The Daily Show

0:02 Hello and welcome to the Precap,

0:04 a daily show podcast where we sit down with this week's host and recap

0:07 some of the news from last week and talk about what's coming up next.

0:10 My name is Nicole Conlan,

0:11 I'm one of the writers at the show

0:13 and I am here with this week's host, Desi Lydic.

0:16 Hi Desi, how are you?

0:18 Nicole, we get to do one together.

0:19 I'm so excited.

0:20 I haven't done one with you yet.

0:21 I know, I love an excuse to hang with you.

0:23 Yes.

0:23 Um now the we're going to get into the news of the past week in a second,

0:27 but the most important thing that I want to talk about

0:29 from the last week is that you were on Jimmy Kimmel this week.

0:32 It is It is the most important thing

0:34 thing and the reason it's the most important thing is that I

0:37 saw that you were there the same day as Meryl Streep.

0:40 Can you even believe First of all,

0:43 I got to follow Jon Stewart every week when I host

0:46 and then I go to Kimmel and he makes me follow Meryl Streep.

0:48 How [laughter] up is that?

0:51 So messed up.

0:52 That just shows that you have an incredible star power that they're like,

0:56 we can trust Desi to go up after screen legends.

0:59 Hardly.

1:00 [laughter] But the the bigger the star, you can just ride those coattails.

1:03 I think that's That was my move.

1:04 you get to meet her?

1:05 Is she cool?

1:07 Okay, I am still having a complete out-of-body.

1:10 I didn't think I was going to get to meet her because I was walking

1:14 onto the stage as she was walking off of the stage down two separate hallways.

1:19 So I thought I kind of went like, "Oh,

1:20 Meryl." And then thought, "Well, that was my chance.

1:23 I never got to see her." And we finished up,

1:25 I went back to the green room and said my goodbyes and walked

1:28 out and she was standing there signing autographs because she's a queen,

1:33 yes, signing autographs for people outside.

1:36 And I was like, "Okay, I have to introduce myself." So I was like standing by

1:41 into the crowd with people who were like, "Yeah,

1:42 I have an [laughter] autograph." I grab I

1:44 grabbed a Sharpie and started signing as her.

1:47 Um they won't notice.

1:48 So I I'm standing off to the side and I'm waiting for her to finish

1:51 and she comes over and someone that she works with introduced me to her.

1:58 And I put my hand out and I go,

2:01 "I am such an admirer." And before I could even finish my sentence,

2:05 she goes, "Oh, I know who you are.

2:09 I watch your show all the time." And I about like I don't

2:14 even remember anything that happened if If Meryl Streep said that to me,

2:17 I would I would dissolve into a fine mist and float away.

2:21 Like And then, she gave me a hug.

2:25 Ugh.

2:25 I haven't showered since.

2:28 [laughter] That's normal for you though, right?

2:29 this is that's totally on brand.

2:31 Um well, that's so cool.

2:32 You were so great on Kimmel.

2:34 What a God, what a weekend.

2:36 He made it very easy.

2:37 [clears throat] I hate you for it.

2:39 I want I want to meet Meryl Streep.

2:41 [laughter] That sounds awesome.

2:42 Okay, now that we have the big news of the week out of the way,

2:45 there's there's a another exciting story that is

2:47 somewhat personal for you because you are from Kentucky.

2:50 The Kentucky Derby was this weekend.

2:52 Derby was this weekend.

2:53 And for the first time, a female trainer Yes.

2:56 horse won the Derby.

2:58 Won the Derby.

2:59 First time ever, which is kind of remarkable, isn't It's super remarkable.

3:03 Now, it's it's worth noting that she didn't win the Derby.

3:08 The horse did.

3:09 Yeah.

3:10 [laughter] Yes, but she did train the horse.

3:11 Yes, she also was not the jockey.

3:13 She did not ride on the horse.

3:14 But it was also the it was the jockey's Jose Oti hor Horace.

3:19 You can say [laughter] that again.

3:21 Wait, this jockey's name was Horace?

3:23 really funny.

3:24 the odds?

3:25 Jose Ortiz was the name of the jockey,

3:27 and I think he's been in the Derby like 11 or 12 times,

3:29 and this was her his first win.

3:31 So, that's exciting for him, too.

3:33 Um and I was looking at pictures of Cherie DeVaux,

3:36 who is the horse's trainer, and the horse afterwards, and they love each other.

3:40 The horse was like nuzzling into her, and they were hugging each other.

3:43 It was really sweet.

3:44 That's really It was a huge win.

3:46 That was a huge moment for her.

3:47 I know that that was her one like that was her dream

3:50 ever since I don't know if since she was a little girl,

3:53 but like since she decided to become horse trainer, she said,

3:55 "I want to be the first woman to win the Kentucky Derby." So, that's it's great.

4:00 We have a little bit of good feminist news Finally.

4:03 Finally.

