DaVinci Resolve 21! What's new?! You won't want to miss this!
MrAlexTech
0:00 H Dinci Resolve 21 is here.
0:05 It is a beta.
0:07 It is still currently in beta.
0:08 I am in America.
0:10 So yes, just this once I will say it.
0:12 Beta.
0:13 The Dav Vinci Resolve 21 beta is the Davinc Vinci Resolve 21
0:17 beta is available right now and it brings some pretty cool stuff.
0:22 We've got an actual full proper photo mode.
0:26 We've got some Intelly search things which do really clever things
0:30 as well as a bunch of really nice small quality of life updates.
0:34 Now, as this is a beta, it will be buggy.
0:36 You will have issues.
0:37 There will be problems and all that sort of stuff.
0:40 So, please do keep that in mind.
0:41 Now, if you want to grab it for yourself,
0:43 you do need to head over to the blackmagic.com support website.
0:47 I've linked it down below for you
0:48 and download it from there because it won't automatically
0:50 appear within your Dav Vinci Resolve unless you
0:53 have opted in to get the beta updates.
0:56 Now, another thing that's worth mentioning is you absolutely should do a backup
1:00 of your project library before you install
1:03 this because it will update your library,
1:06 which means if you have issues and then
1:07 you try to roll back to the previous version,
1:09 the project you updated to 21 won't work in Dinci Resolve 20.
1:14 So, keep that in mind.
1:16 Oh, and this video is sponsored by our good friends at audio,
1:19 but we'll come back to that a little bit later.
1:22 But for now, let's crack it open and take a look.
1:26 And we're gonna start off with one of the biggin,
1:28 that big chunky new photo mode, because I think this is really cool.
1:33 They're really taking the fight to the likes
1:35 of Adobe with their Lightroom because this is more of a Lightroom replacement
1:40 than it is Photoshop or anything like that.
1:43 So, enough waffle.
1:45 Let me open it up and show you how it works.
1:47 So, you start a new project exactly as you usually would.
1:50 and we're going to go straight to the edit page,
1:52 but at the bottom we now have photo page and it looks something like this.
1:57 Now, you think of it in a very similar way as the edit page.
2:00 So, we've got the media pool and we can rightclick and we
2:02 can just import stuff or we can create a new bin.
2:05 There you go, new bin.
2:07 And then we can right click and import media or we drag and drop.
2:10 But this time, we're looking for images rather than videos.
2:13 So, I've got a bunch of JPEGs here.
2:15 It does support raw images, but my raw images for my Lumix aren't supported yet.
2:20 But hopefully they will update.
2:22 Now we can either drag directly down here.
2:24 Think of this album as your timeline.
2:27 Or first of all, we can rightclick and we create a new photo album.
2:31 Again, think of it kind of like a timeline.
2:33 Once that's created, let's grab these, drop these down here.
2:37 And now we've got this little carousel thing with some
2:41 of my photos I took last year at the Grand Prix, which is kind of cool.
2:47 And then you can just go through, you can zoom in.
2:49 You can go through all of these.
2:50 Down the bottom, we've got some filters
2:53 for like a good take, untagged, rejected.
2:56 We can give them five star ratings.
2:59 We can do different versions.
3:00 So, we can test different looks.
3:02 It even pulls through things like the metadata.
3:05 So, I've got my camera, ISO, shutter speed, aperture, and the focal length.
3:11 Right?
3:11 And then we've got these little filters on the the left.
3:13 We right click them and we can say just filter by good
3:16 takes or just filter by five stars or equal to or less than.
3:23 We can do different colored tags.
3:25 We can just sort them by capture date,
3:27 edit date, rating, color, all that sort of stuff.
3:30 It's really cool.
3:31 Then if we just select one like this one here,
3:34 open up the inspector and we've got some things at the top.
3:38 So raw images, there's a raw area, so you edit your raw images within there.
3:42 But we are currently on photo mode.
3:44 We've got scopes at the top.
3:45 So we can use the standard scopes to take a look at our image.
3:49 We can go parade waveform vector scope.
3:52 Do what you want to do.
3:53 Nice source transform.
3:55 So then we can start zooming in, changing the position, changing the angle,
3:59 the pitch, the yaw, and then we can flip or rotate.
4:03 Source cropping.
4:04 So ratio as shot or we can go 16x9 or one by one or whatever we want to do.
4:10 We can crop from the left, top, bottom.
4:12 There's some built-in looks.
4:14 So, we've got these source looks.
4:16 Type at the moment is let's go black and white.
4:18 We can do bright.
4:19 We can do cool, dynamic, all that sort of stuff.
4:23 Let's leave it as default.
4:24 And then we've got individual adjustments.
4:26 So, white balance, tint, lift, gamma, and gain,
4:31 contrast, pivot, mid details, shadows, highlights, saturation, and hue.
4:35 There's also an autobalance.
4:37 Now, if you want to dive deep, you can jump over to the color page
4:41 and you get all of the same color page stuff.
4:44 So, you can do pretty much anything you can
4:46 do on the color page to your photos here instead.
4:50 There's also the effects library.
4:51 So, all of the effects library is within here as well.
4:54 So, we can add like this comic book
4:56 effect or colored borders or blurs or whatever.
5:00 Everything that's within here, we can start to apply.
5:04 We can even do open effects.
5:06 So, if I do shift and space to bring up the search,
5:09 you might maybe take a look at my new
5:12 tool that's coming out soon called Magic Grade, and that will work as well.
5:16 So, if I click on this little icon down here,
5:18 we've got the onscreen transform controls we can use.
5:22 If we jump over to the open effects, we can use open effects overlays.
5:25 So, then we can start to use some of the onscreen
5:28 overlays to do some cool stuff with my magic grade.
5:31 And there you go.
5:32 You can apply grain, hellation, all of the stuff that you usually would.
5:36 It's really, really cool.
5:39 There's a capture mode.
