0:08 For the uninitiated, I found this old book in the trash,

0:11 and inside are a bunch of recipes that are about 85% practical chemistry,

0:16 10% Witchcraft, and the rest being some

0:18 of the worst ideas our species has ever thought of.

0:21 I've picked out even more ridiculous recipes to test, and in fact,

0:24 preparing for these experiments got me a visit by the FBI,

0:28 so you know this one's going to be good.

0:30 Now I gotta say it, the experiments

0:32 I'm about to show you are extremely dangerous,

0:34 and you'd probably die if you attempted them, so please don't.

0:38 and since I was nearly banned for this video series before,

0:41 I'm obligated to mention that I'm literally a chemist.

0:44 I may be crazy, but I know how to do this stuff safely,

0:47 so yeah please don't try this at home.

0:50 Anyway, let's continue our dive into the absurd world of 1933 chemical recipes.

0:56 This is one of the most ridiculous ideas I've ever seen.

0:59 It's a recipe for a self-igniting cigarette.

1:02 I guess the motivation here was, why carry a pack of smokes and a box

1:06 of matches when you can just combine them into one?

1:08 Now if the idea wasn't crazy enough, check out that ingredient list.

1:12 Potassium dichromate??

1:13 I mean yeah smoking will give you cancer too, but this is just speed running it.

1:18 and the burning sulfur??

1:20 That's awful!

1:21 Oh this one's gonna be fun!

1:23 There's actually two recipes here, where the first one isn't quite so horrible.

1:28 Now they don't say which form of carbon to use,

1:30 so I used lampblack for this because I like the sparks that it makes.

1:33 As for the second recipe,

1:35 I mixed the glues with water and then broke out the potassium dichromate.

1:38 Now don't be fooled, this stuff may look irresistibly delicious,

1:42 but I assure you, it'll mess you up in nearly every way imaginable.

1:47 In fact, it typically gets a level 4 health risk in most safety data sheets,

1:52 which is the highest it goes.

1:53 To make matters worse, the completed mix looks just like cheese sauce.

1:57 Like seriously I just want to put it on crackers and eat it.

2:01 I can't do that though, because it's like deadly or whatever.

2:05 Anyway here's what these glorified matches look like after a few days of drying.

2:09 All right let's start with the first mix.

2:14 uh ah what the heck?

2:16 This mix was hard to ignite, but once it lit,

2:20 it was surprisingly energetic and shot burning embers everywhere.

2:24 I probably used too much of the mix on the end of the stick in hindsight,

2:28 but at least it made an awesome effect.

2:31 Now to try the real cancer sticks.

2:35 huh that felt just like a normal match.

2:37 Slo-mo shows that it still managed to shoot off a few embers,

2:40 but nothing like the first formula.

2:42 This one was easier to ignite too, but of course,

2:46 it comes with the cost of being incredibly toxic.

2:49 Here's a recipe for a lab top stain

2:52 that's based on some of my favorite chemicals.

2:54 Now I thought it'd be fitting to have

2:56 a 1930s style lab set up for these experiments,

2:58 and spoiler alert, I actually used it on this very desk.

3:02 I started with this E7Q standing desk

3:04 that was sent to me by my sponsor flexispot.

3:07 This desk is incredibly stable and built

3:09 with very tight tolerances which means I don't

3:11 have to worry about it wobbling and spilling

3:14 horrible chemicals everywhere when I'm working at it.

3:16 It's funny because the original coating

3:18 on here is actually highly chemically resistant already,

3:21 and that's due to the magic of modern polymer chemistry.

3:23 I actually had to sand this off in order

3:26 to get my chemical recipe to stick to the desk.

3:29 The first part of the formula calls for two beautiful compounds, copper sulfate,

3:33 which forms these bright blue crystals, and potassium permanganate,

3:36 which makes a deep magenta solution when dissolved in water.

3:40 Potassium permanganate is actually made right here in the state of Illinois,

3:43 well it was until the factory exploded a couple months ago.

3:48 Anyway, this first solution actually stained the wood

3:50 a fairly dark color on its own, even before applying the second solution.

