Lamborghini Temerario is Perfecting the Hybrid Formula!
Auto Focus
0:00 All right, this is actually the second
0:01 time I'm shooting this video because my opinions
0:02 on this car have changed so much since the first time that I shot this.
0:06 So, take two.
0:07 Uh, Lamborghini.
0:10 When I say Lamborghini, you probably picture a certain type, right?
0:14 Like, every car has a type.
0:16 There is the Ferrari type.
0:18 There's the Corvette has a type, right?
0:20 Obviously, Lamborghini is a type.
0:22 And I've never really thought of myself as a Lamborghini type ever, actually.
0:26 I mean, I've driven their cars, clearly.
0:27 you guys know about them, but I don't know.
0:29 I've never really thought that I would be interested in owning a Lamborghini,
0:34 but I've gotten to test the Tamario for the past couple days,
0:37 their newest hybrid, and it's crazy.
0:41 Lamborghini only makes hybrids now.
0:44 They have gotten to get really focused on hybrids,
0:46 and it turns out they've gotten really good at it.
0:49 And uh this Tamario, this thing right here,
0:52 is their newest and latest, and I would say greatest.
0:55 And uh I like a lot of things about it.
0:58 There's still some things that I really don't like.
1:00 So, I'll show you that, too.
1:02 But damn, this thing's good.
1:03 So, here it is.
1:04 You could consider it the Huracan replacement.
1:06 And the Huracan is legendary, obviously.
1:08 So, they don't want to get rid of any
1:10 of the aesthetics and the things that made the Huracan so successful,
1:14 but they also obviously have a lot new going on here.
1:16 So, the basics are this is a mid-enine supercar.
1:20 is all-wheel drive and that comes from a 4 liter twin turbo V8 in the back
1:26 and then two electric motors at the front plus another one in the gearbox.
1:31 Altogether they make combined I think the number is around 900 horsepower.
1:37 Uh so it can do 0 to 60 in the twos
1:40 and obviously a 10ish/4er mile and also this car costs $500,000.
1:47 I think it starts a bit below that.
1:49 This one's fully loaded, but half a million dollar car.
1:52 So, for that price, of course,
1:53 there are a lot of things to really like about the Timario.
1:55 I'll speed through some of my favorite things.
1:57 Starting at the front, aesthetically,
1:59 these headlights are kind of a signature of this car.
2:02 Now, you can see how they kind of have this hood above them from the top.
2:05 Because the car is so low,
2:06 you hardly ever actually see the tail light, but it's down in there.
2:11 And it looks really mean and aggressive from the front.
2:13 And that's also the DRL and the blinker, the radiators, the whole thing.
2:17 It looks great from the front.
2:19 Aesthetically, I love it.
2:20 It's got this red pin striping on the front of this carbon fiber diffuser.
2:23 And there is a lot of carbon optioned on this car.
2:28 You look at the side, it's it's a pretty familiar silhouette.
2:30 You got the red pin striping here, red pin striping down here on the side.
2:35 It says Tamario over here.
2:38 Big air vents functional on the side.
2:41 And the hidden uh door handle right underneath there.
2:44 More functional arrow up here.
2:45 more functional arrow in here.
2:47 The engine back here, we'll get to that in a second.
2:49 It's a brand new engine that revs to 10,000 RPM, but then the back.
2:55 Damn, I think this is the best back of a car they've ever made.
3:00 Is that that might be a crazy take,
3:01 but I think this is an incredible looking back of a car.
3:03 Like, this is the view you'll normally have right about here, right?
3:06 If you're behind it, and it's really quick,
3:07 so you'll probably spend a lot of time behind it.
3:09 First things first, big center-mounted exhaust up at the top.
3:13 A ton of open space.
3:15 Like there's a lot of air moving through here.
3:16 You see the backs of the radiators.
3:18 The lights look really good.
3:20 That's made of carbon.
3:21 And then the rear diffuser kind of pinches in in the middle here,
3:25 leaving this huge amount of exposed tire on the back.
3:30 Couple thoughts on that.
3:31 One, I think it looks really good.
3:33 Kind of looks like a jet.
3:35 Uh, also the reverse light is down there, kind of like race cars.
3:39 Two, I'm not sure how legal this is because three,
3:43 this throws up a ton of rocks and chips and stones,
3:47 and whatever you're driving through, if you're behind the Tamario,
3:52 you better hope you have PPF or something cuz you're going to be feeling that.
3:54 But either way, aesthetically, this thing is awesome.
3:57 There is a ton of carbon fiber up here
3:59 on this spoiler and this whole rear deck lid.
4:02 All of this right here is optional carbon.
4:04 And I think this option together is like $80,000 or something like that.
4:09 So you're going to see a lot of Tamarios that don't have this much carbon,
4:12 but still looks great.
