 And I I got to say, I'm just trying to be a steady hand for you.
40:51 Sure.
40:51 All right.
40:51 Well, I love that you're a team player.
40:53 I'm a team player.
40:54 I like that about this together.
40:55 All right.
40:56 It's a dance we share.
40:57 All right.
40:57 Let's get this[ __] over with.
40:59 Let's get this[ __] over with.
41:05 I felt a bunch on my lips and I'm not excited.
41:10 But the good news is the wings of death are behind us.
41:15 All right?
41:15 You have conquered the hot ones gauntlet.
41:18 And to close things out, you know,
41:20 you're one of the defining voice actors of our time.
41:23 And I want to channel that rich vocalization to close out the show here.
41:27 All right.
41:28 I'm going to point to a sauce and I want you
41:30 to articulate the feeling of eating that sauce using effort noises.
41:34 Okay.
41:37 Garlic delight.
41:40 How about tropical amaro?
41:43 What about the bomb beyond insanity?
41:47 And what you just ate, Thermageddon.
41:53 I feel it.
41:54 I'm in the scene.
41:55 And look at you, Will Arnette,
41:57 taking on the wings of death, living to tell the tale.
41:59 Now there's nothing left to do but roll out the red carpet for you.
42:02 This camera, this camera, or this camera?
42:03 Let the people know what you have going on in your life.
42:06 Well, I got to Can I get that ice cream real quick?
42:08 Yeah.
42:08 Yeah.
42:08 Yeah.
42:08 Yeah, ice cream's coming in.
42:09 Can I do that with the ice cream?
42:11 Mhm.
42:11 Do it with the ice cream.
42:12 I'm I'm uh we just ran the gauntlet here at Hot Ones.
42:19 We had a blast.
42:21 If you get a chance, go check out my film, Is This Thing On?
42:24 Starring me and Laura Durn, directed by Bradley Cooper.
42:28 And uh and watch more Hot Ones.
42:30 And I can just tell you, it's real.
42:33 It's so real.
42:35 Too real.
42:36 It's almost too real.
42:37 This is one of the realest moments.
42:38 I feel very awake.
42:50 That was tough.
42:53 Do you feel kind of alive though?
42:55 Yeah.
42:55 Much more awake than when I got here.
42:57 That's right.
42:57 Like much more.
42:58 I was super tired.
42:59 Yeah.
42:59 Those military instincts kicked in.
43:01 Yeah.
43:01 I mean, I I can't obviously again can't talk about it.
43:06 How many wings?
43:08 What is it?
43:08 Like 10 wings.
43:09 Sing.
43:12 I'm having a great time with you, Sean.
43:14 This is definitely the last time I'm ever doing this.
43:22 Hey, what's going on everybody for First We Feast.
43:24 I'm Sean Evans and you're watching Hot Ones.
43:26 It's the show with hot questions and even hotter wings.
43:28 And today we're joined by Mr.
43:30 Beast.
43:30 He's an entertainment industry juggernaut who's built an empire on challenges,
43:34 survival, stunts, enormous cash, prizes, philanthropy, and much more.
43:37 Feastables is his snack brand,
43:39 and his records shattering competition series is back for season 2.
43:42 Check out Beast Games now airing on Amazon Prime Video.
43:45 Jimmy, welcome to the show.
43:47 Thanks for having me.
43:48 Hey guys, I am terrified cuz I don't normally eat spicy food,
43:51 but this should be a lot of fun.
43:52 Yeah, I'd imagine that there's probably a reason why this has taken
43:56 more than a decade for the two of us to get together.
43:58 We we meet what like twice a year
44:00 at conferences or events and and we're always like, "Yeah,
44:03 we should do it." And uh half the reason is cuz I'm
44:06 terrified of the hot wings and the other half is we're both busy.
44:08 So decided we could make it work.
44:30 Okay, I start here.
44:33 Okay, garlic delight.
44:34 Cheers.
44:38 Okay, not too bad.
44:45 I mean, my mouth's burning a little bit.
44:47 I'm a concerned what the hell is number five if that's number one.
44:51 But so far, we're good.
44:52 Locked in, baby.
44:53 Yeah.
44:53 So, psychology is woven into the fabric of Beast Games with dilemmas that mirror
44:58 classic ethical debates like the trolley problem which was featured in season 1.
45:02 Yeah.
45:03 What if anything have you learned about human behavior hosting this show?
45:06 Like are there any patterns you've observed?
45:09 You would think people would be way more ruthless than they are?
45:12 That's what I've noticed watching the video.
45:13 Like the way people sacrifice themselves for the team,
45:16 it happens much more often than I'd expect.
45:18 And so like we have the largest cash prize in history they're competing for.
45:21 Yet sometimes people do something that worsens their odds to, you know,
45:25 help a friend they just met two weeks ago.
45:26 And so honestly, Beast Games kind of brings out
45:29 my faith in humanity quite a bit because I'm like,
45:30 "Wow, that person just turned down
45:32 a million dollars for these strangers." And so,
45:35 I don't know, but there's also double side
45:37 of it because they know the show is going
45:38 to get tens of millions of views and so
45:40 they're also worried about how they'll be portrayed on it.
45:42 So, it's not also just, you know, helping people out,
45:44 but it's so it's interesting to see all these dilemas
45:46 and to see what people care about more than others.
45:48 Um, and then the really funny part is
45:50 seeing like on TikTok after we drop these things, everyone's like, "No,
45:53 I would have just taken the million dollars." And so
45:55 it's kind of funny because that's what people say,
45:57 but then when they're in that spot, they always act differently.
46:04 Okay, let's do it.
46:11 Okay.
46:13 Tastes about the Well, okay.
46:15 So, you know, there you go.
46:18 I should swallow.
46:18 I should swallow faster.
46:20 Sometimes you just have to let the sauce speak to you a little bit.
46:23 You know, they can be a little misleading at first.
46:27 Mhm.
46:27 From burying yourself alive to spending days on end in solitary confinement.
46:31 What's the most you've ever pushed
46:32 yourself in the noble pursuit of entertainment?
46:35 So, there's three things I hate.
46:36 I really hate being in the sun cuz I'm white.
46:40 I burn like crazy.
46:41 I don't know.
46:41 I share the experience.
46:43 I understand the plate.
46:44 Yeah.
46:44 And so when we did a video, 7 days on Dessert Island,
46:47 it was basically everything I hate, like being sleepd deprived.
46:50 And then I also really hate insects.
46:51 Like having bugs bite you is annoying.
46:53 And so on day two on 7 days on Desert Island,
46:56 I woke up after sleeping on the beach.
46:58 I didn't know sand fleas were a thing.
47:00 And my leg is just covered with thousands
47:02 of little I thought I was going to die.
47:04 I was like, "What?" Like everywhere from my my waist down,
47:08 just like bug bites everywhere.
47:10 I mean, I couldn't see my skin there so much.
47:12 And I was like slightly sunburned and I was
47:14 really hot and I was like, "Nah, I'm out.
47:16 I'm out." So I quit.
47:17 It's one of the few times I've ever quit a challenge and I was just like, "No,
47:21 we got to go back." And we went back out there and we we did it,
47:24 but that first time like it was the most miserable I've ever felt in my life.
47:31 My nose is like dripping snot.
47:33 I don't know if that's a side effect, but let's keep going.
47:37 Oh, the producers must not like me.
47:39 That's a lot of sauce.
47:40 Okay.
47:41 Is this what Jennifer Anderson and everyone has?
47:44 This is the white hot mustard sauce.
47:48 Okay.
47:49 I like the taste.
47:52 I'll wait.
47:53 It really hits when you breathe.
47:54 So, I'm going to breathe.
47:57 Mhm.
47:56 Oh, yeah.
47:57 Oh, yeah.
47:58 Okay.
47:58 Let's just uh hit the milk.
48:02 Mhm.
48:01 It's time.
48:03 Okay.
48:03 So, you're known for being a mentor to countless creators on YouTube
48:07 and not gatekeeping the lessons that you've learned along the way.
48:10 So, if you'll humor me, I want to pull up the mockup of what
48:14 we expect your thumbnail to look like for this video.
48:18 Do you have any notes for our editor, Mari?
48:21 Um, I do think the background's a little noisy,
48:24 especially cuz like if you were to shrink that thumbnail down for a phone.
48:27 Wow, my tongue is actually burning.
48:29 I need to stop letting this touch my tongue.
48:31 Um um it would be kind of hard to tell.
48:35 Um so maybe just a little less noisy background, but for the most part,
48:39 this is what people have come to expect from your brand.
48:41 So it'd be weird if you deviated too much to be honest.
48:44 If there was going to be an evolution or change,
48:46 I think it would have to stem from you
48:47 because people can tell when it's authentic to you.
48:49 Hot Ones is you.
48:50 You know, there's no Hot Ones without Sean and vice versa.
48:53 So it's like if it doesn't come from you
48:55 and the audience doesn't feel that, I they're just going to revolt.
48:58 So, I could say whatever, but honestly, whatever I say,
49:00 if you actually did it, it would just piss them off.
49:02 You know what I mean?
49:08 Okay.
49:08 Habanero and peach.
49:09 That's interesting.
49:15 And this to me is the first kind of step.
49:19 I can tell because this is also the first one that's actually making me cry.
49:22 Yeah.
49:23 And then this is where I'll tell you, be careful around the eyes.
49:25 You know, you'll have this instinct.
49:27 I'm just going to put this over here and grab a new napkin.
49:29 We have lots of napkins over here.
49:31 Yeah, thank you.
49:31 That one uh is full of snot.
49:36 My airways are opening up.
49:37 I can breathe.
49:39 Clearing the sinuses.
49:40 This is nice.
49:40 I I apparently I'm sick.
49:42 I didn't know.
49:43 Do you have a take on the way
49:45 the legacy chocolate giants have reacted to upstarts like yours?
49:49 And are you at all motivated by rivalry?
49:51 A big part of festivals is there's over 1.5 million kids in illegal child
49:55 labor and Kotvar in Ghana where all almost all the world's cacao comes from.
49:59 It's in West Africa and so I actually talked
50:01 to a lot of other big chocolate companies and they're just
50:03 kind of like yeah child labor is just how you
50:05 get cacao you know there's nothing you can do about it.
50:07 So anyways I'll save the long story but that's why
50:10 with feastables we pay all our farmers a living income reference price.
50:12 We use fair trade beans but in exchange they have
50:14 to let us audit and remediate the child labor on the farm.
50:16 So we do sourcing completely different than big chocolate companies do.
50:20 So, I imagine they're not the happiest because, you know,
50:23 now that we're doing that and we're proving that you can,
50:25 you know, ethically source the cacao, you know,
50:28 it shows that they could if they wanted to.
50:29 They just don't.
50:34 Would you believe me if I told you we're at the halfway mark?
50:38 Thank God.
50:41 Oh, I took way too big of a bite.
50:42 Oh god.
50:44 We're in it, baby.
50:45 Yeah.
50:45 I need smaller bites.
50:46 Oh, yeah.
50:47 Yeah, that one.
50:48 I think that was the step up to be honest.
50:50 Like it I've I've taken like three hits of this and it's not three hits.
50:53 Yeah.
50:53 Yeah.
50:54 You've been Yeah.
50:55 The chocolate hits but not enough.
50:57 Not on these.
50:59 Um and then I would suggest maybe slowing down because sometimes the milk
51:04 problem that you create for yourself can be worse than the hot sauce problem.
51:08 I would rather have diarrhea than oh then my tongue be burning.
51:11 I don't
51:12 I'm just speaking from experience.
51:13 That's future me.
51:15 Me right now needs the tongue not to burn.
51:17 Right.
51:17 Okay, then let's continue to be instinctive.
51:20 Going to grab the jug.
51:22 Yeah, I just I don't know who needs these glasses.
51:24 I'm just chilling.
51:25 I'm going to need a lot.
51:26 I hate spicy stuff, but I'm doing this cuz
51:28 I love you and I think this would be fun.
51:30 But oh my gosh, that was only five.
51:42 Too quick and swallow.
51:46 Okay.
51:47 So, you've built this empire on escalation,
51:50 you know, bigger prizes, more money, larger scale.
51:53 Do you ever think about the ceiling of that or is
51:56 the constantly accelerating spectacle the thing that's fun for you?
52:00 Ooh.
52:00 Um, yeah.
52:02 So, we do always one Wow, speaking while your tongue is burning is interesting.
52:08 Mhm.
52:09 We do always one up everything.
52:11 But the the thing I I think most people look
52:13 at like uh one uping yourself as like linear like the only
52:16 way to do it is to give away more money
52:18 or do a bigger set which we do quite a few times,
52:21 you know, increase your prize pool or build big build bigger sets.
52:25 Um you're right.
52:26 It is getting harder.
52:27 Oh.
52:28 Mhm.
52:29 People have seen me give away a bunch of money a bunch.
52:31 They've seen me build big sets a ton.
52:33 Now the thing that will keep them coming back cuz eventually I'll get numb
52:37 to those two things I think is good stories that make you feel something.
52:40 in uh that's been my main focus and that's
52:42 like theoretically a lever over here if that makes sense.
52:46 I'm following I'm following you know no matter what you're
52:49 going through eloquent in the fog of war over here Jimmy
52:54 u let me just grab a new napkin.
52:58 Yeah.
52:57 Keep them in rotation.
53:05 Oo I like that name.
53:11 How dramatic am I compared to other people?
53:14 I like these kinds of episodes where somebody's pushed to the brink.
53:16 To be honest,
53:18 I really I don't handle the spicy stuff well.
53:20 How many Skullvilles is that?
53:23 So, this is another step, you know, like now we're approaching,
53:27 you know, now we're there's sauce in my milk, you know, and a lot going on.
53:35 So, I once heard you talk about how painful it is to see
53:38 people drop out of school or quit their jobs to pursue content full-time.
53:44 Yep.
53:44 How do you think about the balance between the ambition of chasing one's dream
53:47 and the reality that such a small percentage of the people who try breakthrough?
53:53 I think that in my case I the more I talk the more oxygen on the fire.
54:02 Do you want some ice cream?
54:03 Yes.
54:04 Ice cream would be here.
54:05 Come on in.
54:06 Oh, she was ready.
54:07 We are always ready.
54:08 We're always ready.
54:09 You knew that was coming.
54:11 If I think if I let this sit on my tongue, I can't answer the question.
54:14 Yeah, give it a shot.
54:15 Okay, this is good.
54:16 I can I'm good.
54:17 I don't feel it.
54:19 It was either I wanted to be a YouTuber, I didn't care.
54:21 If it's that important to you and you're willing
54:23 to make all those sacrifices and willing to really
54:25 go all in, then I don't think it's
54:26 as crazy and most people don't want it that bad,
54:29 then in that case, I I don't recommend you take the risk.
54:31 like only take the risk where you could
54:33 potentially I mean truly ruin your life if it
54:36 really means that much to you where you
54:37 can't envision yourself being happy unless you achieve it
54:39 and I think maybe you'd agree with this too but like being
54:43 on the inside of it unless you love it ain't worth it anyway.
54:46 Exactly.
54:46 That's the other thing like unless you really really
54:49 love what you do and love creating content like you're
54:51 going to if you were in my shoes you would
54:53 get trapped in a hell accidentally if that makes sense.
54:57 Like this
54:58 right?
54:58 Yeah.
54:59 You could be tethered to this seat eating
55:00 scorching hot chicken wings for over a decade.
55:03 All right, let's keep it going.
55:05 And including this sauce.
55:06 This is debomb beyond insanity.
55:08 Oh god, I don't Bro, I don't like the symbol.
55:10 I'm sorry.
55:11 I I screw that bottle.
55:12 I don't like the symbol on this.
55:14 This scares me.
55:19 Am I going to be okay?
55:24 Got to prepare mentally.
55:25 All right, let's do it.
55:29 Oh god.
55:30 Why are you so sure?
55:31 Huh?
55:32 I wanted a small bite.
55:36 Oh no.
55:37 So I was watching an interview that you did with Terto.
55:41 Yep.
55:41 Where you talked about how in high school you would[ __] people up and speed.
55:44 Oh yeah, I would.
55:45 Well, you know what?
55:46 That's easy to do with a clear mind.
55:48 Try doing that after you've eaten a gauntlet of scorching hot chicken wings.
55:51 So if you'll humor me, I have a I have a fast math pop quiz for you.
55:54 Okay.
55:55 All right.
55:55 If DJ Khaled taps out after the third wing on the Hot Ones gauntlet,
56:01 what percentage of the lineup remains uneaten?
56:05 Why is there hot sauce on us?
56:06 Ah, 60 70%.
56:09 Bang, bang, bang.
56:10 You're renting a studio for $5,125 per day.
56:15 If you shoot there for 12 days straight, what does your rental bill come out to?
56:22 Bro, I've never felt my tongue this way.
56:25 I'm feeling nerves on my tongue.
56:26 I didn't know I had.
56:29 I'm sorry.
56:29 I don't know what you said.
56:31 Okay, you don't have to ask again.
56:33 It's fine.
56:34 You have 88 chocolate bars to split equally in 11 care packages.
56:39 How many chocolate bars in each care package?
56:41 Eight.
56:41 That's easy.
56:42 You got that?
56:43 My tongue is burning.
56:46 You've done a brand deal that pays you 23% of $650,000 in backend revenue.
56:54 What's your checkpoint?
56:57 Hold up.
56:57 Uh-huh.
56:58 Uh, what's what's 2% of five 50,000?
57:02 That is uh uh a,000.
57:05 Um, two two Wait, you said 20 um 130,000.
57:13 Oh, wait.
57:13 But then you said the threeund or I I don't know.
57:16 I'm
57:18 close.
57:18 149,500.
57:21 How are we feeling?
57:24 You can tap if you want to,
57:27 bro.
57:28 Come on.
57:28 You think I'm going to One second.
57:30 Sorry.
57:38 It's only two more.
57:39 Well said.
57:42 This next one, if you're ready, is the smoke squash reaper X.
57:48 Bro, it's coming back.
57:49 Oh, whatever.
57:51 Whatever.
57:52 Let's do it.
57:55 Is my tongue red?
57:57 Looks actually a little white, to be honest.
57:58 I think it's I think it's the ice cream.
58:00 The ice cream.
58:01 Okay.
58:01 Um I'm sorry, guys.
58:04 This interview is not going to get any better.
58:06 I'm sorry.
58:14 From a $100,000 sundae to a $70,000 pizza,
58:19 you've tried some of the most expensive food stuffs in the world.
58:23 Which ultral luxe menu item was most worth its outrageous price tag?
58:27 None of them.
58:28 None of them.
58:29 Bro, it's crazy cuz like a a $5 smash burger will taste
58:32 better than a $70,000 golden pizza with like black truffles on it.
58:36 I h I do not like expensive food.
58:40 It's weird.
58:40 Like, you're not missing out like at all.
58:43 The the when the the more expensive like caviar, I don't like caviar at all.
58:48 It's just It's just like fish eggs.
58:49 Who?
58:51 Oh my gosh.
58:53 I need more ice.
58:59 What were you talking about?
59:02 All right, Mr.
59:03 Beast.
59:04 You can call me Jimmy.
59:10 I don't want this.
59:11 We We'll keep it how it is.
59:15 Bro, smoke coming out of my mouth.
59:17 No, but in post, we can make it happen.
59:19 How much How long does this last?
59:21 You know what?
59:21 And this is the This is the truth.
59:25 After you leave the studio for 20 minutes, you'll be floating a little bit,
59:30 but then it'll clear and you'll almost feel like you could do it again.
59:34 Okay.
59:34 I am starting to feel in my stomach.
59:36 My gosh.
59:37 Hey, there's a lot of ice cream, a lot of milk.
59:42 I I just feel burning pain.
59:44 You don't have to eat it.
59:47 No, I'm not quitting.
59:51 Bro, I swear people are going to put me
59:52 in like TikTok edits beside other celebrities and be like,
59:54 "Oh, it's not that bad."
59:57 Please tell me most people struggle.
59:59 No matter what you're going through, no matter how silly you feel,
1:00:02 way crazier things have already happened on this show.
1:00:05 You know, there's a long legacy.
1:00:06 There's a long the Tik Tok edits are
1:00:09 just going to find the one person that's like,
1:00:10 "Oh, that's not that bad." They're not going to put me.
1:00:12 Don't think about the Tik Tok edits at a time like this.
1:00:15 WE'RE ONE BITE.
1:00:16 WE'RE ONE BITE AWAY.
1:00:18 We're one bite away from GETTING THERE.
1:00:20 MAKING FUN OF ME.
1:00:20 We're one bite away from getting there.
1:00:23 What they'll do is they'll admire the determination
1:00:25 to get through this despite the odds.
1:00:28 Yes.
1:00:28 I'm shaping Totally.
1:00:29 That's what you guys are going to do.
1:00:30 I'm shaping the narrative right now.
1:00:32 That's what they're going to do.
1:00:33 I'm shaping the narrative right now.
1:00:35 I feel like I'm going to throw up.
1:00:37 Let's do it.
1:00:45 And with that, the wings of death are behind us.
1:00:48 You have conquered the hot winds gauntlet.
1:00:50 And to close things out, you published a video called Hi,
1:00:54 Me in 10 years, where you talked to your future self,
1:00:57 a 17-year-old Jimmy Donaldson.
1:00:59 Yeah.
1:01:00 With a trillion Scovilles coursing through your veins,
1:01:02 I'm wondering if you could send another message to your future self.
1:01:05 And if you want, you can stare down the barrel of the camera.
1:01:09 What would you tell Jimmy in 10 years if he's considering doing Hot Ones again?
1:01:15 Don't.
1:01:15 It's not worth it.
1:01:16 You're not worth it.
1:01:17 It's literally not worth it.
1:01:19 Sean's cool.
1:01:23 It's not worth it.
1:01:24 M.
1:01:25 And with that,
1:01:28 I'm never eating again.
1:01:30 Jimmy, you have taken on the Hot Ones gauntlet and lived to tell the tale.
1:01:33 Now there's nothing left to do but roll out the red carpet for you.
1:01:36 This camera, this camera, or this camera,
1:01:38 let the people know what you have going on in your life.
1:01:45 Um, well, I just dropped Beast Game season 2 if you want to watch it.
1:01:49 I actually I think I'm going to throw up.
1:01:52 I'm going to go TO THE TOILET.
1:01:58 THAT'S HOT.
1:02:03 Do you feel that way?
1:02:03 I know.
1:02:04 Like, do you want to run?
1:02:06 I might go to it real quick.
1:02:07 Yeah.
1:02:07 Yeah.
1:02:07 Yeah.
1:02:07 Yeah.
1:02:08 Yeah.
1:02:09 Uh, I need to wash my hands.
1:02:11 That's hot as[ __] Oh my god.
1:02:19 Go ahead.
1:02:19 What do I do?
1:02:20 You just survived.
1:02:21 I have nothing to do.
1:02:22 You just hold on.
1:02:27 Hey, what's going on everybody for First We Feast.
1:02:29 I'm Sean Evans and you're watching Hot Ones.
1:02:31 It's the show with hot questions and even
1:02:32 hotter wings and today we're joined by Madison Beer.
1:02:35 She's a Grammy Award nominated singer, songwriter, and producer.
1:02:37 Her latest album, Lock It,
1:02:39 is out now and she's about to embark on an arena tour this summer.
1:02:41 Be on the lookout for show dates near you.
1:02:43 But in the meantime, it's a goround with the Wings of Death.
