Is Magnus For Real?!
GMHikaru
0:00 All right, you guys.
0:01 So, we have a video that we are going to cover today.
0:04 This is some content react.
0:05 This is a video on YouTube.
0:07 It's called Magnus Answers stupid questions.
0:10 Let's jump right into the video.
0:11 I'll put the closed captions on as well.
0:13 And here we go.
0:14 So, in this bowl, we have a bunch of hot takes.
0:16 I'm going to pick them out at random.
0:18 I don't know what they are.
0:19 And then I'm going to give my hot take on these hot takes.
0:23 Okay.
0:27 Chess is the most important game ever made.
0:31 Okay.
0:31 So, the way we're going to do this is we're going to see the questions.
0:34 I'm going to react.
0:34 I realize that there are a couple things
0:36 that are a little bit scuffed, but that's okay.
0:37 It's all good.
0:38 Um, all right.
0:40 So, as we as we look at this first
0:42 question about is chess the greatest game ever made,
0:45 I'm going to I'm going to say unequivocally the answer to that is obviously no.
0:49 Chess is not the greatest game ever made.
0:51 Um, it's it's not not even close.
0:53 I don't know what Magnus will say necessarily,
0:55 but uh definitely not definitely not the best game ever made.
0:58 There's no doubt about that.
1:00 I disagree with the with the premise.
1:03 No game is ever important.
1:06 Yeah, this is a dumb take.
1:08 Levy Rosman will become a grandmaster.
1:11 Okay, I mean this is the obvious one.
1:12 Magnus is going to obviously he's going to say
1:14 the exact same thing that I would say.
1:16 Levy is not going to become a grandmaster.
1:18 Um I I mean I think there was a very brief window maybe um in 2022ish
1:24 around there when when he had a really
1:26 good tournament in Spain if I remember correctly.
1:28 Maybe it was later than that.
1:29 Um but he but like Magnus Levy Levy will never become a GM.
1:32 I mean it's just his his time it's way too late.
1:35 Um and he he also would have to gain so many rating points.
1:38 It's just not happening.
1:39 Age age and rating make it borderline impossible.
1:46 Uh, chess is more creative than analytical.
1:49 Um, okay.
1:50 So, chess is more creative than analytical.
1:53 I would actually say I would say and I
1:56 think Mag is going to say the same thing here.
1:58 I I hope he says exactly what I'd say.
1:59 I would argue that chess for the first probably from from when
2:04 from with the modern rules I believe which is around like the early
2:06 1600s to till about I would say like 19 I'm going to say
2:11 until about like 19 I'm going to say 19 I would say 2000.
2:18 Let's just do 2000 is a round number.
2:20 Um I would 2000 a round number.
2:22 I think chess was way more creative than analytical.
2:25 But I think with the rise of computers,
2:27 chess has become far less creative
2:29 in the sense that the only creativity you have
2:32 is playing around with the computer and hoping
2:34 that it'll show you something very create,
2:35 some great idea that you can play in a game.
2:37 Um, so I think chess is much more analytical now than creative.
2:41 But for probably the last like 400 years up until 2000,
2:44 technology became what it is today.
2:47 It was much more creative.
2:48 So it swung from completely creative to completely analytical in my opinion.
2:52 That is absolute nonsense.
2:54 There is I think some element of creativity
2:58 in chess but normally creativity is not really rewarded.
3:02 What is rewarded is precision and analytical thinking.
3:07 So I am 100% not creative.
3:11 Even though at some point I thought I was creative,
3:13 I realized that what I thought was creative thinking was
3:16 seeing patterns that are more consistent with with analy analytical thinking.
3:21 So chess analytical I am satisfied with my career.
3:28 Satisfied with my career.
3:29 I mean if Magnus is I mean I'm sure Magnus
3:31 is satisfied with his career as he as he should be.
3:34 Yeah, I'm sure thinks he would.
3:34 I mean, I think for him, he probably just wants to uh just wants to maintain
3:38 the number one spot or win these tournaments as long as possible,
3:41 but I mean, if Magnus isn't satisfied with his career overall,
3:43 then uh then something's wrong.
3:46 No, I'm not satisfied.
3:47 I'm very satisfied.
3:48 I'm very happy with a lot of my my play, but I'm not done yet.
3:54 So, how Yeah.
