I Ran 7 Marathons in 7 Days on 7 Continents - Ep 2
Michelle Khare
0:00 I am attempting to run seven marathons on all seven continents in one week.
0:12 Because I wanted to see what kind of person
0:15 I could become by attempting something I think is impossible.
0:19 [music] In the last episode, I finished the first two races only narrowly
0:23 completing in Antarctica before the dreaded cut-off time.
0:27 Welcome to episode two of the Great World [music] Race,
0:30 where me and the 60 other racers are about to board a private jet to Perth,
0:36 Australia [music] for race number three.
0:38 And this is when everything changes.
0:44 Walking up to the plane is a bit surreal.
0:47 It's massive.
0:48 It's humongous.
0:50 What's the sex and sharing?
0:51 [music]
0:54 Come on, Chad.
0:54 Let's go.
0:56 Ready to lay down in this chair?
0:58 Getting on a PJ in your PJs.
0:59 Can't beat it.
1:00 It's like a party in the sky, honestly.
1:02 This is sort of like our cabin [music] in the sky
1:05 that we're going to be camping out in for the next six days.
1:09 Juice, I'm so happy.
1:11 [laughter]
1:11 Orange juice?
1:12 What the the champagne?
1:13 Proper hydration.
1:15 Chairs.
1:16 How long you guys been here?
1:16 You guys got slippers on.
1:20 [laughter]
1:19 At this point, we finished two marathons and the journey is about to begin.
1:25 Do [music] you think any of the marathons
1:26 are going to be harder than Antarctica?
1:28 I've heard Perth is supposed to be night.
1:30 You'll probably struggle with the heat.
1:32 Now knowing that this is going to be
1:33 [music] the biggest temperature jump of the entire race,
1:36 I need to make sure I recover as efficiently as possible.
1:40 The problem is we only have 9 hours until we land in Perth,
1:44 and the plane's resources are already being stretched thin,
1:47 like sharing only a couple bathrooms between [music] 60 runners.
1:52 About to land in Australia for marathon number three.
1:54 We I like 6 hours of sleep, and [music] I have five more races.
2:04 Folks, we're going to be starting in 10 minutes at the aid stations.
2:06 There's a small section assigned to everybody,
2:07 so you can bring out your gels and your recovery stuff, water, salt tablets.
2:11 Starting in 10 minutes.
2:13 Oh my god.
2:14 There's just like no time.
2:15 Oh, man.
2:17 That's how to be alive.
2:19 So, we're looking at 22 minutes.
2:21 Same as Cape Town, 25 to 30 minutes per loop.
2:25 And I also think one gel per loop to start with.
2:27 Just start slow cuz you're you're warming up, right?
2:29 You're warming [music] up.
2:30 Yeah, it's hot.
2:31 All right.
2:31 Brilliant.
2:31 We got We got this.
2:34 DK!
2:34 Let's go.
2:36 I genuinely cannot believe this is actually about to happen.
2:39 Like, it is so relentless.
2:42 Tarik is in his suit again.
2:44 How did How How does it look so good, too?
2:48 I'll see you very cold day yesterday.
2:50 A nice warm day for you today.
2:52 It is hot out there, okay?
2:54 Take it nice and relax in the first couple of laps.
2:56 Do not go into the red zone.
2:58 Plenty of sunscreen, water, and salt are your friends.
3:02 Take a salt tablet on every lap.
3:03 Good best of luck.
3:04 We'll get [music] you started.
3:05 Okay.
3:05 Let's go!
3:10 Three, two, one, go!
3:14 The Great World Race,
3:15 the event [music] arriving in Perth with racers braving the West Australian
3:19 sun only hours after arriving from the icy plains of the Antarctic.
3:24 First Cape [music] Town, then
3:25 Antarctica, now sunny Perth.
3:27 These runners are flying around the world.
3:29 Racers having to acclimatize [music] quickly to today's heat.
