38:33 The answer is I do not know.

38:35 But what I can tell you is when there's no one near rockets anymore,

38:39 we're probably going to fly pretty soon.

38:41 I'll kind of share a little bit about how the procedures will go this morning

38:44 and then we'll start flying rockets and we'll have a lot of fun today.

38:46 So, what we'll do is when everyone's away from the rockets,

38:49 I'll go through a quick safety briefing

38:52 similar to what was discussed yesterday morning.

38:55 Then we'll go into the national anthem and then we'll start flying rockets.

38:58 Does that seem fair?

39:04 And then uh we'll actually have a special guest uh

39:06 push the button for our first rocket that will fly.

39:09 So I'll I'll share that right before we get started.

39:12 So uh you'll see here just a few I'd say less than 15 minutes,

39:16 but again really don't exactly know when we'll get started,

39:19 but it'll be here pretty shortly.

44:34 kicking off 2026 student launch initiative.

44:43 I want to go through a couple of safety briefings just for some

44:46 of the folks that didn't hear it

44:47 yesterday and then for our guests and spectators.

44:51 I mean, special special folks here just so they understand like what's going on.

44:56 If you hear if you hear a short burst, that means you want to pay attention,

45:04 be aware that there might be something in the area.

45:06 If you hear a long burst, that means there's something really close by.

45:14 So, when that happens, you want to make sure you point at it.

45:16 So, we're going to practice.

45:18 Everybody point at John Ehart.

45:21 I know it's not good to point at people, but we want to practice that.

45:24 So, if something is coming in, you want to be able to point

45:27 at it and then let your neighbor know in the event they're not paying attention.

45:30 Hopefully, no rockets are going to be in this area when it's coming in.

45:33 But just want to make sure everybody

45:35 understands from a safety uh procedural standpoint.

45:38 Additionally, if the rocket's coming in and it's near you and you

45:42 have nothing to do with the team nor project, don't touch it.

45:45 It's all set up for that team.

45:47 Just let it be.

45:48 Don't bother with it.

45:50 Also, we've got time today.

45:51 So, don't like run around and put yourself

45:53 where you fall or trip or hurt yourself.

45:56 Just walk to it where you need to be.

45:57 Make sure you kind of stay out of the area where we're flying rockets.

46:04 Make sure you have sunscreen on it.

46:05 So, we got the sun out today.

46:22 So, the next part is I'm actually going to turn it over

46:25 to Alyssa with NASA to do an introduction for our national anthem singer.

46:41 day for NASA's 26th annual student launch challenge.

46:46 We're here at Bragg Farms,

46:48 which is just a few miles away from NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center.

46:52 Today we're going to watch several middle school, high school,

46:54 and college teams launch their high-powered rockets

46:57 that they have spent several months designing, building, and testing.

47:01 So, to blast off today's competition,

47:03 I would like to welcome North Carolina State

47:06 student Ben Radspinner to perform our national anthem.

47:16 Oh, say can you see by the dawn early light

47:26 what so proudly we held at the twilight last gleaming

47:36 whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight

47:47 or the ram parts we watched were so gallently streaming.

47:57 And the rockets red glare, the bombs bursting in air,

48:07 gave proof through the night, that our flag was still there.

48:17 Oh, say does that star spangled banner yet wave?

48:28 Or the land of the free and the home of the brave.

48:48 Well done.

48:48 Thank you, Ben.

48:49 I very much appreciate that.

49:00 So, we're about to just go ahead and get started

49:02 uh with our first volley or first grouping of rockets.

49:05 They're going to fly from our from our uh

49:07 university and uh other university and high school team.

49:12 So, I'm very excited for this first group,

49:14 but I do want to just make uh make mention that we have a special special guest,

49:19 special VIP VIP guest here in the house that's

49:21 going to push the button for our first rocket launch.

49:24 This is Miss Elaine Hoe is our NASA administrator, Office of STEM Management.

49:29 So, thank you so much for being here, Elaine,

49:31 and and uh we're excited for you to uh push the first button.

49:35 So, for those that don't know, I'm Gerald here.

49:37 I'm gonna be kind of your guide for the day today,

49:39 and we're gonna launch some rockets.

49:41 So, what I'll do is I'll announce what the the team is,

49:44 what the project is, the rocket name, what the motor is,

49:48 the payload, how many are on the team, some fun team notes,

49:52 who to thank, and I'll say a special column of Gerald's extra notes.