4:03 Can Can I tell you, this is a total tangent,

4:06 but I'm Fans of mine will know that I'm a huge Murder,

4:10 She Wrote fan and I I just constantly have it on TV in the background.

4:14 There's like 11 episodes of Murder,

4:16 She Wrote where she solves like like a horse racing related murder.

4:22 [laughter] I don't know if it was just like a producer

4:23 on the show like loves horse racing and was like,

4:25 "Do an episode and this will be a tax write-off for me." or what.

4:28 Yeah, maybe they have a pretty hardcore horse racing gambling addiction.

4:32 That's where my mind went to.

4:34 There's There's so many episodes of it.

4:36 It's wild.

4:37 The other thing that I want to talk about

4:38 with the Kentucky Derby is usually there's so many fun horse names.

4:42 This year there were a lot of regal horses.

4:45 Yes.

4:45 There was one called Intrepid Oh, and for the record,

4:49 the horse that won the Derby is named Golden Tempo.

4:53 Right.

4:53 Which I think is fun.

4:55 It's a great name.

4:56 Um Intrepid Oh, is good.

4:58 My favorite of the horse names is Dan and Bourbon.

5:01 Dan and Bourbon is a great name.

5:03 Because it feels like whoever named it was was like, "Shit,

5:06 I got to name the horse." and was just

5:07 like looking around in their fridge and was like,

5:10 "I've got Dan and yogurt Bourbon.

5:13 Fine, [laughter] do it.

5:14 Run with it."

5:14 Put it together.

5:15 It's got Bourbon.

5:16 That'll people be happy.

5:17 Kentuckians love it.

5:19 Yes.

5:20 Incredibolt is good.

5:21 Chief Wallabe is good.

5:23 Now, there was a horse called Great White who fell.

5:26 fell and couldn't even race.

5:29 Yes.

5:29 So, I guess the Great White Race is no longer.

5:35 [laughter] I mean, the horse is okay.

5:37 The horse is fine.

5:38 The horse isn't going anywhere.

5:39 The horse is fine.

5:40 But the race didn't happen.

5:41 The downfall of the Great White Race.

5:43 It truly [laughter] was a downfall of the Great right?

5:45 really tough for Kentucky.

5:46 Yes.

5:47 Yes.

5:48 So, that was that was a big blow.

5:50 Yes.

5:50 Plus the female trainer.

5:51 They they were they were very upset.

5:52 It was tough.

5:53 It's we're being Kentucky is being pushed into the future against its will.

5:57 Yes.

5:57 Um I do think there is something to be

5:59 learned about the Kentucky Derby with the midterms coming up.

6:02 I think about this sometimes.

6:04 They are doing something right in terms of it's a short race.

6:08 You don't have to run a long campaign.

6:11 Yeah.

6:11 Uh they have hard age limits.

6:14 Yes.

6:14 And you can't win more than once.

6:18 Wow.

6:20 Right?

6:19 This is such an insightful point.

6:22 Don't you We We need all of our like

6:24 House and Senate races to operate by Kentucky Derby rules.

6:27 That's right.

6:28 I think we could rip a page out of the Kentucky Derby book.

6:31 falls, for their own safety, they have to be out of the race.

6:34 to be out.

6:35 You fall, you're out.

6:36 And most importantly, you're not allowed to start a a podcast.

6:40 So.

6:40 [laughter] I'd listen to a horse podcast.

6:43 I would, too.

6:44 fun.

6:44 Um speaking speaking of horses and podcasts, uh producer Alan,

6:48 would you mind pulling up the this video that I have?

6:51 There There was a trend on Tik Tok a while ago that I'd love to get

6:54 just your quick reaction to, which is And by the way, I looked this up.

6:58 Everybody and whenever there's like an animal video,

7:00 everyone in the comments is like these animals are suffering.

7:04 I looked it up.

7:04 It's because they're excited.

7:06 These are retired race horses who are just hanging out

7:09 and they are reacting to the Kentucky Derby trumpet sound.

7:12 Alan, will you play this for me?

7:18 [laughter] Oh, no.

7:23 [laughter] [music] It's Thank you, Alan.

7:28 You can cut it there.

7:29 Are they Is it PTSD?

7:30 It's I don't I It's not.

7:32 It's them like They're They're They're bred to run.

7:35 So, I think all of them are like, "Oh, I got to get I got to go.

7:37 I got to go.

7:38 I got to go.

7:38 [laughter] I got to get hydrated."

7:39 They're reacting the same way that like when

7:41 you're in Penn Station and you hear your train

7:44 Right.

7:44 it's like [laughter] about to leave and you're like, oh no.

7:47 You're like in the Dunkin' Donuts line.

7:49 But yeah, I read the comments and I read like horse trainers and they were like,

7:52 it's cuz they love they love running.

7:54 Oh, that's so funny.

7:55 I will say I have a very similar reaction.

7:58 My husband and I got married in Kentucky and we had

8:01 an outdoor wedding and right before I walked down the aisle, I thought,

8:04 you know what would be really funny is if I got the guy

8:07 from Churchill Downs to come over and do the call to the post.

