Singer's New DLS Turbo: Wildest 911 Restomod Ever! | 4K

Top Gear

0:00 This is Singer's DLS Turbo, and it's got a very cool party trick.

0:05 So, let's start with that, shall we?

0:11 How about that?

0:12 From road to race in about an hour, actually.

0:16 But, you wanted to see underneath it, didn't you?

0:19 So, let's rewind.

0:22 Now, we will get on to driving the DLS Turbo,

0:27 [music]

0:25 both on road with the ducktail back end,

0:30 and on track wearing that outrageous loop rear wing.

0:36 What a thing.

0:40 But, in this film, we're also going to show

0:42 you around every detail of the stunning cabin,

0:45 Yeah, we're going to be quite happy moving this around, I think.

0:48 interview the men behind the car,

0:49 There's no what are we going to do next moments.

0:53 And yes, skid it about a bit.

1:01 But, right now, we're going to have a deep dive

1:03 into the car itself to show you all the good bits.

1:10 So, here we are with the car all undressed and ready for us

1:13 to go and have a good inspect of, but we're not going to start there.

1:16 We're going to start over here, where, as you can see,

1:20 everything is laid out for us because if you buy a DLS Turbo,

1:24 you can choose to have it in road mode or track mode.

1:28 Or, if you want to, you can have both.

1:31 And if you do that and pay the extra money,

1:33 you get a whole load of flight cases with the other bits in them.

1:37 So, we can now have a good inspect.

1:38 We've got all the bits together,

1:39 so we can sort of see show you the differences between them.

1:42 So, here we have the road front bumper, which you can see, it looks big.

1:47 You've got a lot of air flow into here, and you've got a shallow splitter here,

1:52 nice and rubberized, so it is scuffs and stuff.

1:55 And then here, you've got the track bumper and as you

1:58 can see already it's much deeper at the front

2:01 splitter to help improve balance out the arrow and then

2:05 you've got a lot more intakes up here as well.

2:09 Now they need to balance out the arrow because

2:11 look at the difference in the two rear wings.

2:13 There's your ducktail and this absolute monster here of the loop

2:19 rear wing which is also manually adjustable for downforce angle.

2:24 So I know what you're thinking.

2:25 You're thinking tell you what would be quite fun.

2:27 I could put the road bumper with my track rear wing.

2:32 You can't.

2:32 The car's too clever for you.

2:33 It thinks you might do that and if you try and mix and match car won't start.

2:39 There you go.

2:40 Simple isn't it?

2:40 That's you done.

2:42 And then we come over here and you also get two sets of wheels and tires.

2:48 So they're all magnesium.

2:50 Those are road wheels and these ones here are

2:54 track wheels like an old fashioned BBS style 70s wheel.

2:59 Very cool indeed.

3:01 Right, back over here.

3:04 For the DLS Turbo this is where it's all about.

3:07 So the standard DLS, the old DLS had a 4 L naturally aspirated engine.

3:13 Now we're down we're down shorter stroke 3.8 with big turbos

3:18 on it and the turbos this engine bay is so tightly packaged.

3:22 I mean look, you can see how little space there is in here.

3:25 The turbos are out in the wings.

3:27 They're right out and kept away because the biggest problem that they

3:30 had with this car was the packaging and the cooling of it.

3:35 So with the DLS it was an air cooled engine.

3:38 They kept it as pure as they could like that.

3:41 This one they've had to go to water cooled heads.

3:44 Still four valve heads.

3:46 Keep the turbos out the way,

3:48 get the heat cooling in through that and then the central fan

3:52 which on the DLS was belt driven from the from the car,

3:56 is now electrically driven and it pulls the air down through the engine.

3:59 So, you've got all of this stuff going on in here

4:02 and then just the flat-6 tucked right down there.

4:06 I mean, a proper engine though.

4:07 It's 710 horsepower, 750 Newton meters of torque at 4 and 1/2 thousand RPM.

4:13 It revs at peak power is like eight, it revs to over nine.

4:18 I mean, this is going to feel pretty good on the road, isn't it?

4:21 And then gearbox in there, six-speed manual.

