0:28 I want to tell you about my incredible mom, Michelle.

0:31 We went through a tough time when I came out to her as gay in high school.

0:34 We live in a small town and she didn't know if people would accept my lifestyle.

0:38 Luckily, my mom adores you and your show and because of you,

0:40 she was able to accept me for who I am and we are now closer than ever.

0:44 My mother would freak out if she could meet you.

0:46 She's done so much for me.

0:47 I would love to help make her dream come true.

1:24 Um well, so this is a amazing story because

1:28 all you want is acceptance from your especially your family

1:31 and but that that was a hard thing for you to accept

1:34 when he first told you and why do you think that was?

1:37 Um I think it wasn't that, you know, it was him being gay.

1:40 I was more worried about what society and you know,

1:43 the hoops that he was going to have to go through with being gay.

1:46 Yeah, [snorts] no.

1:47 I didn't know you know, if that would help not you know,

1:49 him get a hard time getting a job.

1:52 Um but you know, regardless with this man's personality,

1:56 it's he's going to go a long way.

1:58 Yeah, well, that's that's important that I mean,

2:00 I think that is the parents feel sometimes it is like it's not who they wanted

2:04 their children to turn out to be and it's

2:06 your disappointment with yourself but for you it was

2:09 your your fear for him but but if more people did this then you wouldn't have

2:13 to worry about him in the world because

2:15 the world would accept all of us because we're everywhere.

2:20 [laughter]

2:19 I'm not worried about this man at all.

2:21 it's just that a lot of people don't come out but that's really cool.

2:24 So, did you struggle with how long did

2:26 you struggle before you decided to come out?

2:29 Um

2:30 [clears throat]

2:30 I think I I knew about it and struggled

2:32 with it probably for a good 4 to 5 years.

2:34 Mhm.

2:34 And the primary reason why I didn't want

2:36 to just like jump out and be like, "Yo, friends.

2:38 What's up?

2:38 I'm gay.

2:40 Gay as heck." but we were from a small town.

2:43 It's it wasn't normal.

2:44 I didn't have only any openly gay friends.

2:47 I had wonderful warm supportive friends but I

2:49 didn't know of anybody else that's done it before.

2:51 So, it's just like a very solid solitude solitary thing to do.

2:54 Right.

2:54 And so, it's just it was just too scary at Right.

2:56 Especially if you're gay as heck.

2:57 Yeah.

3:00 It's one thing to be gay but when you're gay as heck, it's it's risky.

3:05 [laughter]

3:06 Um So, Michelle, I know that you were most nervous about telling your dad.

3:10 Why is that?

3:11 Um my dad and I, we never had a real strong relationship and him

3:15 and I have never discussed sexuality or anything like that and um so,

3:22 I just told Bryton to give me some time for me

3:25 to to tell him and I tell you when I did, it was so unexpected.

3:29 I We were sitting at the kitchen table and I just said,

3:32 "Dad, I got to tell you something.

3:33 I said, Bryton is gay." And he just got up from the table and came over

3:37 and gave me a hug and he's not a hugging type of person and he just said,

3:42 "Michelle, I don't care if Bryton's gay because I love Bryton and I love Ellen.

3:46 I watch Ellen every day and she's gay so, I don't care." So, it was just Wow.

3:59 Hi, Dad.

4:00 What's his name?

4:01 Don.

4:01 Hi Hi, Don.

4:02 How are you?

4:04 What a great man you are, Don.

4:05 That's that's really cool.

4:07 Um did you understand her worry for you?

4:10 Um no, that's I think one of my largest regrets too

4:13 is because when when I when I came out my senior year,

4:16 it was very much like military like acceptance like everybody should love me.

4:19 Pride flag to the max waving it around.

4:22 Um if my family is as supportive and loving as they say they are,

4:24 they should completely accept me right from the bat and so

4:27 her initial reactions were definitely they were it was it was hard.

4:30 It was very very hard.

4:31 Well, that's amazing that that both of you

4:33 have come together and you're this close.

4:34 That's really that's it's a beautiful story and you raised him.

4:37 You were a single mom and made a lot of sacrifices.

4:40 We learned that you haven't had a real vacation.