5:40 So, if you're plugged into your camera
5:41 and you want to start doing some live captures,
5:43 if your camera supports that, you can do directly from the photo page.
5:48 You can do a quick export.
5:49 So, we can export in TIFFs, PGs, JPEGs.
5:52 You simply give them a click.
5:53 You can customize.
5:54 You can say the entire album or just the ones I've currently selected,
5:58 the sizing, all that sort of stuff.
6:00 or if we go straight to the deliver page, you get this option anyway.
6:05 So, you can do it either from the deliver page or you can do the quick export.
6:09 Now, what's also cool and worth mentioning is if
6:11 I jump over to the edit page, we get this.
6:15 It's kind of like a slideshow timeline.
6:17 It looks like a regular timeline, but it's not because it is a photo album.
6:21 So, that means we can't actually delete anything or move things around.
6:26 But if we go to the media pool, right click on the edit page,
6:29 obviously we create a timeline, not a photo album.
6:32 So if I create this timeline, then I can go to the photo album.
6:36 Grab all those photos with a quick copy.
6:39 Dump them into this timeline.
6:40 And now this is a video timeline of those images which I've edited.
6:45 So then we can start to remove them around, drag them out, do some transforms,
6:50 do whatever you want to do because this is now just a standard video timeline.
6:55 Oh, and by the looks of things, I haven't tested this, but you can even
6:59 import the Lightroom catalog files into this photo mode.
7:03 So, you can bring them all in if you've got a catalog already.
7:05 Just dump it in and off you go, which is really cool.
7:09 Now, I will admit, I've been playing with this.
7:11 I really like the idea.
7:12 I think this is really cool.
7:13 It's a free alternative, and it is going to develop and grow.
7:17 At the moment, it does feel like a beta, a beta.
7:19 It feels a little bit rough around
7:21 the edges and it's relatively simplified in certain areas,
7:25 but this is a brand new page doing brand new stuff in a beta release.
7:31 So, it will get better.
7:32 They will improve it over time, but it's really cool that it's there.
7:36 Next, let's start talking about some of the slightly smaller quality of life
7:40 updates and then we'll go back and forth between big things and small things.
7:46 And one of the small things which will make your life a little bit easier
7:49 is there's now a little search box
7:51 when opening up the Dav Vinci Resolve preferences.
7:54 So we click on D Vinci Resolve top lefthand corner,
7:57 then go to preferences as usual.
7:59 But now we've got this little search bar in the top leftand corner.
8:02 Now this will be dependent on whether you're on the system or the user.
8:05 So let's go to user and maybe let's search
8:08 for the brand new spell checker because that's here now.
8:11 There it is.
8:12 Spell check.
8:13 And it will just highlight exactly what you want.
8:15 So then you can enable or disable the spell
8:18 checker and we've got some other options in there.
8:20 And then we can just get rid of that.
8:21 Search for something else.
8:22 Whatever we need just makes finding things that little bit easier.
8:27 Neato.
8:28 Now if you're paying attention, if you look really closely, which I'm a nerd,
8:33 so I like to do, you will also notice
8:35 they've kind of just improved some of the small things.
8:38 Some of it just looks a bit nicer in places.
8:42 It's a small thing, but look, these icons look a bit nicer.
8:48 I like nice icons.
8:50 And they've done some other small stuff, too.
8:52 We have our media pool.
8:54 And they've just tidied this up as well.
8:56 So, our bins sit at the top.
8:58 Smart bins, power bins.
8:59 Again, we've got some nice little new icons,
9:02 which just make things look a little bit neater.
9:04 And we've also got this little plus.
9:06 So, we can just make a new bin.
9:07 It's just a nice little plus button to make a new bin.
9:10 And if we come down to smart bins, we can make a new smart bin.
9:13 You actually get options if you right click power bins.
9:16 New bin.
9:17 There you go.
9:17 It's a nice nice little small thing.
9:21 That's what she said.
9:23 Next up, let's talk about fonts cuz we like fonts.
9:27 Well, I like fonts anyway.
9:28 I'm always using text and titles and stuff.
9:31 And a few versions ago, they finally added the fact that, you know,
9:34 you choose a font and it would actually live update in the preview window,
9:37 which was a really big thing.
9:38 They've taken that further and now we have
9:41 better viewing of fonts within the standard text,
9:45 but we also have a proper pop out font
9:48 browser thing with favorites and some other cool stuff.
9:51 So, let's just grab a text plus, drop this on my timeline, give it a click,
9:56 and right next to the font,
9:57 the font dropdown works pretty much the same as it did within a text plus.
10:02 There is a different one in text, which I'll show you in a second,
10:04 but there is this new icon to the right hand side.
10:07 Give that a click and tada, we get a font browser.
10:12 Now, I've already set two fonts as favorites
10:14 and that's what appears first if you have any, which is super useful.
10:18 So, you can always get back to your favorites.
10:19 But if we go to the all fonts,
10:21 you can see we've just got a long list of all of the fonts.
10:24 We can actually see what they look like properly.
10:27 I've got Calibri here.
10:28 If we click on the little drop down on the left,
10:30 we can see all of the different styles.
10:33 and we can pick one and then click select
10:34 and it will just apply it which is all pretty neat.
10:38 We can search for a font if we know the name and we can also if we
10:42 click on these three little dots in the top
10:43 right hand corner we can display user custom text.
10:48 So within here we can change it to say
10:50 the chicken jumped over the mountain dew cuz I'm in America.
10:59 And then we okay and there you go.
11:01 Now, if we want to make any of these favorites,
11:03 there is just this little star icon.
11:04 You just give those a click and they will then appear within your favorites.
11:09 Now, if I just cancel that a moment,
11:11 let's get rid of the text plus and instead grab the standard text because
11:16 this one does look a little bit different in the font family, the dropdown.
11:21 If we give that a click, we now also get a slightly nicer view.
11:25 So, [snorts] we don't just get the name of the font on this list.