1:02:46 Madison Beer, welcome to the show.
1:02:48 Thank you.
1:02:48 I'm like welling with tears.
1:02:50 I can't believe I'm here.
1:02:51 And we haven't even started.
1:02:52 I know.
1:02:52 I'm just so excited.
1:02:53 What's going through your head as you prepare to take on the Hot Ones gauntlet?
1:02:56 Are you someone who enjoys spicy food?
1:02:59 Um, I wasn't my whole life and then recently
1:03:02 I've embarked on like the Bulldog Ramen level of spice.
1:03:05 Where do you like Where would that rank?
1:03:07 It's not a nothing.
1:03:09 It's not enough.
1:03:09 It's a good foundation that you have.
1:03:11 It's not a nothing.
1:03:12 Um, but no, growing up I never really liked spicy foods,
1:03:14 but I don't think it's cuz I I just never tried it.
1:03:16 So, once I started trying it, I became into it.
1:03:19 A whole new world opened up.
1:03:21 Or maybe I was just training subconsciously for this moment right here.
1:03:47 So this is called garlic delight.
1:03:48 Okay, that doesn't sound bad.
1:03:51 I'm like, where's a safe spot?
1:03:59 Mhm.
1:04:00 I've been here, I think.
1:04:06 Nothing alarming.
1:04:07 A little bit, actually.
1:04:08 Oh, no.
1:04:09 Oh, no.
1:04:10 Oh, gosh.
1:04:11 I'm not touching this yet.
1:04:12 All right, then.
1:04:12 Neither am I.
1:04:13 We're in a standoff.
1:04:14 Oh, no.
1:04:15 It's spicy.
1:04:16 So, in the past, I've interviewed comedians about
1:04:18 the qualities that make a great first joke
1:04:20 to tell on stage and the qualities that make a great last joke to tell on stage.
1:04:23 And I wonder if there's a correlary in pop music.
1:04:26 Like, when you have an album like Locket,
1:04:28 what makes Locket theme the right kind of sound to open up the album?
1:04:31 And then what makes a song like nothing at all the right one to close it out?
1:04:34 Oh my god, that's so cool that you know that.
1:04:37 I think for me, I kind of always have liked ending on sort of an emotional note.
1:04:43 Nothing at all I felt like was a cool one for me to end with because
1:04:45 it felt sort of like this message that I kind of wanted to leave the album with.
1:04:49 And then Locket theme.
1:04:50 I love that one cuz I think it just opens in this dreamy
1:04:53 sort of landscape and you just get kind of brought in.
1:04:56 It's like a hypnotizing kind of wall of sound there with the har.
1:04:59 Thank you.
1:04:59 Exactly.
1:05:00 I just wanted I wanted it to also I
1:05:02 think it was more lyrically what I was focused on.
1:05:04 So the intro is really talking to like my fans directly and our relationship
1:05:08 and all that stuff and then the ending was kind of like a personal note.
1:05:11 One wing down and it was spicy.
1:05:13 But the only way out is through.
1:05:15 The only way out is through.
1:05:16 All right, so up next is a pickled garlic Sriracha.
1:05:19 I'm scared.
1:05:20 I shouldn't be this scared this soon.
1:05:26 That was a bigger bite than I intended.
1:05:33 That one's less spicy.
1:05:35 Is there a Carolina?
1:05:36 What is that one?
1:05:36 The the Carolina Reaper.
1:05:38 Every lineup has a Carolina Reaper.
1:05:40 Oh, cool.
1:05:40 I'm just letting you know I'm a chicken
1:05:42 wing talk show host of the highest dignity.
1:05:44 I try to be transparent from the side of the table.
1:05:46 Right.
1:05:47 Thank you.
1:05:48 So whether it's sampling the elevator ding
1:05:50 in severance or taking the keep calm mantra
1:05:53 and turning on it on its head for a song like stay numb and carry on.
1:05:56 Oh my goodness.
1:05:57 Your music, your visuals, they often times mix in some comedy with the drama.
1:06:02 As a songwriter, what do you see as the role
1:06:04 of humor and otherwise sad or emotionally heavy songs?
1:06:08 This is really cool.
1:06:09 I well okay so severance I just am obsessed
1:06:12 with that show it's my favorite show and when we were
1:06:14 writing complexity which is the song it's in I wrote
1:06:18 a lyric that was like remember the time you severed me
1:06:20 just had to shout them out and I was like
1:06:22 we must put the doorbell ding which actually I think we
1:06:24 had to remake the ding cuz I don't think we
1:06:27 actually got it clear so we had to like remake it
1:06:31 tried to sample it they were like no and so we had to remake
1:06:33 it but I'm someone who like I need that comedic relief throughout heaviness
1:06:38 and I think I sometimes like I tend to sway a bit dark
1:06:42 and deep when I talk whether it's in an interview or podcast I've done whatever.
1:06:46 I feel like I get a little bit intense sometimes.
1:06:48 So I'm trying to learn how to soften those things.
1:06:51 And I think on my album those are those moments where I'm like,
1:06:52 "Okay, we can throw in something that feels fun." Okay.
1:07:00 I'm trying to also savor everything because I've wanted to do this for so
1:07:03 long that I'm like I don't want to move through it too fast.
1:07:05 Oh, I can slow it down.
1:07:06 This is great.
1:07:07 I'm just happy to be here, man.
1:07:09 So, up next is a white hot mustard sauce here in the three spot.
1:07:14 Do you guys make all of these?
1:07:15 So, we make a couple of them.
1:07:17 We make
1:07:17 Okay.
1:07:17 I'm looking at the one that's a hot
1:07:18 second one, the middle one, and the last one.
1:07:21 The last one.
1:07:28 That one's good.
1:07:30 Is there a vocal warm-up or exercise that you swear
1:07:32 by, no matter how silly it may look to the outside world?
1:07:36 Ooh, you know what?
1:07:36 I am definitely not the best with that and I just will be
1:07:40 in my dressing room beforehand listening to whatever album or soundtrack that I
1:07:44 love the most of the time and I'll just sing through songs
1:07:47 I love which probably isn't the best way to warm up your vocals.
1:07:50 So don't take my advice but that's personally what
1:07:52 I do and I'm not going to lie to you.
1:07:58 If Gordon Ramsay was reacting the way he reacted, I'm really scared.
1:08:13 Look at that shrug.
1:08:14 That's a confident shrug right there.
1:08:18 This is easy.
1:08:19 No.
1:08:19 No.
1:08:20 Yeah.
1:08:20 Right.
1:08:20 So, what I was about to say about this sauce is it's smoked habanero and peach.
1:08:25 So, I think you get the peach up front, right?
1:08:27 M y switch.
1:08:29 Exactly.
1:08:30 That kind of Trojan horse is in that heat
1:08:33 that's on the other side.
1:08:34 Cuz if you're good, I'm not.
1:08:35 I can feel it in my chest already.
1:08:37 I feel it.
1:08:38 Same wavelength.
1:08:39 I'm really scared.
1:08:40 I'm trying to be cool here.
1:08:41 And I I'm really afraid.
1:08:42 It's all right.
1:08:43 You know, no matter what you're going through,
1:08:44 no matter how silly you feel like you look on this show,
1:08:47 way weirder things have happened on this side.
1:08:49 I've I've seen all of it.
1:08:50 Watched every episode.
1:08:53 from the talkbox to a looping machine.
1:08:55 What's your favorite piece of equipment in the studio
1:08:58 to just mess around with in between?
1:09:00 I really love That's awesome that you know about my talkbox endeavor.
1:09:03 I played it on my first ever I saw you on stage.
1:09:06 Yeah.
1:09:06 Yes.
1:09:06 I played it and I don't know that I was so great at it.
1:09:10 You have to like boil the tube to make it sound the tube.
1:09:13 I didn't.
1:09:14 So mine was like really hard and really tough to use and I
1:09:18 execution it sounded good.
1:09:19 I wouldn't have known.
1:09:20 You didn't tell me.
1:09:20 my song Fools, honorary mention to Fools.
1:09:23 Um, I played it.
1:09:24 I have a little bit of a talkbox vocoder thing happening
1:09:28 and I played it on my first tour and people were like,
1:09:31 "Why does she have this tube in her mouth?" And I don't know,
1:09:34 I just feel like I love a lot of those sounds.
1:09:35 I'm a huge Da Punk fan.
1:09:36 Stevie Wonder that there's so many people
1:09:38 that I think use those kinds of things.
1:09:40 Vocoder is something that I love the most.
1:09:43 Sorry, this is a long-winded answer and I think
1:09:45 it's cuz I'm like my throat's closing maybe a bit.
1:09:47 Yeah, but you know what?
1:09:48 I know every stall tactic in the book.
1:09:49 All right.
1:09:50 Absolutely.
1:09:50 You're a seasoned vet
1:09:51 over the years.
1:09:52 Yeah.
1:09:52 Yeah.
1:09:52 Yeah.
1:09:52 Vocoder though is my final answer.
1:09:54 I love vocoder.
1:09:56 Well, if that's your final answer, that means
1:09:57 that means we're moving on to another wing.
1:09:59 I know how this goes.
1:10:01 Okay, this is yours.
1:10:06 My bus broke down there one year.
1:10:08 Amario.
1:10:09 Shout out to Amaro.
1:10:10 Yeah.
1:10:10 And I went to this place called the Big
1:10:11 Texan and they have like a crazy challenge.
1:10:14 They have a like a Wow.
1:10:15 The synergy challenge putting on the big situation.
1:10:18 This is perfect.
1:10:19 Okay.
1:10:19 Cheers.
1:10:21 Cheers.
1:10:23 I'm like analyzing every wing before I bite it for like the least saucy part,
1:10:28 but I feel like that's cheating.
1:10:29 And I Well, and you know what?
1:10:31 You can't anyway.
1:10:31 All right, we got some full coverage.
1:10:34 You guys know what you're doing.
1:10:35 I know.
1:10:37 Not bad.
1:10:38 We're halfway done.
1:10:39 I'm standing tall.
1:10:40 The one before, I would say, is spicier for me.
1:10:44 Dancing on it.
1:10:45 Thank you.
1:10:46 From Jericho Deli to Kitchen Cabaret, Bagel Boss, and beyond.
1:10:50 What is Poundforpound the best place to get a breakfast sandwich in the 516?
1:10:54 Oh my god.
1:10:56 Amazing.
1:10:57 Um, wow.
1:11:00 So, Bagel Boss is probably where where you'll find me.
1:11:03 Do you want to know my order?
1:11:04 Yeah, of course.
1:11:05 Am I okay?
1:11:06 Um, it's a little weird maybe to some.
1:11:10 To me, it's not.
1:11:10 My mom is here.
1:11:11 This is her order.
1:11:12 Been passed down to me.
1:11:13 Plain bagel, toasted.
1:11:16 I can't think.
1:11:17 Egg whites, monster cheese, salt and pepper.
1:11:21 Give it a go.
1:11:22 Let me know what you think.
1:11:23 If you can only recommend one,
1:11:25 Ralph's Italian Ices or a frapple from the Jericho Cider Mill.
1:11:30 You're goated for this.
1:11:32 Um, I would recommend what was the first one?
1:11:36 My brain is turning off.
1:11:38 Ralph's Italian.
1:11:39 Ralph's Italian is by far.
1:11:40 That's why I was like, wait, what did you say?
1:11:41 I have been going there my entire life.
1:11:43 Um, Blue Hawaii is my favorite flavor.
1:11:46 Second up would be vanilla chip.
1:11:50 Can't go wrong.
1:11:50 I sometimes will go crazy and do a double scoop.
1:11:54 Yeah, get wild with it.
1:11:54 It's a little bit of a weird combo cuz one
1:11:56 is like a milky one and one's an icy one, but it works for me.
1:12:00 Can you describe your ideal afternoon itinerary at Brandt
1:12:03 Lake in New York in as much detail as possible?
1:12:05 Oh my god, I'm going to start crying.
1:12:07 You're pulling on my heartstrings.
1:12:08 Um, I just have to say like summer camp was my favorite thing growing up.
1:12:13 And once I started all of this, that was the most devastating part
1:12:16 was not being able to go cuz I was like working at 13, which was ridiculous.
1:12:19 But the best day would be waking up.
1:12:21 I would always do the early bird ski.
1:12:24 Love to water ski.
1:12:25 I can sort of solemn ski a little bit.
1:12:27 Fun fact about me, not many know.
1:12:29 Do some arts and crafts.
1:12:30 I would ideally be in a play that year, be practicing for said play,
1:12:34 maybe hit a tubing moment and then eat
1:12:38 dinner and they had really fun evening activities.
1:12:40 They would always have like these fun crazy games.
1:12:41 I loved the trivia game.
1:12:43 Basically, it was just a cooking tray they would put upside down and put
1:12:45 a spatula on it and that's how you like said you had the answer.
1:12:48 But I was always really good at the random trivia.
1:12:50 And so I loved I loved that night.
1:12:53 This is amazing.
1:12:54 The fact that we're talking about my summer camp is awesome.
1:12:57 I'm so happy.
1:12:58 But I know
1:13:00 you know all too well the sequencing here.
1:13:02 Back to reality.
1:13:03 This next one is called Homegrown Hell.
1:13:05 We're in the back half now.
1:13:07 Picturing Brent Lake.
1:13:09 Exactly.
1:13:09 Go to Go to a happy place.
1:13:11 We're in the back half now.
1:13:12 All right.
1:13:14 I'm fearful.
1:13:23 I think I just have been mentally
1:13:24 preparing for this my whole life without knowing.
1:13:26 Well, yeah.
1:13:26 I can tell.
1:13:27 Thank you.
1:13:27 I can tell calm under pressure.
1:13:29 When you were doing the intro, I was like,
1:13:30 I can do it for you if you would like.
1:13:32 I know every word you're about to say.
1:13:35 Is there an achievement of yours that's meant most to you personally in terms
1:13:38 of really validating your roller coaster
1:13:41 journey through the trenches of pop music?
1:13:43 The trenches they have been because I've never
1:13:46 really achieved some of those like, you know, pillars.
1:13:48 I have been able to just be way more grateful for the stuff that feels
1:13:51 really real and is my fans and those people who show up and whatnot.
1:13:55 So, that's what I'm really proud of the most.
1:13:57 Um, I'm playing Madison Square Garden this year,
1:13:59 which is insane and has been just as much of my dream as doing this show.
1:14:02 So,
1:14:03 yeah, checking a lot of the boxes.
1:14:05 This is like seriously though, I would say Madison Square Garden,
1:14:08 you maybe like getting a Grammy, but now I've been nominated.
1:14:11 I'm like, it's okay.
1:14:12 Like, the nomination has checked it off a bit.
1:14:13 It's like a, you know, it's like a light check.
1:14:16 It's like a pencil that's like light.
1:14:18 You know what else?
1:14:19 You're also just four wings away from conquering the Hot Ones gauntlet.
1:14:23 Dude, this is a big
1:14:24 one after another.
1:14:26 putting them up, knocking them down.
1:14:28 I'm like I'm kind of afraid.
1:14:30 Am I okay that I'm not reacting to this?
1:14:32 Well, let's see how it goes.
1:14:33 Okay.
1:14:33 Right.
1:14:33 This is where we're at.
1:14:34 Let's not get ahead of ourselves.
1:14:35 I know the bomb is the scary the one that I'm fearing.
1:14:38 Yeah.
1:14:38 Yeah.
1:14:39 But you don't want to get too cocky.
1:14:40 You know, you don't want to start celebrating before the finish line.
1:14:42 That's when we catch a cramp, you know?
1:14:44 For sure.
1:14:45 Oh, a cramp.
1:14:46 Okay.
1:14:46 Looking out for that.
1:14:48 All right.
1:14:48 So, up next, Nirvana.
1:14:51 Nirvana.
1:14:52 Okay.
1:15:00 Dragon's breath sauce.
1:15:02 That's appealing.
1:15:05 Oh, it is dragon's breath.
1:15:06 I just When I felt it, I really experienced the dragon's breath.
1:15:10 Oh my god.
1:15:12 Same page.
1:15:12 We're both riding the same wave right now.
1:15:14 I took a really big bite.
1:15:17 Am I in danger?
1:15:18 No.
1:15:19 No.
1:15:19 You're going to be okay.
1:15:20 Remember, you've prepared for this your whole life.
1:15:22 All right.
1:15:22 You've got this.
1:15:23 You've got this.
1:15:24 Wow, that really that was a punch in the face.
1:15:26 I asked for it.
1:15:27 And you know what?
1:15:27 This is a long winding question with some context up front.
1:15:30 So, you'll have a beat.
1:15:31 You'll have a beat.
1:15:32 All right.
1:15:33 So, from the freezing temperatures of a New
1:15:36 Year's Eve performance in Time Square to scrambling
1:15:39 for replacement rings before the Victoria Secret to even
1:15:43 performing at La Palooa when you were a teenager,
1:15:46 what stands out as like the most nerve-wracking live gig of your career so far?
1:15:51 Probably this.
1:15:54 No.
1:15:54 Um, I'm crying a bit.
1:15:56 Um, I'm not going to touch my eyes.
1:15:57 I know.
1:15:57 I know.
1:15:58 I know.
1:15:58 That's You're about to say that.
1:16:03 I So lives.
1:16:07 So, Jimmy Fallon was scary because I had really wanted to do it for a long time.
1:16:12 Wow, I'm fully crying.
1:16:14 This is insane.
1:16:15 when you're performing in an intimate club versus a massive arena.
1:16:19 I know the tunnel vision starts to happen,
1:16:21 but you and me, we're on the same page here.
1:16:24 I'm curious, what's the trade-off for an artist?
1:16:26 Like, what did you ask me?
1:16:27 When you're performing, all right, in a small venue performing in a small
1:16:31 versus a massive arena.
1:16:32 What's the tradeoff for an artist?
1:16:34 Like, is there something that you can do in a 500 capacity
1:16:37 room that maybe you couldn't at say the forum or vice versa?
1:16:41 Oh my gosh.
1:16:41 Okay.
1:16:42 Well, to be honest with you, sometimes, not always,
1:16:44 but sometimes the smaller venues are scarier because
1:16:47 you can see every single person's face very clearly.
1:16:50 And so, if one person's not into it,
1:16:52 you just see them like, "What is that was really bad," you know?
1:16:54 And it's a little more intimidating.
1:16:57 Personally, for me, like when I've performed on a bigger stage,
1:17:00 let's say at a festival or whatnot, um I'm less nervous.
1:17:04 My lips burn.
1:17:05 I know.
1:17:06 I know, man.
1:17:07 I apologize.
1:17:08 I apologize on behalf of the show.
1:17:10 Um, I I feel What was I talking about?
1:17:15 The the scale and the spectacle of a big crowd.
1:17:18 It's more abstract and therefore you can kind of forget that you
1:17:21 have so many eyeballs on you cuz it just looks like who,
1:17:25 you know, love you and are there and then you can kind of like
1:17:28 disassociate a bit like I'm trying to do now.
1:17:30 But in the small rooms, you can't go anywhere.
1:17:32 You're just like you're there and you're just like, "Oh, hey Carl.
1:17:36 Hey Nancy." Like you see everyone.
1:17:37 You know everyone.
1:17:38 It's just sometimes a little scarier.
1:17:40 So, I'm excited for this next tour cuz I'm
1:17:42 doing some of the biggest shows I've ever done.
1:17:45 No, no, no.
1:17:45 I can't.
1:17:46 I'm doing it, but I'm I can I can
1:17:52 This is beyond insanity.
1:17:54 It is that moment.
1:17:54 Oh my god.
1:18:00 I'm just also really I genuinely am trying
1:18:02 to soak this up because I know once it's over,
1:18:04 I'm going to be like, "Wow, I did that."
1:18:06 Come back.
1:18:08 I would love to.
1:18:09 I'll co-host the show with you if you would like me to.
1:18:13 Can you hit me with a Hey, what's going on?
1:18:14 So nice to meet you.
1:18:15 Hey, what's going on everybody?
1:18:17 I'm Sean Evans with First We Feast and today
1:18:19 we have the amazingly talented Shaun Evans on the show.
1:18:22 Was that good?
1:18:23 I'm trying to remember what you said.
1:18:24 Okay.
1:18:25 Okay.
1:18:27 Right.
1:18:28 It is the exhale first.
1:18:29 Okay.
1:18:30 Okay.
1:18:34 Mhm.
1:18:34 Was that a decent bite?
1:18:36 That was great.
1:18:37 Textbook.
1:18:39 My right eye is going like I can't see out of it anymore.
1:18:42 Yeah, but just don't touch.
1:18:43 All right.
1:18:43 No touching.
1:18:43 Be very careful.
1:18:44 No touching.
1:18:44 No touching.
1:18:45 No touching.
1:18:49 Hands up.
1:18:50 Okay.
1:18:50 As a collector of vintage books,
1:18:52 is there a title on your shelf you'd describe as your holy grail?
1:18:56 I like to collect these really Wow.
1:18:58 I'm not okay.
1:18:59 I don't think I like to collect these
1:19:01 really random like books, fairy books, weird things that people write about.
1:19:09 I like old psychology books.
1:19:11 I think it's interesting to see how far we've come with the study of psychology.
1:19:15 Do you mind?
1:19:16 Yeah.
1:19:16 Go ahead.
1:19:17 Go ahead.
1:19:18 Oh my god.
1:19:19 Go ahead.
1:19:20 What do I do?
1:19:21 You just survived nothing to do.
1:19:22 You just survive it.
1:19:23 You just survive it.
1:19:24 I'm going to crop the mic.
1:19:25 Cut it down.
1:19:27 Tear tear tear this place inside out.
1:19:29 Oh my god.
1:19:29 It's the least we can do.
1:19:32 What in your opinion is the greatest Shell Silverstein
1:19:34 book or poem and what's your case for it?
1:19:36 I have The Giving Tree tattooed.
1:19:37 That's Shell Silverstein, right?
1:19:39 I'm like I don't know anything anymore.
1:19:41 I have The Giving Tree tattooed on my ankle because I feel like reading
1:19:45 it as one of my first books ever really like I loved I loved it
1:19:53 and I thought it was really a beautiful story and I think giving and and being
1:19:59 a kind person is very important and I think that book taught me that.
1:20:03 Do I look okay?
1:20:04 Am I crying?
1:20:05 We're just thinking about the giving tree.
1:20:06 All right.
1:20:07 in in the kind of impact.
1:20:08 I feel like right now
1:20:14 my eyes are burning just from being like near it.
1:20:17 Welcome to my world.
1:20:18 How do you do this?
1:20:19 Okay.
1:20:20 Smoke squash.
1:20:21 Reaper X.
1:20:23 Okay.
1:20:23 You were looking for that Reaper moment.
1:20:24 I know.
1:20:24 Here is my Reaper moment.
1:20:26 Yay.
1:20:35 Well, I'm feeling
1:20:43 I'm feeling like I can't speak because it's going to come up and attack me.
1:20:47 It's going to hear you talking.
1:20:48 Yeah, it's like it's like, "Oh, you thought that's funny."
1:20:51 F Mary Kill Video Game Edition.
1:20:53 Fall Guys Outlast.
1:20:55 Dress to impress.
1:20:56 Okay, wait.
1:20:57 I'm replacing Outlast with Fortnite just to make it harder for myself.
1:21:02 Fall Guys feels like a very important one for me because
1:21:04 I played it with my fans a lot when I was
1:21:06 streaming a little bit randomly and they would always try
1:21:08 to grab me and throw me off and I was like, "What?