49:56 So, we'll see uh what some of the teams

49:58 have shared or what I've learned in looking

49:59 online and we're going to have some fun

50:01 and we'll be able to connect with the teams, with our spectators,

50:04 with the families, with our sponsors,

50:06 and those listening online to understand all the work and all the hours and all

50:11 the traveling the teams have done to put

50:13 into this to have a special event today.

50:15 So, hopefully all understands.

50:18 We're going to have some rocket launches today.

50:19 So, on the and how we're going to do is we're going to watch the back row first,

50:23 the furthest rocket to the left.

50:25 So that rocket appears to be white and purple.

50:27 So this very first team, this is a James Madison University.

50:34 Very civil group.

50:35 They're just doing a nice polite golf clap.

50:37 That's good.

50:38 The name of the rocket is called Sirius 1.

50:41 It's flying on an Aerotch L2200 Mojave Green.

50:44 So this is a This motor's got a little punch to it.

50:47 The team name is called JMU.

50:50 This is actually a smaller team of nine, so they had to do a lot of extra work.

50:54 The payload name, it actually is called Dirt,

50:56 which stands for Duke's Integrated Retrieval Tool.

51:00 For those that know,

51:01 there's a lot of fun like acronyms these teams have come up with.

51:04 So, there's the first of many.

51:05 On their additional payload notes,

51:08 they are using a mass simulator that represents Duke integrated retrieval tool,

51:12 dirt, that collects 50 milliliters of soil for a pH

51:16 analysis and dwelling unit for the stem knots.

51:18 And they call that dust.

51:20 when they're uh when they're when they're atmospherically

51:22 enclosed within the house and then within their own

51:25 fun team supplied notes during their VDF

51:28 the flight resulted in rocket landing on someone's house.

51:31 Uh oh, not good.

51:32 But they made it on the local news.

51:34 So I guess that's one way to be popular.

51:36 So um and they did uh there was an article written about the JMU SLI team.

51:41 Additionally, the team wants to thank Mr.

51:43 Chuck Nef.

51:44 He's actually a longtime NAR member.

51:45 Actually serves on the leadership team.

51:47 Thank you, Chuck.

51:48 Mr.

51:48 John, Mr.

51:49 John Wild, the machine shop manager, Dr.

51:51 Woodruff, our facility adviser, and Vas, the local launch club.

51:55 Now, here's the fun stuff.

51:56 So, a couple extra notes I was able to capture is the team

52:00 had a hand in everyone had a hand in painting the rocket.

52:02 The team wanted to paint a lighter rocket so it did not overheat the components.

52:07 Okay, that'll work.

52:08 And then they actually painted in their school colors.

52:11 Someone on their team named Jackson,

52:13 he can juggle and he can solve a Rubik's cube in one minute.

52:17 So, anyone's got a Rubik's cube handy?

52:19 He can do it.

52:20 James can play the French horn and Gino is looking

52:22 to get a pilot license and he can or no,

52:24 he has a pilot license and can do spin training on his airplane.

52:28 So there you go folks.

52:29 This is James Madison University with special guest Ms.

52:32 Elaine Hoes the button pusher.

52:36 We have everyone watching.

52:38 We're going to launch this first rocket in five 4 3 2 1 ignition.

52:53 Good boost on that one.

52:54 Probably on its way to 4,000 ft, I'd say.

52:58 Starting to come over the top, arcing over.

53:05 There is an event.

53:07 There's its drogue.

53:08 There is its backup.

53:09 You'll see that additional smoke because

53:11 they actually have two electronics on board.

53:13 And right now, it's under its drogue parachute.

53:20 And then at a determined altitude, the main will come out.

53:22 So any it could be anywhere between 1,00 and 500 ft.

53:29 So right now we're about 1,000 ft up.

53:32 So we should be seeing the main here any moment.

53:37 And this team did run two drugs.

53:38 There's its main parachute.

53:44 Looks like everything worked as it's performed.

53:46 Oh, and there's another parish.

53:47 Oh, there it is.

53:49 That's what they wanted to see.

53:50 All right.

53:52 Good way to start off student launch 26th annual in 2026.

53:56 Well done.

54:01 And it's in front of the tree, so they will be able to easily retrieve that one.

54:08 Okay, the next team, this is going to be Purdue.

54:10 Purdue University.

54:13 They're a little bit more excited.

54:14 The rocket name is called Vapor Wave.

54:16 This is flying on a Loki L41482 LB.

54:21 The name of their team is called Purdue Space Program.

54:24 That's a big team of 31 members on that team.

54:27 Their project is also called dirt like the James Madison,

54:32 but they have an S at the end.

54:33 So, they're different.

