0:29 insecure that he's constantly building monuments to himself.

0:33 And and and he doesn't really care about anything else.

0:36 He doesn't care that Americans are struggling

0:39 with the price of fuel and the price of food

0:42 and the price of electricity and whether

0:44 or not they can send their kids to SCHOOL.

0:46 WHAT HE'S DOING IS HE'S WILLING TO SAY I'M GOING TO SPEND,

0:50 I'M GOING TO RAISE $250 MILLION AND FUND AN EXTENSION OF THE WHITE HOUSE

0:54 AND MAKE A GRAND BALL ROOM WITH DONATIONS AND THEN THAT BECOMES 400 MILLION,

0:57 AND THEN IT BECOMES SEVERAL HUNDRED MILLION DOLLARS.

1:01 AND NOW IT'S BEING ROLLED INTO A LEGISLATIVE

1:04 PACKAGE IN WHICH ONE BILLION DOLLARS WILL BE RAISED,

1:07 BUT TAXPAYERS WILL BE THE COST.

1:08 AND HE HE DOESN'T CARE HOW MUCH MONEY HE SPENDS

1:12 TO CREATE MONUMENTS TO HIMSELF BECAUSE HE HAS ALWAYS BEEN THUS.

1:17 SO, OF COURSE, THERE'S NO ROOM IN THE WAY HE SEES

1:20 THE WORLD HE IS A POLITICAL PRICE HE IS GOING TO PAY,

1:27 BUT I DON'T KNOW HOW MUCH HE CARES ABOUT THAT EITHER.

1:31 YOU KNOW, I DON'T KNOW HOW MUCH YOU KNOW, I DON'T think he cares.

1:37 But the rest of us do or at least we should and certainly you would

1:44 run the United States GOVERNMENT, HOUSE AND SENATE,

1:48 WHO HAVE APPROVED AND SIGNED OFF ON THE MEN AND WOMEN

1:53 WHO RUN THE EXECUTIVE BRANCH PART OF OUR GOVERNMENT FROM, YOU KNOW,

1:58 THE CABINET secretaries, et cetera, that they would be concerned.

2:01 And yet even given the political realities and hardships here,

2:07 this beautification project,

2:11 the cost THE DISTRACTION THAT HAS BECOME HAS NOT MOVED THEM ONE PIECE.

2:20 WE KNOW THAT THE ASSAULT AT THE BALLOT BOX IS UNDERWAY.

2:24 WE KNOW THAT THAT, YOU KNOW, IS THE GROUND GAME.

2:27 THE DISTRACTION IS ALL THE BRIGHT SHINING

2:29 OBJECTS HERE ON THE MALL AND AROUND WASHINGTON.

2:32 BUT THE GROUND GAME IS STILL FOCUSED ON WHAT IT'S GOING to take

2:37 to hold the House and keep the power going into the fall.

2:41 How do Democrats narratively continue to draw

2:46 the American people's attention to these two REALITIES, OKAY,

2:51 WHILE AT THE SAME TIME LAYING OUT WHY

2:54 IT'S IMPORTANT FOR THEM TO HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY

2:57 TO MOVE THE DIRECTION OFF OF STUPID AND ONTO

3:01 SOMETHING MORE coherent in dealing with the economy,

3:04 more coherent in dealing with the war,

3:07 and more coherent in dealing with the problems of grift

3:11 and graft inside this administration by holding them accountable.

3:18 Well, I think as you know, Michael,

3:20 I think it's about staying relentlessly on message between now and November.

3:24 And reality is giving the Democrats a huge,

3:27 a huge boost in all of this because affordability,

3:30 as much as Trump is running around trying to say it's not an issue.

3:34 It is the biggest issue out there right now for voting Americans.

3:39 And they see it every day when they drive by a gas station.

3:42 Whether it's Simone paying more than $6 a gallon,

3:45 I paid more than $6 a gallon for gasoline

3:48 in Northern California a couple of weekends ago.

3:50 It's over $4 .50 nationally.

3:54 All of these things hurt people in their pocketbooks,

3:57 and Republicans are sitting on their hands.

4:00 And they know that Trump is not focused on what

4:04 they need to focus on going into the midterms,

4:07 which is that the Republicans are better stewards of the economy.

4:10 Republicans have sort of by default been granted that status by voters,

4:15 even if you look at historically economic performance under

4:18 Democrats has been better at the I don't think it

4:34 needs to get any more complicated than that, and they

4:37 just need to do it at a district-by-district level.

4:39 Let's hear from some of those voters.

4:42 These are voters in Minnesota today talking about

4:45 the Trump economy with our colleague, Alex Tabet.

4:50 Have you seen any way in which your life

4:51 has gotten better during this second Trump presidency?

4:56 No, not at all.

4:59 In any aspect.

5:00 No, everything harder to pay for and just I would say like society too,

5:06 you know, a lot more tension than there was.

5:09 I don't think anyone's doing better right now.

5:11 I don't know why people thought the economy was going to get better and stuff,

5:14 and I don't see that happening at all.

5:17 I think inflation was already bad, but I think it's definitely gotten worse.

5:21 I can't think of any way my life has gotten

5:23 better in the past 10 years of any form of government,

5:25 but no, especially not in these past ones,

5:28 because it's just been lies after lies after lies.

5:31 And here's the thing.

5:33 Some of that could just be in the ether, but so much of it is self-inflicted.

5:37 I'm thinking about the fact that you had

5:40 Trump's tariffs be struck down by a trade court.

5:43 And what does he do?

5:44 He comes back saying, well, I'm going to tax them even more.

5:47 I mean, you could just take it and walk away and say it's not working.

5:52 We're changing force, but that's not what they're doing.

5:54 Because it's just what he wants to do.

5:57 He wants to find these pockets of policy

6:00 and within the White House where he can act unilaterally,

6:03 whether that's imposing tariffs on countries that don't do what

6:07 he tells them to do or going to war with Iran.

6:09 And both of those actions,

6:10 both of those actions have economic consequences stemming

6:14 from them that he can no longer control.

6:17 And he went down that path because he's not curious about how the world works.

6:21 He is ill-informed about policy.

6:23 He knows nothing about math.

6:25 And those issues are coming home to rooster him

6:28 in a way that is completely beyond his control.

6:31 And the party is not reigning him in.

6:33 No one in the White House is reigning him in.

6:35 They're all letting him do these things.

6:37 And I think he's going to continue to do

6:39 these things because he can act on his own.

6:41 But it's actually, you know, he's like Yosemite Sam.

6:44 He's just running He's running around shooting himself in the foot all the time.

6:49 Well, to say the least, I mean, he did it again last night.

6:55 I'm just going to play this sound of ABC

8:13 Well, also, I mean, it's a string.

8:15 This isn't the first time he's focused on a female reporter, by the way.

8:20 You know, he's got a long track record

8:22 now in recent months of bullying and insulting,

8:26 physically insulting women who are asking him solid journalistic questions.

8:32 I just think it's worth remembering when Donald Trump says,

8:36 I'm making things more beautiful, Donald Trump has epically bad taste.

8:39 And he isn't actually━none of the projects he has his hands right

8:46 now are monuments to America or to the public who he serves,

8:52 or the public who pays his salaries.

8:55 They're all monuments to himself.

8:57 You know, the triumphal arch that he's proposed building over Memorial Bridge,

9:02 you know, between Arlington and the Capitol is grotesque in its scale.

9:10 It hasn't been met with anyone thinking

9:12 that it's anything OTHER THAN ANOTHER MONUMENT TO HIMSELF.

9:16 SO HE'S NOT BEAUTIFYING, HE'S SELF-AGGRANDIZING.