4:24 We like a bit of that, don't we?

4:25 This time it's done by Ricardo.

4:27 It was a Hewland box for the DLS.

4:31 The change was needed because of the turbo's massive extra torque,

4:35 getting on for double the DLS's.

4:38 Plus, there's a Sachs clutch capable of handling 1,300 Newton meters.

4:44 [music]

4:43 Every intake is maximized either for cooling or getting air into the engine.

4:48 And the exhausts, well, like the TVR Sagaris,

4:52 remember that, they exit out the side.

4:56 [music] But, when you come into here, you've still got a traditional Porsche.

5:00 This is I mean, it is still a Porsche 911.

5:03 You've still got a trailing arm rear axle in there.

5:06 And yes, you've got beautiful bits of componentry.

5:09 You've got Brembo's top level carbon ceramic brakes,

5:13 dampers by XTC, the same people who did them for the [music]

5:16 for the regular DLS as well.

5:18 And then we'll walk it from the down the car,

5:20 but just look at the size of everything.

5:22 It's an absolute monster.

5:23 [music] There is a 911 tucked under here.

5:26 You can still see the shape.

5:27 And then you've got these monstrous great side pods on it.

5:30 I mean, it's like a foot wider either side.

5:33 Oh, don't trip over anything.

5:34 That'd be helpful, wouldn't it?

5:36 And then down here, you've got the same as the DLS.

5:38 It is set up similarly.

5:40 The changes they've had to make to all of this is

5:43 mainly because you've got a lot of weight distribution difference.

5:47 The car's heavier than a DLS and it's got more

5:50 of that weight is at the back now than at the front,

5:52 but you've still got, like the DLS, [music]

5:55 double wishbone front suspension and then all

5:58 the other trick bits going on in there.

6:01 Which include dampers with remote adjustment and enough

6:04 extra strengthening to the chassis to make it

6:06 almost twice [music] as rigid as the regular

6:08 DLS and four times stiffer than an original 964.

6:13 And also, the other thing it's lost,

6:16 it's got no luggage space under here at all.

6:19 The DLS did.

6:21 This doesn't.

6:22 It's just they've had to give it all over to cooling.

6:24 So, just like Porsche's current GT3 RS, where they lost their luggage space,

6:30 Singer has had to do the same thing

6:32 in modifying this old 911 to make it the same.

6:36 I mean, the lengths they've gone to here, it's just unbelievable, isn't it?

6:43 [music] Enough indoor stuff.

6:47 Let's get the DLS Turbo out into the open.

6:52 This is more like it, isn't it?

6:53 Look at this.

6:53 Look at the scenery out here.

6:54 The road, nice and twisty.

6:56 And then the DLS T.

6:58 I mean, what a preposterously hunky car that is.

7:03 It's all large, isn't it?

7:04 It's fabulously good looking.

7:06 Do you like the way they've mated the orange

7:08 detailing here to match the road surface pretty much.

7:12 But look at this, right.

7:13 First thing, okay.

7:16 Just the way that door opens and closes.

7:20 Love it.

7:21 Right, shall we?

7:24 Love this.

7:26 Right now, before we get going,

7:28 I want to give you the full sort of guided tour to the Singer's cabin,

7:31 because like the exterior, this interior, it's just it's so perfect in the way,

7:38 cuz it is an old Porsche 911.

7:40 So, it's super simple in here,

7:43 and you can have these super ornate with, you know,

7:46 tartan and gold leaf and whatever else you want.

7:49 This one, though, is just sporty.

7:51 It's just dark and simple and clean.

7:55 I don't know how I'd spec mine.

7:56 I think I'd probably go a little bit more than this, but not overly more.

8:01 Still detectably an old 911 in here.

8:03 Look, the windscreen feels quite upright and close to you.

8:06 The steering's just here.

8:07 It's very slightly offset.

8:10 And the pedals are just lovely and down the footwell.

8:13 But, they um the steering it'd be nice if it had a bit of adjustment.

8:16 It doesn't, but I'm pretty happy as it is.

8:19 And then you've got just these some of the old 911 bits.

8:21 This the tactility of the window winder.

