DIY Flip-up Outdoor Camp Kitchen Build! | Ep 5 Sleepy Creek

Becki and Chris

0:00 how's this for a flattering angle is that a dead

0:04 bug on the lens I think it might be in last

0:06 week's video we finished building out our freestanding deck

0:10 that we can pitch a tent on all right we have

0:11 to put up three posts to support this sort of last

0:14 minute idea we got of making a fold out sort

0:18 of Murphy style kitchen countertop area for like food prep

0:22 there's going to be some sort of Cedar wall type thing

0:24 that will then be hinged and flip up and then

0:27 have legs that come down for the Post these are pressure

0:29 treated which are which is fine but where we're going

0:31 to be possibly doing food prep and things the actual surface

0:33 of the structure is going to be made of cedar so

0:35 with a design in mind Chris actually worked on a lot

0:37 of this at home ahead of time which is great

0:39 because we just went out to the woods to sleep overnight

0:42 with the intention of kind of just trying to finish

0:43 this project in one day good morning good morning from our climate

0:47 controlled pod yeah it's officially November which means it's basically

0:52 winter I had a real cozy night uh the plan

0:55 for today is to build temporary Camp Kitchen on our tent

1:00 platform this a nice morning yeah it is really nice

1:03 actually I'm glad we came out you find there Leaf

1:07 you come a long way PE 10 years ago you've been

1:09 look oh my God there's a leaf in my water

1:11 our water's contaminated I don't give a anymore this is

1:15 a camp drawer all of our cooking gear in here water

1:19 storage and all of our construction stuff's in here it's working

1:22 out really well I'm like making some tweaks to it

1:24 as I go so like we just keep all of our toiletries

1:27 in this little like stasher bag and then just throw

1:29 it in there and it's easy to get at the setup

1:32 in the truck changes every single time we come down

1:33 depending on what we're working on if the truck is

1:35 full of tools and we kind of have to take

1:36 a more minimal kit I took the full kitchen today I

1:39 wasn't going to I'll tell you why I took the full

1:40 kitchen in a little bit in the meantime I will

1:43 give you an update on what's going on with this platform

1:45 project over here while Becky's making our tea and breakfast

1:48 this is our first 10th platform this whole project is

1:51 kind of is very fluid it's morphing kind of as we're

1:53 doing it and initially what we're going to do is

1:55 we're going to make one t platform massive one that will

1:58 take our large tent and we're going to put it

1:59 over there but it's kind of more deep in the woods

2:01 kind of edge of a bit of a grade there

2:03 a bit of a hill but then we were like well we

2:05 should make another tent platform so when we have guests

2:07 they can use it with like a normal size smaller tent

2:09 so we're like okay let's build two tent platforms so

2:11 we rented the heavy equipment we graded everything out as best

2:15 we could we put down some Crush Stone and then

2:17 we thought you know what we should work on the smaller

2:18 tent platform easier to do projects it's a smaller project

2:21 and it's a bit more we don't want to bite off

2:23 too much at one point and have like be working

2:25 for like a full year before any of the projects are

2:28 done if we do them in parallel we thought okay

2:30 let's focus on doing one platform at a time at least

2:32 then we'll have something we can use in the inter

2:33 room so we opted for the small temp platform which is

2:36 here this probably one of the nicer decks I've ever built

2:38 I've only Built three but this is this is the nicest

2:41 one of them yet we've got a nice kind of picture

2:43 frame mitered edge here so it frames out the deck

2:46 deck boards in the middle are all whole cut there's

2:48 no seams I'm happy with how it looks I think it's

2:50 pretty sturdy not bad for something that's just basically built

2:53 on blocks even doing this is probably extreme some of the tent

2:56 platforms I've seen at other campsites are a lot less

2:59 robust we'll say but I basically just built this like

3:02 I'd build a deck minus the actual footings that usually

3:05 have to go down into holes deeper than 48 inches

3:08 a little frost line This is literally just built on grade

3:10 if you've probably noticed we've got these pillars here what we're

3:13 doing with those is there going to be supports

3:15 for a kitchen area it's going to look like a wooden slat

3:20 wall uh when it's in its down position but it's going

3:23 to have the ability some hinges on it and the ability

3:25 for a work surface that's counter height to flip up

3:28 the reason we didn't want to make it just a permanent

3:31 horizontal structure is because or two reasons one you lose

3:34 part of the footprint of the deck so you don't have

3:36 all the space and number two is that any horizontal

3:40 surfaces Outdoors will collect water and water will cause rot so

3:44 we use cedar deck boards for the surface cuz they