54:34 This stands for drilling instrument for retaining and testing soil.

54:39 And with this one, they have the payload has a custommade coiling drill

54:44 which drills into the soil and collects a 75 milliliter uh sample after landing.

54:50 And for those that don't know,

54:51 this competition is built around collecting soil and sending the data

54:55 back and then reviewing it to make sure it's confirmed.

54:58 Uh this team also has a sensor

55:00 that measures two correct characteristics of the sample,

55:03 pH level and electrical conductivity.

55:06 The payload um looks like deploys alongside the rocket during the main parachute

55:12 so it'll still be attached but off to the side at 700 feet.

55:15 It can be identified with the orientation

55:17 legs which will spring open after deployment.

55:20 The payload is 35 in in length and weighs a hefty

55:24 12 pounds made of aluminum and 3D printed uh plastic.

55:29 About Purdue space program, this team has done two test flights before today.

55:34 Uh their launch site is north of a campus near a cow farm.

55:38 During their test in early March,

55:40 the the rocket ended up landing in the cow farm.

55:44 While initially frightened by the rocket and brightly colored parachute,

55:48 the cows bravely approached the rocket.

55:50 After landing to inspect it,

55:52 one of the team members has a really good photo of it.

55:54 And yes, if anyone was wondering, no cows were harmed in this.

55:58 The team does want to thank their wants to uh

56:01 thank Purdue University and L3 Harris for sponsoring their team,

56:05 the family and team members for supporting

56:07 them through the ninth month project cycle.

56:09 And then John Echart for his love and commitment for USLI.

56:13 I would agree.

56:14 Oh, look at that.

56:15 John even took his cap off.

56:17 He's impressed.

56:18 Hard to impress that man.

56:20 Now, some extra notes I saw is one of the team members

56:24 likes to dress like a clown for Halloween and is very loud.

56:27 just like a loud voice.

56:29 And that's our friend Ryan.

56:30 Ryan also doesn't touch the rocket and he does the Sims.

56:34 For for anyone that also knows about Purdue,

56:37 they've had the most astronauts come through that university.

56:39 They've had more than 36 astronauts come from that university.

56:43 Also, what's unique about this uh Purdue University,

56:46 they actually have a unicycling and juggling club that is dated back to 1969.

56:51 And yes, Ryan can do that as well.

56:53 So, we have a clear sky.

56:55 We have Oh, we have a public service announcement.

57:05 So, a quick public service announcement with your easy ups.

57:10 Not the steak you eat, the steak you put in the ground.

57:16 has picked up a little bit and I guess they're already starting to blow away.

57:19 So, just for those in the back and you actually want to be out from under

57:22 your easyups right now or your your uh tent shaped covers to watch the rocket.

57:26 So, back onto the I guess regular uh proceedings.

57:30 So, we're going to actually launch now the Purdue rocket.

57:32 So, this is on the far back pad, the second or the furthest left rocket.

57:37 So, now we have a clear sky, we have a clear range.

57:39 We're going to launch this in five, four, three, two, one, ignition.

59:21 Wow, Purdue really wanted to put on a show.

59:22 A slow takeoff, a suspenseful main deployment, but all looks good.

59:31 Continuing on, so the next rocket we have the University of Alabama Huntsville.

59:39 The local team here, the name of their uh rocket is called Axiom.

59:44 This is also flying on Aerotch L2200 Mojave Green.

59:48 And their team name is called Charger Rocket Works.

59:52 And on this team, they have 23 members.

59:55 Their payload name is called EVE.

59:58 And our payload acts as a nose cone on the vehicle.

1:00:01 And during the descent,

1:00:02 the nose cone has panels that will deploy before landing.

1:00:07 Once landed, the arugger will upright and drill

1:00:09 into the ground and collect and test our soil sample.

1:00:13 Our stem knots sit at top the payload and have great

1:00:18 views or great views through windows in their or in their habitat.

1:00:22 Oh, so they can see all this.

1:00:23 Excellent.

1:00:24 Uh with the fun team notes, our STEM knots names are David Linberry,

1:00:30 Jason Winningham, Jennifer English,

1:00:35 and then actually our launch director, John Lingall.

1:00:38 So John, good luck, my friend.

1:00:43 Uh additional who to thank, we want to thank our adviser, Dr.

1:00:46 Lineberry, our team mentor Jason Winningham, and all of our sponsors, mentors,

1:00:51 alumni, friends, and family who have supported our team along the way.

1:00:56 Additionally, uh the challenge,

1:00:58 there was a challenge with the PDR and design team had different parameters,

1:01:01 but they fixed it and they actually completed all this within a week.