8:25 I suspect it has taken them quite a long

8:28 time to get that action right on the window winder,

8:31 and it's just a it's just an indicator of the efforts that Singer

8:35 go to when they're modifying one of these to make it perfect.

8:40 And then you've got the old-style 911 bits here.

8:42 So, you got the heating controls.

8:44 And again, they are so tactile in the way they operate here.

8:48 And then a little row of four buttons, which is like your demister,

8:52 your nose lift, the hazard lights, and the rear fog.

8:57 And then apart from that, you've got a mode dial here.

8:59 And the mode dial's quite cool.

9:01 It uses the last binacle here, and you've got five different modes from weather,

9:07 normal, sport, track, and then everything off.

9:11 And that's quite cool.

9:12 It's been developed by Bosch, so they really know what they're on about.

9:16 And then the gear lever, which just feels Yeah,

9:19 we're going to be quite happy moving this around, I think.

9:22 Yeah, feels pretty good.

9:24 And exposed linkage, look at that.

9:26 Wicked.

9:26 Right.

9:27 I think we're going to fire it up and get going.

9:35 Yeah, that sounds pretty good.

9:36 I think we should have a go.

9:38 Wait, no, no.

9:39 I can do this better.

9:40 If I turn off I need to start it with the door open and if I

9:46 go with the ignition on, go into sport mode so I just need to turn it.

9:51 So, I get into sport mode like that and then I start it with the door open.

10:02 That's more like it.

10:04 How good does that sound?

10:06 Yeah, if you start it in sport mode you

10:08 get the baffles open on the exhaust straight away.

10:12 Right.

10:13 Off we go.

10:15 And how good does that sound?

10:21 This doesn't feel like a DLS.

10:24 The DLS is very light and nimble and accurate and very high rev.

10:30 This feels like a heavier car in some ways.

10:34 It's still light.

10:35 It's what?

10:35 1350 kilos.

10:38 But, you're aware of there's a difference in the balance of it

10:42 because there's less weight on the front and more on the back.

10:44 More turbos, loads more cooling in the back.

10:47 The weight distribution's moved backwards and that means

10:50 that you've got quite a lot going on back there.

10:54 And if you close the throttle mid-corner oh, you do notice it.

11:01 Yeah, you feel it move off line and just go, "Yep,

11:04 I'm an old 911 still." But, the experience they were going for was F40.

11:15 Ferrari F40.

11:16 That's the car they had in mind while they were developing it.

11:20 Because, yeah, I don't I don't think

11:23 turbos have ever been more exciting than that.

11:26 So, yeah, the experience they wanted was classic turbocharged Ferrari.

11:31 High boost manual car, lots of excitement, but better driveability.

11:37 They didn't want it to feel like all or nothing and really a bit scary.

11:42 So, the most impressive thing for me, I think,

11:45 is the engine response, because even when you're driving around at mid-range,

11:51 mid-throttle, not doing too much,

11:54 as soon as you get on the throttle, there is amazing response.

11:59 And then, normally, turbocharged cars then have a pause

12:04 for breath as they gather themselves before they punch.

12:08 And yet, this, it just doesn't.

12:11 So, if I slow it down, look, down at sort of 2,500 revs,

12:14 and I've got amazing response just through my foot, and then I get on it.

12:22 There's no girding of the loins, it just goes.

12:31 That engine response,

12:33 the management of that, is absolutely exceptional, I think.

12:39 [music] But there is a bit of weight in the experience.

12:41 I like that.

12:41 I like the fact, because it is a heavier,

12:44 more boisterous car than a regular DLS.

12:47 It feels very different to drive.

12:49 The engine noise is more guttural.

12:51 There's a lot more weight in the steering and the pedals.

12:56 It does flow down a road, but sort of it just wants to tear it apart.

13:10 The front, you can tell it's old 911,

13:12 and it bobs around a little bit, but the damping,

13:16 especially at the back,

13:17 where it's got more weight to deal with, just feels so perfectly sorted.

13:26 So, what's the main takeaway here?

13:27 Well, it's just the whole car's sense of occasion,

13:31 this sort of astonishing sort of richness and texture

13:35 to the experience that you just you don't get in modern cars.