1:21:11 We're supposed to be allies here." And so
1:21:13 that was probably one that I can't take off, but Fortnite I would marry.
1:21:19 I love Fortnite.
1:21:20 They've changed it too much now though.
1:21:21 I'm a little bit upset with you Epic Games because let them have it.
1:21:24 It's No, seriously.
1:21:25 Let's let's speak really quickly.
1:21:26 Let's get serious.
1:21:28 Stop changing things that we love about Fortnite.
1:21:30 Keep it original and keep it I don't know which camera to look at.
1:21:33 I'm looking at both.
1:21:34 And give me a skin, please.
1:21:36 And my watch came undone.
1:21:38 That's all.
1:21:40 All right, Madison.
1:21:41 Oh, we dab it.
1:21:42 Yes.
1:21:43 Oh my god.
1:21:44 I've always wanted to do this.
1:21:45 Sorry.
1:21:46 I'm going to be so embarrassed after I watch this.
1:21:47 Why was I like going like this?
1:21:54 Is it poisonous?
1:21:56 Oh my goodness.
1:21:56 Okay, I guess I'm going to find out.
1:21:58 I've
1:21:58 made it so far.
1:21:59 All right, 10 years in counting.
1:22:00 I'm still standing.
1:22:03 Cheers.
1:22:04 Cheers.
1:22:04 This has been a dream come true.
1:22:06 And I mean that for both of us.
1:22:07 Maybe I'm speaking too soon.
1:22:09 You I'm taking a bite of this part.
1:22:11 Yeah, I have to.
1:22:12 You have to.
1:22:12 We're here.
1:22:13 All right.
1:22:16 Okay.
1:22:18 Oh my god.
1:22:20 Oh my god.
1:22:21 I took the biggest bite ever.
1:22:23 But that's the way to go out.
1:22:25 I had to.
1:22:26 You have now conquered I ate half the wing.
1:22:29 The Hot Ones gauntlet.
1:22:30 And to close things out, you know,
1:22:32 I think if there's a theme or a thesis to this era of your career,
1:22:36 it's that you're in total lockep with your instincts.
1:22:39 Even saying when you listen to your gut, things turn out better.
1:22:43 Now that you've conquered the world's spiciest wings, I'm curious,
1:22:46 what is your gut saying to you right now?
1:22:48 Run, get out, leave quickly.
1:22:51 No.
1:22:51 Um, I think that that's really cool and I appreciate you saying that and I
1:22:56 think I'm someone that I've been really
1:22:58 scared to honestly even do something like this.
1:23:00 I've always wanted to, but like putting myself
1:23:02 out there and I guess just, you know,
1:23:04 having it just be this is has been intimidating for me as someone who grew
1:23:07 up on social media with like the level of scrutiny that I think came with that.
1:23:10 As a very young person,
1:23:12 it's been scary for me to put myself out there or want to.
1:23:15 My eyes are welling.
1:23:15 Once again, I'm not emotional.
1:23:17 I'm just It's this.
1:23:18 It's this guy.
1:23:19 Um, oh my god.
1:23:21 It's a bait and switch one.
1:23:23 I know.
1:23:24 I know.
1:23:24 And it's the 10 that you've eaten.
1:23:27 But look it.
1:23:28 It's all over.
1:23:29 It's done.
1:23:30 We can roll curtains.
1:23:32 And now there's nothing left.
1:23:33 No, I need to finish my answer.
1:23:35 I need to
1:23:36 for me, for you, for us.
1:23:39 Um, what was I saying?
1:23:40 What was I talking about?
1:23:41 Don't tell me.
1:23:42 Um, my gut says put yourself out there.
1:23:46 do what feels good to you because life will pass you by.
1:23:49 And I know that if I didn't do
1:23:50 this or I didn't do things that felt like fun things,
1:23:53 put myself out there.
1:23:54 What because of people who hate on me, I'm not going to give them that.
1:23:58 I want to do the things that feel fun and good to me.
1:24:01 Um, and that's inclusive of my music.
1:24:02 And I want to make music that feels good to me.
1:24:05 Whether it's charting or not, I just want to do things that feel good to me.
1:24:09 And I hope that people can do the same.
1:24:12 I really hope people can do the same.
1:24:14 Words to live by.
1:24:15 And look at you, Madison Beard, taking on the wings of death.
1:24:19 Living to tell the tale.
1:24:20 And now there's nothing left to do but roll out the red carpet for you.
1:24:22 This camera, this camera, this camera.
1:24:24 Let the people know what you have going on in your life.
1:24:28 This is what I have going on.
1:24:30 And come see me on tour.
1:24:32 I promise I'm going to put on a good show and listen to my album,
1:24:36 Lock It, and be nice to people and love you guys.
1:24:40 And thanks for having me.
1:24:42 OKAY.
1:24:46 OH MY GOD.
1:24:53 WOW.
1:24:53 Thank you so much.
1:24:55 And then the last thing we'll do is they'll do this like slow zoom up.
1:24:58 Yeah.
1:24:59 Come on.
1:24:59 I'm not
1:25:01 I'm a huge fan.
1:25:02 What's your favorite one?
1:25:04 Dude, honestly, I love Gordon.
1:25:07 Like me Gordon's episode.
1:25:08 I think he's just so[ __] funny.
1:25:10 But
1:25:10 that was such a big moment for us, you know?
1:25:12 Like I always felt like like I felt like the internet
1:25:14 kind of peer pressured us into a room together, you know?
1:25:17 For sure.
1:25:17 Well, it's like he's who you are like I want to see on the show.
1:25:20 Yeah.
1:25:20 Yeah.
1:25:21 I'm trying to think though.
1:25:23 Oh, Jennifer Lawrence was What do you mean?
1:25:24 What do you mean?
1:25:26 And you understand kind of the emotional roller coaster.
1:25:29 Yeah.
1:25:30 Fully get it, man.
1:25:31 What do I do?
1:25:36 This made by a bakery in Vermont of all places.
1:25:39 You know, you guys supposed to be chill.
1:25:45 Hey, what's going on everybody?
1:25:47 For First We Feast, I'm Sean Evans and you're watching Hot Ones.
1:25:49 It's the show with hot questions and even hotter wings.
1:25:52 And today we're joined by Daniel Radcliffe.
1:25:54 He's an Emmy award nominated actor whose work
1:25:55 spans everything from intimate indies to billion-dollar franchises,
1:25:58 the theater and beyond.
1:25:59 If you're in New York,
1:26:00 catch him on his return to Broadway
1:26:01 in Every Brilliant Thing at the Hudson Theater.
1:26:03 And he also stars opposite Tracy Morgan in the NBC
1:26:06 comedy series The Fallen Rise of Reggie Dinkens,
1:26:08 which is set to premiere on February 23rd.
1:26:10 Daniel Radcliffe, welcome to the show.
1:26:12 Thank you very much for for having me back.
1:26:14 Yeah.
1:26:15 What's going through your head as you prepare to take
1:26:16 on the gauntlet this time outside of the comfort of your own home?
1:26:20 Yeah.
1:26:20 So, I do have to I I'm coming here today with uh a story and a recommendation,
1:26:24 which is that you need to do like exit interviews
1:26:28 or catchup interviews or something because we did this 5 years ago.
1:26:32 My girlfriend was in the apartment.
1:26:33 I was like, I[ __] nailed that.
1:26:35 Like that was fine.
1:26:36 It was like they were hot, but like I was all right.
1:26:38 Three hours later, I'm sorry we're about to eat,
1:26:40 but like lasers coming out of my ass and and and and my mouth.
1:26:46 Like it was both ends.
1:26:47 It was bad.
1:26:49 And I was I had been so cocky
1:26:51 before that that my girlfriend was entirely unsympathetic.
1:26:54 She was just like, "You did this to yourself." And also,
1:26:56 we're unbearable about how well it had gone.
1:26:58 So, I'm like not giving you that much sympathy.
1:27:01 Uh but I was in real I was in a bad way.
1:27:04 I'm just saying I feel like what I'll do today is I'll send a text, okay,
1:27:09 after we're done.
1:27:09 Like when I next go to the bathroom,
1:27:11 I'll let you know how it goes cuz I
1:27:13 do feel like that's how these all need to end.
1:27:38 Great.
1:27:39 Awesome.
1:27:45 This is very nice.
1:27:52 Yeah, this was very nice.
1:27:53 This is well well done.
1:27:54 Garlic delight.
1:27:55 Yeah, garlic delight.
1:27:56 So, I'd imagine playing the straight man in a two-hander opposite
1:28:00 Tracy Morgan is an actor's dream in a lot of ways.
1:28:03 Was there a day on set or a scene where
1:28:05 you began to really recognize your potential as a comedy duo?
1:28:09 What Tracy can do is unteachable and unlearnable.
1:28:12 He is just one of the most naturally
1:28:13 funny human beings I've ever spent time around.
1:28:16 The original pitch was just like,
1:28:18 "We just think you and Tracy together is a weird, insane combination,
1:28:21 and we like the idea of him being crazy and you trying to corral him."
1:28:26 He is exactly what you expect in that like he will every day you're with Tracy,
1:28:31 he'll say like four or five of the most
1:28:33 insane things you've ever heard a human being say,
1:28:35 but then also he's like incredibly sweet
1:28:38 and like very vulnerable actually and open and yeah,
1:28:40 it was really it was a pleasure.
1:28:46 That was a pleasant introduction.
1:28:51 Okay.
1:28:53 Yes.
1:28:54 A little hotter.
1:28:55 Still pleasant.
1:28:56 That's the format.
1:28:57 Not going for the milk yet.
1:28:59 Yeah.
1:29:00 Do you have any is this really happening
1:29:02 moments reflecting back on your experience doing live theater?
1:29:05 Like what's the most unforgivable thing someone can do
1:29:08 in the audience when they're watching a live stage performance?
1:29:11 the most inexplicable piece of two okay
1:29:14 two inexplicable pieces of audience behavior I once
1:29:16 had one was on Equis two girls who were on the onstage seating there's a scene
1:29:21 going on behind me with two other actors and two girls just start talking
1:29:23 to me as me and just being like Dan Dan look up here and I was
1:29:27 like no I can't like and so they I think they they weren't they weren't
1:29:30 kicked out but they moved them from the onstage
1:29:32 seating to the not onstage seating um
1:29:34 at the intermission um and my other favorite audience member was a guy that I
1:29:38 was doing a play in the UK um called Rosen Crans Gilden Stern from the dead.
1:29:42 He came in to the first act,
1:29:44 had like a foot long sandwich um wrapped in tin foil.
1:29:48 My friend had to make a massive speech
1:29:49 and he was like unwrapping this loud tinfoil sandwich.
1:29:52 Ate the entire sandwich for the rest of the first act
1:29:54 and then went to sleep and he's front front row by the way.
1:29:57 So we see all of this.
1:29:58 Um and he just went to sleep and we were like this[ __] guy like
1:30:01 what is what did he come to the end then came back in for the second
1:30:04 act completely attentive leapt up at the end
1:30:07 led the standing ovation we were like
1:30:09 wait you had a good time you were with it like it was yeah you
1:30:13 know some people are uh you weird and you never know like that's the thing
1:30:17 sometimes the people you see who look
1:30:19 stonefaced and having a horrible time that's just
1:30:21 how people take stuff in sometimes you see
1:30:22 them afterwards and they're like oh my god
1:30:23 we loved it so you're like okay
1:30:25 well maybe White hot mustard sauce from Quentin's.
1:30:34 Hell yeah.
1:30:38 Oh,
1:30:39 you like it?
1:30:39 This is very tasty.
1:30:40 Yeah,
1:30:41 I knew you would.
1:30:44 That's good.
1:30:45 That's like Yeah.
1:30:46 hot English mustard with more of a kick.
1:30:50 Great.
1:30:50 Well done, Quinton.
1:30:53 Is there a moment that you can identify as pivotal
1:30:55 in developing your own real perspective as an actor versus,
1:30:58 you know, being young and feeling like your job
1:31:00 was to hit your marks and say your lines?
1:31:02 Yeah, I still think that's my main job.
1:31:04 By the way, I think most actors really
1:31:05 underrate hitting your mark and saying your lines.
1:31:07 Um, but uh there was a thing that happened
1:31:10 towards the like during the end of Potter when
1:31:13 I was like a a older teenager where you're
1:31:16 just you're in the most self-conscious phase of your life.
1:31:18 and I hated my face and it doing anything.
1:31:23 And so I was like, "Okay, well,
1:31:24 if I just if I just kind of go stoic and don't really move my face,
1:31:28 then it can't do nothing can go wrong." Um,
1:31:31 and I think that came out of like real like self-consciousness and re
1:31:34 and and self-consciousness is the enemy of acting in any shape or form.
1:31:39 When I was doing my first musical on Broadway,
1:31:42 I learned very quickly that actually whatever natural weirdness I
1:31:46 have from my face or from expressiveness or my physicality,
1:31:49 you got to lean into it.
1:31:50 Whatever, you know, any weirdness there is to be lent into rather than avoided.
1:31:54 I feel like that's a big lesson through my life generally.
1:32:02 Got a bit of a tingle happening sort of just permanently now.
1:32:07 Yeah.
1:32:09 That's where I should have stopped.
1:32:12 We both We talked about it.
1:32:13 We'd had the moment.
1:32:13 I didn't need to take that extra bite.
1:32:15 That's a mistake.
1:32:19 Again, I think that's deceptive cuz I can like It's nice
1:32:23 and I could eat more, but I'm not going to.
1:32:25 You're right.
1:32:25 It's deceptive.
1:32:26 You know, it comes in with that peach up front,
1:32:28 so you feel like you're in the clear
1:32:30 and then it starts to sizzle here at the end.
1:32:33 And it's just it's amazing how long something can
1:32:36 carry on going after it's not in your mouth anymore.
1:32:40 Yeah.
1:32:40 So, you've played a character with horns on his head.
1:32:43 You've played a character with guns for hands.
1:32:45 And you've played a literal flatulent corpse.
1:32:49 Yeah.
1:32:48 For an actor, which of those was
1:32:50 most challenging from just a pure comfort perspective?
1:32:52 Oh, from a pure comfort perspective.
1:32:54 That's interesting.
1:32:55 Um, the most challenging one was probably horns on that.
1:32:59 Not because of the actual horns,
1:33:00 but generally the level of prosthetics I had on that movie was a lot.
1:33:05 There was a full body prosthetic by the end.
1:33:07 I hate prosthetics.
1:33:09 That's the only thing that I think could get me
1:33:11 to turn down a job of a script I like.
1:33:13 And Swiss Army man was the hardest one to figure out how to do the character.
1:33:18 It's such a singular kind of performance,
1:33:20 right?
1:33:20 Cuz it's not you're dead, but you're not a zombie.
1:33:22 And so you kind of go like, what what is that?
1:33:23 What does that look like?
1:33:24 And I really didn't know before I turned up for work.
1:33:27 And it was totally putting myself in the hands of the Daniels,
1:33:30 the directors, and like just asking them what they needed of me.
1:33:33 Well, great performance.
1:33:34 Thank you.
1:33:35 I love that movie.
1:33:36 I love
1:33:36 I'm taking your mind off the heat.
1:33:38 Great.
1:33:38 Yeah.
1:33:38 Yeah.
1:33:38 Thank you.
1:33:38 With a compliment.
1:33:39 That's very nice of you.
1:33:41 But the bad news is I'm going back in.
1:33:44 Tropical Amarillo.
1:33:45 The storm clears for just a second.
1:33:48 Feel like the word sweet is doing a lot of work there.
1:33:56 I'm going to not take another bite out.
1:33:57 That's the smart move.
1:33:59 Learning from the mistakes along the way.
1:34:02 Exactly.
1:34:02 Is it true that you spent nearly 42
1:34:04 hours filming underwater for the Gobblet of Fire?
1:34:07 And if so, do you remember your drowning
1:34:09 signal and did you have any close calls?
1:34:11 Um I only once uh didn't there was a time when we were training for it where
1:34:16 I um we were doing like mask clearing exercises
1:34:20 like very basic thing learning to dive and you
1:34:24 you brea you take a deep breath and you
1:34:26 take the regulator out and then you when you
1:34:28 put it back in you got to keep that breath cuz you go to blow the air out.
1:34:32 Um, and I remember I took the thing out once and I was like,
1:34:34 didn't breathe, didn't don't have any breath
1:34:37 to clear this when I get it back on.
1:34:38 And I put it back in.
1:34:40 And uh, yeah, I I I was like, like, go wishes, get me out of here.
1:34:46 That's my drowning signal.
1:34:47 Um, and they uh, and I got up and the stunt coordinator
1:34:49 looked at me and just in the way that only he could,
1:34:51 he's a lovely man called Greg Powell.
1:34:53 He just looked at me went, "Well,
1:34:54 you won't make that mistake again." And I was like,
1:34:56 "No, you're absolutely right." Um, but yeah, so we filmed for uh, 6 weeks.
1:35:01 We were I think we I've heard it quoted
1:35:03 that we averaged five seconds of usable footage per day.
1:35:07 That was one of the things that you go like,
1:35:09 "Yeah, I'll never never do something like this again."
1:35:12 All right, up next, homegrown hell.
1:35:15 Homegrown hell.
1:35:16 I mean, really, you're just you're you're trying to hurt people.
1:35:27 As soon as you swallow it, it lets you know that you've made a terrible mistake.
1:35:32 I am going to have another bite though.
1:35:33 Then I will too.
1:35:34 Okay.
1:35:34 Sorry.
1:35:35 Let's fart.
1:35:37 Okay, great.
1:35:38 I've heard you say that you base roles on originality above all else.
1:35:42 What stands out as like the most bizarre or unique pitch you've said yes to?
1:35:47 One of the worst ideas I've ever heard to during Potter,
1:35:52 somebody came to us, I think,
1:35:53 asked like they wanted to cast all three of us, me, Emma,
1:35:56 and Robert, as in a remake of Wizard of Oz, where Emma was Dorothy.
1:36:01 I can't remember what Ruper was.
1:36:03 And I I just remember that I was going to be the lion, but also he knew karate.
1:36:07 I was like a karate kicking cowardly lion.
1:36:10 And I remember leaving I was like 14 or 15.
1:36:13 And I was like, I don't know a lot about the world, but this is a bad idea.
1:36:17 This should not be made.
1:36:23 I really have a a bone to pick with this one's
1:36:26 name cuz Nana is just like that's a nice thing,
1:36:30 right?
1:36:30 But you know what?
1:36:31 You haven't tried the sauce yet.
1:36:32 That's true.
1:36:34 That is true.
1:36:35 Let's not judge a sauce by its label, as they say.
1:36:40 Oh, no.
1:36:41 Yeah, I do feel enlightened.
1:36:42 You're right.
1:36:46 Oh,[ __]
1:36:49 Yeah.
1:36:48 Second bite.
1:36:49 Huge mistake.
1:36:51 Many such cases.
1:36:53 Mhm.
1:36:55 Oh, yeah.
1:36:56 No.
1:36:56 Oh, yeah.
1:36:57 But you're in it, you know.
1:36:58 Yeah.
1:36:58 Yeah.
1:36:58 Yeah.
1:36:58 You're an actor.
1:36:59 You got to immerse yourself in the experience, you know.
1:37:03 Mhm.
1:37:03 This definitely falls into the category of this is a test
1:37:07 and but it is a test I enjoy when you're like
1:37:10 okay I want to see like I remember this one last
1:37:13 time I was like this is bad and it tastes bad.
1:37:16 Sorry manufacturers
1:37:18 it's all good.
1:37:19 This one has got like at the beginning it's
1:37:22 like this is a nice taste and I am now
1:37:24 at the point where I'm like it's it's really letting
1:37:25 me know that I'm in for a bad time layer.
1:37:27 I'm going for the milk.
1:37:28 This requires the milk.
1:37:30 It's that time.
1:37:32 Mhm.
1:37:32 So, watching the Harry Potter 20th anniversary retrospective a few years ago,
1:37:36 something that really stuck with me was the sheer number of classically trained
1:37:40 veteran actors who appeared in the eight films from Maggie Smith to Gary Oldman,
1:37:45 Al Don, that's just to name a few without overthinking about it.
1:37:49 What stands out as like the best acting you got to witness firsthand?
1:37:53 I mean, the thing that I always love actors
1:37:54 that make it look easy and all of those guys like,
1:37:57 you know, Gary or Michael Gam particularly.
1:37:59 Michael Gamin, mate, you know, obviously rest in peace.
1:38:02 I incredible man.
1:38:04 Um he would you can swear on the show, right?
1:38:08 He[ __] around all the time.
1:38:09 Like he would never stop like until the mo until action had been said.
1:38:13 Sometimes he would be like trying to make me laugh or do
1:38:15 I like actors who don't take it.
1:38:16 Some actors love to like dress the whole process up
1:38:19 in mystique and being an enigma and it's all like Michael
1:38:23 Gambin would you get to set and he'd be like what's
1:38:25 the shot and you'd be like oh it's cameras here Michael.
1:38:29 So you're there in front of it, but you're looking that way.
1:38:30 And he said, "Oh, what is this?
1:38:31 B O H N A R." I was like, "Sorry, what's that?" He said, "Back of head.
1:38:34 No acting required." Like, "Yes, yes it is." Um,
1:38:38 and when we were doing the sixth film,
1:38:41 me and him were like doing the final sequence and we were like in this boat.
1:38:44 I can't remember what the details, but like we're in this little boat going
1:38:47 over to this island surrounded by bad stuff.
1:38:50 And um and uh he'd be like, "What's this?" Uh TTAB.
1:38:55 I was like, "What?
1:38:55 Two[ __] in a boat?" Yes, Michael.
1:38:58 It is.
1:38:58 Um, so like he and I like Alda same thing where
1:39:02 like Alda was like not not[ __] around like Michael Gamble was,
1:39:05 but Alda would be chatting to everybody about
1:39:07 anything and could talk to anyone about anything.
1:39:09 And then when action gets said, she's like locked in and so good.
1:39:12 And yeah, I mean, it's just it's the people who can who can do the work without
1:39:17 making you constantly aware of how hard they're
1:39:19 working are always the people that seemed the coolest.
1:39:27 It's the bomb.
1:39:28 Hello again.
1:39:35 I'm taking that one bite and I'm walking away.
1:39:38 And this one, if you'll recall, is immediate.
1:39:40 You know, like the second you start to swallow is when it tries to
1:39:46 Yeah.
1:39:46 Wow.
1:39:47 You can really track that one where it is in your body.
1:39:50 Like it's about there now.
1:39:52 Yeah.
1:39:52 Yeah.
1:39:52 Yeah.
1:39:52 It is the whole way down your digestive system,
1:39:56 if you recall.
1:39:57 Oh, wow.
1:39:57 Can you break down step by step how to make a fool's gold sandwich?
1:40:03 Ooh, I literally had a speech about this, didn't I?
1:40:06 You take one entire loaf, cut it in half, hollow out both sides,
1:40:13 layer one half with an entire jar of peanut butter
1:40:16 and the other half with an entire jar of jam.
1:40:19 And then you stuff it with a pound of crispy bacon.
1:40:23 It's really delicious.
1:40:24 I mean, Elvis liked them for a reason,
1:40:25 you know, and he didn't he didn't die hungry.
1:40:29 This is really sticking with me.
1:40:30 This is just like Yeah.
1:40:31 Never leave my lips.