3:54 The second solution looks pretty boring, but when painted on the desk,

3:58 it polymerizes into a deep black color due to the formation of polyanilines.

4:02 This coating actually turned out to be slightly conductive so I figured I'd

4:06 use it to make the table into an ESD proof workstation by grounding it.

4:09 It turns out trying to drill through

4:12 this carbon steel frame was nearly impossible,

4:14 but then again, the desk is rated to hold over 400 pounds after all.

4:18 I ended up just filing a spot where I

4:20 could attach a ground wire via some conductive tape.

4:23 The finished table is quite the ideal workstation for me.

4:26 It is in fact resistant to various forms of chemical attack,

4:29 and it is quite resistant to fire as well.

4:32 The coating itself lost some of its conductivity after applying the linseed oil,

4:36 but the frame itself is still grounded,

4:38 which helps prevent static buildup in its own right.

4:41 Now I've always liked standing desks since they're better

4:43 on my back and they're easier to build stuff on.

4:45 My new lab actually came with some standing desks when I bought it,

4:49 but they were built by a guy that was like a foot

4:51 taller than me so they're pretty awkward for me to use.

5:32 Why would you want to color coal?

5:34 I mean it's far from the weirdest recipe in here but I

5:37 guess it's simple enough that I should try it out anyway.

5:40 Thankfully I still had some coal leftover from Christmas to try this with.

5:44 I had to break it up since the recipe calls for freshly cracked pieces.

5:48 Now according to the patent that this recipe is based off

5:51 of, the book is wrong and what to do with these chemicals.

5:54 They need to be mixed before dunking the coal in it.

5:58 I'm using potassium ferrocyanide as opposed to the calcium

6:00 salt here but that change shouldn't matter.

6:03 Alright time to dunk in the coal.

6:07 Did it just- did it just dye it brown?

6:11 Well that's silly.

6:12 I guess there's a little blue in there.

6:15 The patent says that the effect is better when

6:17 dry so I'm gonna let some pieces air out.

6:21 Holy heck look at that!

6:23 That's beautiful!

6:24 Check out those incredible iridescent colors.

6:27 Wow the pieces are all so different too,

6:30 some are orange some blue, and most every color in between.

6:34 That's amazing.

6:34 For such a simple procedure,

6:36 this is one of the most impressive recipes I've tried yet,

6:40 and the chemistry here is fascinating as well.

6:42 It's a synthesis of a Prussian Blue pigment

6:45 that uses the coal surface as a reducing agent.

6:47 The reason you get so many more colors than

6:49 blue is mostly just due to thin film interference.

6:51 If I treat the coal for a while,

6:53 the coating ends up thick enough to look more like the classic dye.

6:57 This is such a perfect example of how chemistry is literally magic.

7:01 The science checks out of course,

7:03 but the fact that a couple simple chemicals transformed

7:06 some lumps of coal into something like this is astonishing.

7:09 It's reactions like this that remind us that chemistry arose out of alchemy.

7:13 What a cool recipe!

7:16 Here's a great recipe for removing annoying ant hills in the yard.

7:20 Simply toss enough cyanide on them to kill a hundred people!

7:23 If you think this seems a bit excessive,

7:25 it isn't even the worst ant removal recipe in the series,

7:28 because at least it goes away after some time.

7:30 Going through this book,

7:31 there are ant poison recipes using arsenic, lead, even thallium,

7:35 which is just a straight up horrible poison that doesn't just go away.

7:40 Here's a recipe for artificial fog.

7:42 Now when I think of artificial fog,

7:44 I think of a club filled with fun music and fog machines,

7:48 but judging by the chemicals used here, this looks closer to a war crime.

7:52 I mean seriously, carbon tetrachloride??

7:54 That stuff is straight up cancer juice!

7:57 and the zinc chloride product?

7:58 Oh this is a horrible recipe.

8:01 I'm looking forward to testing this one.

8:03 If you ignore the toxicity, this formula is quite interesting.

8:07 Half of it is carbon tetrachloride,

8:09 which before we figured out it destroys the ozone layer and your liver,

8:13 we used it widely as a fire extinguisher,

8:16 and here this formula actually burns it as the oxidizer,

8:19 liberating carbon and zinc chloride in the pyro

8:22 chemical single replacement reaction akin to a thermite.