8:11 That's amazing.

8:12 And we hired this guy.

8:13 It was it made us so happy.

8:16 It was so ridiculous.

8:17 We thought it would just be a funny joke.

8:19 [laughter] But then like everyone who was

8:20 sitting down waiting for the wedding to begin,

8:22 they were like, oh my god, are we going to get trampled by horses?

8:24 [laughter] So that horse look that's like the look

8:26 on everyone's face at my wedding when that happened.

8:29 Should we should we duck?

8:30 Do we need to It's I thought it was fun that you sprinted down the aisle.

8:33 I did.

8:33 I did.

8:34 And then I ran right out of there.

8:35 We actually never got married.

8:37 [laughter] Never looked back.

8:39 Yeah.

8:39 Yeah.

8:40 Seems like a nice guy.

8:41 My my husband and I walked out to our reception to the Godzilla.

8:46 Bam bam bam bam bam.

8:49 Which was a lot of fun.

8:50 I fully support this.

8:51 [laughter] Yes.

8:52 It was great.

8:53 Yes.

8:53 So congratulations to Sherry DeVaux and Golden Tempo

8:57 and Jose Ortiz on your big Kentucky Derby win.

9:00 And I hope all three of you got a nice bag of oats at the end of it.

9:04 You all deserve it.

9:06 But we could only enjoy some good news out

9:08 of the South for so long before they return

9:11 to our regularly scheduled Jim Crow policies because the Supreme

9:16 Court ruled that Louisiana's congressional

9:18 map was an unconstitutional racial gerrymander,

9:21 which side note is kind of crazy because this is the same court with the same

9:25 justices that in 2024 ruled that Louisiana

9:29 had to create a second majority black district.

9:32 So they they were like, we're going to start this and we're going to finish it.

9:37 It's It's just crazy.

9:39 And so they make this ruling and according to precedent,

9:42 it should obviously apply to the next election cycle,

9:47 but now the governor of Louisiana has put house races

9:50 on hold so they can implement this ruling right away,

9:53 which is crazy because early voting's already underway.

9:56 Some people have already sent their ballots back in.

9:59 Right.

9:59 It's It's wild and I was listening

10:01 to the story on NPR and this reporter was like,

10:05 "There's a ton of confusion.

10:07 I went to a polling site.

10:08 There were people who weren't sure what to do

10:09 because the house races are on the ballot.

10:11 It's too late to take them off." Officials

10:13 have said that the votes cast won't be counted.

10:16 At the poll, there was no big signage explaining the change,

10:19 just a sheet of all of the races that were supposed to be

10:21 happening that was up on the wall and it had been updated in pen.

10:25 I said that,

10:26 [laughter] too.

10:27 Somebody was just like, "This one's It's like when you run out

10:29 of a special at a restaurant." You're like,

10:31 "I guess we're just not doing this one anymore." 86 the soup.

10:35 Oh, wait.

10:36 I can't say that.

10:37 say 86.

10:37 They can't say that.

10:38 The FBI's going to come after you.

10:39 Watch out.

10:41 So So that whole situation is crazy

10:43 and that is like ongoing because obviously we don't know

10:46 what's going to happen with that because they're

10:47 facing legal challenges and hopefully this will work out,

10:51 but it is crazy that they're trying

10:52 to implement it while voting is already happening.

10:55 It's so like grossly undemocratic.

10:59 And what do you think is inspiring it?

11:01 Could it be that they're not particularly popular?

11:05 Is that Do you think [laughter] maybe they suspect voters are

11:08 not in favor of what the president is doing right now?

11:11 Yeah, it's I I don't know why they would want to gerrymander a way

11:16 a congressional district that would probably be represented

11:19 by somebody who would oppose the president's actions.

11:21 We may never know what the reason is.

11:24 But we can insinuate it, certainly.

11:26 [laughter] Well, I guess we'll never find out.

11:30 We'll never know.

11:31 And and this is like so undemocratic that last

11:36 week when the King of England was here,

11:40 even he was like You guys You guys got to watch it.

11:44 Yes.

11:45 [laughter] Yes.

11:45 Like, I'm a king and even I'm like, this is kind of crazy, right?

11:48 Oh, this is This is a little cringey what's happening here.

11:51 It was amazing how he came in and gave

11:53 that impassioned speech about checks and balances.

11:56 And then all of Congress gives him a standing ovation.

12:00 And I'm like you are the ones in charge of checks and balances.

12:04 You are not upholding the balance.

12:06 This is Everybody in Congress like,

12:07 yes, somebody should do something about this.

12:10 Someone should do This is He's onto something.

12:12 Someone should look into checks and balances.

12:14 Yeah.

12:14 That is you.

12:16 [laughter]

12:16 It is insane.

12:17 Yeah, it's crazy.

12:18 It's crazy to have to be told by the king that we overthrew.

12:23 The country whose king we overthrew.

12:26 Totally.