4:44 So, Shutterfly wants to change that.

5:21 Your husband died away died 7 years ago of a May of 2012.

5:26 of a heart attack so that you're now a single mom of three kids.

5:31 They're beautiful.

5:32 Beautiful beautiful kids and you received this horrible um uh hateful [snorts]

5:41 uh attack on you and your children.

5:43 Really horrible.

5:44 We're not even going to You can say what some of the what he said.

5:47 Um he basically wished my children to be hung.

5:53 Um he wished us all to be dead.

5:58 Um said I wanted to be of another race that um just very vile things.

6:07 My first instinct was to protect them.

6:10 It was in the morning so, I shooed them out and

6:13 Cuz you didn't know if he was coming for you or know if he was in the area.

6:17 I had no idea where he was.

6:18 Okay, so how did you find then what did you do when you got this?

6:21 You called the police.

6:22 I called our local authorities and they took a report

6:26 which was fine but something just didn't sit right with me.

6:31 I got to work and I knew my kids

6:33 [clears throat] were safe but it just wasn't sitting well.

6:36 Right.

6:36 So, you're in New Jersey and you don't know where he is because he blocked you.

6:40 So, then I copied and pasted it onto my Facebook

6:45 and it was shared by a good friend of mine,

6:48 Jerome Henry and the they found out where

6:52 he was and he was in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky.

6:55 So, he's in Kentucky.

6:57 So, you decide to call the authorities in Kentucky.

7:01 I called Lawrenceburg,

7:02 Kentucky and they said it was a state police matter because I was

7:07 in New Jersey and I got patched through to Officer Satterly who was amazing.

7:14 He for lack of a better word,

7:17 he took it like he was investigating a threat on his own children.

7:22 And that's what I needed.

7:23 I needed I needed a dad.

7:25 I needed I needed a dad.

7:28 yeah.

7:29 I needed that other part of to protect them.

7:33 To yes.

7:33 So, cuz some people would have said like that person

7:36 said it's a state you're in a different state.

7:38 So, so what happens when they go after this guy?

7:42 They found him pulling out of his driveway with a Kevlar vest vest, a gun,

7:49 and 200 rounds of ammunition,

7:52 and a detailed attack plan of attack on the local schools out there.

7:58 So, You prevented a major attack on schools what they're telling me now.

8:07 [applause and cheering] I mean, You know,

8:16 [applause]

8:18 that's why with all the craziness that's going on in the world out

8:21 there with the the the recent events that have happened, there were signs.

8:25 All you have to do is look at what people are posting

8:27 and look at the hateful and and somebody that's when you see something,

8:31 you say something instead of everyone looking at it like there's nothing wrong.

8:34 something.

8:35 Was going to do anything to protect them.

8:36 But but good for you.

8:37 I mean, what an amazing mom, huh?

8:39 That she she doesn't just get scared and and and do

8:42 nothing but she goes after and and then prevents this Yeah,

8:46 I think that she's not just the people in Kentucky's hero but also our hero.

8:54 Good to have a hero as a mom.

8:57 [applause] Your mom's a hero.

8:58 All right.

8:59 So, and what is the the officer's

9:02 the trooper's name that was in Officer Satterly.

9:05 I mean, he he really Yeah.

9:07 He's my hero.

9:08 Let's bring him out then.

9:44 Well, this this is amazing that you that you took this seriously and decided

9:52 to to pay attention to this because a lot of people wouldn't have.

9:57 Um have a 2-year-old myself.

10:01 When I seen that message,

10:02 I thought there's no room for that kind of hate in this world.

10:06 Um I called Coverly and I could tell in her voice that she was very disturbed.

10:10 So, and uh I seen her Facebook of her three beautiful kids.

10:14 And I just felt like, you know, I owed it to her to help her.

10:26 SO, THERE'S SOMETHING you you came here to say to Coverly.

10:29 Um on behalf of the Kentucky State Police and the communities that I serve,

10:34 um we want to thank you for for making that phone call.

10:38 Um if you hadn't made that phone call,

10:39 things would have ended up a lot different.