8:24 Something tells me that a recipe that's half

8:27 fire extinguished here will be hard to ignite,

8:29 so I'll be using these ancient sparklers to ignite it.

8:32 oh here we go all right any minute now.

8:38 Hmm this stuff seems slow to start, but I think it's picking up pace now.

8:44 Oh wow it's really billowing out fog now,

8:46 that's some of the thickest smoke I've ever seen made by a pyro device.

8:51 That's actually extremely impressive.

8:53 You know, this mix is both clever and stupid at the same time.

8:57 The product of this reaction is zinc chloride smoke,

8:59 which has a potent affinity for water.

9:02 This means those particles bind to water in the air,

9:05 which increases the particle size and thus makes the smoke even thicker.

9:08 Now that smoke is also quite acidic,

9:11 and it's full of zinc so it's uh not great to inhale,

9:15 however a very similar mix called HC is still

9:18 used today by military and police as a smoke screen.

9:21 In fact, if you go to the war gases section of this book,

9:24 they'll tell you that I'm overreacting and that mixes like this are harmless.

9:27 Now I can't say I agree,

9:29 but I guess it's nothing compared to these other crimes against humanity.

9:33 Have you ever needed liters of sweat,

9:35 but didn't want to go through the effort of making it naturally?

9:39 Well lucky for you, here's a nice recipe for artificial perspiration.

9:42 I love how there's recipes for both new and old sweat here, how lovely.

9:47 Let's mix some of this stuff up.

9:49 I can't help but wonder what the original application of this would be,

9:53 but without any context given by the book,

9:55 I guess it leaves it up to our imagination.

9:57 I will say that the use of lactic acid and ammonium

10:00 carbonate means this would probably make a decent mosquito bait in traps.

10:04 Well here's two liters of artificial sweat.

10:06 Now does it smell like sweat?

10:10 Yeah I can't really say that one does, let's try the uh let's try the old one.

10:15 oh yeah that one actually does smell a bit like sweat, huh.

10:19 Now does it taste like sweat?

10:23 oh yeah it actually does it tastes a little bit like sweat, interesting.

10:27 I don't know what it is with this book and inhaling chloroform and ether,

10:31 but here's another brilliant concoction to inhale while you're sick.

10:34 Now seriously, what's this even supposed to do?

10:37 kill germs or put you in a coma?

10:39 Now those other ingredients are no cake walk either.

10:44 Phenol and creosote?

10:46 Geez.

10:47 Smoke pot?

10:48 oh it's a it's a smoke pot.

10:50 I'm guessing it makes a big cloud of smoke for using theatrical effects.

10:54 Now there are two recipes here, so you can pick your poison.

10:57 Do you want to inhale burning arsenic or sulfur?

11:00 If you're concerned about the amount of arsenic in that second formula,

11:03 the good news is that red arsenic is only 70 arsenic by weight,

11:07 so it's not quite a full pound of arsenic there.

11:09 It is however a pound of AsS.

11:11 Now even a pound of AsS has enough arsenic to kill like 500 people,

11:16 so I decided to go with the burning Brimstone version.

11:20 Besides, sulfur is an underappreciated element anyway.

11:22 Yeah it's smelly, but it can take on beautiful forms,

11:26 and it has several critical roles in biology.

11:29 Plus when it comes to fireworks, it's the great balancer because it's happy

11:33 being either the fuel or the oxidizer.

11:35 There is another issue with this mix though,

11:37 and that's that it doesn't even work!

11:39 I can't get it to light on fire which is a rarity for me.

11:44 If you've ever had the urge to plate random stuff in metal,

11:47 then this is the recipe for you.

11:49 Apparently with just two ingredients,

11:51 plastic and even bone can be plated in pure silver.

11:54 Now I don't know about you, but bone silvering juice just sounds magical,

11:58 so I'm gonna test this one out.

12:00 I found this deer skull while hiking

12:02 with my cats recently that'll be perfect for this experiment.