12:26 Like, you guys need to You get You're

12:28 You're really not being fair to your citizens.

12:31 Yes, he goes back to the UK and he's like,

12:33 really glad they're not our problem anymore.

12:36 [laughter]

12:36 That was a good It was a good outcome.

12:38 He came over and he was doing like a little stand-up routine.

12:40 Oh, I was impressed.

12:42 He He doesn't want to be the king.

12:43 He wants to be like, you know, Paula Poundstone.

12:46 He wants to be [laughter] Paula Poundstone.

12:47 No, he wants to be like Jimmy Carr.

12:49 Yeah, yeah, yeah.

12:50 Yeah.

12:50 Yeah.

12:51 Being the king is fun,

12:52 but he wants to be like on a panel show weekly on the BBC.

12:55 Someone give this man a platform.

12:57 Truly.

12:57 I'd watch it.

13:00 [laughter]

13:00 So, [snorts] uh, thank you to King Charles for your dire warnings.

13:03 I'm positive they won't be heeded, but it's still nice to hear.

13:08 Still nice to hear.

13:09 Yes.

13:09 So, that's a story out of Louisiana.

13:11 And Louisiana gave us another L this week Oh, god.

13:14 because the Fifth US Circuit Court of Appeals,

13:17 which is based in New Orleans, has restricted access to mifepristone,

13:20 which is one of the most common means of abortion in the US,

13:23 which is sometimes referred to as the abortion pill.

13:25 And the way that they did it is by blocking the mailing of mifepristone.

13:31 So, now it's required that the abortion the abortion pill

13:34 be distributed in person at clinics with people physically there.

13:39 Yeah.

13:39 So, I guess we can't be sending loose pills in the mail anymore.

13:43 I don't know what I'm going to get my grandma for her birthday.

13:46 [laughter] Right before Mother's Day.

13:47 Right before Mother's Day.

13:51 Yeah.

13:50 Um yeah, this is horrific and not surprising.

13:54 We kind of knew that this was going to be

13:55 next on the docket that they would hit this as well.

13:58 Yes.

13:58 Meanwhile, like by the way,

13:59 erectile dysfunction pills are so readily accessible.

14:03 I feel like at this point they're on like an opt-out system.

14:08 [laughter] It's like a a West Elm catalog.

14:09 They send you 10 a month and you have to call and say,

14:11 "Stop sending these to me." subscribing to this.

14:14 How am I getting this?

14:15 How did I [laughter] get all this?

14:17 I'm just kidding.

14:17 So easy.

14:18 The little blue pill in the mail.

14:19 Funny.

14:20 Um what drives me crazy about this is

14:23 that this in-person ruling like the arguments

14:25 about it were about like whether or not

14:27 telehealth is like adequate to to you know,

14:31 treat a patient's condition.

14:32 And they're forcing me to defend telehealth, a system I hate.

14:39 [laughter] Like they don't make it easy.

14:40 No, if you have an insurance plan that's like,

14:43 you can pay a copay or for free you could see a doctor on your iPad.

14:47 I'm like, "I'm not seeing the iPad doctor."

14:49 It's so it's the whole thing is so stressful.

14:52 I mean, I do I don't mind.

14:54 I appreciate the Totally.

14:55 Like if I'm like on the road or something and I've

14:57 like twisted my ankle and I can see my doctor, that's great.

15:02 am bad with technology.

15:04 So, to get into the portal and then be on the and it's

15:07 not they don't ever use like Zoom or FaceTime like it's some other

15:12 It's always a portal.

15:13 It's always yes.

15:15 Yeah, and it's a whole thing and then I'm worried

15:16 about being late and I'm sitting there and it's like,

15:18 am I in the waiting room or am I in?

15:20 And is she waiting for me?

15:21 Am I waiting for it's It's a whole I feel your pain.

15:24 Yeah, it's it's so look I will now defend telehealth

15:27 to the death because it is clearly an important service that we need,

15:30 but if I have to download one more portal,

15:33 I'm going to throw my phone into the ocean.

15:35 that.

15:36 I totally understand that.

15:37 Um but there is some good news because the Supreme

15:39 Court uh has put a temporary hold on this.

15:41 So they are going to review it.

15:42 There is a chance that it won't uh you know stand.

15:46 I don't I'm super not a lawyer.

15:48 I can't I can't remember what the LEGAL TERMS ARE.

15:53 [laughter]

15:52 BUT THERE'S A chance that uh this this won't last and it has been overturned.

15:56 So um mifepristone is still available in Louisiana and across the country.

16:01 Maybe the Supreme Court uh took a took some advice from King Charles.

16:05 Maybe those checks and balances really got through to them.

16:08 Yes, let's hope so.

16:09 For this brief moment.

16:10 Yes.

16:11 [laughter]

16:11 So for until we hear otherwise.

16:13 on Saturday, recurring Daily Show punchline Spirit Airlines

16:17 uh announced that it's suspending operations effective immediately.