1:01:05 The rocket was painted by Max and Lewis,

1:01:07 and the team voted on the paint and even

1:01:09 did a scaledown version prior to his final paint job.

1:01:12 This is the senior design for mechanical and aerospace engineering program.

1:01:17 Um, this is the most funding the team has ever had.

1:01:20 So, well done there in getting funding.

1:01:21 That's always important.

1:01:23 The model and simulation team, oh, this is fun.

1:01:25 The model and simulation team are line dancers.

1:01:29 So, you'll have to show us that later.

1:01:31 The uh be their their mentor is a beekeeper and spearfisher.

1:01:35 So, a man of many talents.

1:01:37 They do have one electrical engineer on the team.

1:01:40 And then William likes to make garden tracker tractors and has awards on it.

1:01:45 Two of their team members actually own goats and they've

1:01:48 named their rocket based off of the movie Wall-E.

1:01:50 And if you look at their rocket payload,

1:01:52 it does look like Eve the character, which I can confirm.

1:01:56 So let's go with University of Huntsville, Alabama and Axiom.

1:02:01 Clear sky and a clear range.

1:02:03 We're going to launch this in five, four, three, two, one.

1:02:10 See a light good straight boost on that.

1:02:17 You see a little bit of the tracking smoke

1:02:19 off the motor starting to come over the top.

1:02:25 Should see an event here pretty soon.

1:02:31 Drove parachute is out.

1:02:37 It's in front of the clouds.

1:02:38 I got it.

1:02:39 So you still see a little bit of the tracking smoke off the motor.

1:02:42 So a little bit of a smaller drogue.

1:02:44 So this one's coming in a little quicker.

1:02:46 That's okay.

1:02:46 It minimizes it distance of where it lands.

1:02:54 So what it is is the smaller drove parachute helps get it down quick and then

1:02:58 at a a set altitude the bigger parachute comes out

1:03:04 and then it'll make it land really soft and safe.

1:03:08 We would need a parachute.

1:03:10 Mr.

1:03:11 Wilkerson is looking at it.

1:03:17 A little lower for my liking, but it worked.

1:03:20 So, it did work.

1:03:26 And it looks like their payload is doing what it's supposed to do.

1:03:32 So, Eve's got to do its thing and then start collecting for soil.

1:03:41 Hopefully the parachute lays down and then

1:03:43 the soil samples can begin, but I don't know.

1:03:52 We're we're going to go to the University of Florida.

1:03:58 I guess University of Florida is like, "Yep, we're here." Um,

1:04:01 the name of this name of the rocket is called Earthquake.

1:04:06 is flying.

1:04:06 Yeah, this is University of Florida, correct?

1:04:12 Is anyone from University of Florida here?

1:04:14 Are they excited?

1:04:15 They're just focused.

1:04:16 Okay, very focused.

1:04:19 They're locked in.

1:04:20 This is the name of this rocket is Earthquake flying on a Aerotch L22 um Yep.

1:04:26 L2200 green.

1:04:27 So, similar to the previous motor,

1:04:29 their team name is called Swamp Launch Rocketry Team.

1:04:33 They have 24 team members.

1:04:35 The looks like the payload's called the swamp scooter.

1:04:39 It's a cube sat inspired by or cubat inspired

1:04:44 module that has rotating central section with serrated steel

1:04:49 scoops and can detach itself from the recovery harness

1:04:53 and funnels soil into a collection basin for analysis.

1:04:57 This team also says we go out to eat

1:05:00 at a place called Boss with the sauce every weekend.

1:05:05 And we have an 8020 person of the week ritual which

1:05:09 leads to a person has performed exceptionally well during the given week.

1:05:13 And they're presented with an 8020 aluminum extrusion trophy.

1:05:17 How cool is that?

1:05:18 They do want to thank their team mentor Jimmy Yan, our faculty advisor Dr.

1:05:23 Sean Nameli, and our chief food officer Boss with the sauce.

1:05:32 They got a chief food officer.

1:05:33 That team is serious.

1:05:36 Now, this team did a little bit better planning

1:05:38 and management and they had better co cohesion integration this year.

1:05:42 They did better with their report readiness, which they're very excited about.

1:05:45 They did more test launch this year and they got a lot of great data.

1:05:48 One of the projects did land in the trees

1:05:50 in practice and it took five hours to get it, but they got it back.

1:05:54 And this one, it was a cool paint job.

1:05:55 It was painted in earthquake kind of look

1:05:57 and they called their subscale rocket the Aftershock.