10:41 Um [snorts] you're a hero in a lot of people's eyes and that in Lawrenceburg,

10:46 Anderson County, Kentucky, and Shelby County.

10:48 Um furthermore, the people of Anderson County are willing wanting you

10:52 to come down the end of November uh to our annual Christmas parade.

10:56 So, hopefully we can make that happen.

11:47 you guys have opened up a whole new chapter to organ donation.

11:51 It's just brings me to tears.

11:52 Like, we've reached millions and like me as a person,

11:55 I've only been able to reach like thousands.

11:57 I've had so many parents contact me that are going through our same journey.

12:02 Like, our journey to tell me that Zachary's

12:04 story has inspired them and given them hope.

12:08 It's a fantastic story.

12:11 I mean, [applause] OF COURSE, YOU KNOW,

12:16 people going through this would know this, but I didn't know this.

12:18 What a great thing that that you

12:20 can exchange even though your kidney didn't match,

12:22 you can exchange to for someone who yours matches and then

12:25 you get one from somebody else to to save your son.

12:28 What What a cool mom your mom is, huh?

12:31 Yeah, she's super She's super [cheering] cool.

14:02 How old is she?

14:04 Uh well, she was six.

14:05 All right.

14:05 First grade.

14:07 Well, you know what?

14:08 I think you would first identify like, "Wow, she's really attentive." [laughter]

14:13 You know, she's paying attention at home.

14:16 And then, I would, to be honest, seize the opportunity and go like,

14:20 "Maybe I'm also going to do things around the house that set a good

14:24 example." Not that that's not a good

14:25 example because unwinding is a fine example.

14:28 But, you could use it as like, you know,

14:30 you could just put out a bowl of broccoli and be like,

14:32 "Oh, god, this broccoli so good.

14:35 I love this broccoli." Like,

14:38 understand that she's paying attention and use it to your advantage.

14:41 My kid likes wine if that makes you feel any better.

14:43 Oh, so everybody's kid Yeah.

14:45 Everybody's My kids ask for O'Doul's at the dinner table.

14:49 Which I can't say no because it's like a strict honesty policy and I'm like,

14:52 "There's no alcohol in it." Because when we would walk with her at night,

14:55 my husband would hold an O'Doul's cuz he

14:57 likes O'Doul's and then she would grab it

14:59 when she was 6 months and by the time she was 12 months, she would hold it.

15:01 By the time she was a year and a half, she would drink it.

15:03 We'll sit down and make grilled cheeses and she'll be like, "Mom,

15:05 can you give me a beer?" I got no problem with it.

16:45 and I have a roof over my head, it's been just That is so sweet.

17:20 bit of free time to help uh the homeless in your community,

20:09 My mom is the most incredible mom.

20:11 [music] She's been a single mom for about 14 years now

20:15 and [music] recently took on a new child, which is my niece.

20:18 Maddie is my 16-year-old niece and she is my little sister now.

20:23 It's been hard for my mom to be a single mom.

20:26 I think I have an amazing family.

20:27 [music] Although it's not your typical all-American family,

20:31 it's the best one for [music] me.

20:34 My mom is the hardest worker I know.

20:36 Unfortunately, a year and a half ago she lost her job

20:39 and she's been looking for a job and has not yet found one.

20:44 My biggest dream for my mom is for her to just have confidence again.

20:48 I [music] feel like she's really lost that.

20:50 We know how great she is, but I feel like she doesn't.

21:01 [snorts] I decided to write in to Ellen over the summer,

21:03 the day that our microwave broke and I saw my mom um break down about it.

21:11 I'm sorry.

21:13 We had already had a broken grill.

21:15 Our refrigerator was leaking all over the floor.

21:17 Our [music] roof leaking and water coming from the ceiling down onto our floor.

21:22 I wrote in because I know how difficult of a time my mom's having

21:28 and I just thought anything to cheer her [music] up would be great for her.

21:32 The one time I see my mom smile is

21:35 when she's watching people's lives being changed on the Ellen

21:38 show and I've always thought how big her smile would

21:41 be if it was her whose life was being changed.

22:03 You're trying to find a job and what have you been doing?

22:17 Picking people up, bringing them to the airport for a few dollars.