11:28 We also get a real nice quick example to show
11:31 us what it's going to look like [sighs] tabs.
11:40 You now have media pool tabs.
11:43 So, with the media pool open, I've got a couple of bins.
11:46 If I simply right click on this bin number two,
11:49 there is an option open as a new tab.
11:52 So, then we just get some little tabs along the top.
11:55 So, let's just do bin one.
11:57 There you go.
11:57 Bin one and bin two.
11:59 And you can really quickly switch between them, which is just really useful,
12:03 especially if you've got a bunch of different bins.
12:06 [laughter] This one's not going to be useful for everyone,
12:09 but I think it's really useful if you do tabbed timelines,
12:13 if you always like the little tab open or you'd have multiple t timelines.
12:17 If you like the tab timelines thing, you know,
12:19 it was really annoying because you can never set this as a default.
12:23 We didn't see this announced anywhere.
12:24 I just saw it.
12:27 So, I'm in this project here and I've already got my stacked timeline enabled.
12:31 Now, what we can do, this is exciting.
12:34 If we click on that little icon, we've got our timeline view options.
12:38 You make sure your display stacked timelines is
12:41 ticked if you want them and obviously mess around, change anything else.
12:45 Now, we have a set as default view button.
12:48 Give that a click.
12:49 Now, if we just start a brand new project,
12:52 previously you'd still have to go and enable the stacks timelines bar,
12:56 and now you don't because it's the default view.
12:59 Yeah.
13:00 Now, if we jump over to the deliver page for this next one,
13:03 there's something which I know people have wanted
13:05 for a very very very very long time.
13:08 And they've also made some just other general aesthetic changes over here too.
13:14 There's actually another thing as well which they've added.
13:18 Let me just show you all of it.
13:20 Deliver page new stuff.
13:23 [laughter] All they've really done is change the presets how they work.
13:28 So rather than that horizontal bar, we now have a drop down.
13:31 So we've got all of the little items down here.
13:34 So we can just go to the YouTube one and we go
13:36 across and go to 4K or 1080p or whatever, which I like.
13:39 But all of the custom ones appear at the top as well, which is just a bit nicer.
13:44 You just give it a click, you can set your custom icons,
13:46 and they appear for you eagle-eyed people.
13:50 Estimated file size.
13:52 Yeah.
13:54 So now, as you change between different things,
13:57 it will update and give you the estimated file size,
14:00 which is a really nice thing to have.
14:03 Background rendering, kick off a job, and then keep doing other stuff.
14:10 So to enable your background renders,
14:12 you first need to come to the very top left and click on Da Vinci Resolve.
14:15 Then go to preferences.
14:17 And now, as mentioned before,
14:18 we've got our little swanky search bar, which is handy.
14:21 Let's just search for background.
14:23 There is background render.
14:26 And we have enable background renders.
14:28 Give that a tick.
14:30 We've got another one here.
14:31 Pause background renders on foreground activity.
14:35 Pause background renders on.
14:36 I'll figure that out another time.
14:38 We'll save that.
14:39 And now we can render all.
14:41 It's not moving things.
14:43 It's doing things in the background.
14:44 So now we can go back to the edit page.
14:46 We can have a little look around.
14:48 We can go back to the media page.
14:50 We can jump on and do some photos in this brand new photo page.
14:53 And if we go back to the deliver page, it's rendering things in the background.
14:59 Neato.
15:00 I like that.
15:01 That's good.
15:02 Right.
15:02 In a second, we're going to take a quick look at the spell check because again,
15:06 this is something people have been asking for for ages.
15:09 Spell checker.
15:10 Nice.
15:11 But there's a couple of just real
15:12 quickfire honorable mentions I want to mention.
15:17 Emojis in text plus.
15:19 You couldn't do that before.
15:21 Now you can.
15:22 I know not everyone likes emojis, but it is surprisingly useful.
15:25 You can just dump in an emoji.
15:27 Useful if you're doing any like text message kind of effect thing.
15:32 throw an emoji in there.
15:33 Job done.
15:34 You can now import Affinity files into Da Vinci Resolve
15:37 and they will sort of like de explode on the timeline, whatever the word is.
15:43 Similar to the previous PSD file, so you can actually view the layers and then
15:46 start amending things and this that and the other.
15:48 So again, it's another reason to maybe move away
15:51 from those guys and have a look at Affinity instead.
15:55 So that's nice.
15:56 Oh, and this one's a really nice one.
15:57 It's a small thing, but if you've ever fallen for this, you'll know it's handy.
16:01 If you've got a stereo track, but you just dump some mono audio on there,
16:06 which I always record my audio in mono,
16:08 and then previously it would just come out
16:10 of one side and you'd get the comment saying,
16:12 "My right ear really enjoyed this video," or whatever.
16:15 Now, if you put mono audio on a stereo timeline,
16:18 it will default to come out both left and right.
16:23 Small fix, but that will just make life a little bit easier.
16:26 So, spell check.
16:29 It checks spelling and words and stuff.
16:33 Here's how it works.
16:34 Who thought we'd get so excited about a spell checker, but we are.
16:38 So, let me show you how it works.
16:40 So, I've got a standard text plus.
16:42 I've got a standard text and then I've also
16:44 got one of the Fusion titles because this works everywhere.
16:47 It also works over on the Fusion page.
16:50 So, if we just grab my text plus, go to my text box,
16:53 and let's just put uh the chicken flu to booming cam, something like that.
17:01 And you'll notice within the inspector,
17:03 we get little red underlines on the words
17:06 it thinks that have been spelled incorrectly.
17:08 So then, if we simply rightclick, it says, did you mean chicken?
17:12 Chickens.
17:12 We can ignore, we can manage ignored words.
17:16 So, I'm going to go chicken and it will just change it for me.
17:19 It doesn't know what Birmingham is, which is fair enough.
17:23 So, let's just ignore that one.