3:32 Only yesterday they were battling temperatures of -27° [music] with wind chill.
3:37 The race's most famous competitor, YouTube star Michelle Carey.
3:42 Breaking news.
3:43 Attempting seven marathons on all seven
3:45 continents in one week is extremely hard.
3:48 The media star happy to have arrived down under after the freezing conditions.
3:53 The first leg of this marathon series starts
3:55 here on Burswood Peninsula following a 3.5 km
3:58 loop going all the way up top the stadium and then back around for 12 laps.
4:04 Everybody starts off really strong, but nobody really was prepared for the heat.
4:19 I really feel like today.
4:21 Oh my god.
4:21 So you can see the fatigue.
4:22 [music] Everyone is honestly just beat.
4:24 Do we have any more Red Bull she can
4:25 actually drink for performance needs if she wants it now?
4:28 Okay, let's go.
4:28 Let's do this.
4:38 [screaming]
4:45 So you're on the table?
4:46 Oh, yeah.
4:47 What's going on?
4:49 I'm going to kill these guys.
4:50 What's your injury going on?
4:52 Uh-oh.
4:54 Yeah.
4:53 It was really, really bad on the table.
4:55 I noticed people starting to fall off.
4:59 Are you cramping?
5:00 Yeah, dude.
5:00 My legs are just cycling like I can't even run,
5:03 but the inside of my knee hurts pretty bad.
5:05 I've been paying attention to the two leaders,
5:07 Paul and David, and [music] David's walking and he looks miserable.
5:13 Come on, David.
5:14 Keep going.
5:15 Come on, DK.
5:17 Did you know he got a metal ankle this man in Peru?
5:21 He was doing an ultra.
5:22 I was in the middle of running this race across a portion of the Amazon.
5:27 It's called the Jungle Ultra.
5:28 It's always ranked one of the toughest ultras in the world.
5:31 I was coming down one of the steep
5:32 mountains and I ended up twisting my ankle sideways.
5:37 My bones were splaying out and it tore all of my ligaments.
5:41 I ended up having to camp out for 3
5:43 days before they could evacuate me out of the jungle.
5:46 Uh so two screws and a plate, but you know what?
5:48 We're going to send it.
6:01 [cheering]
6:06 Oh, man.
6:07 Oh, that's awesome.
6:09 I'll take that.
6:10 Oh, shoot.
6:11 How you doing?
6:12 I'm glad it's over.
6:14 Yeah.
6:14 It's not over for you.
6:15 I know.
6:15 I'm sorry.
6:16 I can't feel that bad for you.
6:17 You're always like 30 minutes ahead of me.
6:19 Or an hour.
6:21 You getting back up there?
6:22 You finished?
6:23 All right, mate.
6:25 I'll see.
6:25 Have you actually How many laps have you gone?
6:27 Yeah, yeah.
6:27 I got two more laps.
6:29 Two more laps?
6:29 You coming with?
6:32 I told you you can keep up.
6:33 Yeah.
6:34 [laughter] I actually Honestly, it's true.
6:35 It's true.
6:36 Here's Michelle.
6:44 My body feels completely depleted.
6:50 I haven't showered since Africa.
6:53 It's really hard in the middle of attempting an Everest [music] like
6:57 this to feel motivated for the final summit when you're only at base camp one.
7:04 And that's how this [music] feels.
7:06 Red Bull?
7:08 How is everyone still going?
7:10 You're not You're not last at all, brother.
7:11 You're doing fine.
7:15 [music]
7:14 Okay, bring bring it up there in terms of your mind now.
7:16 Just get into that good space.
7:19 Pretty much everybody is walking today.
7:21 I really support you in that.
7:23 Cuz we still have four more after this.
7:27 Oh, Jackie.
7:28 Come on, you got this.
7:30 Yeah.
7:29 So, I decide to walk.
7:32 And as I'm [music] walking,
7:33 just ahead of me I see someone who I think
7:35 is one of the most interesting runners [music] of this group.