16:23 Immediately.

16:22 this second while travelers were like

16:24 at the airport ready to board their flights.

16:28 [laughter] And they were just like we're not doing it anymore.

16:30 And in true Spirit Airlines fashion, they will stop operations mid-flight.

16:36 [laughter] On brand all the way to the end.

16:38 You're halfway to Des Moines.

16:39 They're like get out.

16:41 Yeah.

16:41 Eject.

16:43 [laughter] Aw Spirit.

16:44 Yeah, um That's a bummer.

16:46 It It is especially because like there is Look,

16:48 for all that we can make fun of Spirit, it like

16:52 can.

16:52 And we can and we have.

16:54 Um it nobody else was flying people to New Orleans for $35.

16:59 I mean, it it's you can't argue

17:01 with those prices and in today's economy, Yes, truly.

17:04 Yeah, it was great for the consumer.

17:07 Um I don't know if I would say great.

17:09 Okay, maybe not great.

17:10 But it was available.

17:10 It was available.

17:11 It was an airline.

17:13 Yeah.

17:13 It certainly was mostly an airline.

17:16 Yes.

17:17 Um and and so I I was like, okay,

17:19 so if you were on a Spirit flight, like what do you do?

17:22 And apparently, customers who booked directly with Spirit using

17:25 a credit or debit card will be automatically refunded.

17:27 But if you purchase tickets through a third party, like um you know,

17:31 Expedia or whatever, then you have to like deal with them.

17:36 And Spirit's like, you're not our problem.

17:39 Wow.

17:38 It's crazy.

17:39 It's I'm such a tightly wound freak about travel

17:43 Same.

17:43 that I never book with a third party because I've too many times I've seen

17:48 people like have a last-minute flight change

17:50 and not be able to get customer service.

17:51 And so for me, like this is just me getting to be like, I told you so.

17:57 This is the whole Spirit thing is very sad.

17:59 It's it's it's unfortunate for consumers, but it is great for Frontier Airlines,

18:06 [laughter]

18:05 who celebrated by canceling your flight.

18:08 So.

18:09 Yes.

18:09 Yes.

18:10 No matter where you are, that's where you are forever now.

18:13 So who will our new punching bag be?

18:15 I my I think Southwest.

18:18 Okay.

18:18 I've been thinking about it cuz Southwest

18:19 was just bought by a private equity company.

18:21 Yep.

18:21 And it's so funny to me because Sou- Southwest,

18:24 I don't know if you've ever flown them, but

18:27 Oh.

18:27 Of course I have.

18:28 They have the weird like seating system where it's just like a cattle

18:31 call and you don't get to reserve a seat and it's chaos.

18:35 chaos.

18:35 And then now this private equity company bought them and they're like,

18:37 we're going to get rid of the cattle call seating system.

18:39 And everybody's like, I love the seating system.

18:42 [laughter] I love not knowing where my seat is.

18:44 People are it's so mad over it.

18:46 There's a hyper-competitiveness to the process of getting that A.

18:50 You got it you got it like be right on the trigger.

18:53 You got to be first and people get extremely competitive about it.

18:57 I understand that.

18:58 Yeah.

18:58 So it it's I think between like that and whatever

19:01 other changes private equity is going to make, I I think it'll be Southwest.

19:04 Actually, there was a Spirit pilot who it was going to be

19:08 his last trip and he was flying home and he was retiring.

19:12 He was like, this Spirit flight home is going to be my That's retirement flight.

19:16 And then Spirit was like, we don't exist anymore.

19:19 [laughter]

19:19 So, he was like, okay.

19:20 And he just booked himself a ticket on a Southwest

19:22 flight just to go home as a passenger.

19:24 And the Southwest crew found out,

19:27 I think his son was also a pilot and like contacted Southwest.

19:30 And the Southwest crew found out he didn't get to have his retirement flight.

19:34 And so, when they landed at the airport there

19:37 was like a big celebration for him for his retirement.

19:40 That's very sweet.

19:42 sweet.

19:42 Did they have everyone on the plane applaud for him?

19:44 everyone on the plane applaud.

19:44 And then the pilots on the flight were like, he didn't even land it.

19:47 I don't know why he didn't applaud.

19:49 But I guess they did.

19:50 I don't remember what it's called,

19:51 but it's like a water cannon salute or something where like

19:54 they set off water cannons and the plane drove through them.

19:57 [laughter] Is that true?

19:59 Yes.

19:59 They set off water cannons?

20:00 Are you sure that wasn't just like the plane

20:02 ran into it at Newark because something went [laughter] awry?

20:05 I feel like that's something that would happen at Newark Airport.

20:07 fire at the airport and and he was just like,

20:10 I can't believe you guys did all this for me.

20:13 [laughter]

20:13 That's very sweet.

20:14 sweet.

20:15 It's very nice that this guy still got to have like

20:17 a retirement even though his company dissolved in the middle of his trip.

20:21 Yeah.

20:21 Oh, god.

