0:33 My guest today, of course, is Bob Odenkirk.

0:41 But Bob, yeah, it's all about Olive today.

0:44 It's all about my dog, Olive.

0:45 She doesn't know why there's so many people here.

0:47 It's because she's the perfect dog.

0:49 Yeah, she is.

0:52 They only made one of them and then they broke the mold.

1:02 Bob, I know an awful lot about you.

1:03 I don't know much about Olive, though.

1:05 Introduce me to Olive a little bit.

1:06 Well, Olive is 12 or so.

1:08 That's what we think [music] she is.

1:10 Um, we got her around 1 years old.

1:12 She has a little bit of staff terrier in her.

1:14 But you can see if you saw her next to a pit bull,

1:16 you'd go like, well, I don't think she's a pitbull, right?

1:19 [music] And she's calm and friendly.

1:21 She doesn't like all the equipment around.

1:23 That's what's freaking her out.

1:24 We we should say by the way you being very

1:26 kind Bob you've welcomed us to your home to Olive's home.

1:29 This is the greatest home and the option was to go to your place

1:33 or stay home and I'm like I'll always choose to stay at this home.

1:37 If you want to shoot a TV show here in this yard let's do that.

1:41 Okay.

1:41 Does I'll have friends out in the neighborhood.

1:43 Oh, she's got so many friends.

1:44 She's got friends that I don't know.

1:46 People I don't know know her.

1:48 People pull up in their cars when we're walking down the street.

1:52 Hey, I want to say hi to Olive.

1:54 She has so many friends who want to give her treats.

1:57 sounds like you're jealous of her a little bit.

1:59 [laughter] I'm I'm surprised.

2:00 She is a big celebrity in this neighborhood, I'll tell you.

2:04 Is she a food motivated dog?

2:05 She's not particularly motivated for food.

2:08 When you go to give her a treat, she's like, "No,

2:10 thank you." Unless another dog is there eating it and then she thinks,

2:14 "Well, I guess I want that." What do you think her perfect day would be?

2:18 Uh, three walks and visiting friends.

2:20 And also she would like me to be home.

2:22 You [music] know, in our business we're away

2:25 for weeks at a time, months at a time.

2:27 Yeah.

2:27 And I think it bums [music] her out.

2:29 She's the happiest at a holiday.

2:31 The whole family and then a bunch of friends over.

2:34 She loves that.

2:35 So every morning we come out and we

2:37 just clean out the eyes like [laughter] this.

2:39 And I just check to see if she still has a good hard snout.

2:43 Yep.

2:45 [laughter]

2:44 And then um all that silly stuff that you do to your dogs.

2:48 And then she um sheds a lot, you know, because uh you're in LA

2:53 and it's the middle of January.

2:57 Yeah.

2:56 So it's summer.

2:58 I hope that makes you hate us.

3:06 You know what's crazy?

3:07 Look at these treats.

3:08 These are like really high-end treats.

3:09 Okay, she's finally going for them.

3:12 Yeah, but not really.

3:13 See, she doesn't care.

3:15 Best treats in the world.

3:16 [music] Yeah, but won't eat them.

3:18 But how about another dog's five-day old sh

3:22 Yes.

3:22 [laughter] This is a real treat.

3:24 And Olive is clearly a sweetheart.

3:25 Tell me a little bit about the origin story.

3:27 So, where were you in your life?

3:28 I was shooting Better Call Saul.

3:30 My daughter had wanted a dog for a long time.

3:33 And [music] then Olive was just someone that my wife and daughter passed

3:37 by as they were visiting the shelter [music] and said hi to and said hi

3:41 to and then on their third visit they said well I don't know let's

3:45 go visit with her and the the staff there who had you know it

3:49 was a kill shelter and they were they had kept her alive because they

3:55 just kind of knew she was a great dog and they felt terrible though

3:59 no one had taken her for weeks and uh they walked her out and trotted

4:04 her around and she hung out with Naomi and Aaron [music] and they said,

4:08 "Uh, this is this is what we're looking for and brought her home.

4:11 She brought this warmth into our home.

4:14 It was perfect for us." Then becoming sort of my dog.

4:17 Well, I was going to say like I mean it's you talk about it

4:19 for the kids kind of at first and kind of an overall home thing,

4:21 but like you were obsessed with Olive in the most beautiful way possible.

4:26 Yeah.

4:26 So, what I what I was very surprised by was, you know,

4:29 people talk about dogs being able to sort of calm them and and comfort them.

4:35 So, look, you guys, playing Saul Goodman was that was

4:39 an insane thing to be offered and [music] to jump into.

4:44 Sure.

4:44 So, I'd done a lot of character roles.

4:45 I'd mostly been a writer.

4:47 That's how I made my living.

4:48 So to get this big acting job that also had challenge to it, real challenge,

4:54 I was just cooked when I came home from a season of shooting that.

4:58 And so hanging out with Olive sort of restored me.

5:02 [laughter] It really did.

5:04 I would take her to the dog park twice a day.

5:07 It would be twice a day and we'd have to drive.

5:09 But it was worth it, you know.

5:11 What are your favorite like unique quirks

5:12 about Olive that are [music] pure olive?

5:15 I'm going to just tell you something right now and I hope she doesn't hear it.

5:18 She's not the smartest dog.

5:20 [laughter] It's okay.

5:22 That ever walked on four legs.

5:24 She's so pretty, though.

5:25 She's pretty.

5:26 [laughter] She really loves people and always has.

5:30 So that's that's very curious.

5:32 It makes me wonder about her first year of life

5:35 and ending up in a shelter because like however cute she is,

5:39 can you imagine that in a puppy size?

5:41 Come on.

5:41 And then someone got rid of that?

5:43 I know.

5:43 I don't get it.

5:44 Do you have a a voice you talk to her in or is it

5:46 Sure I do.

5:47 [laughter] Bob, you got to go outside.

5:51 Come on, let's go for a walk.

5:55 We got to watch our enemies.

6:15 Pet me." you it just wouldn't be good.

6:27 So, I feel like most dog owners daydream about like

6:29 a product or service inspired by their love of dogs.

6:32 Do you have any that you've ever thought of that might be a good

6:35 Well, I wish there was an easy way

6:36 to clean their teeth like that they didn't hate.

6:40 I don't know how to do that, but Elon Musk, let's go to work.

6:44 Use that big brain of yours.

6:46 You claim to be able to do anything.