4:13 You can see the V8 and the firing order of the cylinders down in there.
4:17 It looks really good.
4:18 Okay, so lots to like about the aesthetics of the Tamario.
4:22 I will point out for anybody wondering that there
4:24 is a decent amount of front trunk space.
4:27 You grab this little latch right here and pull it to open.
4:30 And this short hood sort of flips open.
4:32 And that is enough room for exactly what I've needed
4:35 for this day trip out to California to review this car,
4:39 which is a duffel bag and a backpack and a tiny bit more on top.
4:43 That's about all you can fit in there.
4:45 And that's about all I need.
4:46 So great.
4:48 There's just so much functional arrow here.
4:50 Look, you can see the air comes in right at that front splitter and shoots
4:54 up at the top to keep the front of the car stuck to the ground.
4:56 There's a lot going on.
4:57 Okay, for that money, you would think that you'd love the interior as well.
5:02 And this is where it starts to get a little bit more nuanced with my take.
5:06 So, let's get inside the Tamario.
5:10 So, in here, it starts to get racy, sporty Lamborghini, as you'd expect it.
5:15 I'm sitting in these really stiff carbon fiber bucket seats that look amazing,
5:19 but are uh not heated or ventilated or power moving.
5:23 They are manually adjusting and that's normal for buckets
5:27 but not super comfortable for driving for a long time.
5:30 Uh and then you have this new looking interior
5:33 here with the steering wheel with carbon fiber on it.
5:36 The Italian flag colors are everywhere.
5:38 The hexagons, lots of Alcantara and then also the screens.
5:42 So this is the primary display.
5:44 You've got the driver display back here.
5:46 And you've got a secondary display for the passenger over there.
5:49 Lots of carbon.
5:50 I have a huge amount of carbon in the door here.
5:53 This is part of that package that I said cost like $80,000.
5:57 So, you kind of can't miss it.
5:59 Uh, again, you'll see a lot of Timarios that don't
6:01 have all of this, but you see the Lamborghini patterns everywhere.
6:04 You see the speakers in the door.
6:07 All of that is is very pretty and very race car.
6:11 But, uh, I don't love all of this.
6:13 See, if you've been watching the channel for more than a couple of days,
6:15 you've already seen we uploaded our ZR1
6:18 review for that Corvette right over there.
6:22 And that is an incredible performance car in a lot of ways similar to this one.
6:26 Maybe even competing against this one.
6:28 Track focused straight from GM.
6:31 But that is a very livable uh functional, practical interior.
6:37 Uh this one, not so much.
6:38 Like the Corvette had cup holders.
6:40 Lamborghinis.
6:42 Not so much a fan of cup holders.
6:43 Not really any of those in the middle of this car.
6:46 I also would really like a place to put my phone in most cars.
6:49 And while these are the two most likely spots for you,
6:53 again, the Corvette had wireless chargers and all that.
6:55 This is just a spot to put your phone, which is it's fine.
6:59 It kind of slides around.
7:00 It doesn't charge or anything.
7:01 And you could plug it in with one of these USBC ports,
7:03 but it's not very readable.
7:04 And then this spot back here.
7:06 And then there is no storage in here.
7:08 That's just kind of that's it for your phones.
7:10 But the steering wheel, there is a lot going on.
7:12 I do like most of it.
7:13 I like that it's leather and has the carbon
7:15 up here and then the 12:00 red dash here.
7:17 Uh but I hate this.
7:20 I hate this.
7:21 These are the blinkers on the steering wheel.
7:23 And I I never really love blinkers on the steering wheel.
7:27 You can get used to it if you have the left one
7:28 on the left side and the right one on the right side somewhere,
7:31 but they put them both on the left side and you like tap it
7:35 to blink three times or hold it to put the blinker on and then hit off.
7:38 I just I hate this.
7:40 This is my least favorite blinkers probably in any car, which is a shame.
7:44 But, you know, a lot of this is just me nitpicking.
7:46 Like I said, I'm not the Lamborghini type.
7:48 You don't have to appease me.
7:49 There's lots of people who buy the Corvette who want it to be more practical.
7:52 This is a much more raw, aggressive version of that car.
7:56 So Miles is going to talk about driving it in a second,
7:58 but let me talk you through a little bit
7:59 of the tech that makes this such an interesting hybrid.
8:02 So foot on the brake, Lamborghini push to start.
8:05 So first thing you notice is it starts up fully electric and silent
8:10 in EV mode and everything's blue and that's the default for this car.
8:15 No cold start needed yet because you might want
8:17 to sneak out of your garage and maybe a little
8:19 bit out of your neighborhood before firing up that 10,000
8:22 RPM V8 uh and not waking up your neighbors.
8:25 So, that's actually a useful feature and people do drive their Lamborghinis
8:28 in front-wheel drive and fully electric mode because of that feature.