7:39 Can I walk with you for a minute?
7:42 Sure.
7:43 Okay.
7:43 What's your name?
7:44 Michelle.
7:45 And yours?
7:46 Dan.
7:46 Say hi to the people.
7:47 Hey, hi.
7:49 My name is Dan Little from Madill, Oklahoma.
7:52 And this will actually be uh the fourth time I've done the Great World Race.
7:58 Dan, have you done this before?
8:01 This is my fourth time.
8:06 [laughter] I thought, there's no way that I can do seven marathons in 7 days,
8:10 but I tell my grandchildren, one of my favorite sayings is is fooey on fof.
8:18 F O F, fear of failure.
8:22 I will train, I will show up, I will do my best,
8:27 and my grandkids will then see that Poppy
8:32 uh even though he didn't get to finish,
8:35 it was a great experience, and it's it was fine to fail.
8:40 You know, lo and behold, I finished.
8:42 So, what advice do you have for me cuz I'm dying right now, Dan?
8:46 Okay.
8:47 My advice generally is start slowly, and then slow down.
8:55 [laughter] That's amazing.
8:56 82 or however old you are.
8:58 You're 82?
8:59 I'm 82.
9:01 I'll be 83 next week.
9:02 So, you're a [music] Scorpio.
9:06 Maybe.
9:06 [laughter] I'll take your word for it.
9:10 Dan Little is a legend, icon.
9:13 Dan is pretty much out there the entirety of every single day.
9:19 [music]
9:18 So, he is pretty much last man on course.
9:20 He's showing what's actually possible when you put your mind
9:25 and your heart and your soul [music] into something.
9:27 It's just amazing what we humans can do,
9:31 particularly when we join together, and you know, and support each other.
9:36 I mean, the best thing I ever did,
9:37 the luckiest thing I ever did, um was was to marry Prudence.
9:43 In addition to being brilliant [music] and beautiful,
9:45 Prudence was mentally and emotionally a 10.
9:49 She fought four primary cancers for 35 years,
9:54 but she was so brave that those 35 years were 35 wonderful years.
10:02 So, even though we were fighting four primary cancers,
10:06 it just made us appreciate each and every day so much more.
10:15 Yes.
10:15 I'm really [music] privileged to get to challenge
10:17 myself all the time and grow from it,
10:20 but I find the most joy in completing a project,
10:23 [music] crossing the finish line.
10:28 Come on, here we go.
10:29 Here we go, Michelle.
10:30 Uh even if I fail at a challenge, just wrapping it up and completing it,
10:35 but I've never really been good at finding the joy in the pain to get there.
10:42 So, today I really wanted to try and find that.
10:52 [music] That's number three.
10:52 Well done.
10:55 I got to walk with Dan, and he was [music] just amazing.
10:59 This is his fourth time doing the Great Wall Race.
11:04 And he told me just about this beautiful life he
11:07 [music] had with his wife before she passed from cancer.
11:11 How are you doing, Dan?
11:12 Ready to go.
11:13 Almost finished.
11:15 Okay.
11:16 Keep going.
11:17 I've got one more.
11:18 He is out here walking,
11:20 and he spends the most time moving compared to anyone else.
11:26 And so, it's just really inspiring to see someone who
11:30 spends the most time on the have such a positive attitude.
11:34 I have really always loved Perth, Australia.
11:40 And up until this year, we'd always run it at night time.
11:45 It was superb.
11:47 It was superb.
11:48 But if you were slow enough, you would get to see the sunrise over the river.
11:53 [music] But somebody's got to be the oldest and the slowest,
11:57 and I'm proud to be it.
12:01 Dan!
12:00 Congratulations!
12:03 That was so amazing.
12:07 What?
12:07 You're incredible.
12:10 day.
12:09 A [laughter] fun day.
12:12 going?
12:12 You really got me through a rough patch I was having, so thank you.