17:25 Now, if we go to the basic text here, again, let's just type chickens wrong.
17:30 That's totally wrong.
17:31 It's not going to get that, but there you go.
17:33 It will do the same thing.
17:35 And then, even on a fusiony one, which obviously looks a little bit different,
17:39 but we type it in there, we still get the little red underline.
17:42 We can rightclick donuts, donuts, ignore, manage words.
17:46 If we go to manage ignored words, it just gives you a list.
17:50 So I've ignored Birmingham in the past.
17:52 So it thinks that's an actual word.
17:54 So then it won't flag it as being an incorrect spelling next time around,
17:58 which is pretty neato, right?
18:00 And continuing talking about words and spelling and other things,
18:03 we're now going to take a look at the new AI speech generator.
18:06 Now, this one is only available within the studio version.
18:09 There are a bunch of new sort of AI features.
18:11 They are still only available within the studio version.
18:14 or trying to remember to put a little studio tag somewhere so that you know.
18:19 But this basically takes the previous thing they
18:22 added which was like converting voices to another voice.
18:26 This allows you to enter text and then use either predefined voices
18:30 or upload your own voice and it will read through the text.
18:34 It's text to speech.
18:35 So let me kind of give you a demo and show you how it works
18:38 and then we'll come back because there's
18:39 something else that I think is worth mentioning.
18:42 So on [snorts] the edit page, let's just click on timeline,
18:45 go AI tools, and we now have speech generator.
18:49 So we get the text input where you type in the thing that you want to be said.
18:55 Voice model.
18:56 There's two that come preloaded.
18:57 Male one, male 2, female one, female 2.
18:59 Or you can do a custom voice and then you actually upload your own sample.
19:04 So I've given it like a 20 second sample of my voice.
19:07 And then we've got things like the speed, the variation,
19:10 the pitch, and we can generate an ID or we can randomize.
19:14 Then we give this a file name.
19:15 We want to add it to the timeline.
19:17 We can choose which track or where it wants to go, all that sort of good stuff.
19:21 And then you click generate.
19:23 Now, it's slightly strange because you can't preview it before you generate.
19:27 So, it's going to take a little bit of tweaking
19:28 of messing around with those sliders to get it to work well.
19:32 But once that's done, which isn't taking too long at all, get rid of that.
19:36 And we now have a speech generator.
19:40 This is called speech gen create voice G1.
19:43 And if we play this back.
19:45 Oh, hello there.
19:45 Welcome to the speech generator.
19:47 This is new this and more interesting
19:49 things in this new version of Dainci Resolve.
19:52 Tiptop taliho farts.
19:54 Now to give you another little example of whether this is any good or not,
19:58 here's the sponsored section of this video.
20:00 Read my me, but an AI version of me.

20:58 Right, back to real Alex farts.
21:01 Right, I'm just editing that sponsored section.
21:03 Most of it is AI.
21:05 There's a little bit of me in there as well,
21:06 so it be interesting to see if you can spot the difference.
21:09 Now, it is a little bit rough around the edges, I must admit.
21:12 But it is also really important to note
21:13 that all of the AI within this new version
21:16 of Dav Vinci Resolve and all the other
21:17 older versions of Dav Vinci Resolve all run locally,
21:21 which is how you're able to run this AI stuff without a subscription.
21:24 Nothing leaves your system.
21:26 So, it's all local.
21:27 The downside to that is obviously they have
21:30 to try and keep it as small as possible.
21:32 Less processing power than if they dumped it all into the cloud,
21:35 which is why potentially this will never be as good
21:37 as some of the services that you'd pay for.
21:40 However, it's local and you can just do it all on your machine.
21:45 Swings and roundabouts.
21:47 Now, let's just switch back because I had something else to say about this.
21:52 It doesn't allow you to dump in a massive script.
21:56 it seems to be relatively limited into how many characters you can actually do.
22:00 I don't know whether that's like a technical limitation
22:02 or that's a design choice because being able to just
22:06 replicate people's voices is it's a kind of a weird
22:08 thing especially if you just dump in text.
22:11 So maybe they're trying to be slightly conscientious with this.
22:14 They're trying to think about that and they're
22:15 just saying just use this for small
22:17 segments because if you've made a mistake and you want to replace something,
22:21 this is really handy for that.
22:23 It's not designed for just being a kind of a faceless YouTube channel
22:27 or whatever where you can run off 20 minute scripts with a spoken voice thing.
22:33 I think that's what they're doing.
22:35 I think they're designing this purposely just to fill
22:38 gaps to make it a useful tool rather than
22:40 a replicate anyone's voice and make them say giant
22:44 things tool which I think is a good decision personally.
22:49 Right.
22:50 Then let's start talking about one of the other
22:52 new features which is the AI Intellisarch.
22:55 Again, it's another studio only feature, but this is such a good use of AI.
22:59 I love this.
23:00 This is the sort of thing from my perspective that AI is perfect for.
23:05 It's a smart search.
23:06 It just allows you to find things much quicker.
23:10 So then you can do less of that stuff
23:12 and just start cracking on building your timeline.
23:16 So to get this up and running, you first need to download an additional package.
23:20 So you click on Dav Vinci Resolve top lefthand corner.
23:22 We've got the extras download manager and then you've got two versions.
23:26 You've got a faster version and a better version.
23:29 So I'm just going to do the faster version.
23:31 Once that's done, you can click on these three little
23:34 dots in the top right hand corner of your media pool.
23:37 There is an Intelly mode and then
23:39 that's where you pick between faster and better.
23:42 So I'm going to go with faster.
23:44 Then we can just go to my top level bin.
23:47 I've got a few bins in here with various different clips.
23:50 There's some of me and then there's some general B-roll.
23:52 If we right click on the master, we have AI tools and we have intellisarch.
23:57 So, let's analyze for search.