1:40:33 Wow.
1:40:33 But I have to say,
1:40:35 you're very eloquent in the answers, you know,
1:40:38 no matter what you're going through, still very eloquent in the answers.
1:40:43 Thank you very much.
1:40:44 I know what you're fighting against.
1:40:45 The walls are closing in over here a little bit.
1:40:49 When you get a second to think about it, a second to breathe, the pain it hits.
1:40:55 Yeah.
1:40:54 But then when the adrenaline spike of action hits, right,
1:40:58 I'm ready.
1:40:59 Yeah, exactly.
1:41:00 Yeah.
1:41:00 Not touching that one again.
1:41:02 Well, why do you do this, guys?
1:41:03 Why do you have a nuclear bomb on your bottle?
1:41:06 I think we just experience.
1:41:08 Yeah.
1:41:08 Yeah.
1:41:08 Yeah.
1:41:08 Absolutely.
1:41:10 Wow.
1:41:10 Just doesn't go anywhere.
1:41:11 It just stays at that level.
1:41:12 And these two are worse.
1:41:19 We're here, aren't we?
1:41:22 So, this one, smoked Serrano Squash Reaper X.
1:41:26 Okay.
1:41:33 Butterfly Bakery of Vermont.
1:41:35 This made by a bakery
1:41:37 in Vermont of all places.
1:41:38 You know,
1:41:38 you guys supposed to be chill.
1:41:41 There's a lot of contradictions in this sauce,
1:41:45 but I will say after the last one,
1:41:47 it's kind of impossible to know which one's which.
1:41:49 At this point, I don't know what this bad effect is from.
1:41:51 This could be latent.
1:41:54 Yeah.
1:41:54 I think I prefer the taste of that one though to the bomb.
1:41:56 The bomb just like the bomb exists to[ __] you up.
1:41:58 There's no Yeah, you've learned our secrets.
1:42:02 So, you seem like someone who's really in love
1:42:04 with the whole process of making a film,
1:42:06 not just the lights, camera, and action of it all.
1:42:08 Is there a role on a film set that maybe flies under
1:42:11 the radar but you think is disproportionately important to the final product?
1:42:15 Like what's the most underrated role?
1:42:17 Nobody knows the nobody knows the assistant director's department exists.
1:42:20 No, nobody like ads we refer to ads
1:42:24 and they are what they run everything and I feel
1:42:26 like there is some like if you see
1:42:28 a movie about movies often the director is shouting action.
1:42:31 Generally speaking on set they don't.
1:42:32 It's the first AD shouts action.
1:42:33 The second AD does the schedule.
1:42:35 The third AD or the second is like running
1:42:38 the set trying to make sure that the actors haven't
1:42:40 wandered off somewhere or like you know it's the AD
1:42:43 department is is the lifeblood of any film set.
1:42:47 Focus puller for anyone who doesn't know
1:42:49 like as the actor's distance to or whatever
1:42:52 your the focus of the scene is changes in in relation to where the camera is,
1:42:56 focus pullers are having to make tiny
1:42:57 adjustments to make sure you stay in focus.
1:42:59 I I think it's probably gotten marginally easier since we're
1:43:03 not dealing with fil with since things are digital now,
1:43:06 but I it's still like a job that and then you
1:43:09 know if you're doing a really hard thing and they're like
1:43:11 oh it was great sorry there was a tiny buzz though
1:43:13 everyone's like oh you ruined like an actor can forget a line
1:43:16 a thousand times everyone's like it's okay you're doing something so
1:43:20 difficult and then and a focus puller will like screw up one
1:43:22 time and everyone's like what are you doing it's yeah so there's
1:43:25 a huge um imbalance in in in those onesh All right, D.
1:43:29 All right, here we go, man.
1:43:31 Oh, wait.
1:43:31 What are you doing?
1:43:33 Do I have to do this?
1:43:34 I mean, if you're doing it, I'm going to do it.
1:43:41 It's one of my pet my pet peeves
1:43:42 about being on set is like actors getting annoyed.
1:43:45 Like, if the boom comes into frame for a second,
1:43:47 like actors being annoyed with technical mistakes from the crew
1:43:50 when no one's allowed to[ __] up as much as actors.
1:43:53 Yeah.
1:43:53 Wait, are they just put a little bit to the side?
1:43:57 Okay.
1:43:57 Yeah.
1:43:58 And then that way you can dip it and just
1:43:59 have a little more control because it can avalanche on you.
1:44:02 All right.
1:44:03 It's a big one as well.
1:44:04 All right.
1:44:05 Good.
1:44:05 All right.
1:44:07 Cheers.
1:44:07 Cheers.
1:44:07 Thank you for this.
1:44:08 What a run.
1:44:10 Mhm.
1:44:13 And with that Oh,[ __]
1:44:18 Yeah.
1:44:19 It's fine.
1:44:19 Then it gets to the back of your mouth.
1:44:20 You're like, "Oh, no." The wings of death are behind us.
1:44:24 And to close things out, you know, last time you were on the show,
1:44:28 and this is hard to believe, but that fateful day more than 5 years ago,
1:44:31 we were in season 13 with the season 13 lineup,
1:44:35 and you close things out by ranking the sauces from the ones
1:44:38 you like the most to the ones you like the least.
1:44:40 Here we are in season 29 with a whole new lineup.
1:44:44 I'm wondering if we can run it back.
1:44:46 Can you rearrange the lineup from your favorite sauces to your least favorite?
1:44:51 Okay, this is definitely favorite.
1:44:55 Um, just just reverse the order entirely.
1:45:02 Um, actually, you know,
1:45:03 I did I have I did the Nirvana
1:45:05 and the these ones in terms of like one that's hot, but Nirvana surprised you.
1:45:10 Nana surprised me.
1:45:11 I actually like ended up enjoying it.
1:45:12 I think more the type of heat than the actual taste,
1:45:16 but it was like a a heat that was both challenging but fun.
1:45:22 Um, and I'm I swipe these two and these two.
1:45:27 There you go.
1:45:29 Sorry, the bomb.
1:45:30 You exist for a reason, but it's not a fun reason.
1:45:33 Once again in last place.
1:45:36 And look at you, Daniel Radcliffe taking on the wings of death,
1:45:40 living to tell the tale.
1:45:42 Now for a second time,
1:45:43 and I am very much looking forward to that text followup in a couple hours.
1:45:48 Now there's nothing left to do but roll out the red carpet for you.
1:45:50 this camera, this camera, or this camera.
1:45:52 Let the people know what you have going on in your life.
1:45:54 So, um, uh, The Fallen Rise of Reggie Dinkens comes out on February 23rd.
1:45:59 Yes, I got it right.
1:46:00 I've been asking all day.
1:46:01 Comes out on February 23rd at 8:00 p.m.
1:46:03 on NBC.
1:46:04 Two episodes back toback, available the next day on Peacock.
1:46:07 And also, I'm doing a play at the Hudson Theater called Every Brilliant Thing.
1:46:12 Hopefully, it will be like unlike any other play you've kind of seen.
1:46:15 GO SEE IT.
1:46:19 THANK YOU VERY MUCH, DUDE.
1:46:25 Thank you, mate.
1:46:26 That was really fun.
1:46:27 You can kind if you're asking me the questions that I always get asked,
1:46:30 then I can kind of answer them on autopilot,
1:46:33 whereas like having to actually stop and think while you're doing that
1:46:36 makes for something more interesting.
1:46:39 Lasers coming out of my ass.
1:46:43 You should have asked me all the cute questions up top.
1:46:46 You know what I'm saying?
1:46:47 You start acting the deep ones as we get deeper into these wings is insane.
1:46:55 Hey, what's going on everybody for First Week East.
1:46:56 I'm Sean Evans and you're watching Hot Ones.
1:46:58 It's the show with hot questions and even hotter wings.
1:47:01 And today we're joined by Tiana Taylor.
1:47:02 She's fresh off a Golden Globe Award win and Oscar nomination for best
1:47:05 supporting actress for her performance in the film One Battle After Another.
1:47:08 Also a Grammy Award nominated musician as well.
1:47:11 Her latest album is called Escape Room.
1:47:12 But you know what?
1:47:13 You can't run away from the wings of death today.
1:47:15 Tiana Taylor, welcome to the show.
1:47:17 Cannot escape the wings today.
1:47:19 What's going on?
1:47:21 How are you around spicy food before we get started?
1:47:23 I'm a spicy food girl.
1:47:24 I love spicy food.
1:47:26 Like everything I see or all my food that I cook,
1:47:29 if you going to eat in my house, it's going to be spicy for sure.
1:47:55 I just don't know what you planted in these wings.
1:47:57 So, I'm like cautious.
1:47:59 You know, alert.
1:48:02 Mhm.
1:48:02 Very alert.
1:48:03 Head on a swivel.
1:48:04 Yeah.
1:48:04 I can't trust you right now.
1:48:05 You know what I'm saying?
1:48:06 I get it.
1:48:07 This is like we're literally trapped in an escape
1:48:09 room and there's only one way out
1:48:12 through.
1:48:11 No, it's either one of us got to go.
1:48:13 You know what I'm saying?
1:48:13 It's like, you ever see those movies where it's like
1:48:15 two enter, one leaves.
1:48:17 That's what's going on today.
1:48:18 Only one can go.
1:48:18 Y'all figure out who going who who going to be the one.
1:48:20 It's giving soul, you know.
1:48:22 So So this first one is Garlic Delight.
1:48:25 And you'll start over to your right.
1:48:36 I'm not coming in here being cocky because the ones
1:48:40 that be coming here talking[ __] the main ones croaking.
1:48:45 You recognize that pattern.
1:48:46 I've seen that pattern many times before.
1:48:48 Very smart.
1:48:50 So, across your many projects,
1:48:51 it's kind of mind-blowing how many luminaries across
1:48:54 different disciplines you've turned into advocates and collaborators.
1:48:57 you know, from Dion Warwick to Lauren Hill,
1:49:00 from Matt Damon to Leonardo DiCaprio.
1:49:03 What's your approach to balancing being a student of the greats
1:49:06 while simultaneously having the confidence
1:49:08 to go toe-to-toe with them creatively?
1:49:11 Ooh, I think I think that's the whole point,
1:49:14 you know, me wanting to make them proud, you know,
1:49:17 to go from being home and watching them to actually looking
1:49:21 to the side and watching them be beside me is um insane.
1:49:24 And because I don't take that for granted,
1:49:26 my goal is like there's no turning back.
1:49:28 Like you see how neither one of us could escape this room right now.
1:49:31 We can't I can't escape the set.
1:49:33 So I'm always just locked in.
1:49:35 And even if I am nervous, I just I got to shake it off.
1:49:37 The moment they yell action is just is up.
1:49:40 I can see it today.
1:49:41 You know, you're showing no signs of trepidation.
1:49:44 You know, you're cautious.
1:49:46 Mhm.
1:49:46 But you're confident.
1:49:47 Yes.
1:49:47 Careful.
1:49:48 And on that and on that note, are you ready to move on here to wig number two?
1:49:54 Is this Sriracha?
1:49:55 This is It's a pickled garlic Sriracha here.
1:49:58 Oo, pickled garlic.
1:49:59 Okay.
1:50:11 All just peep.
1:50:12 You got me all flats.
1:50:14 I'm a flats kind of girl.
1:50:15 We pay attention to the rider over here.
1:50:17 All right.
1:50:17 We take a lot of pride in that.
1:50:19 You know, it's very just giving detail oriented.
1:50:21 I like this show already.
1:50:23 I like it here.
1:50:25 So, last summer you enrolled in the Essafier School for Culinary Arts,
1:50:28 pursuing a degree in both pastry and culinary.
1:50:31 What has so far been the most challenging dish or technique to master?
1:50:35 Have you tried your hand at the perfect burblanc yet?
1:50:39 No, but fabricating protein is like so hard, but I ain't going to front.
1:50:49 It's so good.
1:50:49 It turned out the process.
1:50:51 So good.
1:50:51 It was worth the process.
1:50:53 When you close your eyes and picture
1:50:55 in your mind your dream Tiana Taylor restaurant,
1:50:58 what's the picture look like?
1:50:59 Can you paint it for us?
1:51:03 Got to be something cool.
1:51:03 I want to bring the skates back.
1:51:05 You know, I need them to bring the skates back.
1:51:08 Maybe a little and maybe the seats look like you're in a drive-in.
1:51:13 Like maybe the seats is given 50s era.
1:51:15 Yeah, but I see the vision.
1:51:17 And I think I want tie-dye chef jackets like or leather.
1:51:20 I'm I'm very extra.
1:51:22 So it's going to be something cute.
1:51:24 I know that.
1:51:25 Maybe like patchworth or like you know it's going to be something cute.
1:51:28 You know how it's just the logo right there?
1:51:29 Like I know I need the logo right here.
1:51:30 I need a big logo in the back.
1:51:31 Like the merch will go hard.
1:51:33 You already know I'm killing the merch.
1:51:34 I got merch everywhere.
1:51:41 I season my chicken and mustard.
1:51:44 You got to put that much once you once you season it,
1:51:47 you got to marinate that thing in uh mustard.
1:51:49 Getting lots of chicken tips already, you know,
1:51:51 and we can use those over here at the show.
1:51:53 Don't burn no chicken, you know.
1:51:55 I don't play my fried chicken.
1:51:59 Mhm.
1:51:59 So, in your documentary, Assembly Required,
1:52:02 there's this scene where you're struggling through a pre-show sprained ankle.
1:52:06 You have problems with the lighting and it made
1:52:08 me wonder when you think about all your live shows,
1:52:10 all the times that you've had to take stage
1:52:12 in a show where everything that could go wrong did,
1:52:15 is there one that immediately comes to mind?
1:52:18 I mean, that's all of them.
1:52:19 It's always so chaotic backstage.
1:52:21 I mean, dancer done lost a bra.
1:52:23 This person can't find a pinky toe.
1:52:24 It just it's it's just always so much going on.
1:52:27 So, what I try and do is be like, "Okay, like if it didn't go as planned,
1:52:31 it still worked out." Like one time my my wig slipped back or whatever and I w
1:52:35 up pulling it off and like you know I
1:52:38 swinging in a circle and the crowd went crazy.
1:52:40 So it's just like yeah I didn't go it wasn't it didn't go as planned.
1:52:43 I didn't plan for my wig to fly off
1:52:45 but I made it a moment and it became even bigger.
1:52:48 I can think quick on quick on my feet and you know you embrace the chaos.
1:52:53 Absolutely.
1:52:53 I'm like organized chaos and you're embracing it so far in this show.
1:52:58 Three wings down doing great.
1:53:00 Are you ready to move on here to wing number four?
1:53:03 This one with the lizard.
1:53:04 This is the one with the lizard.
1:53:05 So, we call this one a smoked habanero.
1:53:07 This is about This about to be some hot[ __] happening.
1:53:09 I I could tell by the lizard.
1:53:11 All right.
1:53:16 You know, I would be greedy.
1:53:20 I take a bigger bite.
1:53:26 It's real good.
1:53:28 What stands out as the most heated
1:53:30 dance battle that you've ever participated in firsthand?
1:53:32 Like, how closely does art imitate life when
1:53:35 you're in a movie like Stomp the Yard?
1:53:37 I think my most intense battle was in like third grade.
1:53:41 And you still remember it?
1:53:42 It wasn't like, oh, I never forgot that day.
1:53:45 It was on It was recess, too.
1:53:47 We ain't have no music.
1:53:48 You know what I'm saying?
1:53:49 And I just I I remember we just got it we got it popping.
1:53:52 They had to like I don't even know what was playing.
1:53:56 Two entered, only one left.
1:53:58 You feel me?
1:53:58 Yeah.
1:53:59 Yeah.
1:53:59 We're on theme today.
1:54:00 It felt like today.
1:54:02 You know what I'm saying?
1:54:02 It felt like today.
1:54:08 Oh, smell good, too.
1:54:09 It got curry in it.
1:54:12 I feel like I'm getting greedy about the wing,
1:54:14 and I don't like that cuz that's not smart.
1:54:17 You know what I'm saying?
1:54:17 Like, you're violating your rule about being cautious.
1:54:21 Yeah.
1:54:21 Yeah.
1:54:21 Yeah.
1:54:22 But
1:54:22 I love anything with curry in it.
1:54:24 This This got to have some type of curry in it.
1:54:27 Yeah.
1:54:27 It has that powder to it that you're catching.
1:54:29 Yeah.
1:54:31 Mhm.
1:54:30 What's the most essential ingredient for a proper
1:54:33 summertime Harlem block party in your experience?
1:54:36 Good music.
1:54:37 You know what's crazy?
1:54:38 I never understood the importance of like DJs when I was younger.
1:54:41 I was like, "He talks too much.
1:54:43 Play the song." But I realized that you have some
1:54:46 DJs that do talk over the whole song and it's horrible.
1:54:49 But then you have DJs that know, you know, like
1:54:52 that have a spiritual connection to the vibe.
1:54:54 You feel me?
1:54:54 And they know, and you got a $100 bill,
1:54:56 put your hand what, you know what I'm saying?
1:54:58 It just they they blend with the music, you know what I'm saying?
1:55:02 Um, and I love a call and response.
1:55:04 I just love when people know what they're doing.
1:55:06 So to have a good party for me, you you got to be a good DJ.
1:55:10 Do you have a number one tip when it
1:55:11 comes to mastering the jump roping art of double dutch?
1:55:14 You don't know how to double Dutch if you ain't holding the chest.
1:55:16 You got you got to hold you got to go like this even if you don't need to.
1:55:19 It's just something about this that just like it's good luck.
1:55:21 You know what I'm saying?
1:55:22 And you got to kind of like you got to like
1:55:26 fumble a little bit like you got to act jump in.
1:55:28 You like no hold on.
1:55:29 Wait, slow down or speed up.
1:55:31 Hold on.
1:55:31 You hit the jump.
1:55:38 You know what I'm saying?
1:55:40 I know exactly what you're saying.
1:55:41 You know what I'm saying?
1:55:42 It's it's an art.
1:55:43 And then, do you have a go-to order at Amy Roots on 116th Street?
1:55:47 Oo, Amy Roots.
1:55:48 Yes, I love cornbread and I love when they give me extra butter,
1:55:51 but I don't want the butter melted, but I don't want the butter cold neither.
1:55:53 It got to be just enough to like how you see it in the commercial
1:55:56 when you smear it on and then it start to melt on there.
1:55:58 Don't send me no melted butter.
1:56:00 Send it.
1:56:00 I need it soft enough to melt on top.
1:56:06 So, you got the cornbread.
1:56:09 Mhm.
1:56:08 Then you got the fried chicken crispy.
1:56:11 Then you got collard greens, a little bit of hot sauce on that.
1:56:16 Mhm.
1:56:15 Baked macaroni and cheese, maybe a little bit of yam.
1:56:19 There you have it.
1:56:21 Delicious.
1:56:22 Mhm.
1:56:26 This smell like it's about to be some[ __] that's about to go down.
1:56:35 And this one to me is kind of sneaky.
1:56:36 Like kind of like one of those false first impression sauces.
1:56:42 Groovy.
1:56:42 still dancing on it.
1:56:45 Dancing, dancing, dancing.
1:56:47 You are dancing on it.
1:56:51 So, you gave an interesting quote talking
1:56:54 to press backstage at the Globes where you said,
1:56:56 "Honestly, if everything would have happened my way on my time,
1:56:59 I don't even know if I would be standing
1:57:00 up here." Do you think patience is underrated in Hollywood?
1:57:05 I just learned that there's always something bigger in store for you.
1:57:08 So even when you when you get that no,
1:57:10 understanding that that no is is is also a win.
1:57:14 And I think that patience is a part of knowing what's for you and what's not,
1:57:18 you know, and when it's your time and when it's not.
1:57:20 But also have a I have a sports mentality, you know, I'm going to wait my turn.
1:57:26 I'm going to clap from the bench or on the court, you know,
1:57:29 whether I'm sixman or defensive player in the corner or, you know,
1:57:32 like it it doesn't matter.
1:57:34 I know how to wait and understand um my position,
1:57:38 especially with a movie because now I'm looking at PTA and I'm like,
1:57:41 "Listen, you're our quarterback." You know what I'm saying?
1:57:43 So,
1:57:44 let him cook.
1:57:45 I show up in my jersey and I'm I'm I'm ready to have a good game.
1:57:50 And you know what?
1:57:50 Sure hands so far.
1:57:51 All right.
1:57:52 These wings have not been too hot to handle.
1:57:54 But if you're ready, we can move on to sauce number seven.
1:57:59 This one's called Nirvana.
1:58:03 Oh, almost there's a Havana, right?
1:58:13 Okay.
1:58:23 Mhm.
1:58:24 Mhm.
1:58:23 It's starting.
1:58:25 I'm okay if you're okay.
1:58:27 All right, then we're okay.
1:58:30 Since we're a team Mhm.
1:58:31 You want to take a sip of water together?
1:58:33 Yeah, let's do that.
1:58:33 Let's do that.
1:58:39 I've heard you say of your early life, I was always in go mode.
1:58:42 I'm from Harlem.
1:58:43 I'm a hustler.
1:58:43 I'm a grinder.
1:58:44 Looking back, what do you see as like your boldest shoot your shot moment?
1:58:48 Like, has there ever been a time where
1:58:50 you've surprised yourself with your own instinct to hustle?
1:58:53 Yeah.
1:58:54 I didn't know how many things I was like collecting until now.
1:58:58 I'm like, you know, like even signing up
1:59:00 for culinary school like I really surprised myself,[ __]
1:59:11 You know what else surprised me?
1:59:12 What else surprised you?
1:59:15 Going to Nana.
1:59:17 You know what?
1:59:17 I noticed that this was the first one that you didn't smell test
1:59:21 cuz we was in like deep conversation, right?
1:59:24 Lost it.
1:59:25 Lost it.
1:59:25 Yeah.
1:59:25 Yeah.
1:59:26 Yeah.
1:59:26 I took my eye off the ball.
1:59:27 All right.
1:59:27 I took my eye off the ball.
1:59:29 I'm going to earn it back.
1:59:30 I'm going to earn it back along the way, __]
1:59:41 Baby, I need you to stop asking me questions right now.
1:59:43 Let's take a beat.
1:59:46 You ready?
1:59:46 I'm ready.
1:59:56 Okay, man.
1:59:58 Have my tongue involved in this one after, right?
2:00:01 Come on, team.
2:00:01 We got two more to go,[ __] We got two more to go, man.
2:00:04 That's the athlete mindset right there.
2:00:06 Just two more reps.
2:00:08 Just two more reps.
2:00:10 Mhm.
2:00:10 We're almost to the finish line.
2:00:11 Almost to the finish line.
2:00:13 What makes R&B music the realest[ __] in the world?
2:00:16 Can you unpackage that quote from Billboard in an interview from 2020?
2:00:21 I said that right.
2:00:38 There we go.
2:00:39 That's the one right there.
2:00:40 I found the whole[ __] Straight from the jug.
2:00:42 Straight from the jug.
2:00:42 It's different.
2:00:45 Uhhuh.
2:00:45 M
2:00:47 no stone is left unturned in R&B.
2:00:51 You know, you get to be your most vulnerable.
2:00:54 What you doing?
2:00:56 Just trying to survive.
2:00:58 You know, you chewing ice.
2:00:59 Yeah.
2:01:00 Yeah.
2:01:00 A little bit.
2:01:00 Why you tell me?
