Speaking Brazilian Language School

0:02 Hello everyone.

0:05 Welcome to this class.

0:09 Brazil.

0:10 I'm Virginia, your Brazilian Portuguese teacher.

0:14 Today we are going to talk about irregular verbs.

0:18 We are going to review and then practice the most common irregular verbs.

0:23 I'm really here to help you learn these conjugations.

0:27 And I'm also going to talk a little bit about some

0:30 patterns that can help you recognize irregular verbs and conjugate them.

0:35 Uh we'll be here for about 30 minutes.

0:37 I hope you can stay until the end.

0:40 Uh and let me know in the chat uh where are you from?

0:45 And also know what is your name?

0:47 Because sometimes they use different names right for your profile.

0:50 So let me know your name and um throughout the class I'll be going

0:56 to the comment sections to read your comments and see if you have any questions.

1:00 So whenever I say oh I'm looking at your comments now

1:03 you can go ahead and ask any questions that you have.

1:06 Uh sometimes I cannot read everything.

1:07 So feel free to uh copy and paste a question if I miss your question.

1:12 Tabing.

1:13 Uh let me see what else I have to say here.

1:14 I have some notes in front of me.

1:16 Uh, I also prepared a worksheet um with a summary of um the lesson.

1:22 It's actually a a worksheet that I prepared for another video,

1:26 but I think it has everything to do with today's lesson.

1:29 And in this worksheet, I cover 50 verbs.

1:33 You find the link to download uh

1:35 this worksheet in the description below the video.

1:37 I'm also going to share um QR code with you in a minute.

1:41 So, I recommend you download it so you can practice after the class.

1:44 Okay?

1:44 we you find a table um a verb table and also

1:48 many exercises to practice 50 common verbs in Brazilian Portuguese.

1:54 So let me see who is here.

2:11 Phoenix Ibraham.

2:19 Wow.

2:20 David, Gabriella Las Vegas.

2:26 Donopoulos to the bone.

2:33 DJ the Panama Bill the Palm Springs Mark the Canada David.

2:45 Welcome.

2:45 Welcome.

2:49 So good to see you all here.

2:53 Yay.

2:54 So I'll go back to the chat in a minute.

2:57 Let's get started.

2:58 I'm going to share my screen with you.

3:02 So, this is the uh QR code if you want if

3:05 you're watching this on your computer and you can just scan,

3:08 but also you can just get the link below the video uh

3:11 to download your worksheet with exercises

3:14 to practice 50 common verbs in Portuguese, 30 regular and 20 irregular.

3:20 But today's class, uh we are going to focus on irregular verbs.

3:27 So, first, what does it mean when you say irregular?

3:30 You probably know irregular verbs are those that don't follow a pattern, right?

3:34 So the regular verbs, they're really irregular.

3:37 They follow the same pattern.

3:38 So if you learn the conjugation of one verb,

3:41 one regular verb, that means you know how to conjugate all verbs.

3:45 Uh so if you learn verbal,

3:48 you know how to conjugate and many many verbs um in Portuguese.

3:55 But when it comes to irregular verbs,

3:58 it gets tricky because they don't really follow a pattern.

4:01 So you kind of have to learn one by one.

4:04 The good news is that um there are only

4:07 a few verbs that we really use every day.

4:10 Um so most verbs are actually regular,

4:13 but we do have some very important irregular verbs that you have to learn.

4:19 We are going to focus on those today.

4:21 Okay.

4:22 So, the good news, you don't have to learn hundreds of irregular verbs.

4:25 Just focus on the most common ones and you'll be fine

4:28 because these are the ones that we really use every day.

4:31 Okay?

4:32 Maybe sometimes in a very specific situation, you might need a different verb,

4:36 but every day we only we always use the same ones.

4:40 Um, so today we're covering uh 15 verbs.

4:44 Um, very common verbs.

4:45 Let's start reviewing these very basic, very common verbs.

4:50 Uh and also note note the conjugation.

4:53 You have to learn four different conjugations for each verb.

4:58 Two in the singular form and two in the plural form.

5:02 Right?

5:02 So we have a very unique conjugation for the pronoun eo which means I.

5:09 And then we have one single conjugation for four pronouns.