24:00 So, [snorts] this is just going to go
24:01 through essentially look at all of the clips
24:03 and use the AI to kind of figure out what's going on in all of those clips.
24:08 Now, I'm using a laptop with a 5090 in it.
24:11 So, this should be pretty good cuz this 5090 has tons and tons of AI goodness.
24:17 Ooh, because I selected also analyze for faces, it's doing a separate run.
24:23 Analyze for facial identification.
24:26 So, if you didn't have faces, you wouldn't need to do this bit.
24:29 And we are done.
24:30 So then to actually use the search,
24:32 you click on your little magnifying glass and over on the left,
24:35 you can go search all where it will search visuals and names.
24:39 But I'm just going to go search visuals
24:41 only to show you exactly what it's doing.
24:43 And if we just type in like man, for example, and then hit enter,
24:47 it's just going to get us all of the clips with a man in it.
24:51 Or we could put car.
24:54 And there you go.
24:55 Here's all the shots that feature a car.
24:58 Or we could do something like tree.
25:01 And here we go.
25:02 Now, you may notice there's these little yellow markers on each of the clips.
25:08 So, let me show you on here because this is really, really cool.
25:11 If I search for man, here's all the clips featuring a man.
25:16 Mostly me because this was like a little vlog thing going on.
25:19 Now, here we've got display full clips.
25:22 So, showing all of the clips,
25:23 but the little yellow markers are showing parts of that clip that feature a man.
25:29 So, if we change this to segments instead, it will show as individual segments.
25:35 These are individual bits of all of those clips which feature a man.
25:41 That's actually a robot dressed up, but it's close enough.
25:45 So, you can just go through and we've got the individual segments,
25:49 which is really, really cool.
25:51 Those shots have a scooter in.
25:53 Is it smart enough to do scooter?
25:56 Yeah.
25:57 Or even robot.
26:01 Cuz this was my footage from CES.
26:03 There you go.
26:04 Here's all the clips of robots.
26:06 Now, if I grab this and drop it on the timeline and it's
26:09 just taken the actual segment with the robot in, which is really, really cool.
26:15 Now, in terms of the faces, if we click on this icon here,
26:18 it will show the face gallery and then we can just go through clicking
26:22 on the individual people and it will show
26:24 us the clips or segments where they appear.
26:26 So, you can see here I appear in these three clips.
26:30 Now, if you want to actually manage these, we can
26:32 click on this little drop down and go manage faces.
26:34 So, there I am.
26:36 Let's call me Alex.
26:39 So, then I appear as Alex.
26:41 Here's all the shots where my face appears.
26:43 And I can just go me.
26:45 Let's actually do the segments.
26:47 There's all the segments of me chatting to the camera.
26:49 So, let's grab that and drop that down here.
26:52 That'll be super cool for like vlogging stuff as well.
26:55 If you've recorded a bunch of stuff and you
26:57 just want the shots of your own face.
26:58 Boom.
26:59 There's all the individual segments of you talking to the camera.
27:02 Oh, and one last thing.
27:04 You can also set up a smart bin.
27:06 So, if you've done a search, so this is a search for me.
27:10 I can click on this icon and it will come up and add
27:12 everything in already saying search for the AI search parameters person's Alex.
27:17 And then I can create.
27:18 Let's call this Alex is in the bin.
27:22 Now, within the smart bins, Alex is in the bin.
27:26 And there we go.
27:26 As I add more footage to this project and I analyze it,
27:31 I don't then need to come and find me to see it all.
27:34 This bin will automatically update with any clips that contain my face.
27:40 Snazzy like this.
27:42 Very clever.
27:43 Oh, and sticking with the media pool for a second,
27:46 smart bins have had some love.
27:49 Now, sticking with those smart bins,
27:51 I've purposely gone and just deleted this actual source clip from my hard drive.
27:56 So, we've got the red, we've got the fact that this clip is now missing.
28:00 Now, previously, it was always a bit of a pain to kind of find all of these.
28:03 If we go to Da Vinci Resolve and then go to preferences,
28:07 and then over on the user side of things down in editing,
28:11 we have these smart bins.
28:13 So, these have always been here.
28:14 They've been handy little smart bins.
28:15 Smart bin for timelines is one that I generally have enabled.
28:18 It's super handy.
28:19 There is also now an automatic smart bin for offline clips.
28:23 So, if we tick that and then click save within the smart bins,
28:27 we have offline clips.
28:28 And if we go here, anything that's missing or offline
28:31 or broken or whatever will just appear within here.
28:35 So, if I don't want them in the project, I can just delete them.
28:38 And it's not just deleted them from the smart bin,
28:40 it's deleted them from the project.
28:42 So, it's a handy one.
28:43 Timeline backup and compare.
28:46 Well, the timeline backups were already there,
28:48 but now here's a nice little addition.
28:50 So you can actually compare them.
28:52 This will be handy.
28:54 So I've got my timeline here.
28:55 If I right click, we can create a timeline backup.
29:00 So let's just call this something.
29:02 Should have left it as it was, but whatever.
29:03 We'll create that backup.
29:04 Now, let's just delete some of the stuff from here.
29:08 We'll close the gaps.
29:09 We can add stuff, delete stuff, do whatever.
29:11 So let's pretend you were doing a project.
29:13 You thought you'd try something, but you're not too sure if you like it or not.
29:16 Then you can simply go back to that timeline,
29:19 right click and there is an option compare with timeline
29:21 backup at the backed up timeline and our current actual timeline.
29:27 You can see here it says timeline one versus
29:29 the name of the backup which I gave stupid name.
29:32 We can view all of the different backups for comparison
29:34 over here and it just shows us the changes.
29:37 So it's basically saying this clip was here now it's not.
29:40 It's been removed and text has been taken off.
29:43 You can just view the two different timelines back.
29:46 You can even actually just play your timeline.
29:48 So I can watch through my current timeline [snorts] and then
29:52 go up here and play back the previously backed up timeline.