3:46 are more weather resistant but they're not weather impervia so we

3:50 use cedar plus I coated them in tongue oil so

3:54 the tongue oil finish is a nice oil finish that won't

3:58 peel won't flake over time so you can easily reapply

4:00 it if you need to and it makes it water resistant

4:03 so that is kind of the summary of the project

4:06 here I'm happy with how it's turning out so far

4:08 the whole back area here I built at home so I

4:11 figured rather than making all these Precision Cuts here staying down

4:14 here we don't need to I can make Headway at home

4:17 build it in modules and then install the three pieces

4:20 to the framing members here and hopefully we can get

4:24 this project done today then I'll figure out what I'm going

4:27 to do I might leave some of these pillars up

4:29 high in the mount lights to them haven't figured that out

4:30 yet might cut them flush just so it has a more

4:32 of a clean look we'll consult Becky on that one

4:34 she's the design Queen when it comes to All Things

4:37 aesthetic but that's the project you're cheating I want a fire

4:46 now I'm hungry if we want to keep this fire

4:48 going all day I got a lot of wood to cut

4:54 after Chris installed the bottom part with these L brackets

4:56 we got a fire going yeah good job and then he

4:59 brought over the other two pieces and started installing the hinges

5:03 and that would be the mechanism that would allow our kitchen

5:05 platform to flip up and down he pre-drilled all the holes

5:10 to make sure nothing split and then installed those hinges

5:13 and then two of us lifted it onto the other

5:15 piece that we had already installed laying it on top

5:17 of two speed squares which we used as spacers I'm

5:21 on the ground there bud looking at it now it looks

5:24 like the counter level where the hinges are is going

5:26 to be way too high it's like at it's like at Becky's

5:29 shoulder right optical illusion perfect it's going to be like

5:32 right here that's perfect I didn't want to like half cut

5:35 the boards and then make it so that there was

5:38 like a half strip at the bottom to get cuz we

5:39 could make the counter height literally any height we wanted

5:42 and I think what what the normal counter height like 36

5:44 34 36 in and I think that's like 39 but we're

5:49 tall human so and it's an outdoor project outdoor project yeah

5:52 I've already cut Corners that I would never cut

5:54 in an indor project or like a year this thing is

5:56 going to get like all warped and gnarled and they'll

5:59 be fine one Pitfall that might still be a problem is

6:02 that since the hinge is on the front of the boards

6:06 the back corner of the framing I'm wondering if it's

6:09 going to swing out and it's going to scrape and if

6:12 it's not it might so this might not open basically yeah

6:14 all the spaces are not just for aesthetic reasons the spaces

6:17 there are so that I could put spaces see where

6:19 those speed squares are sticking by Becky's knee that's a 316

6:22 inch Gap now so that should fingers crossed be enough

6:26 clearance to have this thing swing up if it's not

6:28 we'll have to Fig something out I brought a hand planer

6:31 though just in case I think this is m a got

6:35 to get the speed out [Music] Jesus well that's a predicament

6:41 Now isn't it well first of all flip her up

6:43 and see if she works wow here stand up there

6:46 and is it too high I think it's fine if

6:48 it's too high we fix it now how are we going

6:51 to fix that workk all right so space it with two

6:55 of the triangles cuz I think what's happening is there's

6:57 some play in the hinges and it's dropping down a bit

6:59 there's a bit of play in the whole system to say

7:03 oh never thought about that oh no my screws you

7:07 no I Dro My screws the issue that I thought we

7:13 would run into I'll get a latch or something that we

7:15 can latch on the back doesn't look stupid like it

7:17 doesn't like float out like that question number two there

7:20 is no question number two I I I thought about

7:22 this see stand by the power planer and we'll just buzz

7:27 off the corner just keep buzzing in the back corner it

7:29 until we have the generator mode on Becky's truck that can

7:33 run this I assume it can run this I have

7:35 not tried to run this before it could run

7:37 to the miter saw barely so it should be able to run

7:40 the power planter but let's I'll fix this on all

7:43 points and I'm going to use some of these 8

7:46 in Long 8 in Long s SWS Timber [Music] screw I

7:57 am clam hands [Music] after Chris installed the entire wall he

8:14 started building legs for the bench oh she's too tall

8:20 always cut a hair off but you can't add a tear

8:23 back on Moment of Truth there you go here we

8:30 go here we go one how you going to get it

8:35 okay how are we going to what get it stay

8:37 up power of the latch okay stop that is so cool

8:46 g latch mechanism there you go getting hry now we

8:52 still got to plan that [Music] off oh okay she's out

9:02 you know that's not a bad cut for you look like the pi Piper I am the P do me

