BITTEN by a Venomous Snake!

0:21 I mean, look how far back it goes.

0:23 This is a pretty good example of somewhere that a copperhead might overwinter.

0:27 And this is also a good sign just

0:29 because there's not a snake underneath this rock.

0:31 There could easily be one pretty close by.

0:33 So, we need to keep our head on a swivel when walking around here.

0:36 But I feel like we're getting close to finding a copper head.

0:38 When it comes to venomous snakes in the United States,

0:41 you essentially looking at a handful of different species.

0:44 Rattlesnakes, of which there are many,

0:45 coral snakes, water moccasins, and copper heads.

0:48 Now, the copper head is the most common

0:51 venomous snake throughout the southeastern and eastern United States.

0:54 In fact, you're more likely to stumble upon a copper head

0:57 while hiking than any other venomous snake species that is out there.

1:00 And because of their camouflage, they are often going to be the best hidden.

1:05 And given the fact that they do not have a rattle,

1:07 they have no way to warn you before you might actually step on top of one.

2:04 So, what you'll notice so far is that the snake has not struck a single time.

2:54 And I don't think there's any chance that we're

2:56 going to have this snake ultimately striking at us, but it's worth an attempt.

3:04 So, go ahead and crouch down with it for a second.

3:06 And for context, the test we wanted to try

3:09 today was whether or not the copperhead would

3:11 bite at a snake proof bite boot or be

3:13 able to bite through snake bite proof gloves.

3:15 And so far, the snake has not even made an attempt to bite.

3:18 No.

3:18 And I'm not going to lie, when you went in to grab it,

3:21 you definitely put a little bit of pressure on the snake.

3:23 And right now, you kind of see the turn on this angle.

3:25 I'm squeezing the body just a little bit

3:27 to keep the snake in the position that it's in.

3:29 And it's still very reluctant to bite.

3:31 I mean, it's as far as copperheads go.

3:34 This little guy is definitely very active.

3:35 And that's a mix of, you know,

3:37 it being able to warm up in the sun for a little bit,

3:39 but also the smaller the snake is,

3:41 the more prone it is to just want to flee because it

3:44 knows that it does have potential predators out here in the environment.

3:47 But look at this right here.

3:48 This copperhead is very content in the spot that it's at.

3:51 It doesn't want anything to do with me.

3:52 What happens if you try to boop it on the nose?

3:54 Just like, you know, let's let's just show people that like this snake

3:57 is more interested in flight than it is fight.

3:59 Okay, I'm going to give it a little boop on the nose with my finger here.

6:29 That was a quick strike and definitely did not penetrate through the gloves.

6:37 I think I see a little bit of moisture on the tip there.

6:39 I see a droplet of venom right there.

6:41 That is frightening, dude.

6:42 That's right at the tip of my finger.

6:45 It It takes a lot for me to get nervous,

6:48 especially with a copperhead because this is a species

6:50 I've been working with since I was a little kid.

6:53 I've caught hundreds of these guys over the years,

6:55 but actually getting hands-on like this is

6:57 something that I have never done before.

6:59 I think it goes without saying,

7:01 never ever replicate what you're seeing us do here.

7:03 But guys, I just took two bites to my index

7:06 finger from a venomous copperhead snake and I am completely fine.

7:09 This is incredible.

7:10 But I it's still we've had this copper head for about 5 minutes now.

7:14 We've been very hands-on with it.

7:15 And it's not until I actually go in and boop it on the nose

7:18 that it goes in for a little bit of a warning bite.

7:20 And that just proves that point even more

7:22 that this snake does not want to strike.

7:24 Venom is such a precious resource to this snake.

7:27 It only wants to use it on potential prey items, not for predators like myself.

7:31 It's interesting that there was just a single droplet of venom,

7:34 but even a droplet of venom like that is a medical emergency for sure.

7:37 Any venom that enters your body is an immediate medical emergency.

7:41 Although the copperhead compared to its pit viper cousins like

7:44 the rattlesnakes and the cotton mouth has a much more mild venom,

7:48 fatalities are extremely rare from copperhead bites.

7:51 Still, it is extremely potent in the grand

7:53 scheme of things and will mess up your body.

7:56 Even a small drop could be a baby copper head.

7:58 It could be a full- grown adult.

8:22 Well, we know he's we know he's not going to be able

8:25 to bite through the boot if he can't bite through the glove.

8:28 And it is worth noting that this is a a smaller snake.

8:32 Copperheads do get bigger than this.

8:33 Yeah, this is definitely a semi adult.

8:35 I'd say probably in the 1 to 2 year uh age range.

8:39 See if you can kind of like uh curl them in a little bit.

8:46 That was I saw that.

8:47 That was biggest bite of the day.

8:49 And that was right on like the knuckle of my thumb.

8:52 Let me film that right there.

8:53 But it didn't penetrate.

8:54 It did not.

8:55 And if it did, I definitely would have felt the fangs going right into my skin.

8:59 I'm at the point where I fully trust these gloves.

9:02 But still, when I see the snake turn and actually strike,

9:06 my heart skips a beat because, like we said,

9:08 if any ounce of this venom gets inside of my body,

9:11 we are immediately cutting cameras and rushing to the hospital.