12:20 [music]
12:31 Living on this plane for the past several days has been quite the adventure.
12:37 Um because it means we're getting ready in airplane bathrooms.
12:44 Jay thing.
12:46 We're stretching in the aisles.
12:48 We're mixing our drinks in the flight attendant catering area.
12:53 And none of our is charging, and it looks like this.
12:58 It's kind of like [music] camping in a way.
13:01 Like we're on a big old school field trip,
13:03 all sleeping in the same room together.
13:06 There is no privacy,
13:07 [music] but also there's a lot of camaraderie, which is really special.
13:12 Good morning, everyone.
13:14 Thanks for your attention.
13:15 This is Tark, your tux-wearing, crazy runner.
13:19 I have a poster at the No Humans Allowed that we're going to pass around.
13:24 I grabbed the speaker, and I got everyone's attention, and I [music] said,
13:28 "I'd like for you to put your your bib number and one
13:32 motivational sentence." I wanted to create something that everybody could touch.
13:38 I wanted something to take home and to be able to share and and connect with.
13:43 Surround yourself with relentless humans and climb together.
13:45 Stefanie.
13:47 You did.
13:47 What do you think?
13:48 That really resonates.
13:52 Roberta.
13:51 Everything is easy after [music] Antarctica.
13:54 I agree with that.
13:56 I wrote, "What a privilege it is to be challenged." [music] [music] [music]
14:09 We're in Abu Dhabi, I guess.
14:11 What day is it?
14:12 What time is it?
14:12 Where am I?
14:13 I barely know.
14:15 We're going to have like 20 minutes
14:16 to change and then immediately [music] get outside.
14:19 And it's going to be another really hot race.
14:23 [music] I was in a cast like 2 months ago.
14:26 You going to sign my cast?
14:29 [laughter]
14:29 When I posted on social media that [music] I was
14:32 doing this, I was really excited to do it because our
14:37 [music]
14:37 community, like the challenge accepting community,
14:38 who you've seen come to the events now,
14:42 Yes.
14:41 is really amazing and supportive.
14:43 Like really, really lucky.
14:46 [music] But the Tik Tok I posted went viral exterior to our community.
14:51 Ah.
14:50 And so all of the comments,
14:51 thousands of comments, are "You're [music] actively hurting yourself.
14:55 This is irresponsible." Like, you know, several comments that are like,
14:59 "I'm a registered nurse and [music] you're going to get rhabdomyolysis." Nick,
15:04 what does your watch say today?
15:05 My watch is telling [music] me rest.
15:07 No workout due to excessive fatigue.
15:09 Oh my god.
15:11 It was kind of discouraging because I [music]
15:13 had wanted to post to our community to share
15:16 with them what I was doing and also selfishly
15:18 [music] receive support cuz I was scared about this.
15:21 And so I I sometimes feel like when I'm out there and I'm struggling
15:25 or going slower or [music] people are
15:27 passing me that I'm just proving them right.
15:30 Yeah, the comments on that Tik Tok thing are often just driven by jealousy.
15:33 So you when you're running you're going to focus [music] on your community,
15:37 what it means to them.
15:39 Can I say hi?
15:40 Oh my gosh.
15:41 It's my absolute pleasure to come and see you.
15:42 Oh my gosh.
15:44 Wait, what's your name?
15:46 I'm Gina.
15:47 Gina, it's so nice to meet you.
15:48 Thank you so much for coming.
15:50 You're you're you're superwoman.
15:52 Oh my gosh.
15:53 Can I take a picture with you?
15:54 Of course.
15:55 When people come [music] out to see
15:56 her it really lifts her, makes her so joyful.
16:00 Yay!
16:00 That's when she gets back into ah, this [music] is the difference I'm making.
16:04 These people care.
16:05 This is where the love really is.
16:07 And these are the people whose lives she's making a difference to.
16:10 Race four is underway,
16:12 but the compounding fatigue of three marathons and the desert
16:15 heat is really starting to beat everyone down.
