NFL on CBS

0:00 Um, on the on defense,

0:02 obviously Travis Hunter when he was drafted last year as a two-way player,

0:06 that was a huge deal.

0:07 I feel like the fan base watching that, we went absolutely crazy cuz

0:10 it was a bold move that the fan base really really was excited about.

0:15 Now we're hearing that he's going to primarily,

0:17 you know, be be corner full-time.

0:19 Pete's shaking his head over there.

0:20 No, that's that's that's That's that's that's allegedly.

0:23 Yeah, I think so.

0:24 Tony came out and said that he's going to Tony Boselli.

0:27 Yeah.

0:27 He said he's going to come out and play both sides of the ball also.

0:30 Yeah.

0:31 Okay.

0:31 I want to ask you this.

0:32 So, you were probably a dual-threat player in high school.

0:35 I was a I was a dual-threat player.

0:37 All-state receiver.

0:38 Okay, all-state receiver.

0:39 What's your name?

0:40 I don't know why you're only a two-star recruit then.

0:41 I don't know what the heck [laughter] happened to you.

0:43 I don't know what was going on, but we know

0:47 most guys play both sides of the ball in high school.

0:49 We know some guys that even do it in college

0:50 or they have to pick a position in college.

0:52 Guys that they recruit us.

0:53 Mhm.

0:53 Obviously, Travis Hunter has been the one that's pegged as I

0:58 think more than any as a dual-threat player in the NFL.

1:01 Mhm.

1:02 Now, how does one even do that?

1:05 But two, if if his primary position is going to be a little more corner,

1:09 allegedly or allegedly not, how good could he be at that position?

1:13 I haven't seen him practice.

1:14 I haven't seen him play.

1:14 Could he be special special hot one of the highest-paid

1:18 players at corner if he focused on it?

1:20 Yeah.

1:20 But it's really hard to be the highest-paid player

1:22 at a position if you only play it half the time.

1:25 And that's why I don't get to pay people.

1:29 [laughter] That is a tough decision.

1:30 Great debate, right?

1:30 You're right about that, but uh you know,

1:33 when you talk about a athletic gift like a athlete he's just so gifted.

1:37 He's that different?

1:38 He like he's like the way he runs, the way he jumps, the way he moves,

1:42 it's like I don't want to play against like if

1:44 I'm a defensive player and he get a bubble screen,

1:47 you know, you got to turn and run like he got space.

1:50 I would hate to go against him.

1:52 You know what I'm saying?

1:53 Yeah, yeah.

1:53 I would hate to go against him as as a cornerback, man.

1:57 I think I done seen him I done seen him make a lot of plays in practice.

2:01 You know, I know we there was that one viral clip.

2:03 That was like one of I remember right before that play,

2:05 you know, you know, I want to see what he got.

2:07 So, The practice play, the catch in the game.

2:10 play when he you know, he got the little diving interception.

2:12 Yeah.

2:13 You know, I'm talking to Liam on the sideline.

2:14 I'm like, "Hey, Liam, throw the ball to Trav like throw the ball to him.

2:17 I don't like we want to see." He's like, "All right.

2:19 All right." He called the play, took him deep.

2:23 Man, I tried to tell you, man, that and for me playmakers play.

2:27 Yeah.

2:28 And and you want your best I want my as a defensive player

2:32 as a I want him on the field every snap with me to cover.

2:34 As a rusher, you know what I'm saying?

2:36 Like I would I would love for him to play, you know, corner all the time.

2:41 You know what I'm saying?

2:41 Personally, because I want my best players on the field at all time.

2:44 I think we have a really deep DB room.

2:46 Yeah.

2:47 I think we have, you know,

2:48 one of the best I think I think we have one of the best DB rooms.

2:52 I think with Coach Camp uh what he has them guys doing.

2:55 We just hired a new secondary coach and they love him.

2:59 And if your players love their coach love their coach,

3:01 then they're only going to bring a little bit more out of them.

3:04 And so you add a guy like that, man,

3:06 who can probably shut down the side of a field, That talented.