9:08 a little [Music] song now it is time it's Moment

9:20 of Truth we wanted to kind of do a hybrid tent platform

9:23 but also a kitchen so that when we're here solo

9:26 and we're using the big tent platform that which is not

9:28 built yet we can kind of set up our kitchen area

9:31 here this wall flips up to become a kitchen and flips

9:34 down to become a tent platform the second leg

9:37 that comes down this is so freaking cool right now she's

9:41 Rock Solid she but she ain't going anywhere so we

9:45 succeeded in finishing this before the sun goes down we brought

9:48 a full ass meal to try this out I'll go

9:50 get my cutting board and we'll make a little work surface

9:53 cool not sure what we're going to do with these posts

9:55 yet here doesn't like the look of them but we could

9:58 use to mount lights so you can have some down

10:00 lights on the work area I I'm not sure yet

10:02 what's going to happen with them you can always cut

10:05 them off but you can't uncut them we'll figure that out

10:07 in the future the rest of the project when we

10:08 figure the lighting out for this area Kettle pot I found

10:11 a piece of flank steak at Wagman's little tiny piece it

10:14 was on sale for like five bucks so I got miso

10:16 soup we're going to do some noodles I've never had

10:18 these before and I didn't bring any vegetables so they're

10:20 just going to be as is with some steak on top

10:22 steak noodles this is great [Music] so much room oh

10:30 my God I'm so [Music] excited it's not quite up

10:40 to temperature internally so we've gotten our color now we're going

10:43 to decrease the amount of heat on the steak and uh

10:46 so what I did was I kind of push the fire

10:48 over to the corner and then made a little coal

10:50 bed underneath it and I'll just kind of flip off

10:52 in so it kind of evenly Cooks we'll cool it

10:54 on the color on the outside and we'll just kind of cook

10:56 it until it's up the temp on the inside m

11:00 this is great thank you so much for building this oh

11:02 you're welcome this is so cool like I feel like

11:04 we finally have a way to use the the [Music] land

11:11 we have better Chopsticks here than we do at home

11:15 this is great I love this we are going to build

11:18 like a full kitchen area over here cuz I think

11:20 the ultimate not here but somewhere in the land cuz the ultimate

11:23 goal is to be able to come out here

11:24 and cook like massive meals over big open fires that's kind

11:29 of like one of the things that I really want

11:31 to kind of get into more is like doing more extensive meals

11:34 cooking over open fire like in a perfect world The barebones

11:37 Cowboy cooking setup where it's like the big stand it's

11:39 like a 36 in pit for uh open fire and you

11:43 can like hang up meats and stuff but for now

11:47 this is perfect coming Against the Grain perfect grains are going

11:54 this way so I'm cutting like this makes for a more

11:57 tender piece easier to chew up thank you Wicked M

12:09 that tastes pretty good this is really good for an outdoor

12:11 meal huh this would be good for an indoor meal

12:13 yeah it would if this had like mushrooms in [Music]

12:20 it this is elderflower Rose lemonade not alcoholic delicious that's

12:26 great we got a lot of work done today we had

12:27 a delicious meal fairly able night sleeping in the rivan last

12:30 night slept in this morning we got all of our work

12:33 done now we're having this delicious meal had of campfire

12:35 and it's not even that cold out today it's probably 10°

12:38 C we see you guys on the next one all

12:41 right bye Jesus can you sit on it I don't think

12:46 I have any energy oh she's only flexing a little

12:50 oh that just took every La last ounce of my energy

12:53 a rogue toilet should we make a calendar that's a m

12:59 Mr November Mr November come here and look and see

13:02 what we're doing here probably not be under here when

13:04 I undo this no you should definitely y this thing came

13:08 down it like a guillotine imagine if I Crush my trachea

13:11 if I Crush my trachea cuz it's going to come

13:13 in right here and then you would have to perform

13:15 you have all these power tools at your disposal you would

13:18 have to perform an emergency tracheostomy how would I know

13:21 how to do that you could do it I trust you

13:22 I don't even know what that means what um all you

13:26 have to do is find a hollow canel and just basically
