‘SO POOR FROM TEL!’ 😡 Have Tottenham OPENED the door for West Ham to potentially STAY UP? 🤔| ESPN FC
ESPN UK
0:00 And the match would finish 1-1.
0:02 Spurs pegged back with that leads penalty from Dominic Calbert Lewin.
0:08 They are two points ahead of West Ham after 36 games played now and they
0:13 are not in the bottom three as it stands with two games left to play.
0:17 Stuart Robson was watching this game for us as well.
0:20 What stood out to you Stuart in this one?
0:21 I suppose Spurs will be upset that they didn't get the win
0:24 but a points are points still at this stage of the season.
0:29 It is, but this is a game they wanted to win.
0:32 This is the game that I think could have kept them safe.
0:33 I know there's six points still to play for, but this was
0:35 the game that would have put West Ham under lots of pressure.
0:38 And for until scored the goal, the game was very tepid.
0:42 Neither side played particularly well.
0:44 Spurs didn't play with the energy that I thought they might play with.
0:46 There was no understanding of how they were
0:48 going to get the ball from back to front.
0:49 When they did go from back to front quite quickly,
0:52 they didn't win the first ball.
0:53 The midfield players weren't pressing.
0:55 when they tried to play out from the back,
0:56 there was a lot of rotation and they didn't seem to know how to they were
0:58 going to get it from from there
1:00 into the midfield and then into the front players.
1:02 It was a very poor first 50 minutes,
1:03 but it all changed with the with the penalty
1:06 and the equalizer that last 20 minutes or so.
1:08 It was uh some good football.
1:10 There was a it was played with a passion.
1:12 It was played with a bit of tempo
1:13 and in the end probably be just about the right result.
1:16 One all but it's not I don't think good enough for Spurs
1:18 because they got I think two tough games coming up now.
1:21 Just before I bring it back into studio, Robo,
1:23 because we heard that both of the guys agreed with the leads penalty there.
1:26 Are you on the same page as these two?
1:30 Absolutely.
1:30 Tell it's it's a it's a terrible mistake by Tel because first of all,
1:33 the ball's up in the air for a long time.
1:35 And and Stevie said, you know, he he didn't see anybody around.
1:37 Wasn't aware.
1:38 He needs to be aware.
1:39 He needs to have a little look over his shoulder, see what's coming.
1:41 He didn't do that.
1:42 And once he saw that that that uh the center the center
1:45 midfield player was going to jump and go for the ball,
1:47 he's got to try and head it.
1:48 He's got to head it away.
1:50 That's the That's the only thing he could do by doing a bicycle kick.
1:53 There was there was only going to be one outcome and that was a penalty.
1:56 It was the right decision in the end.
1:58 It was Ethan Emperoo.
1:59 You said it straight away as well, Sh.
2:01 Yeah, it was a penalty and and and no question.
2:03 And then to to the point, why why does Tel try to go for a bicycle there?
2:08 This is a Premier League.
2:08 The game is far too quick to expect a ball to drop in the box from that height.
2:12 Um lesson learned for for for Matas.
2:15 It may prove to be a very costly lesson in terms
2:18 of what happened between now and the end of the season,
2:20 but that I I it was a it was an awful decision to start with.
2:24 Then though I have to say,
2:26 why does it take us as long as it does for VR to to come to that conclusion?
2:31 You could see that with one replay.
2:34 Stevie and I were sitting there,
2:35 you saw one replay and it was as clear apparently as ever.
2:40 But for some reason, and and I do not understand why this has to be,
2:45 VR looks at at at it from about three different angles,
2:49 four maybe five replays from each angle
2:52 to then tell the referee, go to the monitor.
2:55 And as a result, everybody's standing around for god knows how long.
3:00 We have 13 minutes added on the end of the game.
3:04 These are the things that I think that are most frustrating about VR.
3:08 I know we'll have a whole lot of conversations about VR and its impacts,
3:12 but these are the things I think that um force
3:16 people to question VR and what they're doing and and why.
3:22 Let's get to the other penalty that wasn't James
3:25 Madison brought down very late on by well Meta,
3:28 but you said it straight away, Stevie,
3:30 with this one that had been that slight touch on the ball.
3:32 Yeah.