2:01:04 Oh, bro.
2:01:04 You help us over here.
2:01:07 Yeah.
2:01:08 You praying on my downfall?
2:01:10 No, never.
2:01:10 I'm No, I'm praying that we make it to the top of this mountain.
2:01:14 All right.
2:01:14 And then we get a beautiful view from the summit.
2:01:17 That's always my goal going through this.
2:01:19 I never want to take anybody out.
2:01:21 I never pray on anyone's downfall.
2:01:22 Never.
2:01:23 You should ask me all the cute questions up top.
2:01:26 You know what I'm saying?
2:01:27 You start asking the deep ones as we get deeper into these wings.
2:01:29 It's insane.
2:01:30 Make it look like I got an answer.
2:01:32 You see, I had all the answers in the world earlier.
2:01:33 I was spin bars.
2:01:34 Now it's just getting a little
2:01:36 getting a little crazy.
2:01:37 All right.
2:01:37 I I'll try to come up with a cute one.
2:01:39 All right.
2:01:40 For this next one, it's too late.
2:01:42 It's too late.
2:01:42 I said the cute ones used to go up top.
2:01:48 Okay.
2:01:52 Mama say,
2:02:02 "What makes Pretty Woman the perfect film in your opinion?
2:02:05 Like why does that film resonate so strongly with you?"
2:02:07 Oh my god, I love Pretty Woman.
2:02:10 That instantly just made the burn go away.
2:02:13 I to I'm trying over.
2:02:14 See?
2:02:14 Oh my god.
2:02:15 I'm trying to reciprocate.
2:02:16 That was so cute.
2:02:17 You redeemed yourself.
2:02:20 Pretty Woman.
2:02:21 It's just so special.
2:02:21 I one I love romcoms, you know,
2:02:23 and I I love I love the idea of of fairy tales as well.
2:02:27 And I just love Julia Roberts is like
2:02:29 my favorite person in the whole wide world.
2:02:31 It was just my favorite.
2:02:32 I had the biggest crush on Richard Garrett.
2:02:39 Say Pretty Woman again.
2:02:40 Pretty Woman.
2:02:43 Um, yeah.
2:02:44 You know, it's just it's it's it's so good and it's one of my favorite
2:02:47 films and I just I love what it talks about and I just love Julia.
2:02:52 Like she just is bright.
2:02:53 Everything she does is it just always feels so bright and I just love it.
2:02:57 I'm a romcom girl.
2:02:59 All right, Tiana.
2:03:05 I'll be looking like a punk if I don't do that.
2:03:09 What a[ __] run.
2:03:10 What a[ __] run.
2:03:12 How much you dipped in there?
2:03:16 No.
2:03:16 Dip dip it some more.
2:03:17 Okay.
2:03:17 Dip it in some.
2:03:17 I got you.
2:03:19 Is that good enough?
2:03:20 I want you to eat that part where you dipped it.
2:03:22 Yeah.
2:03:22 Yeah.
2:03:22 Yeah.
2:03:22 Of course.
2:03:31 And with that, the wings of death are behind us.
2:03:34 And as we've learned today, there's someone who wears many hats.
2:03:38 a multi-hyphenate, including aspiring pastry chef.
2:03:42 If you could put together the ultimate
2:03:44 antidote dessert to combat the wings of death,
2:03:48 what would you whip up in the kitchen?
2:03:49 Like, can you describe it step by step?
2:03:52 I would I would have to bake a cake.
2:03:57 I have to bake a cake.
2:03:59 Strawberry strawberry cake with a whole lot of icing
2:04:04 and a big ass scoop of ice cream.
2:04:06 between that and Pretty Woman.
2:04:08 You know, Pretty Woman got me through one of these rounds.
2:04:12 Yeah.
2:04:12 You know what I'm saying?
2:04:14 Mhm.
2:04:14 And now I want some cake.
2:04:16 I actually want to go and dabble back into the What was that curry one?
2:04:20 Back into the tropical amaro.
2:04:23 We don't have any cake, but we do have some ice cream.
2:04:26 Tiana Taylor, here comes a bowl.
2:04:28 We've earned it.
2:04:29 And look at you taking on the wings of death, living to tell the tale.
2:04:33 And now there's nothing left to do but roll out the red carpet for you.
2:04:36 this camera, this camera, or this camera.
2:04:38 Let the people know what you have going on in your life.
2:04:41 My current status is that I am dying.
2:04:45 And then after that, from my casket,
2:04:48 I will be releasing my Air Jordan 3es March 7th.
2:04:55 And then when I rise from the dead,
2:04:57 I want you to go and watch one battle after another on HBO Max or I'll hunt you.
2:05:03 Um, and yeah, I'm dying.
2:05:19 Oh, that about another shirt.
2:05:21 Oh, sick.
2:05:22 Mhm.
2:05:22 I told you I'll make Thank you so much.
2:05:24 I know you do merch.
2:05:26 I know you do merch.
2:05:29 I got some Tiana Taylor merch.
2:05:31 Yeah.
2:05:31 I knew what you said.
2:05:33 But yeah, they can't take that away from you.
2:05:36 Some sneakers, too.
2:05:36 You will some sneakers.
2:05:37 Yeah, I got you.
2:05:37 You got to tell me your size.
2:05:38 Yeah, you're the best.
2:05:40 And I got you.
2:05:41 You know what I'm saying?
2:05:42 You try to take me out cuz we're a team.
2:05:44 I wouldn't go that far.
2:05:47 Okay.
2:05:46 You chomping on ice without me.
2:05:48 You still can't be trusted.
2:05:50 I don't even know what's going to happen when I get in the car back home.
2:05:53 Little bit of hot sauce.
2:05:59 Sure.
2:05:59 I'm not.
2:06:00 But this isn't for clout.
2:06:01 This isn't for like, oh, he's so funny.
2:06:03 I'm in pain.
2:06:09 Hey, what's going on everybody?
2:06:10 For first week feast, I'm Sean Evans and you're watching Hot Ones.
2:06:12 It's the show with hot questions and even hotter wings.
2:06:15 And today we're joined by Charlie Puth.
2:06:16 He's a four-time Grammy Award nominated singer, songwriter, and producer.
2:06:20 His latest album is called Whatever's Clever,
2:06:22 and it's scheduled to release on March 27th.
2:06:24 Check out the singles Changes and Beat Yourself Up out
2:06:26 now as well as the Whatever's Clever world tour to follow.
2:06:29 But in the meantime, it's a goround with the Wings of Death.
2:06:32 Charlie Puth, welcome to the show.
2:06:33 Thank you for having me.
2:06:34 I'm a little I haven't been this nervous since the Super Bowl,
2:06:37 if I'm going to be completely honest.
2:06:39 Are you not much of a spicy food guy?
2:06:42 No, I I I actually haven't had spice in probably a couple years.
2:07:10 The smell itself kind of smells spicy.
2:07:14 This one here or Yep, that's the one.
2:07:16 This one.
2:07:16 Okay.
2:07:17 Ready?
2:07:20 M.
2:07:23 Wait, hold on.
2:07:24 That's not that bad.
2:07:30 That's actually good.
2:07:32 So, from Jeff Goldblum, it's hot.
2:07:37 I think I'm going to be good.
2:07:39 So, from Jeff Goldblum to Atatada, even a saxophone solo from Kenny G,
2:07:43 the features on your new album absolutely rule.
2:07:46 Thank you.
2:07:46 Can you talk me through the origin story of a song like Love and Exile
2:07:49 and specifically what it was like to record
2:07:52 alongside yacht rock legends Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins?
2:07:56 We just got together had a couple of mochas and just uh Kenny was like,
2:08:00 "Okay, the song is called Love in Exile." I'm like, "That sounds like a book.
2:08:04 That sounds like a novel." But uh I was playing some I'll never forget this.
2:08:07 I was playing something and then he whispered in my ear quite loudly,
2:08:11 "I think you should let Mike play the keyboard." I'm like,
2:08:15 "Say less." Michael McDonald walked over to my Road 73 and just played.
2:08:24 I'm like, "Ooh, a shuffle." It hurts.
2:08:32 You'll hear it, but uh it's kind of like a modern-day yacht rock anthem.
2:08:36 How would you describe yacht rock?
2:08:38 Like, are there qualities that make a song peak yacht?
2:08:42 I think what makes a song peak yacht is the jazzy uh chord structure.
2:08:48 Um you listen to ambrosia, it's not just a regular um F chord.
2:08:52 It's like a F suspended chord,
2:08:54 which is just a fancy word for a little bit more notes in the actual chord.
2:08:59 Um, if a triad C E G looks like this, a yacht rock chord would be C D E G
2:09:06 B D F sharp with uh so it's just more
2:09:09 colors in the chord structure and a lot of dry drums.
2:09:14 Like you listen to a record by uh Steely Dan called Asia.
2:09:18 It's some of the best production ever because they kept the drums dry.
2:09:20 They like kind of hit you in the face.
2:09:22 And I think it might have been one of the origins for hip-hop and like
2:09:25 you know early New York uh bass hip hop where the drums are like
2:09:28 really just in your face early LL Cool J Mama Said Knock You Out like
2:09:32 those drums are all just like in your face and everything behind it is wet.
2:09:35 I think that's what uh Yacht Rock is as well.
2:09:42 Does it have an exciting flavor like garlic in it?
2:09:45 It does have garlic in it.
2:09:46 This is a pickled garlic Sriracha in fact.
2:09:48 Okay, talk to me.
2:09:50 I'm going to go this end.
2:09:54 M wait, I'm like really confident all the time.
2:10:00 This is not bad at all.
2:10:02 So, I understand that in college you do weekly hustle days,
2:10:05 which was bringing your music on the train with you
2:10:08 and then sitting outside record executives doors for hours on end.
2:10:12 What stands out as like your best or most productive hustle day?
2:10:15 And is there another one that stands out in your memory
2:10:17 for being the harshest feedback or door slammed in your face?
2:10:20 Ooh.
2:10:21 I think the most successful hustle day was when I
2:10:23 successfully got into the Universal Music Publishing building on Broadway
2:10:28 and successfully finagled my way into a session um with some
2:10:34 up and cominging songwriters when I had nothing to my name.
2:10:37 I was just making beats at my parents house in New Jersey.
2:10:40 The harshest advice was from Cara Daguardi when
2:10:43 she told me that my lyrics weren't any good.
2:10:45 And I did not take uh 20-year-old me did not take that very well,
2:10:49 but it ended up being the best advice I could ever get
2:10:52 because uh it introduced me to the idea of collaboration in music.
2:10:56 Um and all my best songs in my opinion have been made uh through collaboration.
2:11:00 Attention written with Jay Cash and uh See You Again written
2:11:04 with uh like it's it's different brains make a great song.
2:11:11 I hear my sister laughing in the background
2:11:13 cuz she knows what's about to happen.
2:11:16 All right.
2:11:21 M.
2:11:24 Holy moly.
2:11:25 Wait a minute.
2:11:27 Maybe you're a hot sauce guy all along.
2:11:29 Charlie, do we ever
2:11:31 M I'm feeling pretty good right now.
2:11:33 And you should.
2:11:34 Oh, wait.
2:11:36 Okay.
2:11:37 No, it's just it's just like a little a tickle.
2:11:40 Mhm.
2:11:40 Yeah.
2:11:40 Nothing you can't handle, though.
2:11:43 Yeah.
2:11:43 So, I've heard you say that your goal with any hook
2:11:45 is to find the balance between too boring and too annoying.
2:11:50 Mhm.
2:11:49 Can you talk me through what that tightroppe walk is like for a songwriter?
2:11:53 I think what a a song that will resonate with people
2:12:00 the most is a song that has little bits of repetition.
2:12:04 M my Chirona I want to dance dance dance dance dance
0:00 dance dance dance dance dance dance dance dance dance dance dance
2:12:07 dance dance dance dance dance dance dance dance dance dance dance
0:00 dance dance dance dance dance dance dance dance dance dance dance dance
2:12:07 dance dance dance dance dance dance dance dance dance dance dance
0:00 dance dance dance dance dance dance dance dance dance dance dance dance
2:12:07 dance dance dance dance dance dance dance dance dance dance dance
2:12:08 dance dance dance dance dance dance dance dance I came to dance
2:12:08 dance dance dance dance dance dance dance dance dance dance dance
0:00 dance dance dance dance dance dance dance dance dance dance dance dance
2:12:10 um but there's just a fine line if if like a little
2:12:14 bit too much in the glass it's starting to get really
2:12:17 hot a little bit in the glass too much in the glass
2:12:20 rather starts to kind of pour over and then it becomes
2:12:24 annoying there's just it it it's like you can't go 51%
2:12:28 you have to go 50% My heart's racing all of a sudden.
2:12:40 Mhm.
2:12:42 Double bite.
2:12:43 Yeah.
2:12:43 I Okay.
2:12:47 I've heard you describe your production process
2:12:49 as being inseparable from your process as a songwriter.
2:12:53 Mhm.
2:12:52 Can you give us an example of a specific
2:12:55 sonic choice where the sound was the lyric?
2:12:58 Like what does the texture of a synth say?
2:13:01 Ooh, see I like your questions.
2:13:03 It makes up for this heat.
2:13:05 Um, I think if you listen to a song like We Don't Talk Anymore.
2:13:10 That can't have anything but the guitar.
2:13:12 Like when you press play on the song,
2:13:13 the first thing you hear is if that was a piano, it sound too delicate.
2:13:19 If you take that guitar out, it messes up the lyric.
2:13:23 It It doesn't make it feel as impactful.
2:13:25 It's It's weird.
2:13:26 It's a weird dichotomy because I really I really oh
2:13:30 god I really love these I really like these questions this
2:13:35 but unfortunately it has the caveat of being attached this format where
2:13:40 the deeper and deeper we go the hotter and hotter it gets
2:13:43 I understand why you do this by the way because I'm think when
2:13:46 I worked with Farel he we worked at 5:00 in the morning and we
2:13:49 used a different part of our brains because we were kind of half
2:13:52 awake this is I'm not half awake but I'm like half in pain.
2:13:56 So, my answers are going to be really honest.
2:13:59 That's the point.
2:14:01 Yes.
2:14:00 All right.
2:14:01 So, this one is tropical amaro, and you can be proud of yourself.
2:14:04 Officially at the halfway mark.
2:14:07 Excellent.
2:14:17 Okay.
2:14:18 So, I feel like most people have had the experience of hearing a song.
2:14:22 Yep.
2:14:27 Oh god.
2:14:28 of hearing a song that makes them sad.
2:14:29 Even if nothing is sad is happening in their lives.
2:14:32 Kind of sad right now.
2:14:34 You do.
2:14:34 We'll make sure that we bet it accordingly.
2:14:37 Go ahead.
2:14:38 Sorry.
2:14:39 What is it about the notes themselves that trigger
2:14:42 that kind of emotional response in listeners brains?
2:14:49 The notes themselves that trigger the emotional response.
2:14:52 Well, It has a lot to do with frequencies.
2:15:00 Do you know the song I thought I saw a man brought to life?
2:15:05 Don't seem to know.
2:15:07 Seem to care.
2:15:08 Yeah, I'm familiar.
2:15:10 It was another song originally in 1993.
2:15:13 Oh my god.
2:15:14 It was it was a punk rock song.
2:15:15 And forgive me, I don't remember the the name of the band, but in the late '9s,
2:15:20 they reproduced it and to to make it sound like
2:15:23 a breath of fresh air because the lyric itself is very sad,
2:15:28 but when you accompany it with but the melody rather,
2:15:32 that's what I meant to say.
2:15:33 The lyric is sad, but the melody is really happy.
2:15:36 I'm torn.
2:15:38 I'm a little late.
2:15:39 La.
2:15:40 When you mix happy with sad, you get a mix of emotions.
2:15:44 potential mix of emotions from the listener.
2:15:47 And that's something I love to do in in in in my music.
2:15:50 So the the the the melody is very important.
2:15:52 Uh uh and it could actually say the lyric without the lyric being there.
2:16:00 I just take a a bite of this yogurt.
2:16:03 You've earned it.
2:16:05 I've I've had obstacles thrown my way before,
2:16:07 but I always push through for music.
2:16:09 That's exactly right.
2:16:10 I love music, even if it means being in pain.
2:16:19 This is which one?
2:16:20 Homegrown hell is what this one is called for better or worse.
2:16:25 Okay, this one's Oh my god.
2:16:31 Okay, you got it.
2:16:34 Yeah.
2:16:34 Okay, I'm good.
2:16:36 So, as we've covered today, you have this well doumented ability
2:16:39 to deconstruct exactly what makes a song work.
2:16:42 I wonder when you look at the current pop music
2:16:44 landscape and you think about the sounds that define it,
2:16:47 what excites you the most?
2:16:49 And is there anything you think the game is missing?
2:16:52 What excites me?
2:16:52 We'll start with what excites me the most right now.
2:16:55 I like the fact on a logistical
2:16:59 standpoint that there's no longer people telling you
2:17:03 what song you have to sing in order to get played on this radio station,
2:17:07 in order to get played on Spotify, in order to get played on Apple.
2:17:11 There's it's just best song wins, which is what I've always wanted.
2:17:16 I love artists like Somber who are putting a lot of reverb on their vocals.
2:17:21 And I do think pop music, in my opinion, will expand because of hip-hop.
2:17:26 It's always expanded because of hip-hop.
2:17:29 Um, you know, Katy Perry, Darkhorse would not be here without Juicy J,
2:17:34 36 Mafia, and uh uh Memphis, Tennessee.
2:17:38 Maybe I'm just like not keen to uh uh
2:17:41 or hip to what's going on underground right now,
2:17:44 but I'm really waiting for something to raise its hand and change pop music
2:17:47 because I mean that's that's I I I feel like that's always how it goes.
2:17:58 The nightmare continues here.
2:18:00 Oh god, that's a good title for hot sauce.
2:18:03 The nightmare continues.
2:18:12 You know, on the fifth one, I was a little It was a lot, but this is
2:18:19 Don't speak too soon, though.
2:18:21 Oh, god.
2:18:22 Okay.
2:18:29 Yeah.
2:18:30 Is the yogurt helping at all?
2:18:33 No.
2:18:35 How has your pizza palette evolved over the course of your career?
2:18:38 Like, do you ever think about how you
2:18:40 went from Nelly's's Pizzeria and Rumson to Holly?
2:18:47 Do you ever think about the journey?
2:18:48 Oh, Nelly's fat blunt.
2:18:49 It was a good sandwich.
2:18:53 And Mark Lucali is a good friend.
2:18:55 Best slice in Brooklyn.
2:18:59 Hold on a second.
2:19:00 Yeah, take your time.
2:19:01 Take your time.
2:19:03 I don't know.
2:19:03 Oh, I still like a $150 slice from two bros.
2:19:08 It makes your pee burn.
2:19:11 I love pizza chefs in New York and how hard they work.
2:19:14 And I love pizza in New Jersey.
2:19:16 I love pizza in Connecticut.
2:19:19 I love Pete and Elders.
2:19:23 Would you like some ice cream, by the way?
2:19:24 I love Sebrite pizza.
2:19:25 I would.
2:19:26 Okay, come on in.
2:19:31 I love Sebrite pizza.
2:19:32 Shout out to Kono.
2:19:33 I love LA industry.
2:19:38 Oh my god, how good does that taste?
2:19:42 I started having an anxiety attack a little bit.
2:19:44 I'm like actually serious.
2:19:47 I just need a second.
2:19:48 Yeah.
2:19:48 Yeah.
2:19:48 Yeah.
2:19:50 The sibilance hurts.
2:19:52 The more I progress in my career, I don't become a pizza snob.
2:19:58 I still will go to the shore for a slice.
2:20:01 I still will go to Luigi's for a square slice.
2:20:04 No matter how greasy the bottom of it is, I'll eat.
2:20:07 I'm not a pizza snob.
2:20:08 Go all around the world and eat pizza.
2:20:12 No matter how successful I may be,
2:20:21 but I can't believe I got to go to JFK on a Thursday after this.
2:20:27 I think I Okay, so this one to bomb beyond insanity.
2:20:35 This one will be immediate.
2:20:37 This one's tough for me.
2:20:40 What makes the Spongebob episode Band Geeks
2:20:43 one of the greatest pieces in television ever made?
2:20:48 It's the best show.
2:20:51 It It's the best cartoon episode.
2:20:56 Oh my god.
2:20:57 Yeah.
2:20:58 No, I get it.
2:21:00 It's the best when you see the bird's eye view of Pearl, Mr.
2:21:08 Krabs's daughter, being so huge, amongst these nematodes and fish.
2:21:18 It's the most It's the most genius thing.
2:21:22 Oh my god.
2:21:23 Yep.
2:21:25 It's the most
2:21:27 Steven Henberg.
2:21:28 God rest his soul.
2:21:29 I My personality is based off that show and so is my wife's.
2:21:33 You're an alum of uh the New England music camp.
2:21:37 Yeah.
2:21:37 How did you know that?
2:21:38 You're a band geek yourself.
2:21:40 Uhhuh.
2:21:40 Do you have a most treasured memory from that experience?
2:21:43 M having my having my first cap girlfriend
2:21:47 and being 15 amongst other music nerds and weirdos.
2:21:54 I was in percussion group.
2:21:55 I played the xylophone.
2:21:57 I was horrible at it.
2:21:59 Oh my god.
2:21:59 Sorry.
2:22:01 Okay.
2:22:03 What else we got?
2:22:05 So, up next is a Squash Reaper X from Vermont.
2:22:08 Okay.
2:22:21 Where in Vermont?
2:22:23 Bear.
2:22:24 Oh,[ __] Bear, Vermont.
2:22:26 Yeah.
2:22:27 I don't ski very well, but I like to ski there.
2:22:31 So, fond memories being on top of the sauce, too.
2:22:35 The trick is to have the ice cream right away.
2:22:38 M.
2:22:38 Okay.
2:22:38 You're learning things along the way.
2:22:40 Okay.
2:22:40 It's getting better.
2:22:42 What makes a song like the Star Spangled Banner so exceptional?
2:22:46 I've heard you describe it as the hardest piece of music ever written.
2:22:49 It's constant tension and release.
2:22:54 Oh, say can you see?
2:22:56 I can't even I can't even bother right now.
2:22:59 Just look it up.
2:23:00 Listen to it.
2:23:01 But um a song like the god
2:23:10 the the it it's it's constant tens tension and release.
2:23:13 It's major chord minor chord and it's just has I don't know it just has
2:23:18 a melody that soarses and when you put it in four four timing this is good.
2:23:25 So typically we dab the last wing.
2:23:27 I'm going to not make that an option.
2:23:29 Okay.
2:23:30 Why is it really bad?
2:23:36 Let me just look at doing it.
2:23:40 All my friends are going to make fun of me for No one's going to make fun of me.
2:23:42 No, no, no.
2:23:43 Like I Mike and Adam are going to because they've known me since college
2:23:47 and they've seen me throw up in the bushes
2:23:49 for eating something too spicy in Boston.
2:23:51 Like Oh, wa.
2:23:54 I didn't I thought it was going to I thought it was like cinnamon or something.
2:23:59 Just like I'm not going to put that much here.
2:24:03 Yeah.
2:24:03 Yeah.
2:24:04 Can I smell it?
2:24:05 Go.
2:24:05 Yeah, go for it.
2:24:06 I'm not sure it's going to help you.
2:24:10 I I can't I'm like shaking.
2:24:12 Okay.