5:14 um vi and all these pronouns of pronoun phrase in the case

5:23 of ai they all are conjugated in the third person singular.

5:27 So v means you, means he, l means she, and aeni means we in an informal way.

5:36 And then we have the unique also conjugation for the pronoun

5:40 nos which means we and also one single conjugation for visalis.

5:47 V means you plural you.

5:51 Alis means they masculine and alis mean uh means they feminine.

5:57 So we have the feminine, the masculine, they in Portuguese.

6:01 Okay.

6:02 So same conjugation for all these pronouns.

6:05 So you only have to learn four different types of conjugations.

6:10 Okay?

6:11 And the singular form is the most common is

6:15 the one that we use the most in conversation.

6:18 So if you are a beginner level student, you can start here.

6:21 Learn the conjugation for and learn the conjugation

6:24 for a and this is what you're going to use 90% of the time and then once

6:32 you need to use these other conjugations as well.

6:35 Quick review of these very common irregular verbs.

6:39 So verb te I recommend you repeat after me just to practice.

6:42 We are going to see examples in sentences in a minute.

6:45 Okay, this is just a quick review of verb forms.

6:48 So, verb means to have the pronunciation for the singular

6:58 and the plural form is the same pronunciation.

7:02 There's a small difference in the writing, right?

7:05 Verb means to go.

7:08 And we use this verb in a lot of uh

7:10 when you're talking about the future as well, right?

7:12 I will do this.

7:14 that that's what you say and then we add any verb after that.

7:18 So this is very very important verb.

7:20 So repeat after me to practice.

7:33 do or to make depending on the context.

7:36 We have one single verb in Portuguese for to do and to make.

7:40 Very irregular, very useful.

7:42 We use this verb in so many phrases, right?

7:44 Combining verb f with some other word.

7:48 Uh so repeat after me to practice.

7:58 So a very common question with verb f is

8:00 what do you do like for a living, right?

8:04 Give us a then we have verb which means to come right the movement

8:11 from one place to the place where you are and repeat after me to practice.

8:23 Um most of the time instead of saying

8:26 no people will say it just sounds more natural

8:30 in conversation to use the aenti in colloial

8:33 language instead of nos but you will hear people

8:36 using nos um in some situations verb means can or being able to or may it really

8:46 depends this is a modal verb and the translation

8:48 into English and other languages will vary depending

8:51 on the context but the most common uh translation

8:55 would be can like I can uh in present tense but and then in the past would

9:02 be I could but let's practice the form repeat

9:06 after me to practice you don't have to memorize

9:16 all this right now download the worksheet so you

9:20 can practice and learn this with more time

9:24 and do the exercises to see examples in sentences, right?

9:28 Because here just it's really hard to memorize verbs this way.

9:32 I'm just going through this so as a review

9:35 if you have learned these verbs before,

9:37 but it's really important to see examples in sentences

9:40 and and we are going to do that in a minute.

9:42 Okay.

9:43 And esta means to be.

9:45 Uh we also have another verb that means to be which is s.

9:50 So sar they have the same meaning in English.

9:53 In English we have one single verb and in Portuguese we have two.

9:56 It's it's the opposite of fazer, right?

9:58 In fazer in Portuguese we have one single verb

10:01 and in English you have two to do and to make.

10:04 In Portuguese we have one.

10:05 It's fazer.

10:06 But when it comes to verb to be it's the opposite.

10:08 In English we have just one verb and in Portuguese we have two.

10:12 Um, so it's harder for English speakers to learn verb esta and and it's harder

10:19 for Portuguese speakers to learn how to use

10:22 verbs uh to make and to do, for example.

10:24 So repeat after me to practice.

10:33 Uh, I want to before we do the exercises, I brought many exercises here so we

10:38 can see examples and sentences and practice together.

10:41 But first I want to um bring your attention to this patterns

10:45 because irregular verbs as I said they don't have a pattern.

10:50 Uh but some of them do.

10:54 Uh we have many verbs that are derived from a base verb.

11:00 Um so the conjugation of these group of verbs is similar.

11:04 So that can really help you uh conjugate certain verbs if you remember that.

11:10 Um so these are the most common ones.

11:12 Um so whenever we saw the conjugation

11:16 of the right this is a very important verb.