8:31 So, that's nice.
8:32 And then from there, this hybrid system is pretty intuitive.
8:35 You have your drive mode selector over here and then
8:38 your EV mode change over here on the right.
8:41 So, if I want to switch from EV mode to strata or street mode,
8:45 it will switch back and forth between electric and gas.
8:48 And then on the right, you can switch between hybrid and recharge.
8:52 So, it has enough battery, like I said, to drive on fully electric,
8:55 but you can either choose to plug it in or recharge it with the engine.
9:00 So, you might never have to plug it in.
9:01 Just switch it to recharge mode.
9:05 You'll hear that engine actually fire up and now
9:08 you'll be able to recharge the battery with the engine.
9:10 So, ideally, you never actually have to plug this car in.
9:13 Just treat it like a gas car.
9:14 It's a hybrid, and that's great.
9:16 Of course, on the left, you also have sport mode.
9:20 You can hear the valves open up a little bit
9:22 and Corsa and Corsa ESC off are all available to you.
9:26 All the colors change.
9:27 It gets a little more aggressive.
9:28 The shift logic changes.
9:30 A whole bunch changes with driving this car.
9:32 Now again, there is a lot to like about driving the Tamario,
9:36 but the software is not one of those things.
9:39 This is the screen you have
9:40 for your your main Lamborghini built software experience.
9:44 And it just it looks I mean I get that they want the like
9:48 fun cool holo graphic type of aesthetic thing but it does kind of look
9:51 ancient like that's your uh it's intuitive
9:54 but that's your temperature control or this which
9:58 takes a while to get into your temperature and fan speed stuff here.
10:03 So that's kind of silly.
10:04 You can do your uh your custom control shortcuts over here on the right.
10:08 Or you can use these built-in settings, which are which are which are these.
10:15 I don't know.
10:15 This is the type of thing I will instantly put wireless Android Auto
10:18 or Apple CarPlay over the top of and never think about it again because again,
10:22 there's no place to put my phone uh and see it.
10:25 Well, I just This is a car that like
10:26 forces you to use Android Auto or Apple CarPlay.
10:29 So, you know, maybe this is a car that you never even really
10:32 think about any of that stuff because
10:33 you're too focused on the driving experience, which is batshit insane.
10:39 This is okay.
10:40 In the lineup, you can think of this as like the little brother to the Revoto,
10:45 which is their big NAV12 hybrid.
10:47 So, you know, Ferrari had the SF90 and the 296.
10:50 This would be more of a comp to the 296.
10:53 And I like a lot of what it does
10:55 in that category of being smaller and more nimble.
10:59 Uh, first of all, it's ridiculously quick in a straight line.
11:03 In any sort of driving situations, it's unbelievably quick.
11:07 Revving it to 10,000 is something that you'll hear Miles talk about in a minute,
11:12 but it just never gets old.
11:14 I get it.
11:16 And I mean, I I was obviously driving it
11:19 in the canyons in a lot of the footage that you'll see,
11:21 but we were driving it at night,
11:22 and it turns out it shoots flames, like 4ft flames from the factory.
11:28 This is a normal exhaust.
11:29 People are going to straight pipe this thing and it's going to do crazier stuff,
11:32 but this is a a very rowdy raw version of, you know, a hybrid.
11:38 Like, you don't see hybrids that have
11:40 this rowdy raw experience like this very often.
11:42 I would say the 296 is much more refined if it wants to be.
11:46 This doesn't have a refined chill mode.
11:49 So, anyway, this is this is a lot of car.
11:51 I' I've I've come to really understand it much more now
11:54 that I've spent more time with it and actually driven it.
11:57 But, uh, for those driving details and for those dynamics notes,
12:02 take it away, Miles.
12:16 There is so much going on in this car.
12:21 So, I mean, where do we begin?
12:23 We've got a twin turbo V8 that revs to 10,000 RPM.
12:28 And this is a hot V,
12:29 which means the turbos are supposed to sit inside the valley of the engine.
12:33 But the turbos are so big that they won't fit.
12:36 So, they just have to sit on top of the valley.
12:39 And the turbos have electronically controlled wastegates,
12:41 so lag isn't really a big concern here.
12:45 [laughter] Oh my god.
12:48 There's an axial flux motor in the transmission.
12:52 It's a transverse 8-speed dual clutch similar
12:55 to what you have in the Lamborghini Revoto.
12:58 It's a flat plane crankshaft that's using a very
13:01 similar copper alloy to what you've got in Ducati superbikes.
13:06 This this is easily one of the most complex interesting engines
13:10 that's ever been put in a modern supercar from an engineering standpoint.
13:14 And what that results in is what you're hearing.
13:17 It really does just seem like a big V8 superbike with massive
13:21 turbos and a hybrid system shoved inside of a mid-enine platform.