29:55 So then I can do a direct comparison between the two to see which one I prefer.
30:00 If I do then prefer obviously the backed up one,
30:03 we simply go back to that timeline, rightclick.
30:06 We can restore a timeline backup, restore that.
30:09 It won't overwrite the new one.
30:10 We just get a timeline one backed up.
30:12 This one is restored.
30:14 You can see timeline one backup.
30:15 And there we go.
30:16 We've got it back there.
30:17 Neat little feature.
30:19 Now, key framing has also had a bit of an update.
30:22 Now, I'll be honest.
30:23 I haven't had a chance to look into this yet.
30:26 I need to really drill in and figure it all
30:27 out and I'll do a proper video talking about key framing.
30:30 But, there has been some improvements.
30:33 So, we now have more control.
30:35 We have new easing options, which is a nice thing.
30:39 And the big thing is the fact
30:41 that if you're using any fusionbased effects or generators,
30:45 text plus or whatever on the edit page,
30:48 you can now amend the key frames for those within the key frame editor.
30:52 So previously it felt very separate.
30:54 You either add key frames on the edit page or key frames on the Fusion page
30:58 and then you couldn't really do a huge
30:59 amount with OFX key frames and whatever else.
31:02 They've tried to bring that all together
31:04 which will make life a little bit easier.
31:07 Now, sticking with key frames just for one second,
31:11 something on the Fusion page any of you motion graphicy people will appreciate.
31:16 You can now pop the key frame editor out, make it big,
31:19 make it full screen, and put it wherever you like.
31:23 Ooh, this one's cool.
31:25 I like this one.
31:26 I didn't know anything about these before, to be completely honest with you,
31:29 but I've done some Googling, done some searching,
31:31 had a little look, and this is a nice addition.
31:33 So, we can now add Lotty files into Da Vinci Resolve,
31:37 both on the edit page and within Fusion.
31:39 Now, if you've never heard of Lotty files, like I hadn't,
31:42 they're these really simple but nicely
31:45 smooth and apparently really lightweight animation files.
31:49 So, they're used a lot on websites because they're such small
31:52 files and they run really well and all that sort of stuff.
31:54 We can now bring those into Da Vinci Resolve.
31:57 I found this website called Lotty Files.
31:59 It's got a bunch of examples.
32:00 You can see they're quite smooth animations.
32:02 This website allows you to download a few per day, some are premium, whatever.
32:06 But I'll put a link down below.
32:07 You can go have a look for yourself.
32:09 I've imported some into this version of Resolve right here.
32:12 A few oddities like you can't play them back.
32:15 If you double click within the media pool, you can't preview them.
32:17 But if we simply grab one, drop it on the timeline,
32:20 it will automatically kind of render itself and show up within the preview.
32:24 So then if we hit play, there we go.
32:26 Now, because they are animations,
32:28 if we drag this out, it won't actually lengthen.
32:31 But because they are all looped, they're designed to be looped.
32:34 It just means you'll copy them and then you can make
32:36 them as long as you like just doing it like so instead.
32:42 Now, I think these are pretty cool.
32:43 It means we're going to get some really smooth,
32:45 nice looking animations from these websites like Lotty
32:48 Files without having to create them ourselves within Fusion.
32:51 Next up, they have added some more stuff into the effects library.
32:55 I haven't got a proper list, so I'm just going to open it up and have a look.
33:01 We'll just see what we can find.
33:02 I might get this wrong because my memory might be bad,
33:05 but let's see if we can spot some of the new things
33:07 they've added to the effects library for all of us to use.
33:10 So, we're in the video transitions.
33:12 All of these are going to be the same.
33:14 The new ones will be in Fusion transitions.
33:17 So, these all look mostly the same.
33:20 Cube horizon reveal.
33:22 That one feels new.
33:23 Oh, that's actually quite snazzy.
33:25 like that one.
33:26 We've got an inverse flash uh logo wipe.
33:29 That's new.
33:30 Mosaic center wipe.
33:32 And these mosaic ones have got some nice funky new icons.
33:36 There's mosaic there.
33:38 Nice page curl.
33:39 That one's been there for a while.
33:41 Pop wobble reverse.
33:43 Nice.
33:44 Ooh, a ripple warp.
33:46 Shash.
33:46 That one's been there for a while.
33:47 A shatter.
33:49 Oh, there you go.
33:50 Cool.
33:50 So, they are actually putting some effort
33:52 into giving us some more video transitions within there.
33:55 There's probably going to be some more titles as well.
33:58 Barrel.
33:59 That looks new.
34:01 Candy.
34:02 Yeah.
34:02 Chalk.
34:03 What else have we got in here?
34:05 A colorful split.
34:07 Lava lamp.
34:08 I like a lava lamp.
34:09 Can't go wrong with one of them.
34:11 Ink bleed.
34:12 Let's play this properly on the timeline.
34:15 Nice little inky effect.
34:16 All of these, as always, you'll be able to open up and then
34:19 customize from within [snorts] the effects library.
34:21 Then within effects,
34:23 I know there is more in here because I've played with them already.
34:25 We've got this one called arrow name,
34:27 which you can just use to kind of, you know, highlight people.
34:30 It's quite a cool little neon sort of thing going on.
34:33 Quite like that one.
34:35 We've got this energy mask.
34:37 We've got a hologram glitch.
34:40 We have these are genuinely really useful.
34:43 So we have this pen stroke arrow.
34:46 Slightly strange that they are effects rather than generators.
34:49 So you have to drop them on an actual clip.
34:51 But what you could do, grab an adjustment clip.
34:54 Then we go to the effects and then
34:56 let's grab something like the penstroke circle.
34:59 Another new one and hit play and it will do us a little circle like so.
35:04 And if we make that shorter, it will animate faster.
35:07 There's a couple of those.
35:08 A line, an arrow, and a circle.
35:10 And that looks about it.
