State Dept. to REVOKE passports for THOUSANDS of parents who OWE CHILD SUPPORT | RISING
The Hill
0:05 Okay.
0:05 The State Department has announced they will begin revoking
0:08 the passports of parents who owe child support money.
0:11 A State Department official said in a statement, quote,
0:14 "We are expanding a common sense practice that's been proven effective
0:17 at getting those who owe child support to pay their debt.
0:21 Under President Trump and Secretary Rubio's leadership,
0:23 we're working across agency lines to ensure American
0:26 children receive the support they need and deserve.
0:29 Once parents resolve their debts,
0:31 they can once again enjoy the privilege of a US passport.
0:35 Under a federal law set in 1996, parents who owe more than $2500 in unpaid
0:41 child support are subject to having their passport revoked.
0:43 Now, the State Department told the AP that this latest
0:46 initiative will focus on those who owe $100,000 or more,
0:50 but that the initiative will soon be expanded to those who owe more than 2500.
0:55 Do it.
0:56 I'm here for it.
0:57 I'm 100% here for it.
0:58 you owe money for your children and you're not paying child support.
1:02 One, you're probably a scumbag.
1:03 And two, you shouldn't be traveling abroad.
1:05 You don't have the means.
1:06 If you can't be paying for your kids, you should not be going to Cancun.
1:10 You should be making sure that your kids have what they need to go to school.
1:14 I am all for this.
1:15 Absolutely.
1:16 I I I say expand it to the $2,500.
1:18 I know they got to roll it out and ramp it up and make sure it goes,
1:21 but if you're not paying your child support,
1:23 that means your kids are missing out on something.
1:24 And don't get me wrong,
1:25 if you need to go to court and you need to adjudicate it,
1:27 to have your monthly amounts changed because of financial hardship,
1:31 there are means to do that and make sure that this is not used
1:33 as retaliatory or inappropriately used against a parent
1:37 who maybe is in a financial hardship.
1:39 But I can tell you, you don't pay your child
1:41 support and you owe somebody child support, you scumbag.
1:44 You scumbag and you don't deserve to travel.
1:47 Listen, there's not going to be a lot of push back, I don't think,
1:48 for most people to think that somebody is chilling in Maldes but also not,
1:53 you know, paying for their kids.
1:54 So, that's obviously, you know,
1:56 going to be going without saying that most people would
1:58 support this, especially when you talk about that $100,000 threshold,
2:01 like how long and how much do you make to not be paying?
2:04 Like, how ridiculous of a person are you?
2:06 It's kind of like insane.
2:08 Um, I think that what has been effective about this from what
2:11 I saw is that once this was announced by the State Department,
2:13 a lot of people were fearful about the idea of it even happening.
2:16 It hasn't even like before it's even enacted, it started quickly paying.
2:20 So, that's a good result of this.
2:22 the thousands of people that were on it started quickly trying to figure
2:24 out how to pay before they get forced to get their passport taken away.
2:27 So they don't want their lifestyle ruined.
2:29 Yeah, I do think when you go down to the 2500 and again I
2:32 agree that people should pay their child
2:34 support should not be having lavish lifestyles.
2:36 But when you go down to owing 2500 like let's say
2:38 that could be like one or two months mispayments because you have no
2:41 job or financial hardship or even like in this economy some people
2:44 had long-term jobs that are getting
2:46 cut by different sectors changing in industries.
2:49 Then you can get in a situation where
2:50 now your passport is revoked and you're not
2:52 able to pay because you actually have not
2:54 been able to pay that 2500 could be low.
2:56 If you think about somebody making six figures,
2:58 let's say, who was out of work for 6 months.
3:00 So now if you missed three months of payments
3:03 because you had literally zero income and you're on unemployment,
3:06 then what is the strategy there to not take get your passport taken away?
3:09 Not that you need the passport to go travel,
3:11 but also with the new laws under the Save Act,
3:14 there's some issues with if you get your passport taken away,
3:16 you might need your ID actually for that second verification
3:20 that you guys want to make sure that you can vote.
3:23 So, I don't think people should be disenfranchised because they didn't pay child
3:27 support if it's a financial hardship.
3:29 Now, if you're banking on if you're having
3:31 a vacation in Cancun and owe 100 grand,
3:33 that's totally different than the person who missed
3:35 a payment and is missing $2,500 as the minimum threshold.
3:38 So courts are there for that adjudication process
3:40 to make sure if you fall in financial hardship
3:42 that you're able to not get completely destroyed
3:45 in your efforts to try to provide for your children.
3:47 So that adjudication process already exists in the family
3:50 court system in every state in this country.
3:52 And to your point about passports and voting, if you got your passport,
3:55 it means you have multiple forms of identification
3:57 that the federal government already agrees with.
3:58 So you'll be fine if you don't have it.
4:00 And if you live in a state like the great state of New York,
4:02 where we both grew up,
4:04 uh you can get something called an enhanced ID that even without your passport,
4:07 allows you to cross over into Canada with just
4:10 that driver's license now instead of having to have a passport.