3:33 And as I said, when you watch the replay and and and to be fair to the referee,
3:37 he's called it straight away because at the time
3:40 I thought it was a penalty and then I'm thinking,
3:42 well, it's Madison, so you know he's going to go down.
3:44 But then when you see the false replay and you watch the path of the ball,
3:48 it does change when the defender puts his leg
3:51 out and it does move the path of the ball.
3:53 And so, yeah, it's a it's an incredible first time spot from the referee,
3:57 but it is the right decision.
3:59 Here's the running then for the relegation battle.
4:01 Obviously it is Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham
4:05 in 17th and 18th as it stands right now.
4:07 Next up for Spurs at Chelsea on May 19th and then
4:12 it's Everton for the final game of the season for West Ham.
4:15 They're away to Newcastle on May 17th and then
4:18 it's Leads on May 24th to round things out.
4:21 What stands out to you here Stuart?
4:25 Well, Chelsea away has always been a tough place for Spurs to go and I
4:29 thought after their game against Aston Villa
4:30 when they played some really good football,
4:32 they looked to have an understanding, there was some combination play.
4:35 I was expecting the same again today,
4:37 but having watched that first 50 minutes today,
4:40 I'm not sure where Spurs are going here.
4:42 I'm not Derer's been a good manager,
4:44 but he's not going to be able to turn things around in s
4:47 such a short space of time and get his style of football.
4:49 So I think he's caught between the two between trying to play out from the back
4:52 by trying to go long and at the moment the players look uh low in confidence.
4:56 The two wide players tell he scored a good goal
4:59 but Moani just didn't look as though he had enough play
5:01 and the center forward rich I just I'm not quite sure
5:04 what he gave the team today and the same with Gallagher.
5:06 Gallala couldn't get in the game.
5:08 So I'm looking at Spurs and saying it's going
5:10 to be a tough couple of games for them.
5:12 And with West Ham having a bit of momentum
5:14 even though they lost the game against Arsenal,
5:16 I think they will get some confidence from that game
5:18 and they might just get something at Newcastle.
5:20 What you thinking, Shaka?
5:21 Um I'm I'm I'm with George on on uh on Spurs running.
5:26 Um difficult games, Chelsea, despite Chelsea being who they who they are,
5:32 final home game of the season, London derby.
5:35 I'm I'm struggling to see Spurs get anything there.
5:37 And then they finish off half uh at at home to to Everton.
5:41 And given how nervy they were,
5:43 particularly in the closing minutes of this one, um,
5:45 and who ever have shown themselves to be recently,
5:48 I I I can I can see Spurs losing that one quite easily as well.
5:52 Maybe it's because I've got my West Ham glasses on here.
5:54 But for for West Ham, I don't see them getting anything at at St.
5:58 James's Park.
5:58 Last home game again for for Newcastle.
6:02 I've I've been there for those.
6:03 Um, it's going to be like like nothing else.
6:05 But I made the point going into the Arsenal game.
6:08 West Ham have lost once at home since early January since
6:12 they lost to to Nottenham Forest at at the London Stadium.
6:16 And then you see the effort that they put up against Arsenal um to finish off
6:21 finish off the season uh at home
6:23 to leads who are safe whose holidays are booked.
6:28 Um, and those two games being played simultaneously,
6:32 I I could see I could see West Ham winning at least
6:35 and and and if if uh Spurs go and lose those lose those two,
6:39 this two points dropped becomes well defining.
6:42 Can you put in a little call as the mayor of Newcastle?
6:45 Uh I I can I'm not I'm not sure anybody will answer, but I'll
6:49 I mean, was that a leads on holiday tonight?
6:53 No.
6:53 Not on holiday yet.
6:54 Leads on holiday yet?
6:56 No.
6:55 It'll be on holiday in two weeks time.
6:57 No, we that's what it is.
6:59 We saw exactly what leads are and what they
7:02 will be in that last game against West Ham.
7:04 And the problem for West Ham is they're two
7:08 points behind Spurs and and and I don't disagree
7:11 that where's Spurs where's where's the win coming
7:15 from, but they've got a two-point advantage over West Ham.
7:19 So I think it's more important we go
7:21 where's the where's the points coming from West Ham?
7:23 And I don't see where the points come from them either.
7:26 So the fact that Spurs are two points ahead right now,
7:28 absolutely 100% they are in pole position.