3:55 So, I mean, more more or less he says exactly what I'm saying,
3:58 just in a different way,
3:59 which is that like obviously he's he's satisfied,
4:01 but he still wants to keep winning.
4:03 like he's basically saying he's he's fine with his career.
4:05 He's happy.
4:06 He wants to keep winning as long as he can.
4:08 Um, now someone in chat asked,
4:09 "Am I satisfied with my career?" Of course, I'm satisfied with my career.
4:12 Why would I not be satisfied?
4:14 Um, and I don't mean that in a uh in a weird way or negative way.
4:17 Uh but for me when I look at my career there there are
4:21 a couple very important moments but if you go back to 2019 in 2019 like
4:26 let's just say I basically broke into the top 10 around like 20 2009
4:31 2010ish whatever you want to call it you know I was in the top 10
4:34 for a very long time but in 2019 or started in 2018 but in 2019
4:38 my rating went on a went off a cliff and I was down to something
4:41 like number 19 or 20 in the world and at that point I really thought
4:44 that my professional chess career was over And if my career had ended in 2019,
4:50 um, with the one candidates tournament
4:52 in 2016 where I completely bombed and finished
4:54 near the bottom near the bottom of the table where I was like number seven,
4:59 um, in in that tournament with that being
5:00 like my best performance the candidates,
5:02 you know, very briefly being number two.
5:04 Uh, it would have been it would have been a very
5:06 I mean I I I would have looked at my career
5:08 and I would have felt that I left something on the table
5:10 or I had not achieved the maximum that I could have achieved.
5:14 Um, so then you know you look at 2019 and then if you
5:18 look at the pandemic and what has happened in the last six years,
5:21 I would say that I I I'm very very satisfied with my career
5:24 because sure you could say that I didn't quite make it to the top.
5:26 Obviously I you know I lost the game to ding had I known
5:29 at the time you could say I don't lose that game I play a match whatever.
5:32 Um but I definitely prove that I could have made it to a match
5:36 and so I definitely have no no real regrets about my chess career.
5:39 And so I'm very I'm very very very very pleased.
5:42 And I would also say separately, and this is a very American centric view.
5:46 I know depending where you are, it can be different, but for me,
5:49 when I look at my career as a chess player, you know,
5:52 I've I've always valued uh freedom,
5:54 the ability to do whatever I want with my life
5:57 far more than like individual accomplishments or anything else.
6:00 And having played chess, having succeeded with content creation the way I have,
6:03 having had the impact I had,
6:05 and basically being in a situation where I could retire
6:07 tomorrow and never have to work a day in my life,
6:09 I can't not be satisfied um with everything
6:12 that has happened in my chess career.
6:13 I just I just can't I can't not be satisfied because I've because
6:17 I've gotten to the place where I was always hoping I would be.
6:20 Um and everything else at this point is just gravy, you know.
6:23 It's just gravy or you know, it's what's it?
6:25 Uh pudding on top.
6:26 No, not pudding.
6:27 It's the the ice the pudding on top of the cake.
6:30 I can't think of the right phrase, but anyway, whatever.
6:32 Or it's the icing on top of the cake.
6:33 I can't think, but you guys get the point.
6:35 So, let's keep going with the video.
6:37 Chess YouTube content has gotten stale.
6:41 Chess YouTube content has gotten stale.
6:43 It of course, uh, this is not this probably
6:45 is not a great question for Magnus to answer,
6:47 per se, cuz Magnus obviously doesn't make content.
6:50 He's not, you know, he's not basically, you know,
6:52 on the in he's not looking at the inner workings of everything that's going on.
6:55 Um, I will give you guys a take.
6:57 Of course, chess content is stale.
6:59 And it's stale for quite a few different reasons.
7:01 Uh, first reason that chess content is very stale
7:04 is because we've reached a stage where every where everyone,
7:07 specifically the big content creators are content with what they're doing.
7:11 Um, so we're not grinding the way we once did.
7:14 You don't see a lot of the collabs.
7:15 Like you don't see Levy and I collabing.
7:17 You don't see like, you know, BZ, myself, Levy, Nemo, you know,
7:20 there were a lot of different collabs, a lot of different things.
7:22 whether it's four player chess, guess the ELO, um I mean playing B,
7:26 there were so many different things that we were doing
7:29 um back in 2020 and 2021 that are not happening anymore.