13:39 And in a way, it's because of the car's deficiencies.

13:41 This is still a car on trailing arm rear suspension,

13:44 and you have to be slightly cautious with it.

13:48 You can't just take liberties with it all the time,

13:51 especially with this sledgehammer of power

13:54 and the weight distribution out the back.

13:57 So, you might not end up traveling that fast in it.

14:00 It just doesn't matter,

14:01 because the sense of occasion to driving it is

14:04 just it's so rich and so rewarding to drive.

14:10 You can kid yourself that you're driving a narrow car,

14:13 that you're driving a classic 911, and it's all dainty and little.

14:18 And then you look in your rearview mirror, and all you've got is arch.

14:22 You can't go trying to snaffle apexes when

14:24 the back wheels are going to be in the ditch.

14:28 I mean, I just can't imagine this is going to be

14:30 any better to drive on a track than it is out here.

14:35 But, I don't have to imagine that.

14:37 Time to let the DLS Turbo loose in full [music] track spec,

14:41 including that massive rear wing.

14:44 And for that, we headed over to Willow Springs race circuit.

14:52 [music] [music]

15:03 DLS Turbo at whoop Willow Springs, then.

15:08 A very different Willow Springs to how I've ever seen it before,

15:11 in that there's been quite a lot of rain today,

15:15 and the track is still Well, they don't really do run off and drainage here,

15:19 because hey, they don't get much rain.

15:21 But anyway, shall we have a little look and see what the DLS Turbo's like?

15:29 [laughter] So, it's got all the ingredients to be a complete monster.

15:37 It's got the weight distribution of a mallet.

15:40 It's got enormous 345 width rear tires and fairly skinny 265s at the front.

15:50 And it's got 710 horsepower and 750

15:55 Newton meters of torque pushing about 1350 kilos.

16:00 It's I mean, it's a recipe to absolutely bite your arm off, isn't it?

16:11 However, this is Singer we're talking about and I think

16:15 it's always you get with Singer sometimes you just think oh,

16:18 but it's all about the cosmetics and everything else and you sort of take

16:23 it for granted a bit that you're just looking at a very pretty Porsche.

16:28 And yet, you're really not.

16:31 This thing is a very serious and very engaging driver's car.

16:38 And listen to how it sounds.

16:40 It's really guttural and deep this noise.

16:51 You do have to manage it though.

16:53 If you're just trying to get too greedy with the throttle early in the corner,

16:57 it will just understeer out the other side.

16:59 It'll understeer on the way in if you don't

17:01 keep that nose pressured all the way to the apex.

17:06 But, it's a proper old school 911.

17:08 Don't forget that.

17:09 It's on trailing arm suspension and when you get if you get a bit busy with it,

17:15 you know, it will have you.

17:18 And the clutch is a little bit fighty.

17:19 This one is a development car and it's worked really hard in its time.

17:25 The way it rides all these bumps and things around

17:28 here and these edges and the cambers and the curbs,

17:32 it's really impressive.

17:33 And oh, the brakes are fantastic.

17:36 Floor hinge pedals, all the weighting of everything,

17:40 there's just a lovely flow to it.

17:47 All right, let's see if we can do a little bit of a skid down here, shall we?

17:57 You shouldn't be able to do this in a 700 horsepower 964, should you?

18:05 What a thing.

18:11 And this is the secret to this DLS Turbo, that it's this huge, scary thing.

18:18 And yet, when you start tickling it, it's not that scary.

18:23 It's It's got all the teeth and the the intimidation factor of it,

18:29 but when you properly get on it,

18:32 you discover that it's actually really friendly.

18:35 The engine management is like the suspension where you think, "Oh,

18:39 I think this is going to just eat me alive." And then it doesn't.

18:43 And the engine's the same.

18:44 You've got The way you can roll on and off

18:47 the throttle and it'll adjust the line so intimately.

18:53 And yet, you've also got such good roll on performance.

18:58 So, you come out of a corner and there's no lag.

19:00 There's no no delay.

19:01 No nothing.

19:02 It just eats the ground.

19:04 It's just I mean, this is proper big boy performance.