2:24:13 I'm just going to do a teensy tiny bit.
2:24:15 Yep.
2:24:15 Me, too.
2:24:20 Okay.
2:24:19 Wow.
2:24:20 Incredible.
2:24:20 Charlie JFK.
2:24:22 JF to JMK
2:24:26 to airport rides.
2:24:27 Oh my[ __] god.
2:24:28 Mhm.
2:24:28 Hold on.
2:24:29 No, hold on.
2:24:32 Mhm.
2:24:32 Okay, Charlie Puth, to close things out,
2:24:34 I understand that early on in your career,
2:24:36 you would cold message YouTubers and offer to make
2:24:38 them a theme song for their channel at $50.
2:24:43 Yeah.
2:24:42 I'd imagine you've added a few zeros to the remittance since then.
2:24:46 But I was wondering if under these ridiculous circumstances,
2:24:49 you could maybe beatbox us a theme song.
2:24:52 I got the 50 on me.
2:24:57 Well, hold on.
2:24:59 All seriously, I did used to do that for YouTubers cuz it was
2:25:07 a way to promote myself on the internet and have them shout me out.
2:25:16 Uh, and I enjoy doing it, too.
2:25:20 I can't even use my lips, you know.
2:25:23 I know.
2:25:23 There's a lot going on.
2:25:24 Um, hold on.
2:25:28 It's getting worse.
2:25:32 I just whether you listen for the first time,
2:25:35 you got nothing out of me physically.
2:25:37 You're just going to have to use some stock music.
2:25:39 I don't
2:25:40 You know what?
2:25:41 You've given us more than enough today.
2:25:44 And look at you taking on the wings of death, living to tell the tale.
2:25:47 Now there's nothing left to do but roll out the red carpet for you.
2:25:50 This camera, this camera, or this camera.
2:25:52 Let the people know what you have going on in your life.
2:25:55 My new album, what do I which camera do I look at?
2:25:59 Whichever one you want.
2:25:59 My new album, whatever's clever, is out.
2:26:03 March 27th, my son or daughter is going to look at this one day.
2:26:08 Be like laugh or be embarrassed.
2:26:10 Hold on.
2:26:13 Come see me at Madison Square Garden if you're in New York.
2:26:18 We have Coco Jones, Raven Len, Jeff Goldblum, Michael McDonald, Kenny Loggins,
2:26:23 Kenny G, all on Whatever's Clever, which is my new album.
2:26:27 This has been horrible, but again, I will do anything for music.
2:26:30 And I want to inspire all of you
2:26:32 to make music and just put your thoughts into art.
2:26:42 Good job.
2:26:43 Great job.
2:26:44 Thank you.
2:26:46 Thank you for the nice questions.
2:26:48 I've watched almost every episode.
2:26:50 Yeah.
2:26:50 Oh, really?
2:26:51 Yeah.
2:26:51 No, I'm a big I'm a big fan.
2:26:52 I really wanted to do this.
2:26:53 I'm so happy you guys reached out.
2:26:55 I really really am.
2:26:57 Well, we love the album.
2:26:58 I've turned so many people onto it.
2:26:59 Yeah.
2:27:00 Yeah.
2:27:00 Yeah.
2:27:01 But this is like a big deal for me being here.
2:27:02 Like in all seriousness, I really wanted to do this for a long time.
2:27:07 Was it worth it?
2:27:09 Yes.
2:27:10 We'll take it.
2:27:11 Hot ones.
2:27:13 LA.
2:27:16 It's coming in.
2:27:18 Yeah.
2:27:17 Yeah.
2:27:18 Okay.
2:27:19 It's starting to smack me in the face just a little bit.
2:27:26 Hey, what's going on everybody for First We Feast.
2:27:28 I'm Sean Evans and you're watching Hot Ones.
2:27:30 It's the show with hot questions and even hotter wings.
2:27:32 And today we're joined by Coleman Domingo.
2:27:34 He's an actor, playwright,
2:27:35 and director coming off back-to-back Academy Award nominations for best actor
2:27:38 and into an incredibly busy year from the final season of Euphoria,
2:27:42 which premieres on HBO April 12th to the return of the four seasons on Netflix
2:27:45 later this spring to the Spielberg directed
2:27:47 sci-fi film Disclosure Day in theaters June 12th.
2:27:49 And finally, he plays the Jackson
2:27:51 Family Patriarch in the long-awaited biopic Michael,
2:27:53 which is set to hit theaters on April 24th.
2:27:56 Coleman Domingo, welcome to the show.
2:27:58 Wow, that was good, man.
2:28:00 I sound really busy.
2:28:02 Well, you are very busy.
2:28:03 Thanks for taking the time.
2:28:04 I know that you're booked.
2:28:06 What's going through your head as you prepare to take on the Hot Ones gauntlet?
2:28:09 I know that you do have a particular fondness for condiments.
2:28:12 I love condiments like dearly.
2:28:13 Like I'd marry condiments if I wasn't married already.
2:28:16 My whole side of fridge is filled with condiments.
2:28:18 And I and I'm not I I'm I think I'm feeling
2:28:22 a little bit more confident though than I was maybe an hour ago.
2:28:25 Um I was I got really nervous.
2:28:27 I don't know why.
2:28:51 It's already on the Oh, on this one.
2:28:54 Oh, good.
2:28:54 Okay.
2:28:55 Garlic delight.
2:29:00 M.
2:29:00 That's nice.
2:29:06 That's good.
2:29:07 It's a delight in my mouth.
2:29:09 So, the music in this film spans some of the most
2:29:11 joyful recordings ever made from ABC to Billy Jean to Thriller.
2:29:16 Was there a performance sequence that was most
2:29:18 mind-blowing to watch on set as a spectator?
2:29:20 Oh, man.
2:29:21 There was.
2:29:22 I would say uh when he does the Mottown
2:29:24 25 performance um the first time you see the moonwalk, Jafar is a revelation.
2:29:29 I mean, you've never seen anything like it.
2:29:30 I mean, he goes um frame by frame and beat
2:29:34 by beat to really be really exacting on Michael's dance,
2:29:38 and that's extraordinary.
2:29:40 I feel good.
2:29:41 Are you ready to move on here to wing number two?
2:29:43 Sure, why not?
2:29:43 All right, so up next is a pickled garlic Sriracha here at the two spot.
2:29:48 I like pickles.
2:29:48 I like garlic.
2:29:49 And I like Sriracha.
2:29:50 So, here we go.
2:29:56 That's good.
2:30:02 It's nice.
2:30:02 It's light.
2:30:04 You're trying to psych me out, right?
2:30:07 You're like, you're like, we're going to do a little dance with it.
2:30:09 It's pretty good.
2:30:11 So,
2:30:11 I've heard you refer to yourself as a child of the theater
2:30:13 and then talk about these storied institutions like the public theater,
2:30:17 downtown Manhattan as church.
2:30:19 Do you have a favorite moment in the dayto-day of a stage production?
2:30:23 Like, is there more magic in the pre-show buzz or the curtain call for you?
2:30:27 H I think the pre-show buzz is great because I feel like
2:30:32 you're about to go take a leap of faith with a bunch
2:30:34 of people who are here to be to experience something honest
2:30:39 and raw and exciting that those you get a lot of nerves.
2:30:43 Sometimes you like you're singing with your castmates.
2:30:45 You're like getting in the the mood of it
2:30:47 so you can prepare yourself for the audience.
2:30:49 It's just amazing.
2:30:50 Reflecting back on early performances at places like the Brooklyn
2:30:53 Rep or Campo Santo or the California Shakespeare Theater?
2:30:57 Wow, you went way back.
2:31:00 Is there a production that you look back on and think
2:31:02 of as most impactful or paradigm shifting in your journey as an actor?
2:31:05 Oh, yeah, for sure.
2:31:06 It's Passing Strange.
2:31:08 It's a show that I did that was
2:31:09 a co-production between Berkeley Rep and the Public Theater.
2:31:12 And anything that I've ever done on Broadway actually
2:31:14 started out in a regional theater and with some wy
2:31:17 way of figuring out we're going to make some
2:31:19 crazy art and then it becomes commercialized in some way.
2:31:22 So Passing Strange was that for me it's a it
2:31:24 was a show that came to me literally right after
2:31:27 I lost my mother and it was the art to sort of like I I'd say it saved my life.
2:31:32 It gave me somewhere to put that heartache.
2:31:34 It gave me somewhere to put all the characters
2:31:37 that were inside of me uh to build
2:31:38 a company and we just we really just like we stood on the edge uh creating
2:31:44 a new musical and then it moved to Broadway
2:31:46 and then it became successful there and then
2:31:49 Spike Lee filmed it and so it's it's one of those special things where I'm like,
2:31:52 "Oh, this absolutely changed all of our lives." White hot mustard sauce.
2:32:03 Oh, that smells so good.
2:32:05 Taking it in.
2:32:06 You know it's a connoisseur.
2:32:08 I can tell this is this is a sauce man right here.
2:32:15 Oh, that's really good.
2:32:19 Hits.
2:32:19 That's nice.
2:32:20 That's really nice.
2:32:22 And sounds like we're three for three
2:32:23 here with the sauces like in your wheelhouse.
2:32:25 That's good.
2:32:26 And it has a little kick.
2:32:28 Mhm.
2:32:27 It has a little a little kick that comes in a little later.
2:32:30 And let's not underestimate the cumulative effect here.
2:32:33 You know what I mean?
2:32:34 We're three down.
2:32:36 Mhm.
2:32:36 Wall starting to close in, but nothing we can't handle.
2:32:38 No, we're doing good.
2:32:39 We're doing good.
2:32:41 What's the experience like for an actor when
2:32:43 you're playing a hero and a villain almost simultaneously?
2:32:46 Like in a year when you go from Mr.
2:32:48 and the Color Purple to then Bard Rustin and Rustin,
2:32:52 does that create like a kind of Stannislosski method vertigo in you as an actor?
2:32:56 Does it really not work like that?
2:32:58 You know what?
2:32:58 I don't know.
2:32:59 But I feel like I know how to tap into those things in very strange ways.
2:33:04 So I constantly have that in my career, which is wild.
2:33:06 But also that speaks to the work that I do.
2:33:09 I keep challenging myself.
2:33:10 And so for me, I know that heroes and villains live in every human being.
2:33:15 And I want to see how I can
2:33:17 make them the most complicated versions of themselves.
2:33:19 So I'm I'm game.
2:33:20 And then as a talk show host,
2:33:22 I'm just curious how you built out your character
2:33:24 as a dystopian game show host in The Running Man.
2:33:27 Like was there anything that you were particularly
2:33:29 drawing on to find like the cynicism in hosting?
2:33:32 Yeah, I went through down the rabbit hole of like show host.
2:33:35 So I went to whether Steve Harvey or whether it was a talk show host,
2:33:39 it could have been Oprah, could have been, you know, Wendy Williams, whatever.
2:33:42 And then eventually I was like,
2:33:43 what kind of show host or talk show host is this person?
2:33:46 And then literally the day before I started rehearsals,
2:33:49 they just released the Jerry Springer documentary.
2:33:53 I started watching it.
2:33:54 I'm like, whoa, whoa, whoa.
2:33:56 I think I have something here.
2:33:58 Here is someone who is absolutely stirring people up and their ugly
2:34:04 selves and then feels like I have nothing to do with it.
2:34:07 I sit back.
2:34:08 I'm chill.
2:34:08 I didn't do anything.
2:34:09 Someone who can rest easy but then also stir it all up.
2:34:14 And I thought, well, that's who he is.
2:34:15 It says in the script that I'm the most famous show host in the world.
2:34:19 And I thought, well, what does that look like?
2:34:21 So, I wanted to create that character who was just
2:34:23 like rich and and fabulous and and a little showy,
2:34:27 but also someone who know, you know, he sleeps well at night.
2:34:31 Yeah.
2:34:31 No blood on my hands.
2:34:32 No blood on his hands at all.
2:34:33 Exactly.
2:34:38 Ooh, that smells good.
2:34:41 Oh my god.
2:34:41 When I walked in here, it just smelled like hot sauce for like everywhere.
2:34:44 Yeah.
2:34:45 Yeah.
2:34:45 You know, that's that's an aggregate, you know,
2:34:47 but once you start taking them out piece by piece,
2:34:49 you know, a lot of beautiful colors in here.
2:34:51 M.
2:34:51 That's good.
2:34:53 Little smoky.
2:34:54 Mhm.
2:34:56 Mhm.
2:34:55 Peachy.
2:34:56 And then I think it has that kick at the end.
2:34:58 You know, you're an experienced sauceman, so you know,
2:35:01 sometimes they can be a little deceiving at first and then
2:35:04 Exactly.
2:35:05 Mhm.
2:35:05 I think I'm doing all right.
2:35:06 You're doing great.
2:35:07 Yeah.
2:35:07 I'm judging myself right now.
2:35:08 Like, how am I doing?
2:35:11 Great.
2:35:12 It feels good.
2:35:12 You're doing great.
2:35:13 Take it from me.
2:35:14 Thank you.
2:35:15 So, whenever I hear you talk about food in an interview,
2:35:17 it's clear that you're someone who knows exactly what you're talking about.
2:35:20 If you could travel at hyper speed for breakfast in London,
2:35:25 lunch in Philadelphia, and dinner in LA, how would you break down
2:35:28 like your three perfect meals in a food day?
2:35:31 Oh, that's good.
2:35:33 Um, breakfast in London.
2:35:35 I think I would just go for a simple English breakfast, you know,
2:35:38 very simple, you know, with the beans and all that good stuff.
2:35:41 Lunch in Philadelphia.
2:35:42 Oh, man.
2:35:43 I would go for a messy, nasty cheese steak with like some isshibble.
2:35:48 I would go to Ishkibble.
2:35:49 That's my jam.
2:35:50 I know.
2:35:51 Is kabibble is everything.
2:35:52 It's messy.
2:35:53 It's greasy.
2:35:54 You can either go with proolone or whiz.
2:35:56 I always change it up.
2:35:57 My orders with salt, pepper, ketchup, pickles, and um sweet peppers.
2:36:01 Um sometimes you get fried onions.
2:36:02 All depends on what I like.
2:36:03 But I love a good cheese steak.
2:36:05 And then dinner, I would go to LA and I would go to I you know what?
2:36:11 There's a really good place called Clark's Seafood and it's fantastic.
2:36:15 It's just really good oysters.
2:36:16 I love a good oyster.
2:36:17 An oyster always tastes like a celebration to me.
2:36:20 Yeah, I agree.
2:36:20 I I celebrate with oysters every birthday.
2:36:25 This one I feel like it it's it's going to mess me up a little bit.
2:36:29 Dangerous.
2:36:29 Dangerous smelling.
2:36:30 It does.
2:36:31 You know, cuz I feel like your body knows chemically.
2:36:33 You know what your what your body likes and what it doesn't like.
2:36:36 And I'm like, I don't know about this.
2:36:38 My brain's like, "Be careful." Let's see.
2:36:49 There's a little chicken on there blowing fire out of its mouth.
2:36:52 Okay.
2:36:52 I know.
2:36:53 All right.
2:36:53 It's all a disclaimer.
2:36:57 Don't give it to your chickens.
2:37:00 Is it true that you choose a unique scent for each character you play?
2:37:03 And if so, can you talk me through how you would define
2:37:07 maybe a scent for like Victor Strand and Fear of the Walking Dead?
2:37:10 Like, can you talk us through the process?
2:37:12 So good, man.
2:37:14 Not that I'm surprised, but like you've done a deep dive.
2:37:17 I love Well, I'm going to have you eat these scorching hot chicken wings.
2:37:20 I got to meet you halfway somewhere.
2:37:21 I love scents.
2:37:22 For Victor Strand, because I was in the apocalypse,
2:37:25 I don't think I use that much scent with him.
2:37:28 Do you have any foundational advice for how
2:37:30 one can find their own signature scent?
2:37:32 Like are there certain personality traits or style proclivities
2:37:35 that make somebody more say like woodsy than citrusy?
2:37:39 I feel like you can do a character analysis and say, "Oh, you're more like this.
2:37:42 I bet you're like this as a person." Like I like fresh, grassy.
2:37:46 I like a little oud.
2:37:47 I like um so the scents that I love are like
2:37:50 a little playful and um but also I'm not afraid of floral either.
2:37:54 Like I love a good gardinia.
2:37:56 I love like something heavy.
2:37:57 But not rose.
2:37:58 Rose is What's wrong with rose?
2:38:00 rose.
2:38:00 There's nothing wrong with rose,
2:38:01 but rose you just got to be very careful with cuz it can be overpowering.
2:38:04 It could dominate anything and you can't really layer rose, you know.
2:38:08 I like to layer I I will wear like three or four scents at one time.
2:38:11 I put a little right here.
2:38:12 I have something different here and I may put something different on the back.
2:38:15 Whoa.
2:38:15 So, you know, you can smell me when I'm leaving.
2:38:21 Got a full three-act structure here.
2:38:23 Exactly.
2:38:23 Exactly.
2:38:30 Homegrown hell.
2:38:32 Okay.
2:38:33 Sauce Leopard.
2:38:35 Hitting it with the
2:38:36 Oh, whoa, whoa.
2:38:38 Now, calm down.
2:38:39 This is You going to put that on you?
2:38:40 Okay, there we go.
2:38:43 Wow.
2:38:43 Okay, this is
2:38:51 This is another one that I think couple seconds down the line.
2:38:54 Oh, wow.
2:38:55 Okay.
2:38:55 Mhm.
2:38:55 Yeah, it sits.
2:38:59 Okay.
2:38:59 Oh, wow.
2:39:00 Okay.
2:39:00 Wait.
2:39:03 That's a sneaky little watch.
2:39:08 Oh,
2:39:10 yeah.
2:39:10 So, maybe this is a naive question,
2:39:12 but is there anything uniquely challenging about a trained
2:39:15 actor playing an amateur one like you did in Sing?
2:39:18 Like, do you have to unlearn things?
2:39:20 Are you actually acting better because you're
2:39:22 capturing a raw version of the form?
2:39:24 It's just from the outside looking in just
2:39:26 seems like such a galaxy brain endeavor.
2:39:29 You know what you have to do?
2:39:29 You have to make a decision on the kind
2:39:31 of actor that you think that your your character is.
2:39:34 Is he a good actor or not?
2:39:36 And I made a choice that he was fine.
2:39:41 I was like I was like yeah, you can you can make a choice on playing an actor.
2:39:44 I'm like he's really good at what he does.
2:39:46 I'm like he's fine.
2:39:47 He he you he's he's good enough.
2:39:49 Cuz I also felt wow.
2:39:54 Oh, something happened.
2:39:56 It just
2:39:56 it's the road we're on going forward.
2:39:58 It just like came back.
2:39:59 It just like Oh, it just like it just hit something in there.
2:40:07 It was like I'm not done.
2:40:10 It was saying you could talk, but I'm not done.
2:40:12 But I think that you really have to make a decision.
2:40:14 and my co-stars who I loved and they were all
2:40:16 men who went through the rehabilitation through the arts program
2:40:19 and they were they were good actors you know
2:40:21 but I think that they had a rawness to them which
2:40:23 was also their appeal you know they they they should
2:40:26 not have been expected to be Meryill Street you know
2:40:29 but but u but they had the the integrity
2:40:32 in the heart to achieve you know greatness in that way Ooh.
2:40:46 Yeah.
2:40:46 Funkies.
2:40:46 Who's Who's funky?
2:40:48 Yeah.
2:40:48 Well, yeah, cuz it's in the possessives.
2:40:50 There is a funky out there somewhere, you know.
2:40:54 This one's kind of the one that knocks me back a little bit.
2:41:01 Ooh.
2:41:00 Ooh.
2:41:10 Yeah.
2:41:10 Okay.
2:41:12 This is uh Yeah, this one is um to be desired.
2:41:17 Yeah, this is uh this is uh this is hitting.
2:41:21 Yeah.
2:41:21 Yeah, it's hitting a little bit.
2:41:22 We're up in the clouds at this point.
2:41:24 Yeah.
2:41:24 So, you just try to get some breaths.
2:41:27 It's tough in this altitude.
2:41:28 Exactly.
2:41:28 Just
2:41:29 Yeah.
2:41:29 Find it.
2:41:30 Find it right there.
2:41:31 Right there.
2:41:33 What's your approach to handling a director's note that feels off base to you?
2:41:36 like are there any uh rules of engagement when it comes to onset diplomacy?
2:41:42 I think you have to I know that I've had a practice of let's
2:41:47 see if there's a note from a director that you're just not sure of.
2:41:51 Sometimes I think the job is to just like look and say, "hm, okay, great.
2:41:54 Got it." And then you go and do what you're supposed to do.
2:41:56 But I think it's also important to try something.
2:41:59 Why not try it?
2:42:01 You don't know what's in their head.
2:42:03 And same here.
2:42:03 But I will always ask an actor say,
2:42:06 "Can I try one?" Or I'll always get one for me if
2:42:08 I want to try something really wild and off-putting in some way.
2:42:11 you know.
2:42:15 Okay,
2:42:18 you did a great job of just eloquently nailing
2:42:21 that answer and then we just kind of let it out, you know.
2:42:25 Yeah, exactly.
2:42:26 Just lose a notch on the belt.
2:42:28 That's it.
2:42:29 It's zen, man.
2:42:30 That's right.
2:42:30 As the actor, I mean, I just go to a zen place, a quiet place.
2:42:34 Yeah.
2:42:34 And reset.
2:42:35 Well, you know, you're really going to need it for this next one because
2:42:40 we have the bomb beyond Insanity.
2:42:42 Yeah, I've seen that before.
2:42:49 This doesn't even smell right.
2:42:52 Okay, just All right, give me Oh.
2:43:09 you were saying.
2:43:11 YEAH.
2:43:14 Look at that actor in you.
2:43:15 Look at that zen.
2:43:16 Look at you finding the balance right now.
2:43:18 Listen, I I' I've worked with zombies.
2:43:20 I' I've played Joe Jackson.
2:43:22 I've
2:43:23 No fear.
2:43:23 No fear.
2:43:24 You just You got to go for it.
2:43:25 You're like, "This is tough." But I've been
2:43:26 on 16-hour sets that are tougher than this.
2:43:30 That's right.
2:43:31 But you know what?
2:43:32 As far as press goes, as far as interviews go,
2:43:34 it's coming in.
2:43:37 Yeah.
2:43:36 Yeah.
2:43:36 Okay.
2:43:37 It's starting to smack me in the face
2:43:39 just a little bit.
2:43:40 As a photojournalism major, a lifelong performer yourself,
2:43:44 do you have any foundational tips for aspiring
2:43:46 actors when it comes to taking proper head shot?
2:43:49 I think I don't even know what you just said.
2:43:51 I think um I think listen um first of all you should always
2:44:00 try to dress like the job you want to get plain and simple.
2:44:04 You want to just show yourself.
2:44:06 You don't want to do like back when I was coming up,
2:44:08 you had to have a shot with some some glasses hanging
2:44:10 from your mouth showing you you're smart looking at a watch.
2:44:15 You're concerned about time and then something when
2:44:17 you were a thug wearing a leather jacket,
2:44:19 you know, like like me trying to look like a thug cuz I'm I'm a tough guy.
2:44:22 A tough guy.
2:44:23 But you needed to have like four.
2:44:24 That was the thing.
2:44:25 And that that was back in the day
2:44:26 where you have to staple the head shots together, you know, doing that.
2:44:29 Thank God.