7:33 Um and everyone's basically just doing a little bit of the same thing.
7:35 Levy's doing the recaps.
7:37 I do recaps.
7:38 Levy doesn't guess the ELOS.
7:39 You know, we all play the bots.
7:40 Um so in general, of course, of course content has become stale there.
7:44 There's no there's no no denying that.
7:47 Um and that's that's that's just the that's just the truth.
7:50 I don't know.
7:50 I don't know what Magn is going to say cuz he's not
7:52 um he's of course he he doesn't have any specific insight into this.
7:57 I don't know.
7:57 I kind of agree.
7:58 That's why I got to do more.
8:02 To get better at chess, you should study more than you play.
8:05 Okay, so this is actually a great question.
8:08 Well, this question about you should study more at chess than you play.
8:10 You know, you you know what you know what I would say
8:12 on this one is I would say that this was 100% true.
8:16 This is the second question in this video that I would say there
8:19 was a correct answer up to a certain point and then with the rise
8:23 of technology and the availability of information
8:26 this also has changed this this question
8:29 specifically if you look at this question to get better you study more
8:32 than you play that would have been true up until I would say
8:36 2010 studying chess up till about 2010 I would say was actually much more
8:41 valuable now play play as much as you can you're going to improve
8:45 very quickly It's in the style of Alpha Zero where the more you play,
8:49 the more the patterns are going to connect.
8:51 So, you should play as much as you possibly can.
8:53 So, this this answer depends on when you ask,
8:55 but in the modern age, 100% you should play more.
8:59 Absolutely not.
9:00 That is the dumbest take I've ever seen.
9:02 Playing is fun.
9:03 You should definitely study, but I feel like you always learn more
9:08 from from from playing and then kind of analyzing your your games a bit.
9:15 And Correct.
9:15 There has to be an element of enjoyment as well.
9:19 I would say no.
9:19 You got
9:20 100% 100% spot on exact same take that I have.
9:23 Exact same take.
9:24 So, let's keep going.
9:25 I play a bit more than you study.
9:27 Um, chess is an elitist game.
9:29 Ooh, chess and elitist game.
9:31 Um, I this this this deserves some context,
9:35 but I think I think what I would say um you
9:38 got to play a bit more than you stud or sorry, I'm reading the text.
9:41 Sorry.
9:41 Um, it depends what the context of elitist game is.
9:44 I mean, definitely it's a game where how you're perceived within
9:48 the world of chess is directly related to the rating that you have.
9:52 Um, so I I I don't I don't know what they mean by elitist.
9:55 Like I I don't I don't I don't I don't know the context,
9:58 so I can't really answer.
9:59 I think on the contrary, chess is very accessible.
10:04 It is
10:05 cheap.
10:06 It is generally free to play online
10:09 and it's played by millions and millions and millions.
10:11 Yeah.
10:11 See like I again I mean Magnus is using the he's looking at the broader
10:14 take like how many people play the game and I actually I agree with Magnus here.
10:17 I just don't I don't know what the context is.
10:19 Like if the context is is it elitist where when you
10:21 play chess and you're in the world chess is it like that?
10:24 The answer is yes.
10:24 If it's whether it's elite, it's like people don't play chess at all,
10:27 then what Magnus is saying here is 100% spot on of people.
10:31 Audience noise slash live audiences ruin the integrity of the game.
10:36 I mean, you you guys you guys know my attitude.
10:38 Of course, I won.
10:39 They're confus confusing elitist with intelligence.
10:41 Yeah.
10:41 I mean, the question it's just a bad bad question.
10:43 It's not it's not phrased.
10:45 Um, to audiences ruin the integrity of the game.
10:47 I'm going to tell you guys,
10:48 Magnus is a lot like myself in that I think what
10:52 Magnus wishes is that there would be a lot more people who
10:55 would celebrate when he's doing well um or winning a tournament
10:59 or anybody's winning a tournament in a way that you don't have.
11:01 You know, I the last couple weeks I usually spend
11:04 my mornings I don't know if there's a game today,
11:06 but the last couple of weeks like I usually
11:08 spend my Saturday and Sunday mornings in the gym,
11:11 of course, I'm I'm busy looks maxing all the time.
11:14 Um, and there's always a premiership game on and I
11:16 think was it was it last week or the week before?