19:28 Oh, it's so exciting.

19:29 It starts to bring you out in a sweat.

19:31 It's like proper adrenaline rush.

19:42 Really good.

19:43 Ah, look at it go.

19:45 I really love it.

19:56 [music]

19:55 Bit blown away by it,

19:56 and I know that Singer and other restomods don't have to obey

20:01 the same rules as big manufacturers building

20:03 cars from scratch with all the legislation.

20:06 But once again, just like with the Kimera 37 that we gave

20:11 our performance car of the year to, you wonder where cars are going wrong,

20:16 and you can see it clearly cuz you get in stuff like this, which is so exciting,

20:22 so enthralling, so busy when you're driving it.

20:26 And this is what you want.

20:28 This is it.

20:30 God, it's a shame you got to pay 3

20:31 million quid [music] nearly to have it, isn't it?

20:41 [laughter] Oh, it's got so much shove.

20:41 I love it.

20:48 Singer is going to convert 99 old 964s to DLS Turbo specification.

20:54 The average cost of which is around $2.9 million.

20:58 Want the flight cases?

20:59 Of course you do.

21:01 Depending on paint and finish, that'll be roughly another $175,000.

21:08 [music] Just don't forget the loop spoiler isn't

21:09 road legal in many countries, including the UK.

21:13 But, it is a faithful sympathetic nod back to Porsche's race history.

21:18 Specifically, the 934/5 racer that was so successful in the late '70s.

21:27 If you love old Porsches for their honest simplicity and purity,

21:30 you are probably going to hate [music] this.

21:33 This is a Porsche 911 turned up to, well, 11.

21:37 It's pumped, it's daft, it's OTT,

21:39 [music] and it's very different from the regular DLS.

21:43 Make what you will of the way it looks and whether

21:46 you [music] think Singer has gone too far with it.

21:48 But, to drive, it is addictive.

21:51 You think [music] it's going to be as ferocious and scary as an old Le Mans car,

21:55 but actually it's just a big friendly monster.

21:57 [music] But, what about the men behind the machine?

22:03 We sat down with chief strategy officer Maz Fawaz and founder

22:08 Rob Dickinson to get their take on where the company is now.

22:13 Okay, fellas, we'll come on to talk about why we

22:16 seem to be sat in a cocktail bar at a racetrack.

22:19 But, first of all, I want to know how much more can you do with a 964?

22:24 We've had classic studies, DLS Turbo, now we've got Carrera coupe and cabrio.

22:30 Yeah.

22:30 What else can you do with a 964?

22:32 It's a good question, very good question.

22:35 Quite a bit, actually.

22:36 I mean, there's a as we've I think as we've

22:38 gone through the last what was it, 17 years of 16.

22:43 16, 17 years of figuring this car out.

22:46 As you say, we've we've we've touched we've gone here,

22:49 we've gone there, we've gone there.

22:50 As you can imagine, there's a huge amount of learning has come from that.

22:54 And as we know, the nuance of cars is where the magic is,

22:57 and there is there are areas that that haven't touched yet.

23:01 And that we're we're exploring that still might that that are

23:03 still honoring the 964 that I don't think we've quite put that

23:10 Okay.

23:10 that overused curated I don't think we've

23:11 curated the the every single meaningful um group

23:18 of stuff together in terms of refinement

23:21 uh lightweight performance agility ability to you know,

23:25 go a long way in the car without getting annoyed with it.

23:29 Yeah.

23:31 Um that's that's so we are giving that some thought and of course

23:34 we're thinking about things a little bit further along as well.

23:37 So so we we are we are aware but there

23:40 is we we are there is an abundance of ideas.

23:44 Let's put it that way.

23:45 So you're not short of ideas.

23:45 [laughter] How far ahead do you plan?

23:49 Cuz goodness.

23:51 Yeah.

23:51 Now we're now we're uh uh about 6 years out.

23:55 Yeah.

23:57 Yeah.

23:56 And in terms of sales now, how many have you built?

24:01 600 600 cars and you but you're now building them at quite a rate.

24:04 You built 150 cars last year.