2:44:30 But I think you just always have to present yourself as like
2:44:32 really in the way that of the job that you want to get.
2:44:35 What's the biggest mistake young actors make when picking an audition monologue?
2:44:39 Like, are there any lessons that you had to learn the hard way?
2:44:42 There is, actually.
2:44:43 I would I've gone into colleges and I would do sort of monologue slams.
2:44:48 I'm going to ask an a student to show me
2:44:50 a monologue that presents um you and what you want to do.
2:44:54 I remember we had this one time it was at SCAD in Savannah
2:44:58 and this young woman presented with a monologue uh from Neil Abut's fat
2:45:03 pig and she was a big girl and then I said so why
2:45:06 did you choose that monologue and she said well I think that this is
2:45:09 the way that industry will see me and then I just said it
2:45:13 and I didn't know that it would lead to this sort of uh
2:45:18 a reawakening I said well how do you see yourself I said because
2:45:23 when you walked Then when I talked to you, I saw a queen.
2:45:26 I saw Juliet.
2:45:27 I saw all these things.
2:45:29 I said, "So don't limit yourself." And she burst into tears.
2:45:32 Everyone burst into tears.
2:45:33 I burst into tears.
2:45:35 But I realized that that was part of I knew that that was my journey.
2:45:37 It was like in order for me and any young person to say,
2:45:40 "How do I want the world to perceive me?" You got to perceive yourself first.
2:45:48 I feel above my lip like Whitney Houston, how she used to sweat.
2:45:54 Oh man, I know that smells like it hurts.
2:46:00 Oh, why a big piece?
2:46:01 No.
2:46:03 You know how the last one was super hot
2:46:06 and then had no redeeming culinary qualities to speak of?
2:46:10 Yeah,
2:46:10 it's almost like it's over.
2:46:12 That's what I'm talking about.
2:46:13 This is actually good.
2:46:14 I'm good.
2:46:15 What you got?
2:46:15 What you got for me?
2:46:17 This is good.
2:46:19 Which pref job do you remember most fondly?
2:46:21 working customer service at Macy's, slinging drinks at the 55 bar.
2:46:25 Your time as an aerial performer in THE CIRCUS.
2:46:29 MAN, YOU DO GOOD.
2:46:31 UM, slinging drinks at 55 bar.
2:46:34 I worked at this famous jazz bar in the West Village.
2:46:37 It's no longer there, but dude, I got to listen to the best jazz
2:46:41 musicians from around the world every single night.
2:46:43 You know, I'm a people person.
2:46:44 I think that was the best side hustle gig for me.
2:46:47 I bartended for 15 years.
2:46:49 From Nash Bridges to True Crime, Law and Order and its various spin-offs,
2:46:53 is there a bit or guest role from early on in your career
2:46:57 that you think of as like the most interesting character to play,
2:47:00 even if the screen time and lines were limited?
2:47:02 Oh, yeah.
2:47:03 I know exactly what that is.
2:47:04 It was it was this role, I wish I remembered his name,
2:47:07 but it was on Nash Bridges,
2:47:09 and I played a this criminal who uh kidnapped Don Johnson's daughter.
2:47:15 They He busts in to get me after he finally finds
2:47:18 out it's me and I'm bench pressing in a coogie sweater.
2:47:25 It's the weirdest thing you've ever seen in your life.
2:47:27 I am dressed in like one of those Bill
2:47:28 Cosby coogie sweaters and I'm bench pressing.
2:47:32 Then I'm like he busted.
2:47:33 I'm like, "Oh, he he's I throw the weights off
2:47:35 and and then I run towards a a a door and he
2:47:43 kicks me in the butt through the door." Then he turns
2:47:46 me around in this heavy ass coogie sweater and he's like,
2:47:50 "Where is she?" I'm like, "I don't know." He's like,
2:47:51 "Where is SHE?" AND HE SMACKS ME, WHATEVER.
2:47:54 And I just remember that was the weirdest thing in the world.
2:47:56 They usually didn't cast people each season.
2:47:59 Once you did that show, that was it for you.
2:48:01 But I kept coming in.
2:48:02 And I was like with a hump on my back or something.
2:48:04 I don't know.
2:48:05 But I guess kept transforming and they never they never found out it was me.
2:48:09 Mark of a great actor.
2:48:10 All right.
2:48:11 All right.
2:48:11 Coleman.
2:48:13 What is this?
2:48:18 The last dab.
2:48:22 Why pinky up?
2:48:23 I'm like, what am I doing?
2:48:24 I'm like I'm like what am I doing?
2:48:28 You're a sophisticated
2:48:30 Yeah.
2:48:30 Why?
2:48:30 You're sophisticated.
2:48:31 That's why.
2:48:32 You're sophisticated.
2:48:33 Thank you.
2:48:34 Here we go.
2:48:34 Last dab.
2:48:37 Ready?
2:48:38 Cheers.
2:48:38 Cheers.
2:48:45 And with that, Coleman, Domingo, the wings of death are behind us.
2:48:50 Pinky out.
2:48:53 Delicate napkin.
2:48:54 Okay.
2:48:54 Mhm.
2:48:55 All right.
2:48:56 And you know, a pain shot to the side of my mouth for no reason.
2:49:02 This has been a wonderfully spicy journey through your acting career.
2:49:05 And I've heard you talk about how theater trained you
2:49:08 to find the truth even in the most extreme of circumstances.
2:49:12 And you know what?
2:49:13 There's nothing realer than what we just did,
2:49:15 eating 10 scorching hot chicken wings.
2:49:20 Uhhuh.
2:49:19 Is there a monologue or a line from a play that comes
2:49:22 to mind that best distills the kind of truth that you're feeling right now?
2:49:29 For all that I could ever read, could I ever hear by Taylor history,
2:49:33 the course of true love never did run smooth,
2:49:36 but either was different than blood, or else misgraphed in respect of years,
2:49:39 or else it stood upon the choice of friends.
2:49:40 Or if there were a sympathy and choice, war, death,
2:49:42 or sickness did lay siege to it, making it momentary as a sound,
2:49:45 swift as a shadow, short as a dream,
2:49:47 brief as the lightning in the colleague night
2:49:49 that in a spleen unfolds both heaven and earth.
2:49:52 An era man has power to say behold.
2:49:56 The jaws of darkness do devour it up.
2:49:59 So quick bright things come to confusion.
2:50:03 The jaws of darkness stood no chance.
2:50:05 And look at you Coleman Domingo taking
2:50:08 on the wings of death living to tell the tale.
2:50:10 And now there's nothing left to do but roll out the red carpet for you.
2:50:13 This camera.
2:50:14 This camera.
2:50:14 This camera.
2:50:15 Let the people know what you have going on in your life.
2:50:17 Uh what?
2:50:21 I have um Okay.
2:50:24 Hi, my name is Coleman Domingo.
2:50:27 I have a few things going on besides that pain shooting around my mouth.
2:50:33 It's like dancing around doing figure8s and stuff.
2:50:37 I am um I have a a second season of uh
2:50:42 four seasons coming out on Netflix and then I also have
2:50:46 the third season of Euphoria coming out and then I have
2:50:51 uh a little biopic about Michael Jackson called Michael coming out.
2:50:55 So I really hope to uh see you in the movie theaters on the small screen.
2:51:01 Sweet Jesus.
2:51:04 Oh.
2:51:06 It keeps going.
2:51:09 Oh, I did it.
2:51:10 I did it without that was my goal to see if I can get through it.
2:51:13 It was no water, no milk.
2:51:18 No.
2:51:17 I was like, but I'm crazy like that.
2:51:19 I feel like I'm forte can do it, I can do it.
2:51:22 Yeah.
2:51:23 Yeah.
2:51:23 Cuz Will Forte did it and I went to set.
2:51:25 I'm like, you're a maniac.
2:51:28 Thank you.
2:51:28 Thank you so much,
2:51:29 dude.
2:51:29 THIS IS GREAT.
2:51:32 I
2:51:32 HAD A great time, son.
2:51:33 This is great, man.
2:51:34 Thank you so much.
2:51:38 Wow.
2:51:41 It's like someone's in your house and you don't know it yet.
2:51:45 I just heard some I just heard something in the kitchen.
2:51:53 Hey, what's going on everybody for First We Feast.
2:51:55 I'm Sean Evans and you're watching Hot Ones.
2:51:56 It's the show with hot questions and even hotter wings.
2:51:59 And today we're joined by Luke Combmes.
2:52:01 He's an eighttime Grammy Award nominated artist and mainstay at the top
2:52:03 of the Billboard country charts for a half decade straight.
2:52:06 He also has a brand new album on the way as well.
2:52:08 It's called The Way I Am, which is scheduled for release on March 20th,
2:52:11 followed by the My Kind of Saturday Night Tour.
2:52:13 Check it out.
2:52:13 But first things first, The Wings of Death.
2:52:15 Luke Combmes, welcome to the show.
2:52:16 Oh, thanks for having me, man.
2:52:17 I'm excited to be here.
2:52:18 Excited.
2:52:19 What's going through your head as you prepare to take on the Hot Ones gauntlet?
2:52:22 Are you a spicy food fan by chance?
2:52:24 I'm a spicy food fan, but I'm not going to overpromise and underdel.
2:52:29 So, this will be hot.
2:52:31 This will destroy me.
2:52:32 There's no doubt.
2:52:33 Um, but I'm at least mentally prepared.
2:52:36 I'm not sure about physically, but we're about to find out.
2:52:38 I feel like The smell is the first thing you notice.
2:53:06 Oh boy.
2:53:06 Here we go.
2:53:07 All right.
2:53:11 That's a good It's a good wing.
2:53:14 That's a good wing.
2:53:19 That's good, man.
2:53:20 That's a good flavor on that one.
2:53:22 My favorite song on the new album is Daytona 499, which features this funny,
2:53:27 clever metaphor about a relationship falling just one lap short.
2:53:31 Yes.
2:53:31 Out of my own curiosity, can you give me the origin story of that song?
2:53:35 Yeah.
2:53:35 So, uh, one of my dear friends, Drew Parker, uh, sent me that song and it was
2:53:40 it was kind of like a half-written thing when he sent it to me and was like,
2:53:43 "Is this is there anything to this?" I was like, "I love this.
2:53:46 I love it." I I grew up a a NASCAR fan.
2:53:49 My my grandfather was a courier and he would
2:53:52 actually deliver paychecks to the drivers like after races.
2:53:56 I spent a lot of Sundays with my grandfather watching races.
2:53:59 Obviously, I gravitated to the idea for that reason.
2:54:02 But then again, I'm a sucker for a good hook, a clever hook,
2:54:05 and that one to me like doesn't get more
2:54:06 clever than that in the country space in my opinion.
2:54:09 And those are like that's like this super niche
2:54:12 country music thing of like these tongue andcheek like catchy
2:54:17 songs that are I don't know that just grab
2:54:19 people's attention and that was one of those for me.
2:54:26 Oh, okay.
2:54:26 We got a flat dude.
2:54:28 But should I do the push here?
2:54:29 There you go.
2:54:30 Get the push going.
2:54:31 This guy's been around some wings.
2:54:32 Oh, buddy.
2:54:34 I don't think anyone watching this had any thoughts otherwise.
2:54:38 as I would imagine.
2:54:41 Clean pull.
2:54:42 Damn.
2:54:46 Yeah.
2:54:45 Textbook.
2:54:46 That's how you do it.
2:54:48 You have an amazing quote where you talk about how
2:54:50 you learn to sing from listening to the Backstreet Boys.
2:54:53 What is an album like Millennium?
2:54:55 Like how is that a master class for a young singer?
2:54:57 Like what did you learn from them?
2:54:59 I mean obviously there's, you know,
2:55:00 there's five different singers in the group, right?
2:55:02 and they all kind of get turns to showcase
2:55:05 their particular style and everybody's kind of got different
2:55:09 ranges and different natural tendencies that that they try
2:55:12 to use and they're incredibly singable verses and courses.
2:55:16 Those songs were engineered to be like musical drugs.
2:55:20 Like you hear them and it's just like I want to hear this again.
2:55:23 I need to hear this again.
2:55:25 And you know as you kind of study those things,
2:55:28 learning to write songs, you realize that was done intentionally.
2:55:32 Like there is a science to writing those kind
2:55:34 of songs and that there needs to be a hook every 20 seconds that people remember
2:55:38 and moments that people want to come back to.
2:55:40 And you learn that.
2:55:42 You also learn how to do the same chorus melody maybe in a different style
2:55:48 because if Nick Carter is singing it and you know Kevin singing the next one,
2:55:53 it's like they just have these little differences
2:55:54 and inflections that ultimately matter and lead to the success
2:55:59 of a group like that and help a young singer
2:56:02 who's learning to find their voice and hone their talent.
2:56:05 It helps them learn five different things at one
2:56:08 time instead of hearing one singer do something.
2:56:11 and you get to hear how five singers would sing the same chorus instead of one.
2:56:15 So, it's really interesting.
2:56:21 That's my favorite one so far.
2:56:26 And I feel like the least hot maybe.
2:56:29 I think there's some sweetness.
2:56:30 I think the mustard cuts it.
2:56:31 Yeah.
2:56:32 Just a little bit.
2:56:33 There's kind of a lingering hit and a little bit
2:56:34 of a cumulative effect that I'm starting to pick up.
2:56:37 But you're right.
2:56:38 There's a sweetness almost to this one that kind of vinegar in there
2:56:42 probably helps cut the heat a lot, I would imagine.
2:56:45 So, I was reading an interesting story about how early on in your career,
2:56:48 you didn't have enough money to master an entire six track EP.
2:56:52 So, instead, you put your entire budget on one song,
2:56:55 which turned out to be Hurricane.
2:56:57 What was it about that song that made it the one that you put all your chips on?
2:57:01 Well, interestingly and luckily enough,
2:57:04 it was the only song that was in any state close enough to putting out.
2:57:09 So, it was basically a Hail Mary of like, well, this is all we got.
2:57:13 It's either this or nothing.
2:57:14 So, I spent the last 200 bucks that I had.
2:57:18 I hadn't done that previously.
2:57:19 So, I hadn't put that in my budget as an expense that I needed to be aware of.
2:57:25 And it comes down, I'm like, "Well, dude,
2:57:26 I don't have enough money to master these.
2:57:28 Like, which one is good enough?" enough.
2:57:30 And he's like, "This one." I'm like, "Perfect.
2:57:32 Let's do it." Put it out.
2:57:34 Sells 10,000 units the first week, which I thought was like, "Cool.
2:57:39 That's probably what everyone's doing or that's less
2:57:41 than everyone's doing because again, I don't know."
2:57:46 Mhm.
2:57:45 Um, and it turns out apparently it wasn't what everyone was doing and it
2:57:49 was a lot more for an independent kid who's dropped out of college,
2:57:53 moved to town, and doesn't have anything going on.
2:57:56 And that's kind of what led to a hundred other dominoes falling in my favor.
2:58:01 So I'm very I'm very thankful for that for that moment.
2:58:04 And and uh obviously it was supposed to work out that way.
2:58:12 It just immediately has that like taste of like this is hotter than I would.
2:58:17 The habanero in particular particular
2:58:20 it really announces its presence right up front.
2:58:23 You know, you just get that smokiness.
2:58:24 It goes right to the chest.
2:58:27 I feel like that's the one I was smelling when they put the when
2:58:30 the people came over in the hazmat suits with the with the wings.
2:58:35 I feel like that's the one you're getting.
2:58:38 As someone who's steeped in the genre and seems intent
2:58:41 on making music that you want to hear as a fan,
2:58:43 what do you make of phrases like gentleman
2:58:45 country or bro country to define particular subg genres?
2:58:49 There's there's a huge contingency of people I'm
2:58:52 probably guilty of it at some time as well,
2:58:54 but going well that's not country or this is
2:58:57 too country or that's this or whatever.
2:58:59 It's like I think country music is enjoying
2:59:02 a moment of relevancy that it maybe has never had,
2:59:06 you know, outside of that early '9s era.
2:59:09 The Shaniah Twain, G, Ranny Travis, Alan Jackson, like Brooks and Dunn.
2:59:14 That was a huge moment, too.
2:59:16 But I feel like we've crossed over like into the pop culture zeitgeist.
2:59:21 I mean, there's three country artists selling
2:59:23 out multiple nights at stadiums right now.
2:59:26 That's as many as have ever done it in the history
2:59:29 of country music and it's all happening at the same time.
2:59:32 So, I that's really cool to me um to feel like I'm a part of.
2:59:37 I think that conversation is maybe a little unwarranted,
2:59:41 but I think ultimately it benefits the genre.
2:59:49 I'm really worried about the next half.
2:59:53 I don't know that it's happening now.
2:59:59 I was just about to say I think I'm good.
3:00:02 And then I think it's getting there.
3:00:04 A shoe drops.
3:00:06 But it's not as bad.
3:00:06 It's not as bad as the last one to me.
3:00:09 It's not as not as hot as the last one.
3:00:11 The habanero, like we talked about, something different.
3:00:17 Yeah, it punches above its weight class for sure.
3:00:22 What stands out as the rowdiest room that you've ever
3:00:24 had to win over with just a microphone and a guitar?
3:00:27 Oh gosh.
3:00:29 Uh, there was a place we used to play in East Tennessee called the Dude Drop In.
3:00:35 the guy who I was playing shows with at the time, Adam Church,
3:00:38 dear friend of mine, owe a ton of my success to him.
3:00:42 And I remember telling his dad, he was actually from Boone.
3:00:44 He grew up in Boone.
3:00:46 I remember telling his dad, he's like,
3:00:47 "Where are y'all playing tonight?" I was like,
3:00:48 "Oh, playing the dude drop in." He goes, "Oh,
3:00:50 the knife and gun club." He's like, "You're going to love that place." So,
3:00:54 it was like you still smoke in there at that time.
3:00:57 Uh, and the the stage was about this high.
3:01:00 So you get on stage and it was like like a quarter step up onto the stage,
3:01:05 people like dancing in front of you.
3:01:07 But yeah, I've been in a few rooms like that, you know,
3:01:09 middle of nowhere, South Carolina.
3:01:10 And it's a little bit intimidating cuz people are like,
3:01:13 "This freaking better be good." You know what I mean?
3:01:16 Like that was the idea.
3:01:16 It's like I'm in here.
3:01:17 I paid 10 bucks to get in here.
3:01:19 Better be good.
3:01:20 I have no idea who you are and I'm going
3:01:21 to be pissed if I didn't get my $10 out of you.
3:01:24 Yeah.
3:01:25 So I've had many of those nights.
3:01:31 Homegrown Hill.
3:01:32 I like that one.
3:01:35 Oh,
3:01:36 that's hot.
3:01:36 Yeah.
3:01:37 And this one a little bit hotter than the uh white hot mustard.
3:01:41 Personally speaking,
3:01:44 definitely the white hot mustard.
3:01:45 That bottle might be walking out the door with me there, buddy.
3:01:48 You know what?
3:01:48 All the bottles are walking out the door with you today.
3:01:51 Even better.
3:01:53 You don't you don't leave here empty-handed.
3:01:55 Okay.
3:01:56 So, I've interviewed a lot of comedians over the years
3:01:58 who will always talk about the importance of doing a thousand
3:02:01 shows in a basement club or at an open mic
3:02:04 before ever stepping on stage in front of an arena.
3:02:06 Does that at all resonate with you
3:02:08 and your history of playing dive bars to crowds
3:02:11 as small as five to then playing Beaver
3:02:13 Stadium and a soldout crowd of 80,000 people?
3:02:16 Yeah, it's defin there's definitely some disparity there in those shows.
3:02:20 The small shows can be really difficult.
3:02:22 If you're having a bad show, it's amplified by a thousand.
3:02:26 If there's 10 people in there and everyone's kind of like like you can really
3:02:31 feel that energy.
3:02:31 Yeah.
3:02:32 The guy that's sitting 2 feet away from you,
3:02:35 it's like, man, this guy's pretty rough, huh?
3:02:37 You know, like you you hear that guy say that in the small room,
3:02:40 you know what I mean?
3:02:40 It's like you can People don't wear it well when
3:02:43 the show is not going well in a room of this size.
3:02:46 I think in today's social media age,
3:02:49 people's careers take off faster and faster.
3:02:52 I don't think that's all bad, but you welcome in the criticisms of the world.
3:02:58 And if you're a 14-year-old kid and people are online or going,
3:03:01 "Hey, man, your ass.
3:03:04 Don't play this anymore.
3:03:05 Don't ever do this." Well, does that stop the next Bob Dylan from writing songs?
3:03:12 Like I would that would be devastating to find
3:03:14 out that some kid who's inherently talented and has just
3:03:18 hasn't had enough time yet is exposed to the cruelty
3:03:22 of the world or the internet or people's opinions, right?
3:03:26 And so that I feel like is the is the big
3:03:28 downside of not going and just playing those little shows
3:03:32 and figuring yourself out on this stage that's like it's
3:03:36 okay to fail or feel like it's okay to fail.
3:03:39 still okay to fail, but now you just have to fail
3:03:42 in front of millions of people potentially instead of failing
3:03:45 in your butt dive bar in your hometown where there's
3:03:48 10 people and it's not a big deal, you know?
3:03:51 So, it's it's an interesting time.
3:03:58 Yeah, it's got some heat.
3:04:01 Yeah, it's hot.
3:04:02 Some violence on this one.
3:04:05 This is the This is like the gnarliest one since the habanero one.
3:04:09 And first one that has the initial like jab.
3:04:12 And we're on the gnarly wave.
3:04:13 Yeah.
3:04:14 From here on out.
3:04:15 It's just more for me.
3:04:17 The thing is more like the nose running.
3:04:19 It's the thing that drives me crazy when you have to like sniffle and talk.
3:04:22 Yeah.
3:04:22 It starts to squeeze you like a sponge.
3:04:24 The deeper you go.
3:04:27 The milk's making more sense.
3:04:29 It's there for you.
3:04:30 Yeah, that one's hot.
3:04:32 So, there's an adlib at the end of One Too Many.
3:04:34 banger, by the way, where you say, "Come on, that's a country song."
3:04:39 What does that mean to you exactly that something's
3:04:41 a proper tribute to the genre of country music?
3:04:44 Yeah.
3:04:45 I just think I don't know.
3:04:46 It's like cuz that moment at the end of that song is like
3:04:49 was just truly me in the studio like running it down with the band.
3:04:54 I'm hearing it through the headphones.
3:04:55 They're hearing it through the headphones.
3:04:57 I'm singing it full breath, full volume.
3:04:59 I'm like, you're feeling the vibe of that song
3:05:03 come to life for the very first time.
3:05:06 And that was the moment of like finishing it, putting it in the frame and going,
3:05:10 "This is exactly what I wanted this song to be like."
3:05:12 Come on, that's a country song.
3:05:13 And it happened.
3:05:14 Yeah, for sure.
3:05:15 I think I said I think I'm there's an expletive in there that was muted out.
3:05:21 Actually, if you listen to it, come on.
3:05:22 That's a[ __] country song.
3:05:25 Literally, that was it.
3:05:25 Yeah.
3:05:26 Yeah.
3:05:28 Here we go.
3:05:33 The bomb.
3:05:39 I'm not there yet, which is still really freaking me
3:05:41 out cuz I know I know it's going to be there.
3:05:46 I It's like someone's in your house and you don't know it yet.
3:05:50 Someone just heard some I just heard something in the kitchen.