11:18 Uh, it was Halan was it man?
11:21 It was Halan scored in like the 80th minute.
11:23 I forget.
11:23 I forget.
11:24 I forget who who it was against.
11:25 Um, but but anyway, I was watching the game and he scores and you know
11:29 he goes runs up to the camera and like you have a stadium of like
11:32 80,000 people cheering and like I'm going to say that it's really sad that you
11:36 don't you never feel you never feel like
11:39 fan appreciation or anything like that in chess.
11:42 Uh it was it was Manu versus Arsenal.
11:44 Was that the game?
11:44 Yeah, it was like it was like two weeks ago in the premiership.
11:47 I I I I mean Halan scored in like the 70th 80th minute.
11:50 It was it was late in the game.
11:51 I don't know how how late it was.
11:52 But anyway, um you guys get the point of what I'm saying.
11:55 So yeah, obviously it would be nice if there was more more going on.
11:58 Man City versus Arsenal.
11:59 Yeah, first of all, I don't really think so.
12:04 And secondly, I just think that what we saw during the EWC is that it worked.
12:12 It worked really well with um with a with a live
12:15 audience and I would en encourage them to be louder and
12:19 I'm pronouncing Halan wrong.
12:20 Okay, I'm sorry guys.
12:21 I'm not Norwegian.
12:23 Thank you very much.
12:24 Appreciate it.
12:25 Wilder.
12:25 So, I disagree.
12:27 Steph Curry is better than LeBron James.
12:30 Okay, this is a I I don't even I don't even understand this question.
12:33 This is just a weird one.
12:34 I guess because Magnus likes basketball.
12:36 Um I will tell you guys, by the way,
12:38 speaking of basketball, very briefly, I'm going to get off topic.
12:41 the these modern day players, I don't want to sound like an unk here,
12:44 but these modern day players like they do not learn fundamentals.
12:48 We have seen three of the five worst performances in a half in these current
12:52 playoffs that are going on from the Atlanta Hawks against the New York Knicks.
12:56 We saw it in the game between the Magic
12:57 last night against the Pistons where they missed like 23,
13:00 was it 23 or 24 shots in a row like just
13:03 so many perimeter shots just clank clank clank over and over again.
13:07 And then of course last night we also saw it
13:09 in the game between the u between the Lakers and the Rockets.
13:11 So I mean you got to get the ball inside.
13:14 You got to get in the paint.
13:15 You you got to remember how how to play basketball properly.
13:18 So there's my little hot take for the second side.
13:20 I mean it's just ridiculous.
13:21 Like you just see all these perimeter three balls
13:23 just up up clank clank clank over and over again.
13:26 Um other than when you randomly shoot the three
13:28 ball and it goes in like Barrett shot.
13:30 But anyway um that that's just my little
13:32 my little random random rant for today um about basketball.
13:35 But anyway, to the question, I mean, I I I I would,
13:39 you know, as as an oldtime fan, you know,
13:41 I'm going to say that I like LeBron more because I
13:42 think Steph Curry and the three just shooting endless three balls,
13:46 I really don't like that style of basketball.
13:48 So, I I would I would say that LeBron is better.
13:51 There you go.
13:52 But yes, LeBron does flop a lot.
13:53 I agree with that.
13:54 Well, he's better at golf and he's
13:56 probably a better basketball player currently.
13:59 Uh but in terms of who has had
14:01 the best career and the highest peak, well, it's LeBron.
14:04 The current generation of professional players
14:06 is the strongest chess has ever seen.
14:10 Um, okay.
14:11 This this is an interesting question.
14:13 I mean, everything is relative in terms of time frames.
14:16 I think it's very hard to judge uh because Magnus has been so dominant.
14:20 I think Magnus' dominance definitely makes players like myself, Fabi, Leavonne,
14:25 and others uh look much diminished versus in the past where
14:28 you had like you had Kasparov and Karpov at the same time.
14:31 You had a Naan and Cranick as well.
14:33 I would say arguably those four players,
14:35 they might not be in the exact same generation,
14:38 but they're close enough and they're they're all four of those players,
14:40 I would argue, are probably top 10 all-time players.
14:43 So, I would say the quality of play is higher,
14:47 but neither Fabi nor myself are going to rank in the top 10, nor will Leavonne.