13:25 And who's to say if a setup like this is going to be reliable in the long term,
13:30 I couldn't tell you.
13:31 But what I can tell you is that this is an incredibly incredibly fun
13:37 car to drive because of the way they've set up the gearing for this car.
13:41 The 10,000 RPM in combination with the gearing allows
13:45 you to really just work your way through the gears.
13:50 That was like 6,000 RPM.
13:52 I think it really allows you to kind of enjoy the process
13:56 of reaching that red line kind of like chewing your favorite meal very slowly.
14:01 It's a it's it's a nice experience and really allows
14:04 you to feel like you're getting something out of the experience.
14:06 It's a neat hybrid system.
14:07 You've got a small battery giving you like 4ish miles of electric only range.
14:14 Uh it's really just to be able to leave your garage
14:16 in the morning without upsetting your neighbors if you have any.
14:19 But from a dynamics perspective,
14:22 it really does give this car an instantaneous shove.
14:25 Lamborghini's biggest task with this car was trying
14:28 to come up with a way to have a new engine that not only pleases those who were
14:33 fans of the naturally aspirated V10 and the Huracan,
14:36 but also take things a step further, make this car even more thrilling,
14:41 more engaging, more Lamborghini as far as the the experience.
14:45 And I truly do think that this car doesn't need the hybrid system,
14:50 but I'm not mad that it's here as well.
14:52 But it has also made this car incredibly heavy.
14:55 I think this car might be just within
14:58 100 or 150 pounds of the Lamborghini Revoto, which is so much larger.
15:03 Has a massive naturally aspirated V12.
15:07 Yet, this car almost weighs the same.
15:10 Uh, but to be honest,
15:12 you don't really feel the mass the same way you do in the Lamborghini Roaldto.
15:16 This truly does feel nimble in the corners.
15:19 It's easy to control.
15:20 It's easy to drive.
15:22 It is a little twitchy and a part of that is
15:24 due to the steering feel which I'll talk about in a second.
15:26 But it is genuinely confidence inspiring.
15:30 It doesn't feel like it's held back by the weight
15:32 because I mean 4200 lb with 900 horsepower.
15:36 I think that that's that's a nice ratio I think.
15:39 But the steering feel it's probably my least
15:41 favorite thing about this car for sure.
15:43 It is feather light.
15:45 It truly is just so light.
15:48 And when just like accelerating in a straight line,
15:50 sometimes you feel the steering wheel kind of get a little
15:53 twitchy and lighten up in a way that I don't really like.
15:56 Um I'm not sure if Lamborghini did that on purpose
15:58 to kind of give this car a sense of like edge.
16:02 Um but I would have really loved
16:04 for this car to have a bit heavier steering feel.
16:07 This transmission, 8-speed transverse, dual clutch with an axial flux motor.
16:14 Unlike the McLaren Ruro, which also features an axial flux motor in the gearbox,
16:18 this one actually has a mechanical reverse gear,
16:21 so you don't have to rely on electric power to go into reverse, which is good.
16:26 They've got that signature
16:27 Lamborghini transmission responsiveness programmed in.
16:31 On every shift in Corsa mode, the chassis snaps.
16:34 It's violent, but it's also not laggy.
16:37 You're not experiencing those cuts in power like
16:39 you do in like a Lamborghini Aventador SVJ.
16:44 Perfect for the street, for performance driving, perfect for the racetrack.
16:49 Uh, very, very good transmission.
16:52 10 out of 10.
16:52 No notes.
16:53 From a driving perspective, nothing's really changed as far as negatives go.
16:58 It's still not comfortable to drive in long distances.
17:01 It's kind of jerky unless you're driving in an electric mode around town.
17:06 It's super low to the ground.
17:07 You know, you're constantly paranoid about scraping this car
17:11 when entering a driveway or a slight incline.
17:14 It's got all the same cons that come with having a Lamborghini.
17:19 Obviously, the tech is not where it could be.
17:22 But my biggest fear going into driving this car was
17:24 me being worried that it was going to be Porschei,
17:27 which means hyper competent on a technical level and dynamically excellent, uh,
17:32 but just lacking the theatrics and all the things
17:35 that we've come to know and love about Lamborghini.
17:38 But [laughter] after driving this car,
17:41 I don't know why I was ever worried to be honest.
17:44 It may not have the sensationalism,
17:47 the theatrics of like a Diablo GTR or a Mercy SV or an Aventador SVJ,
17:54 but this might be peak Lamborghini drivers car.
17:58 Everything they've done from an engineering perspective has made this probably
18:03 the most enthusiast focused Lamborghini
18:06 for on-road driving that I've ever driven.
18:12 Yeah, this this is this is one of those ones.
18:16 But that's about it.
18:18 Uh got to go back to the cold New Jersey now, which I'm not super excited for.
18:25 Talk to you guys in the next