24:06 Yeah, the plan uh so this year it's a 26th the plan is almost 180.

24:13 Really?

24:11 Um but we're sold out for 4 4 years over 4 years.

24:15 I think what's worth perhaps stressing is that there's

24:18 no what are we going to do next.

24:22 Yes.

24:22 There's so much that me and him want to do and there's

24:25 so much that uh we think I mean I and we're

24:28 well aware of potential singer as well a little bit you

24:32 know 911 fatigue from us because we keep we we keep

24:36 But do you not do you not get bored of just thinking about 964s?

24:40 Do you not think it we ought to do a 928 or we ought to go for another brand?

24:43 Do you take yourself out there out there somewhere else?

24:47 No, we we we are keeping ourselves

24:49 uh thoroughly stimulated by thinking about other things.

24:52 [laughter] Let's put it let's put it let's put it that way.

24:54 other thing is we we learn so much.

24:56 So when you go through these iterations and we

25:00 are our capabilities uh um increase and improve.

25:04 You just you learn new tricks and new There's new

25:06 opportunities that show up in the middle of doing this one.

25:08 Well, we could And you might apply something to you know to the next one.

25:12 So, you're almost continuously developing the next thing.

25:16 Um you know, it's a matter of experience.

25:17 And you're making new friends and you're getting wonderful

25:21 opportunities to drive other people's cars and you think, "Oh, what about mm So,

25:26 there's lots of lots of like that that that that we

25:28 have an up we have quite a lot of opportunities as you

25:30 can imagine and and um we are investigating them all with massive

25:35 enthusiasm and we're we're we're we're like kids in a candy store.

25:39 We don't We don't know how we've kind of got here,

25:40 but people take us a little bit seriously, you know,

25:44 and and and that opens doors to to for us

25:47 to to to to satisfy our ambitions and the cars that we

25:53 want on our driveway and and that is me and him

25:57 that's that's that's the way Singer has to operate unfortunately or fortunately.

26:02 It seems we've gone quite well so far,

26:03 but it it we're we're making cars for ourselves.

26:06 Yeah.

26:06 And it's Porsche, right?

26:07 I mean, I think for for us it

26:10 was always Porsche written big and Singer written small.

26:12 Whereas for most others it's look how great we are we just happen to be working

26:19 with a Porsche 911 because that's what that's

26:22 what Singer do or or or or whatever.

26:26 Yeah.

26:25 I didn't start this company to start a resto mod company.

26:28 I started this company to celebrate Porsche's heritage.

26:31 Full stop.

26:33 Through the Porsche 911 which I had fallen in love

26:35 with in various for various various moments in my life and I

26:40 knew in my heart that if I could only have one

26:42 car it would have to be a very special Porsche 911.

26:45 That is not That doesn't seem to be the uh dare I say it

26:50 honorable principled starting point for a lot

26:53 of new companies that have sprung up.

26:55 And I think I think they've seen a a business opportunity.

26:59 Yeah.

26:58 I'm not a businessman.

26:59 And my I didn't set this company up to be a businessman.

27:03 Mate, he's shaking his head.

27:04 Slowly [laughter] slowly There's a lot of reasons I became friends with him.

27:09 Um but um it was it was just because I had to do it.

27:13 And um and now there's an industry.

27:18 Yeah.

27:17 And probably we're a bit we're we're we're

27:18 somewhat part of causing that, which is fantastic.

27:24 Well, we don't like being called restomodders.

27:25 I'll put it that way.

27:26 But of course, that's what are.

27:29 Yeah.

27:29 Because rest rest we we you know, restored, reimagined, reborn.

27:32 Reimagined has become the term, hasn't it?

27:35 That was I dreamt that up in 2007.

27:38 Restored, reimagined.

27:39 And I thought, that's brilliant.

27:41 That absolutely gets to the point of what we're doing.

27:45 And now it's become this term

27:46 that which which seems to everyone's reimagining things,

27:49 which is which is which is great, terrific.

27:52 Um but we do see ourselves and again, not wanting to sound too bloody pompous.

28:00 Singer is a philosophy.

28:02 It's a philosophy of if it ain't going to be the best,

28:05 we're not going to bother to do it.