14:51 So, I would I mean, it's it's a contextual.
14:54 The the quality of chess play is definitely the highest ever.
14:57 Would I say we're the strongest historically?
14:59 I would say no just because you have those four players who are all
15:02 in the top 10 who are around the same time but it's all relative.
15:05 Okay, let's let's let's keep going.
15:08 Um to some extent yes because players do play better overreact or rage.
15:15 It's hard to say with other measures whether this one is
15:19 is the strongest but I think kind of the you have
15:23 two really really strong generations right now which is one is
15:27 the one that's born from 87 Nakamura to about 93 so
15:34 and that includes myself Carana Napom Nishi Ding and many others
15:40 and then you have the generation born from 2003 on um
15:45 of which Arjun is probably the the oldest and then you
15:48 have Gash and um Pragna Alvesa and Kimer and many others.
15:55 It's hard to say but I think there's a good argument
15:58 for the the early' 90s late '8s generation being the strongest ever.
16:04 Ah so okay so he does he does say that that's interesting.
16:07 I mean I it's hard to judge by what measure and Magnus correctly says.
16:11 I mean, if you go off the measure of the pure quality of chess,
16:13 the quality of chess is much higher,
16:15 but with every generation, the quality is going to keep improving.
16:17 So, it's it's all it's all relative.
16:19 Is Leavon part of your gen?
16:20 Well, it's weird because like I'm I'm like I'm a unique character.
16:24 Like, in my in my year,
16:26 the only other player who became really good is Teor Rajbob.
16:30 He's literally the only other player I think
16:32 from like the late 80s who was very strong.
16:34 Leavonne I think is 83 which is much which I mean
16:37 Leavon's like four years older than me if I'm not mistaken.
16:39 I'll take a look quickly like we look at Leavon Aronian.
16:42 Leavon Aron he is 19 1982.
16:47 So Leavon's actually 5 years older than me.
16:49 Um so I I I mean it's it's hard to judge but it's kind
16:53 of weird because like Magnus was born I
16:56 believe Magnus should be three years younger, right?
16:58 Magnus would be born in like 90 if I'm not 89 or 90.
17:01 I think uh Magnus was born in 90 or 89.
17:04 I think it's 90 but let me see.
17:06 Um yeah Magnus November 30th 1990.
17:09 So, um, yeah.
17:10 I mean, I it's it's hard to judge, but like from from my my I mean,
17:14 it's nice for Magnus to throw me in cuz I'm like literally
17:16 the only player outside of Rajabov who is good from the late 80s,
17:18 which is kind of strange.
17:20 Um, but, you know, it's it's nice to hear.
17:23 At any rate, so let's keep going.
17:26 Chess is fun.
17:27 Chess is fun.
17:28 Um, chess as a kid when you're first starting out is like
17:32 I think one of the best possible things that you can do.
17:35 I I mean I I I I I love chess as a kid starting out.
17:39 I think once it becomes serious,
17:41 especially if you're if you're very strong as a kid, it's anything but fun.
17:44 You know, I recently rewatched this documentary on Demisabas.
17:48 It was called the thinking game.
17:50 And um and and and you know,
17:52 it's very true that when when you become a very strong chess player,
17:55 it's not a cheap or it's it's not a cheap
17:57 game like Magnus alluding to earlier cuz then it's like hotels,
18:00 entry fees, airfares, you know,
18:02 there's a lot of money your parents end up spending on it.
18:05 And if you don't do well,
18:06 there's a ton of pressure and and everything else um go going on.
18:11 So, it's uh it's something where I would say at the beginning when
18:14 you're just a kid trying to play the game when you first start out,
18:17 it is tremendously fun.
18:19 But after that, if you if you I would say
18:21 once you get above about like 1,600 over the board level,
18:24 especially if you're a young kid,
18:25 it becomes very very serious is what I would say.
18:27 So for for me, chess I I don't I
18:29 don't really look at chess as being fun anymore,
18:31 but it was a it was a great fun when I started playing.
18:35 Well, that is not a hot hot take.
18:36 Chess is fantastic.
18:38 I think for some people starting out in chess,
18:41 it can be a little bit hard to grasp at first,
18:45 but everything that's worth something in life,
18:48 you have to work a little bit for.
18:50 And once you get into it, chess is fun.
18:54 It is.
18:55 I love the music.