35:12 But all nice additions and they will continue
35:14 to do more and more of these I would imagine.
35:17 Now there is also another dedicated big big
35:20 one big enough that they've they've announced this separately.
35:24 This got its own little mention within the release notes.
35:27 There's a new picture in picture effect.
35:30 So if you're doing any sort of webcam stuff,
35:32 you just want your face in the corner rather than having
35:34 to sort of bolt together a fusion thing to do that.
35:38 There's now a dedicated pictureinpicture effect, right?
35:42 Another studio only one this time, but not AI.
35:45 This is a simple addition.
35:47 Film look creator.
35:48 I like the film look creator.
35:49 I think it's a really nice addition into the Vinc Resolve.
35:52 And they've simply added a new look, a new core look called Aurora.
35:59 Aurora.
36:02 It's quite nice.
36:03 Now, sticking with the color page, there's some other nerdy color page stuff,
36:07 like you can now view your grade in layers rather than nodes.
36:10 I haven't had chance to play with this, but that seems interesting.
36:14 And then there are some other color grady bits as well.
36:17 Now, as mentioned, I haven't taken a look at this yet,
36:19 but a good friend of mine called James Willitz has.
36:22 Go check him out.
36:23 I've linked him down in the description below.
36:25 So, if you're a colorist and you want to know
36:26 all the the juicy color details, go take a look.
36:30 But one thing I have taken a look at on the color page is magic masks.
36:35 They've now added the ability to render magic masks in place.
36:39 So we all know that magic masks are really good.
36:41 They run really well, but they can be a little bit heavy.
36:43 Even after you've done the tracking,
36:45 they can have a bit of an an impact on your performance.
36:48 Now you can just render them in place and it creates like
36:51 a mat which you can use as a key which is handy.
36:55 Next up we have AI Cine Focus.
36:58 Now this is really clever.
36:59 So, right at the very top on the color page, effects library, ciney focus.
37:03 We just drop that straight on our node.
37:06 And straight away, we can see we've got more sort of bokeh.
37:09 We've got more blurry background.
37:11 Now, this will need customizing because you can
37:13 see we've got some weirdness going on, but we
37:16 can just use the little picker and we choose the thing we want to be in focus.
37:21 So, I obviously want this laptop here.
37:24 And then we've got a ton of controls.
37:26 And when I say a ton, I mean a ton.
37:28 So if we go to focus for example, this will show us the bits that are
37:32 in focus and then we can change the focus distance.
37:35 So I obviously want this laptop here.
37:37 The depth of field is really shallow,
37:39 so we want to increase that and maybe just amend this a bit more.
37:45 Let's go something like that.
37:47 And then there's a bunch of other controls in here.
37:50 Track focus to a point.
37:51 We can change the foreground blur.
37:53 We've got depth, which will show us the actual depth map that's being
37:57 used to kind of track our object or whatever it is that we've selected.
38:01 And then we've even got some custom aperture controls.
38:04 So, we can change the bokeh quality, the aperture size, the focus.
38:08 That's the same as the other one.
38:10 Let's scroll down.
38:10 We've got like aperture change, how many blades the aperture has,
38:15 whether it's an anamorphic lens and you
38:17 want that squishy kind of anamorphic bokeh instead.
38:21 Spherical aberrations.
38:23 Tons of controls within here.
38:25 We go to the result and there you go.
38:27 Now, it is relatively heavy to run, but it's running surprisingly well on this.
38:32 And it's a really cool feature, actually.
38:34 It is adding this little extra bokeh here.
38:38 It's actually more noticeable on the foreground because
38:40 our plane of focus is right in the middle here.
38:43 It's doing this genuinely quite realistic looking out of focusy
38:47 bit here and it's blurring the backgrounds a bit more.
38:50 And there you go.
38:51 Now I look like a baby.
38:54 I'm a baby.
38:56 [laughter] This one's weird.
38:59 I get it.
39:00 I do get it.
39:01 If you're doing short films, deaging, there's deaging everywhere.
39:04 I understand it.
39:05 But just for me playing with it looks weird and it's kind of creepy.
39:08 I totally understand why it's here.
39:09 Anyway, it's this new AI face age transformer
39:13 thing where you can adjust the age of people.
39:18 Yeah, now I'm old.
39:19 Look how old I am.
39:22 Let's open it up and have a look.
39:24 So, I've already had a play with this and it's cool.
39:27 It's clever and it's also super creepy.
39:30 So, I'm on the color page.
39:31 I'm going to go to the effects library and search for this face age transformer.
39:36 Drop that on my node.
39:37 Then we've got face detection.
39:39 All of the usual stuff.
39:40 Let's detect faces in the frame.
39:42 It's going to put a box around me.
39:43 And then we will track this through.
39:45 Again, speed will depend on your system.
39:47 This laptop's pretty pokey, so that won't take long.
39:50 So, there we go.
39:51 And then we've got age shift.
39:53 So, first of all, what you need to do is you set the subject's age.
39:57 So, I'm 36.
40:01 And then you actually do an offset.
40:02 So you don't set the age.
40:03 This is the age of the person in the shot.
40:05 And then you go, do I want to make them younger?
40:08 Which makes me look all freshfaced and smooth like a little baby.
40:14 Look at that little baby's face.
40:16 [laughter] And I can play this through.
40:19 It's quite hard to play through.
40:21 It's obviously doing some sort of AI stuff.
40:23 Look at me.
40:24 I'm a baby.
40:25 And then if I want to go a bit older, you go the other way.
40:30 Oh, and I get old.
40:33 Look at me.
40:34 I'm all old.
40:35 Let's turn off the overlay.
40:36 Hit play.
40:37 Let's just not this down.
40:39 I bet that will make it real time or close to better.
40:43 It's quite heavy.
40:44 As mentioned, I'm running this on a 5090 and it's struggling a little bit.
40:47 This is a 4K project though, so it's not the best example, but it's tracking me.
40:51 I've got all these wrinkles.
