0:14 up on these, we are talking about the flying video,

0:17 the one that starts being about the dumb

0:20 reaction online to that shot in a Superman

0:23 trailer that turned out was definitely not final

0:25 because it looked very different in the final movie.

0:27 But anyway, it evolved into a whole thing about like just human

0:32 flight in movies getting into like Spielberg and Miyazaki and all these things.

0:37 And I can't even remember what the actual

0:39 title of the video is right now because

0:41 I changed it multiple times and this was a hard one to figure out what to call.

0:45 So, as you can probably tell, this is the first one of these videos I

0:48 have shot since the most important event of my year,

0:53 maybe the last like few years of my life.

0:55 Uh, seeing Oasis, it was it was the best.

1:00 Our new intern for the fall, Emil, has been telling me that I should,

1:03 he said, he originally said I should do a video about the Oasis concert,

1:07 which and then we talked about it and then it became like,

1:09 should I just do a video about Oasis because

1:14 they're one of the great obsessions of my life.

1:16 I know we talk about movies on this channel

1:19 and this is something different, but I don't know.

1:22 I'm just like, you know, I've got I've got a lot of thoughts

1:25 about the Gallagher brothers and their lives and careers,

1:30 and I've never really had an outlet for them.

1:33 Um, and so maybe I will make a video about them.

1:36 It's possible.

1:37 Anyway, for now, I'm just going to wear this merch in this video.

1:41 So, the other thing I want to address in this video is

1:44 the wedding that I was recently invited to in one of the replies videos,

1:48 the wedding of Tim and Samantha.

1:51 The wedding happened two days ago as of me shooting

1:54 this video and unfortunately I was not present for it.

1:59 What I do want to say is Tim and Samantha,

2:02 if you are watching this, I genuinely wanted to be there.

2:07 Uh I've never gotten an invitation like this before.

2:10 I mean, I' I've been to weddings, but like not not not like like this.

2:14 It was so cool and surprising and generous of you to invite me to this.

2:20 And I really did look into how to get there.

2:25 And it turns out that getting to Naples, Idaho,

2:30 which is basically like as far north in Idaho as you can get,

2:34 like close to the Canadian border, turns out getting there from New York,

2:38 takes a really, really long time and is also quite expensive.

2:43 It definitely involves like multiple forms of transportation

2:47 like planes and automobiles or like a multi-day train.

2:52 And it turns out that this channel is not so

2:55 successful that I can just like charter a private jet.

2:58 But I did look into it.

2:59 I I looked I checked in multiple times.

3:02 Even like the week before I was like, "Well, let's check again.

3:06 What is is there a simpler way to to get there to like get there,

3:10 you know, there and back in like, you know, like a day or so?

3:13 And I it it just it just did not work out.

3:17 So, thank you again for the invitation.

3:20 I am sorry that I wasn't there, but I hope I hope it was an amazing day.

4:04 This video, which you know talked about how little

4:07 footage there was of Superman at at that point,

4:10 did drop on YouTube the same day that a brand new,

4:14 longer Superman trailer also dropped.

4:16 But here is the thing.

4:18 As you're probably aware by now, if you're not aware,

4:21 then you will be in a moment.

4:23 Earlier this year, we switched to a new release format

4:27 where the videos are always one video ahead on Nebula.

4:31 So, the videos drop first on Nebula and then

4:33 like a month later they drop on YouTube.

4:36 So, if you watch a video on YouTube and you see where it says like

4:38 next time this well when you're watching

4:41 that, that video is already out on Nebula.

4:43 And so, when when every video drops on YouTube,

4:46 I finished it a month ago and so I have like so mentally moved on.

4:51 So, you're talking about how this video came

4:53 out the same day as the Superman trailer.

4:55 The thing is, this video really came out a month before the Superman trailer.

4:58 So, look, I think there are many very

5:00 good reasons to join Nebula if you haven't already.

5:03 You know, provided you can afford it.

5:04 You know, I think it's a great company.

5:06 I really believe in it.

5:07 You know, I've been working on I I think cool stuff there for a while.

5:10 I'm working on cool stuff there now.

5:12 As you may have recently seen in Variety,

5:14 I was just named the director of scripted development.

5:18 And so obviously, you know, I'm I'm I'm very invested in this company,

5:22 but also the real the real selling point is just like

5:25 you don't have to wait a month to watch the new videos.

5:28 Don't Don't you just want to watch them as soon as you can?

5:31 Like that that's it.

5:32 So while everyone else is talking about the James Bond video,

5:34 you can be like, I watched that[ __] a month ago.

5:37 I'm on to the digital deaging video.

5:39 Anyway, I'm done doing a commercial for Nebula.

5:42 Next up, HFA HFA says, "Obviously, media literacy is at an all-time low,

5:48 but man, that Superman reaction is just bleak.

5:51 I saw someone try to explain how bad the color

5:53 correction was since the snow had blue shadows and blue highlights,

5:57 which is just literally how snow looks during magic hour.