18:56 By the way, whoever did I guess it was Team Liquid did this.
18:58 This is great music.
18:59 They try to make it sound like it's like some romantic
19:01 thing here with this like with this uh with this music.
19:04 I mean, I the pure game of chess itself self I love chess,
19:07 but I would not classify chess as fun.
19:09 That that's what I would not classify as.
19:11 I would say it's a great game, but I don't I don't think of it as fun.
19:15 Like I I mean I will always love playing chess.
19:17 Make no mistake.
19:18 But just because I love playing chess doesn't mean that I think it's fun.
19:22 So So that that's what that's what I would say.
19:23 Maybe maybe you can say that's kind of the same thing like
19:26 but is but I I don't view it as the same thing.
19:28 I think like loving something and then
19:29 thinking something are fun are very different.
19:31 Like I I will always love chess like for for for as long as long as I'm alive,
19:36 but I'm never going to look at chess is being something fun.
19:38 I'm never going to look at it as fun.
19:40 Shouldn't you think it's fun if you love it?
19:42 I mean, not really.
19:43 Because so so much of of chess for me
19:46 is like at this point it's like results driven.
19:49 Like it's it's all it's all about the you know, it's all about the competition.
19:52 It's all about the competition.
19:54 So like I mean I love chess as a game, but I don't think it's fun.
19:57 Like I I I don't think it's fun.
19:59 It's fun of course when you win everything, Mr.
20:01 Magdus.
20:01 Well, that's also true.
20:02 When you when you win everything, of course it's going to be more fun.
20:04 Obviously a fantastic obviously.
20:07 Obviously you win most of the time it's going to be fun.
20:11 This was not a hot take.
20:12 Uh kids should learn chess starting from checkmate patterns.
20:16 That's an interesting question.
20:18 That's actually I think how I started learning when I was a young kid.
20:21 I had my little pocket magnetic chess set because
20:23 I grew up back before social media ruined the world.
20:26 Um, and I had my pocket set and I had this book,
20:28 this, it has Bobby Fisher on the cover.
20:30 It was just a bunch of basic checkmating patterns.
20:32 So, I would open the book,
20:33 set up position on my magnetic chest set, and then I get the position,
20:36 make sure it's right, and then I go and I make the moves on the board.
20:38 Um, that's how I did it.
20:40 It's more fun on on an iPad.
20:41 I'm sorry you guys, I I'm sorry.
20:43 I'm an unk.
20:44 I disagree 100%.
20:45 I disagree 100%.
20:47 Um uh it it it had um it had Fischer on the cover.
20:51 Yeah, it was Bobby Fisher Teaches Chess.
20:53 It was this one.
20:54 Um can I open the image in a new tab?
20:56 Let me see if I can.
20:58 Yeah, it was this one.
20:59 It's this one.
21:00 It It was this book.
21:02 There was this book and then
21:03 my stepfather taught me some basic checkmating patterns.
21:05 But but basically, I'd have my little little pocket
21:08 chest that I'd set up the position from the book,
21:09 look at the books, look at the position,
21:11 then look at the board and try to figure it out.
21:13 Um, so I would actually say that um that that in general I that's how I learned.
21:18 I think it's a great way to learn at the start.
21:20 I think you should start with those checkmate patterns and then you should start
21:22 playing and then you should also start
21:24 of course learning some basic openings and everything.
21:26 Can you flex your guns on stream?
21:27 Flex my guns on stream.
21:28 I mean I I can try but anyway it's hard.
21:31 The camera the camera angle is not right but whatever.
21:33 Let's finish the video and then we can we can be silly.
21:37 I never really thought about that.
21:40 It does make sense.
21:41 First of all, checkmating is is fun and it will
21:44 give you a sense of accomplishment from from early on.
21:48 So why not?
21:49 But what exactly is the best way to learn chess from the beginning?
21:53 I don't know.
21:54 Uh Hikar is currently the second best chess player in the world.
21:57 Oh my Oh, this So, okay, you guys.
21:59 So, this is why my mods wanted me to react to the video.
22:02 I'm like, okay, it's a nice cute video.
22:04 It's good.
22:04 This is why the mods wanted me to react to it.
22:06 Okay, let's keep going.
22:08 Uh this is why.
22:09 Um, I mean, I would say that it depends what your metric is.