11:18 You have to learn the conjugation of verb the which means to have.

11:22 We use this verb all the time.

11:25 Uh but whenever you see another verb that ends

11:29 with t e r just like there remember oh the conjugation

11:34 of this verb is just like te because it was

11:39 formed by from verb te right it's derived from verb te.

11:45 So the conjugation is the same.

11:47 For example, verb m which means maintain and cont which means contain.

11:53 The conjugation is very similar.

11:55 So see examples here and so on.

12:02 There are many other verbs that end with whenever

12:04 you see a verb that ends with t e r, you know it follows this pattern.

12:10 Okay.

12:11 Another pattern that you see are verbs that end

12:13 with poor just like the verb poor which means put.

12:18 Um and we have many other verbs that end with poor like support.

12:24 So the the conjugation would be and so on.

12:32 And this applies to other tenses as well.

12:34 Today I'm talking about present tense because it's a lot of information.

12:38 Uh so I'm not covering other tenses.

12:41 uh but I have many videos on this channel

12:43 that also cover past tense and other tenses.

12:47 Uh and also we have you see this pattern with verb which means

12:52 to see and then we have pre conjugated the same way and many other verbs.

13:04 uh and also same pattern with for example and are conjugated the same way.

13:16 So I hope this helps you see at least

13:18 some type of pattern uh with irregular verbs.

13:23 I'm going to go to the um to the chat now to see your comments.

13:27 Uh I want to give you two suggestions

13:29 to learn more about uh verb conjugation in general.

13:32 If you just need to check briefly, oh,

13:35 how do I conjugate this verb in this specific tense?

13:38 I highly recommend this website.

13:39 It's not mine.

13:40 It's a website called it's very good for just reference.

13:49 Just go there and quick look the conjugation

13:51 of a certain verb in any tense of the main tenses.

13:55 Uh very useful website.

13:57 Uh, if you want to learn how to conjugate, um, how to not only how to conjugate,

14:03 but how to use all tenses that we have in Brazilian Portuguese,

14:07 then I recommend our course, Verb Conjugation Crash Course.

14:10 I cover all tenses used in Portuguese

14:13 and all the most common verbs used in Brazil.

14:16 So, this course will really teach you step by step how to use each tense, okay?

14:21 because this other website will just give you the conjugation.

14:24 It will not really teach you how to use the tenses like in real life.

14:28 So now I'm going to go to the comment section to see if you have

14:32 any comments or questions for me and then

14:34 we are going to do some exercises together.

14:36 Okay.

14:45 Uh, Deborah, Gabrieli, Robert, thank you.

14:55 So, Rob uh pasted the the uh the link to the verb

14:58 conjugation course in the chat if you want to take a look.

15:06 Oh, I'm glad you're here today to practice.

15:08 You know, this requires a lot of practice.

15:10 So, you cannot learn how to conjugate irregular verbs in 30 minutes.

15:14 [laughter] you really need a you really need a lot of practice.

15:18 I like doing exercises because it helps memorize,

15:20 but then you you should look for um opportunities to practice, right?

15:24 If you if you go to a class or if you have a friend

15:27 to speak with, you can also write

15:29 in a journal using different verbs to practice.

15:40 Okay, everybody, let's go to do let's go to the exercises.

15:44 I'm really glad you find this class useful.

15:47 And then I want to know if you have any questions,

15:50 any specific questions because I know that this is a really big topic, right?

15:54 You need a lot of practice.

15:56 But if you have any specific question, oh, like for example, oh, is this right?

16:00 How can I use this specific verb?

16:02 Can you give me examples?

16:03 Let me know and we can talk about that.

16:06 Let's do the exercises now.

16:12 So we are going to cover 15 verbs.

16:15 I hope we have time to cover everything.

16:16 So the first one is that.

16:19 That means to give.

16:20 This verb is interesting because it has this traditional

16:23 meaning but also it is used in many expressions.

16:27 I have a couple of videos about this verb on this channel.

16:30 You know that you can always look for videos.

16:32 If you open the channel on the main page, you find like a search tool.

16:36 You can type keywords there to look for other videos.

16:38 I have over 400 maybe 500 videos on this this channel already.

16:43 So take a look.

16:44 Uh so that how would you conjugate this here?