6:00 The sky is mostly blue,

6:01 so the snow is reflecting blue." The incuriousness some people have

6:05 now is just not the kind of nerds I grew up with.

6:09 Yeah, look, the internet has done a lot of bad things,

6:11 and what I'm about to name is not the worst by any means.

6:15 It's really far from the worst, but it drives me insane how like Reddit

6:20 and YouTube have made so many people think they

6:24 know like about just film and like how

6:28 film making works and how like film analysis works.

6:30 Um, and then also just like how the film industry

6:33 works and what is happening at major studios because so

6:37 many people speak so confidently about this stuff and they

6:41 have no idea what they're talking about and it's annoying.

6:47 Anyway, Maragolds the movie says, "One of my favorite flying scenes in movies is

6:53 when Buzz Lightyear flies at the end of Toy Story,

6:56 or as he calls it, falling with style.

6:58 Yes, he's a toy, but he's a humanoid toy,

7:01 and he shares the same inability to actually fly as real humans.

7:05 It feels so cathartic and joyful,

7:07 especially after that devastating scene earlier in the movie when

7:09 he attempts to fly out the window and instead collapses,

7:12 both literally and mentally.

7:14 There's a reason it's one of the most

7:15 iconic shots in all of Pixar's filmography.

7:18 completely agree and I did think about including the climax

7:23 of Toy Story in the video but at the end of the day it's not flying it's falling

7:29 with style and so did not qualify but just

7:34 just you know beautiful transcendent perfect scene JCubed says

7:40 just my opinion but what has always drawn me

7:42 to Spider-Man is that web swinging is effectively flying

7:46 but infinitely cooler It may be limited by the environment,

7:49 but it has a certain tactile feel with its visible active decision-making.

7:54 I don't think you get that anywhere else.

7:56 Yeah.

7:56 I mean, look, I'm not going to say

7:58 that web sling is cooler because I think they're

8:01 just very different because fundamentally flying is about defying

8:06 gravity and like transcending that natural law of physics.

8:11 And websing is so dependent on gravity.

8:14 It's like all about gravity.

8:15 It's like, you know, Spider-Man is constantly falling and then swings

8:18 up again and falling and swings up again.

8:20 And it's like, I think like the best

8:22 web slinging really takes advantage of the gravity.

8:25 It's like, look, you know, this movie is is bad.

8:28 But that like opening section of Amazing Spider-Man 2,

8:33 you know, like with like Paul Gotti stealing the armored truck,

8:36 but like mostly like like it has such

8:38 good websing like that first part where Spider-Man's just

8:41 like falling out of the sky and you

8:44 see like the wind rippling at at his costume.

8:47 It's great.

8:48 It's great.

8:49 So yeah, I'm not I'm not even comparing it

8:50 to flying because I think they are two different things, but I love them both.

8:54 Gabriel Sadder says, "I liked the way the Thunderbolts did it.

8:57 They weren't obsessed over close-ups.

8:59 They pulled the camera away back,

9:01 but you could still see that it was a little dude floating around.

9:04 More scope than you usually see.

9:06 Yeah, I think this is talking about the sentry

9:08 slash the void like in the third act.

9:12 And I I do think it's well done.

9:14 And also like part of this is that he's like kind of the the villain.

9:18 And so, you know, it's being shot from the main character's perspective

9:22 and they are on the ground looking at this guy from a distance.

9:25 And so, you know, I think that's a big part of like why it's shot that way.

9:28 But yeah, you do also there see what is also, you know,

9:32 inherently scary about like looking up and like

9:36 seeing someone just like hovering over you defying gravity.

9:39 It's compelling stuff.

9:47 Grim the Pleasant says, "Generally, Age of Ultron isn't the best,

9:53 but the contrast between the flight of Vision,

9:55 Iron Man, and Thor is interesting for their characters

9:59 and giving their best pseudo explanations of flight.

10:02 Vision is reality violation, so just sort of floats with less care of physics.

10:06 Iron Man is meant to be thrusters, so very physics,

10:09 and Thor's magic, but also often hauling himself through the air with Mjolnir.

10:17 I got to say Age of Ultron is one of these movies that is really imperfect,

10:22 but the more time goes on, I feel like like everyone

10:26 kind of realizes these like like interesting like idiosyncratic things about it.

10:32 And look, the vision rocks.

10:34 And especially like like when he shows up,

10:36 we're so used to the like the very physics-based Iron

10:40 Man flying that suddenly this android just kind of like,

10:44 you know, stepping up into the air and like like

10:47 defying the laws of nature like like feels really profound.

10:51 Yeah, I think it's well done.

11:10 on Batman's ability to fly is the real miracle of this episode.

11:18 There's that that Spielberg quote when he talks about

11:20 like fictional characters flying and lists Batman in there.

11:24 I I I was a little annoyed when I saw that quote because I'm just like, look,

11:29 I'm not going to comment on it, but I know I know like people

11:33 in the comments section are going to comment on it.

11:35 And like Steve, you were you were saying that like

11:39 a year after like the 89 Batman came out.