22:12 By overall performance, I would say yes.
22:15 And the reason I would say yes on this one is simply because people look
22:18 at mo people this recency bias where they look at one event and they're like,
22:22 "Oh, it's, you know, someone's terrible,
22:24 they can't play anymore." But for the last 3 years,
22:26 I've played well literally in every
22:27 tournament except for this one candidates's tournament.
22:30 So, the I don't I don't think the ratings actually lie.
22:32 I I would say that in general, I had one bad tournament.
22:34 Now, if I have another bad tournament, then it's a different story, of course.
22:38 Um, but that's that's my that's my view is that people are like,
22:42 "Oh, some terrible tournament.
22:43 No one's good anymore." Like the chess world has completely lost
22:46 its ability to remember anything beyond like beyond the past month.
22:49 They have like if Cinderov goes and has one
22:51 or two bad tournaments now after the cancel like, "Oh, Cinderov, he's terrible.
22:55 He's watch the favorite again." Like the world of chess is so messed up um
23:00 with with how they with how they look
23:01 at players and the ratings and everything else.
23:06 Um, I don't think that's a very hot take.
23:08 I don't think there are a lot of hot takes about number one and uh the rating
23:13 list and results in in top tournaments
23:15 of all formats say that he's the second best.
23:19 Oh, thank you.
23:20 Had a fantastic resurgence of his career after co that has
23:25 continued to to this day and he certainly deserves that.
23:29 Crystal chess chess 96 is the best way to determine actual calculations.
23:34 Um, so is freestyle the best way to determine calculation skill?
23:38 I think freestyle chess is the best way to determine um
23:41 best way to determine creativity ability is what I would say skill.
23:49 It's very hard to say.
23:51 I think freestyle says something about raw chess ability, but whether that is
24:00 to kind of discern new patterns when it comes to calculation
24:04 or more positional things mainly that's hard for me for me to say.
24:10 Um but if the take is more about measuring more of kind
24:15 of raw chess ability as I see it then I would rate that take ability.
24:20 Okay, fair enough.
24:21 US is better than Norway in soccer.
24:23 Have you seen the Norwegian?
24:25 I mean, of course, the US is better than Norway,
24:27 but that's not saying very much.
24:29 Team recently we're on fire.
24:31 We're going to win the World Cup.
24:32 So, it's utter nonsense.
24:34 Chess was better before AI.
24:37 Ah, chess was better before AI.
24:38 This is a this is a good question.
24:40 I think that chess I mean I think
24:44 there's more creativity and you would rely more
24:46 on your own brain before computers really took over
24:50 the game specifically in the last five or six years.
24:52 Um but saying better is so subjective.
24:56 So I I don't have actually have a strong take here myself.
24:58 I mean it's very very subjective.
25:00 It's very subjective.
25:04 It's very hard to say.
25:05 It was less accessible that sense it was worse.
25:09 It was probably for a pure playing experience at the highest level.
25:16 Yeah, it was it was better.
25:18 But overall, I would lean towards no.
25:21 My computer password is 20 moves of Ru Lopez theory.
25:25 Well, that would require me remembering 20
25:28 moves of Ru Lopez theory, which I don't.
25:31 So, no.
25:32 What did you think of the takes in the jar?
25:34 Uh, I think a lot of the takes were reasonable.
25:37 Some of them were outrageous,
25:39 some of them were rage bait, which I generally took.
25:44 Thank you guys for watching the Yeah, that's pretty good.
25:47 Pretty pretty pretty pretty good video.
25:49 Um, not Magnus is right.
25:51 There were no like super hot takes in there.
25:53 No super hot takes.
25:54 Um, but AI still is bad and chess were safe.
25:57 You know, the weird thing about chess though is that the notion
25:59 of computers and whe AI or whatever you want to call
26:01 it and whether they like ruin chess is it's only something
26:04 that really applies to the very very very top level of chess,
26:07 like the top 100 players in the world,
26:09 below the top 100 in the world, uh it literally doesn't matter at all.
26:12 Like below the top 100 in the world,
26:14 like chess is still a great game in spite of computers.
26:17 It has no impact whatsoever.
26:18 So that was a pretty good video actually.
26:20 I really did enjoy that.
26:22 So hope you guys enjoy it as well.
26:23 Um and yeah, looking forward to seeing your comments and everything else.