1:06:01 And then our one of their team members is Colin.

1:06:04 Colin is the funny and nonchalant carefree with unpredictability.

1:06:08 So Colin has got a little bit of everything.

1:06:10 And he also did develop the working air brakes and always has a funny joke.

1:06:15 So if you need a joke, go to him.

1:06:17 I did also ask the team, what are they going to do on Saturday?

1:06:19 They got an extra day.

1:06:20 They might go to Monster Jam.

1:06:22 They might go to the US Space and Rocket Center.

1:06:25 I'd recommend that, but then some have to study for finals.

1:06:28 So we'll see how what they've got to do.

1:06:30 This team also looks like they have a team tradition

1:06:34 where their president wears the really big like baseball cap.

1:06:38 So if you see a person with the big baseball cap, that's their president.

1:06:43 And he did paint his face with five-year-old paint.

1:06:45 So that's a that's a bold move, my friend.

1:06:48 But there you go.

1:06:50 University of Florida and Earthquake is going to go.

1:07:36 Okay, this next group is FSU uh Panama City.

1:07:45 Just want to make sure I got the Sometimes they change FSU Panama City.

1:07:51 Yeah, that's it.

1:07:52 So, yeah.

1:07:52 And the name of this rock is called Terteranova, which is New Earth.

1:07:55 also flying on an Aerotch L2200 Mojave Green popular motor.

1:08:00 Their uh payload is staying attached.

1:08:03 They call it the Terteranova project.

1:08:05 There's this is a team of six.

1:08:08 So they they did a lot of work with six

1:08:09 folks and they're calling their payload the Terra Inquisitor.

1:08:14 This payload is a track steer rover that deploys from the rocket after landing.

1:08:18 Once deployed, the payload uses a mechanical linkage to rotate

1:08:21 an augur into position before initial coil soil collection.

1:08:26 The soil is transferred into an internal chamber where the water

1:08:29 is added and the pH sensor measures the soil activity.

1:08:32 The team likes to do for fun their favorite

1:08:35 stories came during the final test flight before the FRR,

1:08:39 the uh flight readiness review.

1:08:42 During final prep, we needed to tighten our RMS

1:08:44 forward closure a little more securely to seat correctly.

1:08:48 Their safety officer, which is a bodybuilder,

1:08:51 turned the eyebolt and the rest of the team

1:08:53 held the case and as they applied the force, the 38 inch steel bolt sheared off.

1:08:59 This individual is very strong.

1:09:02 Uh, with our last launch at Opportunity Risk,

1:09:04 the University of Alabama Huntsville stepped in with the replacement

1:09:07 closure and were able to help to launch.

1:09:09 So, well done that the teams are helping each other out.

1:09:11 We would like to thank our friends and family and staff

1:09:14 at the FSUPC and the NASA USLI and most importantly the Lord.

1:09:20 This project has inspired our team to reach new

1:09:23 goals and accomplish what we didn't think was possible.

1:09:26 None of this could have been done without their support.

1:09:29 Thank you for your dedication success to this project and unwavering support.

1:09:33 This team also this is uh yeah their first subscale didn't work.

1:09:37 They they had 3D printed cardboard,

1:09:39 but they moved to the right thing with fiberglass.

1:09:42 They did paint this in university colors and Creed painted it.

1:09:45 And this is their senior design project.

1:09:47 And it's made up of four mechanical engineers,

1:09:49 one electrical engineer, and one publications team lead.

3:31:42 And then this one is measuring soil data or should be measuring or supposed

3:31:47 to be over the first of the year they have accumulated 35 inside jokes.

3:32:04 that's not how you're supposed to collect the soil.

3:33:43 The name of the rocket is Gada flying on an Aerotch K1050 White Lightning.

3:33:48 It's a fourperson team called Pro and the payload's called Project Luximi.

3:33:55 This team also started in their captain's neon

3:33:58 green bedroom as they entered into high school.

3:34:01 They've always been interested in all areas of engineering like computer

3:34:04 and aerospace and brought individual expertise

3:34:06 together to develop the rocket team.

3:34:08 They want to thank their mentors, Mr.

3:34:12 S, and also throughout their student launch.

3:36:37 We're actually doing some testing or disposing of some charges that didn't fire.

3:36:46 So, if you're going to go recover your rocket,

3:36:48 go through John Ehart to check in before you go.

3:36:50 Only five people on your team with one adult to go with.

3:36:56 And as you pack up, make sure you pick up all your trash.

3:37:04 And then be civil as you're kind of leaving.