16:18 I'm going so slow.
16:20 So hot.
16:22 God, I'm sweating so much.
16:24 Ugh.
16:25 Woo!
16:26 These conditions are crazy for everything, [music] everything.
16:29 Oh man, this is this is crazy today.
16:31 However, once [music] I hit mile 13,
16:34 I will officially be halfway done with the Great Wall Race,
16:38 which will be a huge psychological boost.
16:41 So I take Dan Little's advice and I go slow and then I go even slower.
16:46 And I just feel myself fading out and separating from the rest of the group.
16:52 Paul, you got your shot?
16:54 Yeah.
16:53 You feeling okay?
16:56 Yeah.
16:55 All right.
16:57 This uh slog today.
16:59 It's not a doubt.
17:01 How you doing?
17:03 How are you?
17:04 I'm good.
17:05 Every Every bit of my weight.
17:09 Yeah, I suppose I'm not built for running.
17:11 Um definitely don't have the physique of a runner.
17:13 I like me food and I like me drink and my name is Adrian.
17:19 [music] I'm from Sligo in Ireland and I've never actually run a marathon before.
17:22 Did you say you were originally just going to do halves?
17:27 Yeah.
17:26 And you've done all marathons.
17:28 Well, I guess I run a few now, so I have.
17:30 You see people like yourself, Michelle, and you know, why wouldn't I?
17:35 After meeting Adrian, [music] I had the wackiest marathon of my life.
17:40 I feel like I'm on a hysterical right now.
17:41 You remember when we ran in two marathons without showering?
17:46 [laughter] What?
17:47 I don't know.
17:48 I don't want to go to church.
17:50 They're spraying on THE AISLES.
17:51 FRESHENER.
17:54 [laughter] IT'S JUST HITTING me how insane this has been.
17:57 The reason Abu Dhabi was probably the most I have laughed in years.
18:02 This is a guy who sells life insurance [music] in Sligo, Ireland.
18:07 So, you're from a town with only 60,000 people in Ireland.
18:12 About that, yeah.
18:13 Wow.
18:13 The city I grew up in was pretty small, too, like 100,000.
18:16 What's it called?
18:19 Shreveport.
18:20 Shreveport?
18:21 Louisiana.
18:22 And what do your parents do?
18:23 My dad is a physician.
18:26 Has it ever been interesting becoming a doctor?
18:30 Yeah.
18:30 Most of my childhood I did competitive science fair,
18:33 AP classes, my whole life through college.
18:39 Every minute of my day was about optimizing for whatever my future was.
18:48 It was never about the now.
18:52 And that consumed your whole life.
18:53 Yeah.
18:54 I think I I think a lot about the finish line and I want to enjoy these moments.
18:59 Like, this is hard, it hurts,
19:04 [music]
19:03 and what is the beauty of that?
19:06 Well, pay no attention to me, Michelle.
19:07 Remember we were at the last river.
19:18 Yeah, that one there.
19:19 So, I remember that day clearly like that was kind of probably
19:23 be one of the worst days that I can I can remember.
19:26 My son, AJ, um who was born with Trisomy 18, Edward syndrome,
19:32 and passed away after 17 wonderful days together as a family unit of of six.
19:39 In that moment, you know, Adrian sitting there [music] thinking this these are
19:43 my last moments with with our son.
19:45 When Adrian looks back to that and thinks of, you know,
19:48 his hardest and darkest [music] moments, he got through it.
19:53 Um and that's what is always in the back
19:57 [music] of his mind when he has any challenge.
19:59 If I got through that, if we survived that, well, then I'll survive anything.
20:07 When we're reunited with them again,
20:09 [music] we want to be able to tell him about
20:11 all of the things that he inspired us to do.
20:15 We don't want to be limited by grief.
20:18 Of course, grief [music] crippled us for, you know,
20:21 a time and and the waves still crash, they hit,
20:24 but we hope [music] one day we get to tell him all
20:27 of the things that we've done in our lifetime because he existed.