20:22 There's a That's a beautiful silver lining.

20:24 Okay, so who So, we have to decide who our punching bag is going to be.

20:28 You think I think Southwest.

20:30 Southwest.

20:30 I think maybe Frontier is a is a pretty good contender.

20:34 So, tell us in the comments who should our punching bag be.

20:38 Yes.

20:39 Tell us in the comments.

20:41 Yeah.

20:41 And then that'll be the new default Daily Show punching bag.

20:44 You get to help us write our show so we have less work to do.

20:47 Thank you very much.

20:48 less work to do.

20:50 Um So, yes.

20:51 I'm sorry if you were on a Spirit flight and you've become stranded.

20:54 Good luck getting home.

20:56 But, I like this transition, speaking of stranded travelers,

20:59 there's one traveler that I'm very excited to say is no longer stranded.

21:03 And that is a humpback whale named Timmy.

21:05 Oh, Timmy.

21:06 A juvenile humpback whale who has been stranded for several weeks

21:09 off the coast of Germany and they finally got him out.

21:12 They got him out and they've been trying for weeks.

21:14 They tried they untangled him from a net.

21:16 Wow.

21:17 They've tried to guide him out with boats like sheepdogs.

21:20 They tried to dislodge him by using a a big

21:23 boat to like make waves to shake him loose.

21:26 They got like backhoes and dug a big trench to like help push him out.

21:31 Um and this is [laughter] really funny.

21:33 The whale made it away from the coast

21:35 only to become stranded again almost immediately.

21:38 Which is [laughter]

21:41 Which if you've ever had a pet of any kind is like, you know,

21:44 they get their foot like stuck in a box or something

21:47 and you dislodge them and then immediately there's a new problem.

21:49 Oh, no.

21:51 Unfortunately, Timmy threw himself into a cave in Thailand.

21:54 So, we're kind of back to square one.

21:57 Yeah, um we got to get Timmy out of that cave.

21:59 But, what happened is I mean the these were like long

22:03 like long-standing well-publicized efforts over

22:05 a span of months and then eventually

22:07 a couple of German millionaires teamed up and they funded the creation

22:12 of like a giant barge that was like suspended between two ships.

22:16 It was like half the size of a football

22:18 field or something and then they were able to use

22:20 the barge to kind of lift Timmy up and like

22:23 finally take him out to the deep ocean where I uh

22:26 I guess he immediately like went under and then

22:29 came up and like did a big like spray out

22:32 of his blowhole as if to say thank you and then

22:35 he dove dove down and he was off to sea.

22:38 Wow.

22:39 Yeah.

22:39 That is not something you hear often, a heartwarming story out of Germany.

22:44 [laughter] That is it's nice.

22:45 That's so sweet.

22:46 They can absolutely turn things around.

22:48 Yes.

22:49 Um one thing that was funny, there's a whole New Yorker article about

22:52 this that I lost my entire morning to reading.

22:54 I'm obsessed with this story.

22:56 But, I guess so related to the um Thai cave thing

23:01 when the soccer team got stuck in the cave and then

23:03 like Elon Musk and other millionaires were and billionaires were

23:06 coming out with like crazy ideas for how to fix it.

23:10 Um, apparently this same thing was happening with the whales and there

23:14 were a couple weirdos uh uh Wallace who's a uh veterinarian told me

23:20 that another member of the rescue

23:22 operation who called himself the whale whisperer

23:25 insisted on being near the animal to form a spiritual connection with him.

23:29 The whale whisperer was joined by among others

23:31 a YouTuber who went by Danny First Class.

23:33 Both the YouTuber and the whale whisperer think they can talk to the whale.

23:39 [laughter] Wow, which is so funny to imagine a group

23:42 of like very hard working like you've got like backhoe operators,

23:46 you have ship captains,

23:47 you have highly trained veterinarians and then you have a guy

23:50 who's like I need to talk to the whale myself.

23:54 I've got [laughter] this.

23:56 That tracks.

23:56 That that tracks.

23:57 Yeah.

23:58 Okay, cool.

23:59 Thanks for your help, man.

24:00 We're going to keep trying to push this 12-ton whale out of here.

24:04 [laughter] I do appreciate that German

24:07 billionaires are using their money for good.

24:09 That is what we should be doing here.

24:13 Truly.

24:12 Instead we're shutting down newspapers and uh Whenever I see a really

24:16 rich person doing something like that, I'm like the wrong people have money.

24:20 Yes.

24:20 If I were a billionaire, I would be amazing at it.

24:23 Yes, you would.

24:24 be funding independent films.

24:26 I would be creating animal rescues.

24:29 would.

24:29 You would be MacKenzie Bezos.

24:31 Thank you.

24:32 Yes.

24:33 Yeah.

24:33 She's doing it right.

24:34 She's the only one

24:35 Literally doing it right.

24:36 Yeah.

24:37 It's crazy.

24:37 Um, so so best wishes to Timmy,

24:40 the German humpback whale who has been released back into the ocean.