16:46 I want you to do it before I give you the answer.

16:50 See if you know it.

16:51 And if you don't know it know it it's fine.

16:53 You can learn today and you can also type in the chat just to practice.

17:02 I give special attention to my friends.

17:04 How you say that in Portuguese?

17:08 Eldo.

17:10 Eldo.

17:12 I give and how would you say for V?

17:16 V.

17:28 Right.

17:32 Means to say or to tell.

17:35 depends on the context.

17:38 Uh so how would you conjugate for the first person?

18:00 And how would be the conjugation for could

18:18 mean say or tell depending on the context.

18:22 You know this one?

18:23 This is the first verb that you

18:25 usually learn when you start learning Portuguese.

18:40 So a man would say and a woman would say because this is

18:46 an adjective that agrees that should agree in gender and number with the person.

18:56 So, I just gave you the answer that I was going to ask.

18:58 How to say seems to be,

19:12 but now it's used for usually locations and temporary situations.

19:32 I recommend you repeat after me just to practice repeating out loud.

19:35 It helps you practice pronunciation and also helps you,

19:38 you know, retain information.

19:41 for so I'm talking about a feeling that's why I'm

19:57 using verb estad and not verb because usually something that changes

20:00 right next one remember it means to do or to make

20:07 but also it's used in many many phrases and expressions.

20:13 Uh so in this case in English it's very common to say I exercise every morning.

20:18 In Portuguese we could say but it's very common

20:23 to say I do exercises or I make exercises every morning.

20:28 How do you say that in Portuguese?

20:45 I could say the singular or the plural here.

20:48 Okay, I could say every morning or both

20:54 ways are correct and very common in Portuguese.

20:59 How to say for oops, what happened?

21:03 I lost.

21:04 Okay.

21:06 How to say for Here ver means to see, right?

21:29 Uh it could also mean watch.

21:33 Uh but the traditional use of this verbs it means see.

21:39 Uh how do you say that?

21:48 Very irregular, right?

22:00 And how would you say that for Be careful not to confuse these two.

22:20 They're very similar, right?

22:21 V means to see.

22:23 V means to come, right?

22:27 It's a movement from there to this place.

22:32 Uh here.

22:40 How to say that in Portuguese?

22:45 V.

22:58 How would you say for V?

23:02 H.

23:06 Oops.

23:08 Vin.

23:09 Be careful with the pronunciation here.

23:11 Whenever you see a word ending in e m, the pronunciation is a.

23:17 We don't pronounce the m at the end of words.

23:20 We say vain.

23:21 Instead of them, right?

23:23 Vin.

23:24 Vain.

23:24 But say vane.

23:26 Va.

23:26 Come here.

23:27 Vin.

23:27 Vain.

23:29 And then we have verb.

23:32 Very very important.

23:33 We use this all the time.

23:34 We use in present tense.

23:36 We used to talk about the future, right?

23:37 I will or I'm going to.

23:39 It's plus the main verb.

23:44 So here, oh, I just gave you the answer.

23:55 I go to the gym.

24:00 How do you say for two vowels?

24:11 Remember to pronounce both vowels.

24:14 Vademia.

24:18 And then we have verb which we we did um see before.

24:36 Mus verb is also used a lot in compound tenses just like

24:43 the verb have in English right in how to say for v Again,

24:57 attention to the pronunciation.

24:59 It's not, it's see that I don't touch my lips.

25:07 T.

25:08 There's no N sound as well.

25:10 But if it is really hard for you, you could add like a very soft N.

25:18 And then we have verb.

25:20 means to bring something from another place

25:24 to the place where you are to bring something.

25:42 It's a weird verb in my opinion.

25:45 The the conjugation, especially in the past tense, it's very weird.

25:51 Well, irregular verbs, they sometimes don't make much sense.

25:59 How about for Okay.

26:09 Similar to f fast.

26:21 P means to put to place depends on the context.

26:27 Um for the first person You could also use verb which is regular.

26:48 Uh but many people also use verb poor and vyer nasal sound here.

27:06 Almost done.

27:08 means to want.

27:09 So it's usually used with another verb, right?

27:12 Something ko.

27:21 So here in the first person in the present

27:23 tense seems looks like a regular verb, right?

27:26 This verb is more irregular in other um tenses.