20:35 Adrian has saved my life today.
20:37 No, we're on our own.
20:43 As as the race progressed, I I was in a lot of pain.
20:47 I got to 17, 18 miles, my knee was starting to [music] flare up again.
20:54 I'm in a lot of pain right now.
20:56 I already took a bunch of medicine.
20:57 Maybe if it was the last one, I could definitely like grind through,
21:00 but having three more [music] just coming off a major surgery,
21:03 I was like, you know what?
21:04 I think it's time for me to take a shift to stop here.
21:08 Done done.
21:09 I think I'm out, man.
21:10 I'm bummed.
21:12 Me?
21:12 Dude.
21:13 Dude.
21:16 Great job.
21:18 Great job.
21:18 Breaks my
21:19 What happened?
21:19 He's out?
21:21 I think so.
21:22 I mean, it truly breaks my heart.
21:26 No.
21:27 Did you hear that?
21:27 Adrian, did you hear that?
21:29 David dropped out of the race.
21:33 It's really hard to to come to grips and to to make that final decision,
21:38 just because of I feel like internal
21:40 [music] and external factors of pressure for yourself,
21:44 for the work that you've done, uh expectations people have of you.
21:48 Looking good though, man.
21:48 New suit.
21:50 New suit, new you.
21:51 But you know what?
21:52 That's uh
21:53 [music] I feel like a big part about being a professional
21:55 about anything is you have to make hard decisions,
21:58 and you have to be secure uh in the decisions that you're
22:01 making because you know that they're [music] uh the right ones for you.
22:05 And the right ones for uh the future.
22:10 Let's go, Michelle!
22:12 Woo!
22:13 [cheering]
22:14 Damn.
22:15 [applause]
22:14 What's going on?
22:16 I'm done.
22:17 My knee's just busted.
22:19 Keep it up.
22:20 You got this.
22:21 You look so strong.
22:25 New you for you, Dave.
22:27 New you for you.
22:29 Jail time.
22:30 Yes, sir.
22:31 Joel and Adrian?
22:32 Uh I'm all right.
22:33 Okay.
22:33 He says.
22:35 [laughter] Fair.
22:37 Certainly great work, great work.
22:38 You get that one though.
22:41 My waiting.
22:43 Doesn't matter like how much fun you're having.
22:46 Marathon just sneaks up out of nowhere and punches you in the [music] face.
22:50 I think we need to retitle this video.
22:53 Called I got punched in the face seven times on seven continents in seven days.
23:00 One punch each.
23:02 [laughter]
23:03 Seven punches.
23:04 It's true.
23:06 At the beginning of today, I was not doing well.
23:08 [music] I was like there is conceptually, physically, mentally no way.
23:14 And then Adrian caught up to me and we
23:16 ended up spending most [music] of the entire race together.
23:20 You got a shower and you finished strong.
23:22 You too.
23:23 You keep going.
23:23 Yes, sir.
23:25 And we genuinely like laughed our asses off and had a really fun time.
23:29 And you know, that's what I was seeking,
23:32 to find the joy in the pain as [music] it's happening.
23:35 And I I do believe that Adrian and I found that today.
23:40 Four!
23:41 Let's go!
23:44 [music]
23:45 Yeah!
23:48 [cheering]
23:50 Oh!
23:51 Yeah.
23:51 Congratulations, you earned it today.
23:52 You put that on my mic collage from the week.
23:57 [laughter] You know, today was a much needed emotional win.
24:00 I got to spend most of my day with Adrian.
24:03 It certainly was a privilege to dig deep with him.
24:06 I don't know do I help her as much as she thinks I did.
24:09 I thought it was a combination of an effort because
24:11 Michelle is someone that definitely um was inspiring to me
24:15 and gave me the real belief that I was going
24:17 to go on and finish the full the full seven marathons.