24:44 You have given us something to be happy about this week.

24:47 Thank God.

24:48 All right, let's look ahead to this week and what's

24:50 coming up that you might be talking about on the show

24:53 and a kind of the big thing that I'm

24:54 thinking about for today is the Met Gala is tonight.

24:57 is tonight.

24:58 I can't wait.

24:59 Um the Met Gala traditionally is like an annual

25:01 fundraiser that supports the Met Museum's uh Costume Institute.

25:07 Um and so this has been going on I mean decades at this point,

25:10 but now it's become weirdly it it is still making money for the Met,

25:15 but it now is like sort of its own like business and advertising operation.

25:22 Oh, yeah.

25:22 Um and one of the big controversies this year is that uh

25:26 Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez are going to be the co-chairs.

25:30 Yes.

25:30 What is the theme this year?

25:32 It is art camp.

25:34 Oh, no.

25:34 Sorry.

25:34 [laughter] You go.

25:37 I mean the theme loosely every year I think is income inequality.

25:40 It's the same [laughter] theme.

25:42 I personally think that if Jeff Bezos is going to go to the Met Gala,

25:45 he should have to wear clothes from Amazon.

25:48 Of course he should.

25:49 That should be required.

25:52 [laughter] Of course he should.

25:53 You got to back it up.

25:55 a weird plastic shirt where one of the sleeves

25:56 is like a little longer than the other.

25:58 [laughter] It's your business, you got to stand by it.

26:00 Stand by it.

26:01 Go all the way, man.

26:02 Go all the way.

26:03 to start selling Prada on Amazon.

26:05 Yes.

26:05 If that's If If he wants to wear that tux,

26:09 then he's got to supply it on his website.

26:11 I do I do love that the Met Gala

26:12 comes around and everyone suddenly turns into a fashion critic.

26:16 Like I'm sitting on my couch in sweats eating Flaming Hot Cheetos being like,

26:21 "That drop waist bodice is all wrong." [laughter]

26:25 We don't know what we're talking about.

26:27 Yeah.

26:27 Um but look, if I can judge somebody, I will.

26:30 One thing that personally drives me a little

26:32 crazy is when people don't dress to the theme,

26:35 which by the year the theme is costume art and the dress code is fashion is art.

26:41 Um which can be interpreted in a lot of ways,

26:44 but like sometimes like I remember when there was the Americana theme

26:48 um and people came like in various iterations of like the Statue

26:51 of Liberty or historical figures or or like um things that represent

26:54 Americana and then some people just come in like a nice dress.

26:59 Play it safe.

26:59 You can't play it safe at the Met.

27:01 If you're going to go, you got to go all the way.

27:03 Yes, that's how I feel.

27:03 You know who kills it every time is Janelle Monáe.

27:06 She always looks totally incredible and her outfits at the at the Met

27:10 Gala are always so um she is gorgeous, so she can wear like a crazy outfit.

27:16 Like if I went to the Met Gala,

27:17 I I would dress to the theme, but I would be like,

27:20 "But I want to look pretty." But since Janelle Monáe always looks pretty,

27:23 she could be like, "Yeah, I'll wear a crazy like zoot suit or whatever."

27:26 God, I love her.

27:27 But for fashion is art, I'm interested to see what they how people play with it.

27:33 Yeah.

27:33 [gasps] Cuz there's a lot of like um oh, I can't remember if it was Cavalli.

27:38 I don't know, I'm so not a fashion person, but it is the

27:41 like you already know 100% more than I do.

27:43 There's a very famous dress that is like a Mondrian painting

27:46 and Mondrian is that artist who does like the blocks of primary colors.

27:50 And so I think there's probably going to be a lot of that.

27:52 I'm guessing somebody is going to probably look like a statue.

27:55 Of course.

27:56 Um but I'm I'm really interested There's There's

27:58 so many like ways to make cool structural garments.

28:01 That that part of it I get very excited about.

28:04 The Bezos of it all really is throwing me for a loop,

28:07 but yeah, but I the fashion candy I I get very excited about.

28:11 We do kind of forget We get so caught up in the the pomp

28:14 and circumstance of it all that we

28:16 forget that this is actually a museum fundraiser.

28:19 So I'm I'm wondering if this is

28:21 how we actually fund the Department of Education.

28:24 Could we do it that way?

28:25 Just have celebrities show up in like

28:27 a fur and a bustle to Roosevelt Elementary?

28:30 Truly, if we did that, I would be fine with it.

28:33 If we did anything to like actually fund social programs and some

28:36 of it was just like continually throwing parties for these rich people, fine.

28:40 Come on.

28:41 I'll take it.

28:41 Let's turn it in We'll turn it into a whole thing.

28:44 Yeah.

28:44 Nobody has a reason to get dressed up anymore,

28:46 so this is this will this will be an opportunity for rich people

28:49 to get to show off the way too many clothes that they bought.

28:52 And then also, maybe kids will get school supplies.