28:06 It we strive to to do something extremely well in every corner of the car.

28:13 This everything is important thing which I scrolled on the wall years ago.

28:16 I keep I keep battling with that because it's

28:19 a it's a very silly phrase in some in some ways,

28:22 but in some some ways it does get to the the marrow of the bone

28:26 as to what the head space that me

28:28 and him are in, where it has to be spectacular.

28:30 It just has to be magnificent everywhere.

28:33 And if we can't pick up the phone and persuade the right people

28:35 to help us be magnificent because we cannot do it on our own.

28:40 Yeah.

28:40 And put the right teams together, we won't bother.

28:42 And that is a philosophy.

28:44 And that we've applied that heavily to the most important

28:47 sports car in the world and it's gone quite well.

28:50 Um can that philosophy go elsewhere?

28:52 Of course it can.

28:53 And you don't have to be a rocket science to scientist to know well if

28:56 those two guys have got that kind of head

28:57 space and they're thinking about things so clearly,

29:00 my god, the world's in this fabulous moment we have in car

29:04 culture at the moment where we're it's revolutionary, is it electric?

29:08 Is it electric?

29:08 Is it not?

29:09 Is it this?

29:10 Is it digital?

29:10 Is it analog?

29:12 What a fantastic time to be alive and passionate about cars

29:15 and what an what an enormous opportunity me and Maz have

29:19 to to take this thing that was started somewhat by accident um

29:25 and take it to the take it to the moon, you know?

29:28 And then that's the goal.

29:30 Mhm.

29:29 Just to create fabulous that we all desperately want.

29:33 [laughter] Yeah.

29:34 So okay, outside of cars then,

29:37 last year you bought Willow Springs race track in partnership.

29:43 Partnership.

29:42 So what's the plan here?

29:44 What what was the thinking of you pur- purchasing

29:48 a race track or being involved in a race track?

29:50 Bringing Southern California a race track was sort of the top of the list.

29:54 Of course our opportunity at the at the track is

29:57 in there as well that we have our own facility.

30:00 Um uh you know, a house and garage and lifts and so on.

30:04 So we can go and you know he and I can go drive.

30:08 Uh our our team can bring, you know, customers.

30:11 We can sort of, you know,

30:13 bring Singer to the circuit in a you know, in a permanent way.

30:16 Yes, it is on that.

30:17 And then of course it's you just there's a there's

30:18 a whole of course much broader business plan around it which is,

30:22 you know, which is which is smart business.

30:25 Yeah.

30:25 Obviously.

30:26 And and as part of that then you're going

30:28 to have to build a load of infrastructure here,

30:29 buildings and lounges and stuff like the one we're in.

30:33 Is Singer getting going to get involved in design aesthetics?

30:36 You going to do furniture design?

30:38 Architecture?

30:39 What's next?

30:40 Well, we we we certainly have an opinion as you

30:42 can imagine but no, I mean I'm I'm No.

30:50 [laughter] I mean I think we'll both stand up we'll stand to one side

30:57 and let people who are experts in it suggest things and we'll probably curate.

31:05 Yeah, that's overused word, isn't it?

31:07 But we would but but no, I I I don't think so.

31:09 I just don't I just don't have the bandwidth to be honest with you.

31:12 Well, also there's could my design department expand?

31:15 Yes, it could.

31:16 Do I want it to?

31:17 Not really.

31:19 What does it mean to you for that Goodwood has come

31:22 and said featured you're going to be the featured mark this year?

31:28 Bonkers.

31:30 Yeah.

31:29 I I just just just startling it it it's it's it's like it's like a bit of a

31:36 [laughter] it's like a bit of imposter syndrome a little bit.

31:38 Whatever we have become and whatever we are has been

31:42 a huge part Goodwood has been a huge part of it.

31:44 So so in in that way it's quite appropriate

31:47 but to be on the sculpture with you know,

31:51 with all the people have been on it before is just and it's just

31:56 kind of humbling really and I hope I hope we can get away with it.

32:02 [laughter] Excellent.

32:04 Rob, Maz, thank you both very much.

32:06 That's been really good.