27:29 [clears throat] Uh and v.

27:39 This is also this is irregular, right?

27:41 Irregular.

27:56 Can I help you?

27:59 And then let's say that you are asking for help.

28:01 How would you ask?

28:08 We also have the um the conditional if you want to be extra polite, right?

28:15 So here would be can can you help me?

28:20 and sounds more polite.

28:22 It's the condition of means to know.

28:29 Uh so I know where the library is.

28:42 Vabi, I want to finish this list and go to the comment

28:48 section to see if you have any questions for me.

28:51 Means to read very irregular, right?

29:05 And Okay, we covered 15 verbs.

29:15 I know it's a lot to remember and learn at once.

29:19 So, I recommend you download the worksheet.

29:21 You see the link to download below the video.

29:25 And I want to hear from you.

29:26 Any comment, specific questions or comments?

29:36 Let's see your question then.

29:38 Is means you come and you see.

29:41 Uh no it means you come.

29:45 Uh you see it's right.

29:51 Um going to show you again here.

29:56 Right.

29:57 So the verb here.

30:03 Right.

30:03 So here I see V.

30:09 It's not a nasal sound.

30:10 It's I I see.

30:13 You see vein vin I know it's very similar but this one

30:19 is not nasal and this one is nasal and the pronunciation is a.

30:24 So you see vain you come.

30:35 the bone.

30:37 Oh, I'm glad you guys are doing the exercise in the chat.

30:41 Uh, yes, this video will stay on this channel so you can

30:44 come back and watch it later and maybe do the exercises again together.

30:56 Uh so the pronunciation of the singular and the plural

31:00 is the same for the verb v right vis.

31:07 So the pronunciation does not change because of this uh little uh graphic

31:11 accent is the same vain singular vay

31:16 two people vain same pronunciation vain vain.

31:21 Great question, Gabriella.

31:24 Oh, I'm so glad you enjoyed the class.

31:28 How to remember?

31:29 It's tricky.

31:30 You just need a lot of practice because it's a lot to remember, right?

31:35 Just go one by one.

31:36 I recommend you focus on those that you need at the moment, right?

31:39 Let's say you're doing some exercise or having some kind of interaction.

31:44 Focus on what you need at that moment and forget the rest

31:48 because it's just too much to learn at the same time.

31:50 You can do exercises.

31:52 You can write in on a um in a journal if you want.

31:55 Uh try to find like a routine that is enjoyable and don't

32:00 don't stress out about learning everything at once because it's just too much.

32:06 I see in Portugal they do use the to I'm not teaching the to today

32:10 because it's not especially the conjugation is not used um much in Brazil.

32:15 It is used a little bit some in some regions,

32:17 but I want to make your life easier.

32:20 That's why I teach the the conjugation for V

32:22 which is the most commonly used in Brazil.

32:26 How often is NOS used?

32:28 It is used a lot.

32:30 Uh but in colloquial language is more we use ai much more often than NS.

32:36 Uh but I use both.

32:37 I mix both aenti and I use I use both conjugations.

32:41 But uh if you find overwhelming to learn all

32:44 the conjugations you can use ai in spoken language.

32:48 It's totally fine.

32:49 and uh it's correct.

32:51 So don't worry about using a thank you so much for your questions.

32:58 If you have a question that I have not answered,

33:01 copy and paste because I don't want to go back.

33:04 Um see upstate New York.

33:08 Um I go to New York often because

33:09 I'm getting a master's degree at Columbia University.

33:13 Uh but I live uh a little bit further north.

33:18 There's a not a lot of snow is used in formal places.

33:24 You know this a difference between formal and informal in Brazil

33:28 is not really clear because Brazilians in general are really informal people.

33:33 So we do have like a a formal language and informal language.

33:36 But maybe in formal places most people would just use informal language.

33:42 So you can use ai anywhere in Brazil.

33:45 It's not wrong.

33:46 It's correct.

33:46 just feel free to use ai and the conjugation in the third person.

33:51 You see ns being used uh in written form right

33:54 in writing uh and uh it really depends on the situation.

33:59 Uh but don't don't be afraid of using ajenti in Brazil is very very common.

34:06 It's more common than not actually.

34:09 This is a good exercise for you to do.