24:20 Let's go, Adrian!
24:21 For Ireland!
24:24 Let's go, Adrian!
24:26 Let's go!
24:31 [music]
24:31 That was probably the turning point where
24:32 I felt that about the halfway mark here,
24:35 we'll do this, you know, we'll do this whether we have to walk,
24:38 crawl, cry over the line, whatever the case is.
24:45 How did you find it?
24:45 I find it.
24:46 It was awesome because of you!
24:49 Yes, well done.
24:59 [music]
24:58 Another day and marathon.
25:01 We're back at it again, Portugal, number five.
25:04 Today's objective, enjoy the scenery, have a great time.
25:09 It's all about camaraderie.
25:10 We're almost to the finish line in Miami,
25:12 but more importantly, let's get this done.
25:14 Made it.
25:16 Who is this for?
25:18 Me.
25:18 Well, hello future Dan.
25:21 [laughter] The local school kids were out the national anthem was being sung.
25:24 You know, if that can't get you fired up, I don't think anything would.
25:27 We have a runner with the suit.
25:28 Wow.
25:33 [music] It was so amazing to see how supportive the community was.
25:39 Even people [music] like David Gilgore who could have
25:41 flown home and he's still here cheering people on.
25:49 Just run like 2:20 for a half.
25:51 I mean, that's [music] the fastest she's been running all week.
25:53 I mean, it's a great day out here.
25:54 I think just the the crowd and the energy,
25:56 too, it's like got a lot of the runners excited.
25:58 I feel like somebody famous.
26:02 [music] [cheering] [applause]
26:10 It's a good day.
26:12 I have no idea how I feel this way.
26:16 But it just makes sense.
26:17 He did it in 6:07.
26:20 6:07.
26:21 [cheering]
26:23 JUST PAST HALFWAY.
26:25 13.2 miles, 2:17.
26:28 2 hours 17 minutes.
26:31 Perfect weather, perfect conditions, [music] and man, is it motivating.
26:35 P, I'm wishing myself to the back of this suit jacket.
26:40 It's the turning point.
26:42 Either you're doing this or you're not doing it.
26:43 And if you can get through five, [music] you can see Miami.
26:48 You're crossing it today.
26:49 So are you.
26:50 You know, because you do so many laps back and forth,
26:54 you get the chance to meet a lot of people.
26:58 It's a great bonding experience.
27:00 You know, maybe it's misery loves company,
27:03 but it's pretty amazing how meaningful
27:06 the conversations can become with, you know,
27:08 pretty much complete strangers.
27:11 I've never gotten to hear your story.
27:13 I was on a roof building [music] for work and I fell 26 ft headfirst.
27:18 He fell through a roof onto the ground like [music]
27:22 four stories up and had no business being at the race,
27:26 much less running a race.
27:28 I got plates in both wrists, fractured my whole face,
27:33 [music]
27:33 five vertebrae, and MCLs in both knees.
27:37 I've no business being alive.
27:39 At 6'6", he's not a runner.
27:41 He's not a runner's build.
27:43 He came out and he crushed it.
27:45 So, that accident impacted how you view challenges in life.
27:50 You know, you can take the negatives from everything or you can find a positive.
27:55 Sharing these stories in Portugal is really [music] when
27:57 it started feeling like we were becoming a family.
28:01 Find your happy place.
28:01 Where's your happy place?
28:02 My happy place is going to the [music] pool with Garrett.
28:06 That's Garrett.
28:06 That's my husband.
28:07 I don't know if you guys have even met met him there yesterday.
28:09 Yeah.
28:10 What's yours?
28:11 What's mine?
28:13 Yeah.
28:13 Wife and kids.
28:15 Yes.
28:15 Oh, when I run, fire on.
28:17 Feet up.
28:19 Everyone obviously had their own individual story [music]
28:22 and you know, we were maybe going through a time where you're thinking,
28:25 what am I doing this for?
28:25 Why am I doing it?