40:53 My eyes look different.
40:54 It's actually doing a convincing job.
40:58 It's looking into the future.
41:01 I prefer I don't even know if I prefer that one.
41:03 I look like a child, but clever.
41:08 Strange, creepy.
41:10 Not sure I'll like it, but clever.
41:14 Kind of similar.
41:15 Another AI one.
41:16 We've got the face reshaper.
41:18 So, if like me, you have a tiny little head, you can make the head bigger.
41:23 That's a joke.
41:24 I have a giant head.
41:26 So once again, effects library.
41:28 Let's just search for the face reshaper.
41:31 Drop this one on the node.
41:32 And very similar to the other one.
41:34 We detect the faces.
41:35 And then we just analyze.
41:38 And this one's clever.
41:39 It's like the face refinement from previous.
41:42 It will track my jawline, my mouth,
41:44 my nose, my eyes, eyebrows, and everything else.
41:47 Now, let's just turn off the overlay, and we can adjust the face.
41:50 So, anyone that knows me knows I don't need a bigger face,
41:54 but I'm gonna get one anyway.
41:56 And there's obviously very practical uses for this, but you know,
42:01 let's let's just give us There you go.
42:04 Done.
42:05 This is how I look now.
42:07 We can adjust the we can adjust the eyes separately.
42:10 So, let's give myself one really big eye.
42:14 [laughter] Uh, sorry, black magic.
42:19 But this is fun.
42:20 I am having fun.
42:22 There we go.
42:25 And then we've also got [laughter] we got nose.
42:28 Yeah, I don't need a bigger one of them, but we got to get one anyway.
42:30 And we can also do mouth as well.
42:33 And I'm I'm I'm laughing and I'm having fun with this.
42:36 I'm just being a bit silly, but it's actually doing a very clever job.
42:39 It looks like it's just doing a a relatively
42:41 simple sort of warp like your face warper thing,
42:44 but it is tracking it remarkably well.
42:48 So, the microphone here is sort of warping,
42:51 but not as much as, you know, if you just put a blob on it.
42:54 If you look around the edges here,
42:56 it's actually doing quite a good job of controlling
42:59 it very specifically to my face and nothing else.
43:03 Right, let's jump into Fusion because there's one
43:05 thing I want to show you on here.
43:07 It's not relevant to everyone because not everyone does this sort of thing,
43:10 but it's still a cool addition which will hopefully mean
43:13 there are more tools coming for Dav Vinci Resolve made
43:15 by regular people because now doing that is much easier
43:20 because they have done a massive improvement to the macro editor.
43:24 So this allows us to create basically a front end
43:27 of the tool for when it appears on the edit page.
43:30 And this is basically how you make the tools.
43:32 Now they were always really annoying and fiddly and horrible to do.
43:36 Now they're much much easier.
43:38 So we can basically just select the things that I want on the front end.
43:42 So let's say we want the text box styled text.
43:44 We want the font style, the color, maybe the size.
43:48 And there we go.
43:48 And we can see it building.
43:50 Before it was entirely guesswork.
43:53 What we can also do is literally reorder them.
43:57 Click on the font and move that up.
43:59 Click on the size and change that.
44:00 So again, rather than having to figure this out in a text editor later,
44:04 which is what you had to do before, you can do this all live.
44:08 We can add new pages.
44:10 Go.
44:11 This page is going to be called text.
44:12 We'll add a new page.
44:14 Oh, I've added two.
44:16 You get the idea.
44:17 New page.
44:18 And then we can go between them and have a little lookie.
44:21 We've also got separators, spacers, and nests.
44:24 Something else they've made way easier is when we click on these three
44:28 little dots in the top right hand corner or we come over to file,
44:32 we can save to edit templates.
44:35 So, previously you had to save them and then manually move them.
44:39 This is going to be a title.
44:40 So, we can save it straight to my title folder.
44:43 And there we go.
44:44 We can even update this with its own thumbnail.
44:47 If we show in the folder,
44:49 mine's just called macro tool one because I didn't give it a proper name.
44:52 But now it exists within this template folder.
44:54 And if I was to restart Da Vinci Resolve,
44:57 it would then simply appear on the edit page within my titles,
45:02 making the entire process way easier.
45:05 And pretty much the last one,
45:07 bar some small little honorable mentions, we have a new modifier.
45:12 We have a fair light animator modifier.
45:15 Now, what that essentially means is within Fusion,
45:18 you can drive movements or animations via Fairlite, aka via your audio.
45:25 So, I've got a simple clip on my timeline here.
45:28 I'm going to open this in the Fusion page,
45:31 and let's just do this with a real simple text.
45:33 So, we'll smash a text box on there.
45:35 Go to text.
45:36 Let's just put hello.
45:38 Then, if we rightclick size, let's do on size.
45:42 Modify width.
45:43 The new option is simply called Fairlight Animator.
45:46 Now, straight away, let's jump over to the modifiers.
45:49 But if we hit play, right, three jobs.
45:51 We're going to go explore CS for the first time today.
45:55 As I talk, it's going to change the size
45:57 because we've put the modifier on the size.
46:00 Now, it says analysis and it's level.
46:02 So, it's measuring the level of the audio.
46:04 And then we can choose the scale and the offset.
46:06 So, scale is kind of like the default size
46:09 in mine and scale is how much movement there is.
46:12 So, let's kind of make this a bit more subtle and go with something like that.
46:18 Pretty cool.
46:18 And that kind of covers it.
46:20 That's kind of the bulk of the things that are
46:23 available within this new version of Dav Vinci Resolve,
46:25 Da Vinci Resolve 21 beta.
46:28 What are you most excited for?
46:29 What are you going to crack open first and have a little play with?
46:32 What don't you like?
46:33 What would you like to see more of?
46:35 I'd love to know your thoughts and feelings.
46:38 Thanks for watching.
46:41 I'll see you in the next dot.