3:09 You know what I'm saying?

3:10 Yeah.

3:10 You know, that first read ain't there, you know,

3:13 get a hitch you get a get a little Yeah.

3:15 You know what I'm saying?

3:16 It goes from a pressure goes to a hit to sacks to forced fumbles to oh,

3:21 I got to speed it up.

3:22 Let me throw this ball up with there

3:23 and 50/50 balls I think Trav coming down with them.

3:26 Well, if you look at a lot of the Super Bowl teams, right?

3:29 Obviously, the Seahawks had a really good secondary and and a pass rush.

3:32 You look at the Chiefs, they've always had a corner.

3:35 Yes, sir.

3:35 McDuffie.

3:35 They don't pay him, but they always had a guy, right?

3:38 On the perimeter.

3:38 You look at the Patriots.

3:39 Yeah.

3:40 I played with Revis.

3:41 Yeah.

3:41 Gilmore was there.

3:42 You know, Ty Law.

3:44 There's always Christian Gonzalez, right?

3:46 Carlton Davis.

3:47 They understand the value.

3:50 The Broncos a team you got to compete against Pat Surtain.

3:52 They understand the value of having that dominance.

3:54 Mhm.

3:55 And Aqib Talib, played with him,

3:57 he's a guy who probably could have played both sides of the ball, Pete.

3:59 Yeah.

3:59 He's got like 13 pick-sixes.

4:01 But he played just defense cuz he was able

4:02 to take the ball away and he scored with it.

4:05 Our rule is if anyone got an interception, you got to pitch the ball to Aqib.

4:08 It was like Ed Reed,

4:09 "Give me the ball cuz I know how to score better than you do.

4:11 Especially I was a rookie.

4:12 Hey, rook, you [laughter] ever get a pick,

4:14 find me because I need to take that to the crib." And that's

4:16 how Aqib played and I think if Travis Hunter has that talent,

4:19 he should focus on that and obviously get some plays on offense if they want,

4:22 but I think the focus should be there.

4:24 Pete, what do you think?

4:24 Well, the way I was the way I was it was described to me last

4:27 year they wanted him to learn the offense

4:29 because it's complicated to learn the offense.

4:31 Once he learned the offense,

4:32 he was going to start playing more both ways and then he got hurt.

4:35 You saw people forget the last game he played was against the Rams

4:39 and he had eight catches for a over 100 yards and a touchdown.

4:42 He was just starting to get his rhythm.

4:45 But the plan this year is he's going to be

4:47 a full-time cornerback and spot in as a wide receiver.

4:50 That's that's what I I've heard that that and so you

4:52 get him as a full-time cornerback with the what you're describing,

4:56 you're talking about a number one corner in this league.

4:58 You're not talking about a guy that's just going to be a serviceable corner.

5:01 He's going to be a number one corner.

5:04 Mhm.

5:04 I mean, you see that Well, you saw that on the practice field last year.

5:06 to I'm going to help him get to it.

5:08 You know what I mean?

5:09 Like that's you know, if that's if that's the position that, you know,

5:13 James or Liam or whoever's making that final decision,

5:17 if that's what the end goal is supposed to be,

5:19 I'm going to do everything that I can to help him fulfill

5:22 whatever he needs him whatever the vision that they see him to be.

5:25 Um, you know, he's a he's a really he's a very bright kid, you know,

5:29 well, man, um, with a young beautiful family and, you know, who loves football.

5:37 Loves football.

5:37 Loves to be on the field.

5:38 Doesn't want to get off the field.

5:40 And uh if he can take that talent and kind of give

5:43 us the best that he can give give us everything he can,

5:46 man, I'm going to do everything I can to make sure he become the best corner,

5:49 Buster Brown, Jordan Louis, Jarrian Jones,

5:52 you know, all our safety, Eric Murray,

5:54 Antonio Johnson Antonio Johnson like I want to make sure all them boys shine.

5:58 So, you know, I got his back, you know,

6:01 if if that's the decision and we're going to make it happen.