12:05 Thankfully, the bugs had already picked out all the gross stuff so it

12:09 just needed a quick rinse with water followed by a light wash with naptha.

12:13 I didn't have enough quinol to make gallons of four percent solution,

12:16 so I just made what I could and rinsed the skull

12:18 with it several times to make sure it soaked some of that up.

12:21 Now the book doesn't say what concentration of silver nitrate to use,

12:24 so I went with four percent like the quinol and poured it onto the skull.

12:28 The resultant plating was fairly dark,

12:29 but a quick polish with a rag really shined it up.

12:33 I think the result is quite impressive.

12:35 The smooth parts of the bone ended up with the shiniest plating,

12:39 whereas the more porous areas kept a darker tone.

12:41 Now it's hard to capture on camera,

12:43 but some areas are covered in little crystals of pure silver.

12:47 A beautiful skull and a beautiful desk to boot, how lovely.

12:50 You might think that the ink section in here would be pretty boring,

12:54 but it turns out there are plenty of exciting recipes in here.

12:58 Now this one claims that it can etch glass,

13:00 which is pretty crazy considering how resistant glass is to most chemicals.

13:04 Notice how they tell you to not get it on skin.

13:07 If this book tells you that, they mean it!

13:09 Hydrofluoric acid is a funny chemical.

13:11 It's only a weak acid, yet it can dissolve glass,

13:15 which is something that most strong acids can't do.

13:18 The recipe calls for lead and wooden utensils,

13:20 but I subbed them out for modern plastic

13:22 since they're even more resistant to attack from HF.

13:25 So what would happen if I spilled this on my skin?

13:29 Well I probably wouldn't feel anything at first,

13:31 but soon it would reveal itself as the ultimate bone hurting juice.

13:35 Hydrofluoric acid quickly penetrates skin to attack bones and liquefy flesh,

13:39 and exposing just a few percent of your skin to it can be fatal.

13:43 This is what makes this ink one

13:44 of the most dangerous recipes in the whole series.

13:48 On the flip side, the ink did a great job at etching the glass,

13:51 although it did bubble up a bit and cause etching in unintended places.

13:55 This etched glass gives really cool effects with laser beams,

13:58 as it preferentially illuminates the etched part.

14:01 This is certainly a cool recipe, but I'll say, it is quite scary to work with.

14:07 This one is so bad!

14:09 Eat three grams of a Mercury salt for stomach gas?

14:13 This would straight up poison you!

14:15 Whatever Mercury you'd absorb would stay with you for life, and you know what?

14:18 Your poop after this would be so toxic you need a HazMat team to clean it up.

14:23 I have no idea how people survived it all back then.

14:26 Judging by these parade torch recipes,

14:28 the 1930s really knew how to throw a parade.

14:31 Look at that first formula, it contains Paris green,

14:34 which is an arsenic salt, and calomel, which is a Mercury salt.

14:38 As you can imagine, inhaling the fumes from that would be horrible,

14:41 but maybe the beautiful blue flames would be worth it.

14:44 Now that second formula there is only mildly toxic

14:47 so I think that's the one I'm gonna test.

14:49 I'm going to assume that copper ammonium sulfate is

14:52 an old name for the complex tetraammine copper(II) sulfate monohydrate.

14:55 Now I don't have any of this on hand,

14:57 so I had to make some by reacting a copper sulfate solution with ammonia.

15:00 The resultant product is an incredible deep blue color.

15:03 Once this dried, I used some to make a batch

15:07 of this blue parade torch mix and filled some tubes with it.

15:10 What could possibly go wrong?

15:18 It sounds pretty cool, but the color is really washed out.

15:23 I can't say I'm very impressed with this one.

15:26 I still had some copper complex left over so I figured I'd

15:29 try to improve the mix using an ammonium oxidizer and a hexamine fuel.

15:33 Here we go!

15:43 Okay now we're talking!

15:45 Wow that sounds like a rocket.

15:47 oh geez that's an eye searing amount of blue light, yeah my camera hates that.

15:52 I should note that making a good blue in fireworks is quite the challenge,

15:57 well at least when you can't use arsenic and Mercury,

16:00 but I think this formula is an exception.