4:13 So even if you needed to do it,
4:14 there's still ways to get out of the country legally without
4:17 a passport just based on some of these like locations like New York.
4:21 I mean, we grew up going across into Canada pretty frequently.
4:24 It's not that hard.
4:24 I grew up closer to Toronto than I did to New York City.
4:27 That's how big the state is.
4:28 But again, even if you're not,
4:30 if you're at that $2,500 level and it's, you know, you were out of work,
4:34 that's where you need to go back
4:34 to court to family court and adjudicate the process.
4:37 It doesn't mean you can just stop simply stop paying.
4:40 And I think that's where a lot of people get themselves tripped up,
4:43 not only in the judicial system,
4:44 but in the family court system in this country is to say,
4:47 well, I can't pay this, so I'm just not going to.
4:49 That's not how that works.
4:50 That is a court order that mandates you provide
4:54 to a certain level of care for your children, for your offspring.
4:57 And if you're unable to do that, then you go to the court again and say,
5:00 "I need to have an adjustment on this based
5:03 on where my financial situations are." Now, this is all completely possible.
5:06 They don't ha, nobody has to lose their passport if they pay the child support.
5:11 And if you decide to have a kid,
5:13 you got 18 years of making sure you do right by them financially.
5:16 And so, you know what?
5:17 If that's $2,500 and you're in financial hardship,
5:20 you've already been in the f the family court system once because
5:23 you had this process adjudicated for you to end up with child support.
5:26 So, you should know to how to be able to go back
5:27 and talk to the judge and say you need a financial hardship change there.
5:31 And so, like I even on the low end of that, I
5:34 can't even make the argument to say you lose your passport,
5:36 you're not going to be able to vote.
5:37 And listen, be glad I'm not an elected official because I feel so
5:40 strongly that you have to pay your child support that if you don't,
5:43 I think you should lose your right to vote until you get right with
5:46 you're going too far.
5:47 We can't we're not the moral executioner in this country and say,
5:50 "Okay, well, morally, you're not a good person."
5:52 THIS IS WHY I'M not an elected official.
5:54 THIS IS WHY I'M NOT an elected official
5:55 because I think you should pay child support.
5:57 No, you you have a passport.
5:58 I have a passport.
5:58 They last 10 years.
5:59 Just because I had the documents a decade ago to get my stuff in order.
6:02 Doesn't mean I have them.
6:03 It means you could do it again.
6:04 You did it once.
6:04 I got all I know.
6:05 I'm just saying I'm just argu I'm being I'm playing a little devil.
6:08 So just because I had those documents doesn't mean I have them again.
6:10 And then also let's say there's people who are
6:12 out of work that let's say did have a highle
6:14 job and you need some of that identification to get
6:17 the next opportunity and now we're taking it away.
6:19 So you might be taking away the opportunity for them to make more money.
6:22 Let's say you work good luck then good luck explaining to your employer
6:24 as a high netw worth individual why you
6:27 don't have a passport and the means to identify
6:29 yourself because you got behind on your child support
6:32 because of financial hardship.
6:33 People who make a lot of money can also have financial hardship.
6:35 And at that point you need to go to the court costs money, right?
6:38 Getting back and forth costs money.
6:40 Getting a good lawyer costs money.
6:42 They're not free things.
6:43 Well, neither is a child and neither is
6:44 being a responsible enough adult to decide if you
6:47 want to have intercourse with another person
6:48 that the outcome could lead to another person being bored.
6:51 And so all of this like, oh man, it could be so hard.
6:54 Raising kids ain't easy,
6:55 but having fun that one night might have stuck you with 18 years.
6:58 Pay your child support.
7:00 And this is also why I should not be an elected
7:01 official because I would be very mean to people who don't pay.
7:04 Again, I want to go on record and say I'm for this.
7:07 I think people should pay and should not
7:08 be gallivanting the globe if they're not paying.
7:11 I don't even I also don't think we should stop people's ability
7:15 to find new work which potentially could be an outcome of this or stop
7:19 their ability to uh have access to voting and other things
7:22 that a passport is needed because of this like they for example my daughter
7:29 was registering for school right she needs a passport and so some
7:33 jobs that are freelance you need a passport social security card so if
7:36 you misplace your social security card you need a PASSPORT SO NOW
7:39 YOU CAN'T EVEN WORK YOU CAN'T AT WHAT POINT DO WE SAY adult
7:43 we have to make sure that we're not responsible.
7:44 Okay.
7:45 You got to be responsible to keep
7:47 your stuff together and pay your child support.
7:49 Welcome to being an adult.
7:50 I can't or don't have kids.
7:52 Or don't or don't have kids.
7:53 There's so many options.
7:54 All right.
7:55 Coming up, former Vice President Kla Harris is reportedly
7:58 in favor of releasing the hidden 2024 DNC autopsy report.