3:05:54 Oh, now I'm going to check it out.
3:05:56 Oh, no.
3:05:58 There's somebody there.
3:06:01 There's definitely somebody there.
3:06:03 And he's masked in arms.
3:06:04 Yeah, dude.
3:06:04 He's He's not friendly.
3:06:07 Oh, yeah.
3:06:08 Yeah.
3:06:10 Oh, yeah.
3:06:10 That sucks, dude.
3:06:14 Yeah.
3:06:14 Still good though.
3:06:15 Nice wing.
3:06:16 Not something I would want at the house still, you know, have for dinner.
3:06:20 Well, for better or worse, you will be going, you know, as I promised.
3:06:24 There's there's a throat.
3:06:26 That's the worst cuz then you can't really talk.
3:06:28 I'm going go with milk.
3:06:29 Is this wuss to go with milk?
3:06:30 Yeah.
3:06:31 Yeah.
3:06:31 Yeah.
3:06:31 Go.
3:06:31 No.
3:06:31 No.
3:06:32 No.
3:06:32 It's not at all.
3:06:33 No.
3:06:34 No.
3:06:34 Cuz you said yes.
3:06:36 I know you didn't mean to say yes, but
3:06:39 what's the point of pride now?
3:06:41 That I'm right there with you.
3:06:42 I'm right there with you.
3:06:44 For the uninitiated, what is Cookout?
3:06:46 And do you have a go-to tray order and fancy shake flavor?
3:06:51 When I go to cookout, no one else is allowed to order.
3:06:55 Char, grilled hamburgers, the whole nine.
3:06:58 Like you can get a corn dog as a side, which is fire.
3:07:01 Quesadilla as a side, by the way.
3:07:04 You can have a milkshake for like a $150.
3:07:06 It's unbelievable.
3:07:07 Imagine like Chick-fil-A without all the like helpful
3:07:11 camp counselors that stand outside and like you come
3:07:15 up and it's just a guy that's like he's
3:07:17 from the south but his attitude is giving Philly
3:07:21 in the window and he's like cookout what do
3:07:24 you want you know and you're like um I think
3:07:28 it's like you can hear him being like come
3:07:30 on like you can feel the guy in the thing
3:07:35 oh god be careful I right when I touched it,
3:07:38 I was like, "Uh-oh, okay, look, let's find."
3:07:41 And there's also fresh ones over there if Okay.
3:07:43 I was like, "I need a safe space."
3:07:48 Yeah.
3:07:48 Um, it's like big double tray, cheese, bacon,
3:07:51 mayo, ketchup, corn dog, Cajun cheese, fries, sweet tea.
3:07:55 Like, I can fire it off like that.
3:07:57 When people hear me order it that quick and they're like,
3:07:59 "What did you just order?" I'm like,
3:08:02 "I ordered a double cheeseburger with bacon and ketchup." I just said it really
3:08:05 fast and the guy is going to know when I pull up to the window.
3:08:09 He's like, "This guy knows ball.
3:08:11 He's a guy.
3:08:12 This guy has spent 401ks worth on in his day."
3:08:19 And they're going to be thankful for that.
3:08:21 They're going to be thankful.
3:08:22 Oh man, I'm ready for this.
3:08:24 Here we go.
3:08:25 These last two are going to be something, aren't they?
3:08:27 If you're ready.
3:08:28 I'm ready, baby.
3:08:29 Bring the pain.
3:08:30 This one is a smoked srano squash reaper X.
3:08:36 Oh man, it's like your X.
3:08:38 Like it's already bad.
3:08:40 That reads like your order from Cookout, you know?
3:08:42 It really does.
3:08:44 I love how they put Serrano in there like
3:08:45 it's going to have any flavor at all, dude.
3:08:49 Butterfly Bakery.
3:08:50 Yeah, they make that sound nice, don't they?
3:09:00 This one already has more flavor.
3:09:05 There we go.
3:09:06 It's got some flavor though.
3:09:09 Mhm.
3:09:09 I'm liking that.
3:09:11 So, I understand that when you were
3:09:12 rejected for the singing competition series, The Voice,
3:09:16 they gave you a piece of feedback that read,
3:09:17 "You're a great singer, but lacking in TV entertainment value.
3:09:21 Athletes are often motivated by perceived sllights.
3:09:24 I'm curious if it's the same for a musician like in what way did
3:09:28 early rejection what kind of role did it play in your motivation as an artist?
3:09:32 That situation gave me so much confidence because I'm like okay
3:09:38 if I'm taking this at face value which I did it
3:09:41 could have very easily been like well we can't tell this guy
3:09:44 he's a terrible singer like just tell me he's not interesting.
3:09:48 Maybe that will make him less sad you know which it did.
3:09:51 It worked by the way.
3:09:53 So I'm like, "So you're saying I'm a good singer is what you're saying.
3:09:56 You're saying I'm good." All I was looking
3:09:58 for at that time was some sort of validation like,
3:10:01 "Hey, I am an above average singer.
3:10:03 I feel that way in my soul." So that was a that was a big moment for me.
3:10:07 I'm I'm really honestly thankful for that experience.
3:10:09 You have a glass half full perspective on the whole thing,
3:10:12 but when it comes to your actual milk glass, totally full to the full, baby.
3:10:17 I feel like that's about to change.
3:10:24 I'm not going to be the first country singer on to not.
3:10:28 Oh man, that's scary.
3:10:30 Okay.
3:10:32 Got to get it all here.
3:10:33 Okay.
3:10:34 You got to get it all.
3:10:35 Cheers, dude.
3:10:38 Cheers.
3:10:38 Oh, that went right on the tongue, too.
3:10:41 Mhm.
3:10:42 Direct hit.
3:10:44 Yeah.
3:10:44 Nowhere to hide.
3:10:45 Target.
3:10:46 Target engaged.
3:10:50 Yeah.
3:10:51 Yeah.
3:10:54 But the good news is Luke Combmes, we've reached the end of the line.
3:10:59 We're at the summit of Spice Mountain.
3:11:01 And as we've learned today, you know,
3:11:02 you're somebody whose music has taken you
3:11:05 to Nashville and then around the world and back.
3:11:09 But I know at the end of the day, you'll always be a North Carolina boy.
3:11:13 The outdoors, it's served like an escape from the blinding lights of fame.
3:11:18 And with that in mind,
3:11:19 I was wondering if you could give us a turkey call tutorial on wing 10.
3:11:28 Do you have some mouth calls?
3:11:29 I have some mouth calls.
3:11:31 No one ever put these mouth calls in after we
3:11:33 put them in with this hot sauce, by the way.
3:11:35 That's what I'm saying.
3:11:36 We're breaking new ground over here.
3:11:38 Where did you find these?
3:11:39 I mean, I guess you can find anything in New York.
3:11:42 I'm surprised that these are available guys in here.
3:11:46 It's the New York version of the uh turkey call over here.
3:11:50 It's like a cool hair clip to wear while you're calling turkeys.
3:11:53 You know,
3:11:55 I don't know that I'm going to be the best teacher cuz it took me it was
3:11:58 just years of struggle and annoyance to everyone around
3:12:01 me to get any kind of good at this.
3:12:03 And I'm I'm still I'm not good at all.
3:12:05 If you hear a good turkey caller after this, look up good turkey calls.
3:12:10 This video is not going to show up.
3:12:11 out of the way.
3:12:12 I don't want any of the turkey hunters out there to think
3:12:14 I'm claiming to be like any kind of expert at this.
3:12:18 So, you're going to this way front.
3:12:19 And so, the this read here,
3:12:21 like this, the diaphragm is actually going to be
3:12:23 in the front of your mouth like this.
3:12:26 So, you're going to sit it like in the roof of your mouth up here.
3:12:31 Press your tongue against it.
3:12:32 And you want to force air between those reads.
3:12:36 Give it a shot.
3:12:37 WHAT'S HERE?
3:12:39 Pretty pretty good.
3:12:40 Pretty good.
3:12:54 With some style on it.
3:12:56 And look at you.
3:12:58 Yeah.
3:12:58 Luke Combmes taking on the wings of death, living to tell the tale.
3:13:01 And now there's nothing left to do but roll out the red carpet for you.
3:13:04 100%.
3:13:04 This camera, this camera, or this camera.
3:13:05 Let the people know what you have going on in your life.
3:13:08 Luke Combmes.
3:13:09 Can't wait for turkey season.
3:13:11 New album season March 20th, the way I am.
3:13:13 This is the only PR thing I've ever wanted to do in like my 10 years of forever.
3:13:19 So, thank you for having me on.
3:13:21 Thanks for letting me be the first country artist.
3:13:22 The wings were insane.
3:13:24 Very good.
3:13:25 Hot sauce.
3:13:25 Very hot.
3:13:26 Thank you guys so much.
3:13:37 I've been dreaming of that, dude.
3:13:40 I remember asking years ago, like asking Carlo, I was like,
3:13:42 "How do we get on hot?" She was like, "I don't know." Like, "I don't know.
3:13:45 I don't know for everybody else."
3:13:47 Thanks for coming in, man.
3:13:48 You did great.
3:13:48 It was fun, dude.
3:13:49 Thanks for having us.
3:13:50 That was a blast, dude.
3:13:51 Come on.
3:13:51 That's a motherucking country song.
3:13:56 What's happening to me right now?
3:14:00 It's like a hell hole.
3:14:07 Hey, what's going on everybody for First Week feast.
3:14:09 I'm Sean Evans and you're watching Hot Ones.
3:14:11 It's the show with hot questions and even
3:14:12 hotter wings and today we're joined by Hillary Duff.
3:14:15 She's a singer, songwriter, and actress who's been a cultural staple
3:14:17 for decades and she's back with her newly released
3:14:20 acclaimed album Luck or Something and gearing up
3:14:22 for her first world tour in 18 years.
3:14:24 Be on the lookout for the Lucky Me Tour coming to a city near you,
3:14:27 including Madison Square Garden this summer.
3:14:29 Hillary Duff, welcome to the show.
3:14:31 I'm so excited to be here.
3:14:33 How are you around hot sauce?
3:14:34 Before we get started,
3:14:35 I'm good around hot sauce.
3:14:36 I've I don't recognize any of these.
3:14:40 Probably they're not a, you know, kitchen staple for me,
3:14:42 but I do have at least 10 hot sauces in my refrigerator at all times.
3:14:48 So, we have a good foundational Yeah, we have a good base to build on.
3:14:52 Are you ready to get started?
3:14:53 But I'm not trying to be too cocky.
3:14:54 I'm terrified for what's about to happen.
3:14:56 Also, just this aroma of like spice is it's strong right now.
3:15:24 So the viewer knows like it's also in the air.
3:15:30 Cheers.
3:15:31 Cheers.
3:15:34 M.
3:15:36 Very good.
3:15:38 Little sweetness.
3:15:43 Little kick.
3:15:44 Nothing too serious.
3:15:46 So, I'd imagine that it's kind of a trippy experience to create a set
3:15:49 list for a new tour featuring songs that you wrote more than two decades ago.
3:15:54 Has there been a funniest or most sentimental
3:15:56 moment and rediscovering the bops of your past?
3:15:59 Like, I'd imagine in some ways it's like reading an old diary.
3:16:03 Well, we don't have to pretend that you
3:16:05 haven't seen embarrassing things about me on the internet.
3:16:07 So, you know, there are certain songs
3:16:12 that the fans are like really fighting to be heard.
3:16:16 And some of those include The Girl Can Rock, The Math,
3:16:25 some real deep cuts that I don't know if I can embody anymore, but I might try.
3:16:31 I'll darn it.
3:16:31 You'll try.
3:16:32 I am.
3:16:33 Honestly, I've had so much fun going back into my catalog and being like,
3:16:38 I want to do that one.
3:16:39 I want to do that one.
3:16:40 I can't ever do that one.
3:16:41 Um, and I don't want to say never, cuz you know,
3:16:44 anything goes and I get to drive the ship.
3:16:47 I took two bites, my friend.
3:16:49 You know what?
3:16:49 Then I got to join you.
3:16:50 I think you do.
3:16:52 I got to stay on the pace.
3:16:54 Are we going in for number two?
3:16:55 If you're ready,
3:16:56 I am.
3:16:57 So, up next is a pickled garlic Sriracha.
3:16:59 Give me anything pickle.
3:17:01 Woo.
3:17:01 It's your favorite.
3:17:02 Love a pickle.
3:17:03 Mhm.
3:17:04 All kinds.
3:17:13 I love that.
3:17:14 Again, there's a sweetness.
3:17:16 Pickly enough for you.
3:17:17 I could use a little more pickle.
3:17:19 M.
3:17:19 All right.
3:17:20 We're taking the notes.
3:17:22 Did you take two bites?
3:17:24 Both sides.
3:17:25 All right.
3:17:26 I'm dancing with you, Hillary.
3:17:28 Okay.
3:17:28 All right.
3:17:29 I like that.
3:17:30 That's good.
3:17:30 Good flavor.
3:17:31 Your eyes are getting a little glassy.
3:17:33 Oh, I like this.
3:17:36 I like this part.
3:17:37 I like this part.
3:17:38 All right.
3:17:38 I'm just going to try to keep up with you over here.
3:17:40 Okay.
3:17:41 But I'll make it if you can.
3:17:42 Just tell me if I have anything on my face.
3:17:43 Okay, I will.
3:17:44 I got you.
3:17:44 And same for me.
3:17:45 Okay.
3:17:46 Is there a song of yours that bangs hardest in a live show setting?
3:17:50 Like, is there one that you can always depend on?
3:17:52 Like a comedian who keeps a joke in their back
3:17:54 pocket for when they need to turn the room?
3:17:56 Luckily, I have a few.
3:17:58 Not to brag.
3:18:02 I'm going to say wake up always slaps and then I
3:18:07 get to lean on what dreams are made of which takes everything.
3:18:10 Nice to have that.
3:18:11 Yeah.
3:18:12 Yeah.
3:18:12 You know, I'm a little congested right now,
3:18:14 so I'm looking forward to this being like an opener,
3:18:18 which I know is coming for me.
3:18:19 Oh, okay.
3:18:19 I'm a little worried about the the snot situation.
3:18:21 I'm starting to run, but it's not My mouth's great.
3:18:25 You're looking good.
3:18:25 You know, I'm I'm I'm on it.
3:18:26 All right.
3:18:27 If there's some sauce, if there's something in the teeth, I'll let you know.
3:18:31 But so far, I'm good.
3:18:32 You're good.
3:18:33 You're good.
3:18:33 We can move on to sauce number three, which is a white hot mustard sauce.
3:18:39 Yeah, I'm getting some heat.
3:18:47 I'm not going to lick my fingers on that one.
3:18:50 Have you observed anything interesting about the day-to-day life
3:18:53 of chickens tending to a coupe in your backyard?
3:18:55 like how would you describe their world as an outsider looking at?
3:18:59 They are simple creatures.
3:19:01 Um it's surprising to me how many people don't know
3:19:07 that if you don't have a rooster, you still get eggs.
3:19:11 I didn't know that.
3:19:15 Sean, what?
3:19:14 How does that work?
3:19:18 Okay, the eggs aren't fertilized if the rooster is not there,
3:19:21 but the chicken lays an egg almost every day.
3:19:24 So,
3:19:25 we don't have a rooster.
3:19:26 It's actually illegal where I live to have
3:19:28 a rooster because of the whole cockadoodle do thing.
3:19:31 The thing that's cool is watching them establish their pecking order.
3:19:34 They can be quite mean until they figure
3:19:36 that part out and then they just exist together.
3:19:39 I love having chickens.
3:19:41 I feel more bad about eating chickens.
3:19:45 Oh, right.
3:19:45 Like maybe I should switch the subject real quick.
3:19:53 It's definitely getting spicier.
3:19:56 So, take another bite.
3:19:58 Yeah, let's party.
3:19:59 That's what I'm talking about.
3:20:04 Mhm.
3:20:04 It's good.
3:20:05 It's not my typical flavor profile, but it's good.
3:20:09 I don't love mecow.
3:20:11 Yeah.
3:20:11 And this is a smoky sauce.
3:20:13 I I get Yeah, I get that connection.
3:20:15 I'm getting like a messcow vibe.
3:20:16 And unless it's like a perfectly balanced mezcow cocktail too.
3:20:21 It's like a band-aid going on.
3:20:24 I know like that rubbery.
3:20:26 I now I'm tasting a band-aid.
3:20:28 Okay.
3:20:29 Thanks for that.
3:20:29 But well, I'm tasting a lot of spice out of you.
3:20:31 So
3:20:32 that's true.
3:20:33 I'll meet you halfway.
3:20:35 So forgive me for not knowing,
3:20:36 but I was surprised to learn that you're
3:20:37 actually a New York Times bestselling author,
3:20:39 having published a supernatural trilogy for young adults.
3:20:44 Yeah.
3:20:44 I'm curious what your bookshelf looked like when
3:20:46 you were the age of your target reader.
3:20:47 Like were there authors or Twilight?
3:20:51 Twilight in was the absolute inspiration.
3:20:59 What's happening?
3:21:01 Um was like Lizzie Magcguire for people for me like you were
3:21:05 just like at that point in your life and you were like yes
3:21:09 somebody speaking exactly to me directly to me.
3:21:12 Yeah.
3:21:12 as an actress when you create a series like that is the idea of adapting it
3:21:17 into a TV or movie exciting or would
3:21:19 that puncture the fantasy or your intent in some way?
3:21:22 I think that is always at least for me because
3:21:25 I am an actress and like mostly a TV actress like
3:21:29 my mind goes TV show and not like no I
3:21:35 definitely would probably love to still produce a show like that.
3:21:37 I don't know if I would be in it
3:21:39 but there's just not enough time right now for me.
3:21:41 You're busy.
3:21:42 You're busy.
3:21:43 Yeah, I'm being I'm being a pop star right now.
3:21:47 And you're halfway through the Hot Ones gauntlet.
3:21:50 The accolades keep piling up over here.
3:21:52 My lips are burning.
3:21:54 Mine, too.
3:21:55 Okay.
3:21:55 Same wavelength, same page.
3:21:58 Okay, this next one is called Tropical Amaro.
3:22:00 If you're ready,
3:22:01 I feel like the font of this is trying to downplay.
3:22:06 It's undermining the heat, right?
3:22:08 It's trying to go tropical like you know
3:22:11 it's just a fun day on the beach.
3:22:12 Yeah.
3:22:13 It's probably a dirty rotten lie.
3:22:15 Okay, here we go.
3:22:21 Okay.
3:22:21 I don't like getting a weird bite of chicken.
3:22:23 It really ruins things for me.
3:22:29 Okay, I'm going to try again.
3:22:32 It's hot.
3:22:34 Yeah,
3:22:35 unfortunately that's how the show's formatted.
3:22:36 Are you like hoping for some water now or
3:22:40 if you are?
3:22:40 I don't know if you're baiting me or not.
3:22:42 All right.
3:22:44 But I'm ready whenever you're ready.
3:22:47 So, I've heard you say that when Lizzie Maguire got a locker
3:22:49 on the show that you felt like you finally got a locker.
3:22:52 Yeah.
3:22:52 Were there any other kind of normal kid
3:22:54 milestones that you experienced vicariously through your character?
3:22:59 Bra shopping.
3:23:02 Bra shopping.
3:23:04 Um, okay.
3:23:07 It's hot.
3:23:09 It's hot.
3:23:09 Um, I think a lot of the themes of Liz of the shows
3:23:15 of of the episodes were actually happening in my life as well.
3:23:19 Social dynamics and stuff within my friend groups outside of work.
3:23:25 Um, so I'm trying to think of one
3:23:29 in particular while this heat is permeating in my mouth.
3:23:34 Um, it's so nice to hear people's experience with the show
3:23:38 or like how it helped them or formed them,
3:23:41 whether it be like her style or not quite fitting in anywhere.
3:23:46 And I also kind of resonate with that.
3:23:49 I feel like a very big dork dressed in a cool girl's outfit.
3:23:54 a lot of the time.
3:24:00 I'm going to try to go really teeth here.
3:24:02 Okay.
3:24:02 Me, too.
3:24:04 Okay.
3:24:06 I screwed up on the first one.
3:24:08 Okay.
3:24:08 I'm kind of mid bite.
3:24:09 All right.
3:24:12 This is homegrown hell.
3:24:16 Mhm.
3:24:16 The literal eyes are like popping out of the dragon's head or whatever.
3:24:19 Staring right at you.
3:24:21 Yeah.
3:24:23 Mhm.
3:24:23 Did you take another bite?
3:24:25 I did.
3:24:25 You did?
3:24:27 I did.
3:24:29 The rabbit's got the rabbit's got the gun now.
3:24:31 Yeah.
3:24:36 What's it been like being like a pop star time traveler and going from the times
3:24:41 of like TRL and record store visits to then
3:24:45 like pop crave headlines and Tik Tok trends.
3:24:48 Like have you had any kind of like pop
3:24:50 star culture shock from jumping back in the pool?
3:24:55 Yeah, like the world of social media is a wild like
3:25:00 layer to add on top of entering the work space again.
3:25:05 The fact that I have many many memories
3:25:08 of being at TRL is a part of my personality.
3:25:12 There would be the there would be the same song
3:25:17 on the TRL charts for like weeks after weeks after weeks after weeks.
3:25:21 And can you imagine kids dealing with that kind of length day and age?
3:25:28 They'd be like, "Turn it over like more, more faster,
3:25:31 more less of like the same like you know, now it's just this." So,
3:25:35 like there's a definitely like a part of me that's just a little slowed
3:25:40 down and like likes living in that part of my past and being old.
3:25:44 Um, but also like loving a Tik Tok trend and
3:25:48 you've been busy on it.
3:25:49 I know.
3:25:50 I know.
3:25:51 Shout out Aaron.
3:25:52 Where are you?
3:25:52 Actually, in the building probably phone out, you know.
3:25:56 My hair and makeup also will they're dear friends of mine and they'll be like,
3:25:59 "This is the trend we're doing today." And I'm like, "Okay,
3:26:01 I'll do anything." I'm still a child actor inside wanting to please.
3:26:11 I'm going.
3:26:12 I'm going too.
3:26:15 I got a big bite.
3:26:16 Yeah, I saw that.
3:26:20 Textbook.
3:26:20 I got a big bite.
3:26:22 Kind of hitting me.
3:26:23 It is at this point.
3:26:25 Your eyes are glassy.
3:26:28 They are glassy.
3:26:31 Okay.
3:26:31 You want to go in for some water?
3:26:33 If you if you do if you do.
3:26:34 All right, let's go.
3:26:38 Check down.
3:26:45 I refuse.
3:26:46 I'm kidding.
3:26:47 Don't do it.
3:26:48 But does it make it worse?
3:26:51 It's just spreading it.
3:26:52 You know, they they say that, but psychologically
3:26:55 I always think like the ice water helps,
3:26:57 but I think it's all psychological.
3:26:59 This one's abusive.
3:27:00 Yeah, you might actually want to take a sip.
3:27:05 Okay, so I've heard you say that you like your steak very rare
3:27:08 to the point that friends won't even share with you when you're having one.
3:27:11 Can you give us the dos and don'ts,
3:27:14 the Hillary Duff dos and don'ts of making the perfect steak at home?
3:27:20 Mhm.
3:27:19 So, my mom I grew up with my mom and dad saying they like
3:27:25 their steak to where a good vet could get it back on its feet.
3:27:28 Isn't that horrifying?
3:27:32 I grew.