16:02 It just needed some adjustments to keep the flame temperature down.

16:07 This one looks really useful.

16:08 It's a simple method of plugging holes in metal,

16:11 and it uses just two ingredients!

16:12 What could possibly go wrong?

16:14 I've accidentally poked a hole in one of my favorite microwaves here,

16:18 and since I don't want the microwaves to escape or anything,

16:20 this is a perfect opportunity to test this recipe.

16:24 I have to say, these ingredients are quite unusual,

16:27 but at least they're easy to mix up.

16:29 I sanded off some of the coating there to expose the bare meta.

16:33 Let's go ahead and pour some of that mix on there.

16:37 alright time to heat it up.

16:42 uh is it supposed to catch on fire like that?

16:45 Wow that mix burns quite hot!

16:47 Let's take a look at what's left.

16:52 it definitely plugged the hole there, this stuff is as hard as a rock.

16:56 Impressive.

16:57 So what happens if you spill water on it?

17:00 Oh look at that, it reacts with water.

17:03 I guess any holes you plug with this won't be water tight.

17:06 It would also kill you in seconds if you did this indoors.

17:09 Yeah that's right, those little bubbles are what make

17:12 this the deadliest recipe I've found in the whole book series.

17:16 The recipe makes aluminum sulfide,

17:17 which generates the extremely deadly hydrogen sulfide gas on contact with water.

17:22 If this gas builds up to a measly one tenth of one percent in air,

17:26 and you take a single breath, you'll get knocked out almost instantly,

17:29 and your unconscious body will quickly inhale a fatal dose.

17:33 I cannot overstate how dangerous this recipe is.

17:36 The ingredients are fairly benign,

17:38 so an unsuspecting user would likely be oblivious

17:41 to the demon they're creating by mixing this.

17:45 Ointments aren't typically something I consider exciting,

17:48 but here's an excellent exception.

17:50 It's a mercury based ointment that also uses nitric acid as a bonus.

17:54 Now what you'd use this horrible potion for, I have no idea,

17:58 but whatever it is, it must be terrifying to justify using these ingredients.

18:02 Ever want to trick your geologist friends

18:04 in to thinking you have something special?

18:06 If so, look no further than this simple recipe.

18:10 Simply mix uranium salts with a powerful oxidizer,

18:13 and then cook the daylights out of it.

18:15 What a brilliant idea.

18:17 It's always a good day when I get to break out the uranium salts.

18:20 It's hard to deny their beauty,

18:22 and this recipe makes use of their strong fluorescence.

18:25 Of course, using uranium to make fake rocks is a bit silly,

18:29 because unsurprisingly, this gives a product that's radioactive and very toxic.

18:34 The uranium is diluted with sodium nitrate here,

18:37 and although this compound isn't very toxic, it brings up its own set of issues,

18:42 one of which is that it's a powerful oxidizer.

18:45 Anyway, let's cook this uranium mix.

18:47 Hmm this could be a bit faster couldn't it.

18:51 oh yeah there's some brown gas being released,

18:54 I think that some of the uranyl nitrate breaking down there,

18:57 you don't want to breathe that.

18:58 All right I think that's good enough.

19:01 Here's the completed fake mineral.

19:03 It is quite sparkly, and it turned redder than I expected,

19:07 probably due to trapped nitrogen dioxide gas.

19:10 But is it actually fluorescent?

19:12 I'll take that as a yes!

19:14 Is this recipe worth it?

19:16 No not even in the slightest!

19:18 It turns out, both of these ingredients here are deliquescent,

19:21 which means they have such an affinity for water

19:24 that they'll turn themselves into a puddle on a humid day.

19:27 That means you'll get radioactive salt everywhere,

19:29 and simply touching it with your bare hand will leave Uranium on your skin.

19:34 Besides, there are plenty of real fluorescent minerals out there that are cheap,

19:37 and if you're going to go with something artificial,

19:39 you might as well pick something that nature can't offer.

19:42 For example I have this neat GAGG crystal here that's not only fluorescent,

19:46 but it's also phosphorescent, and even crazier, it's ferromagnetic too.