11:42 Like you you knew that Batman couldn't fly.

11:46 Like come on.

11:47 Unless you're talking about like in the Batwing,

11:49 which like but you know, come on.

12:32 like a teaser for Superman and then like one TV

12:35 spot and now like the movie's out and we've

12:37 all seen it and so like you know there's

12:39 like so much more to talk about in general

12:42 like I I quite like the flying in Superman.

12:45 I think it's this is one of these funny things where it's like no one could

12:48 have asked these questions in the comments

12:50 at the time because the movie wasn't out yet.

12:52 But now I imagine people probably do what I want to know what I

12:56 have to say about about Superman or at least the flight in Superman in general.

13:00 I quite like it and think it's quite effective and really like

13:02 a lot of the stuff I said in the video does apply.

13:05 One moment that I that doesn't quite work for me

13:09 is when he like flies back to the Fortress of Solitude.

13:13 I think after like the news about his Kryptonian parents comes out

13:16 and there's that part where he's like flying really intensely but and shot

13:19 with like the super wide angle lenses and he like he's got

13:22 his arms out and the camera is kind of like moving around him.

13:25 I understand that like the intent of that that shot like to just show him

13:30 like you know flying as like recklessly

13:33 and intensely and fast as he possibly can.

13:36 It didn't quite communicate the like speed and force

13:39 to me in the way I think it was intended.

13:41 It just I I thought it was a slightly awkward execution,

13:43 but I think that was the only one I really bumped up against in the whole movie.

13:48 The rest thought was pretty great and I like the movie quite a bit.

13:54 A red head devito says, "I think Neil Degrasse Tyson is to blame

13:59 for the nerds overanalyzing every shot you lamented.

14:03 when he made the observation that the stars were

14:05 not in their correct positions in that Titanic scene,

14:08 it gave license to dorks around the world to do the same thing for every movie.

14:15 person like the the rise of pedantic nitpicking really

21:37 and I didn't even I wasn't even really negative toward it.

21:40 I will say in terms of making Superman movies, Zack Snder did not do it better.

21:44 He really didn't.

21:46 Uh, now that the movie is out, yeah, Man of Steel is way,

21:49 way worse, and Superman 2025 is, I think, much better.

21:54 Oh, it looks like there's math here.

22:01 but you didn't factor in how wind pressure deforms a human face in flight.

22:05 While Superman might resist air impact,

22:07 normal passengers would suffer soft tissue distortion using the dynamic

22:12 pressure formula." Then there's a bunch of math and science.

22:15 So, we've got like, you know,

22:17 strong wind sensation, but almost no visible facial deformation.

22:20 Then we got cheeks and lips start to pull back noticeably,

22:22 especially if skin is soft.

22:24 We go on and on.

22:25 Unless your characters have steel man biology,

22:27 you'll need to show or explain how they withstand these effects at high speed.

22:32 Well, I don't think you need to because it's a movie and, you know,

22:36 movies can bend the laws of reality to to to make

22:39 things that are to make a better reality.

22:41 But I will say I I think a perfect example of what you were talking about.

22:44 This thing that we don't often see in movies is in Mission Impossible

22:48 Dead Reckoning part one when Ethan Hunt jumps the motorcycle off of the cliff,

22:54 the big famous stunt,

22:55 but then right after that when it cuts to him falling and you've

22:59 got like Tom Cruz shouting and the wind is like rippling the skin

23:04 on his face so intensely and it's it's the kind of thing

23:08 like immediately this feels so real because we never see that in movies.

23:13 Uh it it it's like not flattering or sexy,

23:17 but it's like it immediately tells us like, "Oh, th this is not being faked.

23:21 This guy is really falling and and trying to deliver

23:24 these lines while falling really really fast." It's great.

23:28 Um and also I appreciate that the movie like lets him look goofy there.

23:33 like it's funny, but yeah, that is also why you don't see it more because

23:39 they usually don't want things to like to look goofy.

23:44 So there you go.

23:45 I I I hate to tell you

23:46 that sometimes movies are not 100% scientifically accurate.

24:27 just like you know major canonical movies to like their lives and childhoods.

24:32 Uh How to Train Your Dragon one came out like my senior year of college.

24:37 Two came out when I was like you know living in the city a few years

24:41 later and I just I never saw three and I did not see the live action remake.

24:45 So yeah.

24:45 So I think I think like one in particular is quite good.

24:52 to them that people a bit younger than me do.

24:54 So, I am sorry, but I'm glad that you appreciated the inclusion of the one shot.

29:48 in vampire cinema is vampires having like like a mild ability to fly.

30:06 Salem's Lot scene with like the little kid like

30:14 like superhuman giving them like you like Superman flight

30:26 rising up from the ground there is a potential eeriness to it.

30:34 there is something about like, you know, if you want to present

30:36 a superhuman character as like threatening or scary.

30:40 I think it's scarier if they are just like hovering in the sky

30:44 as opposed to them like flying around with a lot of motion.

30:55 tied down by gravity like you are and I am more powerful than