28:26 You just have to look to your left,
28:27 you look to your right and there was someone there fighting on, so they were.
28:31 Yeah, we're running to rescue girls out of human trafficking.
28:34 Wow.
28:34 It's running for freedom [music] and our goal is to raise half a million dollars
28:36 to rescue girls to protect the vulnerable from being trafficked.
28:40 $400 can rescue a girl.
28:43 $400.
28:43 I would like to make a donation.
28:45 Oh, really?
28:47 Yes.
28:46 So, he said it's $400 per individual saved.
28:50 I would like to pledge 10.
28:54 Oh.
28:53 So, $4,000.
28:55 I got chills.
28:57 Yeah.
28:57 Oh, my gosh.
28:58 Why not?
28:59 That's why we're here.
29:00 That's incredible.
29:01 There are a lot of runners [music] and a lot of important
29:03 causes and I've linked to all of their causes in the description below.
29:07 I encourage you to donate [music] to any that speak to you.
29:10 The more time that I spend with these people,
29:12 the more I realize that [music] it's not a team sport,
29:16 per se, but it really is a team accomplishment and that's really,
29:20 [music] really special to have such an amazing
29:23 community of people who are willing to try
29:25 something this crazy and people who are willing
29:28 to help each other cross these finish lines.
29:33 And I'm realizing it's not about, can I pull [music] off this challenge?
29:37 It's, can we pull off this challenge?
29:43 [music] 50 miles.
29:49 The perspective is again that the girl who just
29:51 sort of walked through here is a 3:30 [music] marathoner.
29:55 Michelle's in the middle of her final lap.
29:57 It's like Michelle's actually just getting stronger, [music] right?
29:59 I mean, it's so impressive.
30:00 I'm thrilled for her and for what this means
30:04 for anyone who's ever doubted her cuz this girl is strong.
30:08 Never in a million years could I've ever thought I could do five marathons
30:11 in [music] a row and I think a lot of other people doubted I could do.
30:16 But, you know what?
30:17 Too bad for my haters.
30:19 Woke up today and I'm about to finish [music] my fifth marathon.
30:25 [cheering] [screaming] 4:42 for a marathon.
30:42 4 hours 42.
30:43 Do you realize what you just done?
30:45 Fastest marathon.
30:46 Fastest time on the fifth one.
30:49 Okay, so Michelle, tell me, on the fifth time,
30:51 does it get any better or it's hard anyways?
30:53 It [music] remains hard all the time.
30:56 But what I think gets better is the community and the camaraderie.
31:00 Today I was very fortunate to get my best time out of all five of the marathons
31:04 [music] and I think that the energy
31:06 of the people here and uh just [music] how beautiful
31:10 everything was it really lifted our spirits.
31:12 Good job, Michelle.
31:13 Thank you so much, Michelle.
31:14 Thank you.
31:15 Thank you.
31:17 Thank you so much.
31:18 Fastest time on the fifth one.
31:21 Yeah.
31:21 Balling out.
31:22 I'm learning from [music] the best how to ball out.
31:26 Thanks.
31:26 [laughter] Next time on the finale of the great world race.
31:31 The toughest marathon is actually number six.
31:34 This silent killer is marathon number six and that's in Cartagena, Colombia.
31:40 You know, this is the one that tests your character probably the most.
31:42 Two people last year ended up
31:44 in the hospital from heatstroke and heat exhaustion.
31:47 Nobody said to you you had heatstroke last year.
31:50 What the heck?
31:53 Yeah.
31:53 Michelle is in a dark place right now.
31:55 Let's go!
31:57 And on top of all of that, my period just started.
32:02 This is the grand conclusion of seven months of training.
32:05 I don't think I fully believe in myself.
32:07 Seven grueling marathons.
32:09 Like this is really so hard.
32:11 And the seven craziest days of my life.
32:14 So always always have more to give.
32:17 Always.
32:21 [music] [music] [music] Oh.