19:50 Most importantly, it won't give you uranium poisoning by touching it.

19:55 What a silly formula.

19:56 Chemicals that glow in the dark?

19:59 Well that sounds like fun.

20:00 I mean nowadays we're spoiled with all sorts of phosphorescent pigments,

20:04 so I'm curious to see an old recipe like this holds up.

20:07 For this recipe I have to make some modifications to use what I have on hand.

20:11 I don't have zinc sulfide, but I do have zinc and sulfur.

20:15 which when burned produces zinc sulfide along with a bunch of heat.

20:18 My hope is that this short combustion reaction will be

20:21 enough to produce at least some amount of glow powder.

20:24 Well here goes nothing!

20:30 Oh wow that's a lot of fire!

20:32 I love the green flames there from the zinc metal burning.

20:36 mmm those fumes are delicious.

20:40 Yeah that crucible didn't like that one bi,t that must be incredibly hot.

20:45 Here's what the finished product looks like.

20:47 When I hit it with a UV flashlight, it actually gives a decent afterglow.

20:51 Sure it's nothing compared to modern pigments,

20:54 but this stuff works surprisingly well considering its simplicity.

20:57 I've picked out some of the better chunks to hit with a UV laser.

21:02 I can't believe how well this works given the modifications I made.

21:08 There are plenty of toilet fluids in this book series.

21:10 The toilet milk in my last video turned out to be really popular,

21:14 so I feel like this toilet vinegar is worth trying as well.

21:17 This recipe calls for glacial acetic acid,

21:20 which is basically ultra vinegar since it's

21:22 20 times more concentrated than normal vinegar.

21:24 The silly thing is that the recipe

21:26 dilutes it to regular vinegar strength with water,

21:28 so it really doesn't need the glacial stuff here.

21:32 Well I still don't know what this stuff actually does,

21:34 so I guess I'll just feed it to my favorite toilet.

21:37 Oh you know what?

21:39 This is a perfect opportunity for a baking soda volcano.

21:45 oh wow what a beautiful ad-friendly chemical reaction.

21:48 So many bubbles!

21:52 Now before I end this video,

21:53 I feel like I should give the story of my FBI visit because it's

21:56 already one of my top search suggestions

21:58 even though I've barely talked about it.

22:00 but anyway I was was playing with some stray cats that I

22:04 found in my backyard when this SUV pulls in the driveway.

22:07 Now it wasn't black!

22:08 it was uh it was like green or something

22:11 but anyway a couple guys come out so I walk up

22:14 there to greet them and and that's when they pull

22:17 out their badges and tell me that they're with the FBI.

22:20 so now I'm thinking oh boy right is it is it

22:23 all that you know Soviet military surplus I like to buy?

22:26 or is it that sketchy Chinese laser parts?

22:28 have I posted have my memes been too spicy that I've been posting online?

22:33 and I guess being Arabic probably doesn't help my case either.

22:37 but uh they told me yeah it was some

22:40 things I bought online that they were concerned about,

22:42 and they had this whole list,

22:44 and they start reading off all these chemical names.

22:46 and this actually surprised me because like

22:48 these are chemicals that I've bought for forever.

22:51 I even told them I was surprised it took them this long to visit me

22:55 over chemicals right but apparently the issue was

22:59 the quantity I ordered because I did order

23:03 a pretty uh substantial amount of chemicals

23:05 that can be used for explody purposes and they just wanted to make sure that I

23:10 didn't have anything horrible planned right but uh

23:13 but the funny thing was is my squirrel friend heard all this commotion and she's

23:17 up on the tree so she comes out of the tree and walks up to us

23:21 in the driveway and then she's just looking at us and then oh my I

23:26 wish I had I wish I had my security cameras up for this because it's so

23:30 absurd because they're they're wondering like you

23:32 know what's this squirrel here looking at us

23:34 for so here I you know I have to explain this some crazy guy that lives

23:38 in a cabin in the woods in the middle of nowhere that that I have

23:41 this squirrel friend that uh that loves people

23:44 and and likes to climb on people so

23:46 you know I'm trying to prevent her from jumping up on us but it's just