28:54 Yes.

28:54 Plus, I have never been invited to the Met Gala,

28:56 but I feel like I might get invited to the education fundraiser.

28:59 [laughter] That That I could probably get an invite to.

29:03 tell you what, YouTube commenters,

29:05 I want us to all start a campaign to get Desi to the Met Gala next year.

29:11 Was it You guys Sponsored by Elon Musk.

29:13 Figure out the hashtag or whatever we have to do,

29:15 we're going to get Desi to the Met Gala next year.

29:17 you for this.

29:18 Thank you.

29:18 But only if you wear something crazy for the theme.

29:20 Oh, are you kidding me?

29:21 You don't have to ask me twice.

29:24 So, we'll keep an eye on the Met Gala tonight.

29:25 Whatever crazy updates come out of the the regular news.

29:29 I I don't even want to bring anything

29:31 up because it's like every night at 11:00 p.m.

29:33 I'm like looking through the news and I'm like,

29:35 well, tomorrow's show's going to completely change.

29:36 So, we'll see what happens in the news.

29:38 The only other thing that I know for sure is coming up is Mother's Day.

29:41 Oh, yeah.

29:42 Uh your mom?

29:44 Do you have any plans?

29:45 I uh I want to keep it simple this year.

29:47 I I think I just want to sleep in, Great.

29:51 wake up late to a new administration, and that's all.

29:54 [laughter] That's what every mom wants.

29:57 simple ask.

29:58 Every what every mom wants.

29:59 Get your mom what she wants this year.

30:01 Yes, please.

30:02 New administration.

30:03 be nice.

30:04 [laughter] That would be nice.

30:05 No, I actually uh my mother-in-law is in town this weekend,

30:08 and we're going to go see The Devil Wears Prada.

30:10 Oh, that's perfect.

30:11 So, we're we're watching Meryl.

30:13 That'll be great.

30:14 Yeah.

30:14 Every mom's mom.

30:15 Every Every mom's mom.

30:17 Yes.

30:17 [laughter] Oh, if only.

30:19 If only.

30:20 Yeah.

30:20 Um all right, that brings us to our final segment of the podcast,

30:24 which is our recommendations, things that we want to share with our audience.

30:29 I'll go first this time cuz I have

30:30 something that's sort of Mother's Mother's Day adjacent,

30:33 and I always recommend this for like

30:36 a movie to watch when you're visiting your parents.

30:39 Oh, always always looking for that.

30:41 I need to put on something that is like not not too racy or too

30:46 like structurally confusing for them but also

30:48 something that I'm like vaguely interested in.

30:51 And this is a documentary that came out maybe

30:52 about 10 years ago and it's called Tim's Vermeer.

30:57 Is this about the whale again?

30:58 It is not about the whale.

30:59 [laughter] with this whale.

31:01 It's not about the whale, I promise.

31:03 Different Tim.

31:04 It's called Tim's Vermeer and it's about this guy who's um you know,

31:09 maybe in his 50s or early 60s.

31:11 He's independently wealthy.

31:12 He lives in Texas and for um like a long time

31:16 there have been some art critics who have analyzed the paintings

31:19 of Vermeer and been like there's evidence that he may

31:23 have been using like early camera technology to make these paintings.

31:27 And this guy Tim who lives in Texas uh became

31:30 independently wealthy because he made like a visual effects company.

31:33 So this is something he's interested in.

31:35 Um and he was like I'm just going

31:37 to try to use my money to fully recreate Vermeer's

31:40 studio in a warehouse in Texas and I'm going

31:42 to see if I can recreate this Vermeer painting.

31:45 And he does this over the span of like three or four years.

31:47 He the like he like goes to Amsterdam to like purchase authentic

31:54 like props and stuff that Vermeer would have had in his studio.

31:57 He learns how to speak Dutch.

31:59 He like it's it's it's wild spoiler alert because the documentary's really

32:04 about the journey not the destination.

32:06 He creates a painting that looks a lot like a Vermeer painting.

32:10 It's really interesting.

32:11 Um it's produced by Penn Jillette.

32:14 So there's a lot of Penn Jillette Oh, interesting.

32:16 as well.

32:17 This is when you're independently wealthy and you live in Texas,

32:20 this is what you do.

32:20 When you're a millionaire, you recreate Vermeer's studio and you're like,

32:24 yeah, I'm just going to paint.

32:26 And he has no painting experience or anything.

32:28 So the fact that he's able to do this is like really pretty astounding.

32:31 That's incredible.

32:32 And you watched this with your parents?

32:34 It's the perfect It's the perfect movie to watch with parents.

32:36 So if you're visiting your mom uh for Mother's

32:39 Day or like my dad's birthday is coming up, I'll probably throw it on War Home.

32:43 This is like I cannot tell you what a perfect movie it is for parents.

32:46 Excellent recommendation.

32:48 I saw something over the weekend that I

32:49 do not recommend that you see with your parents.

32:52 Highly recommend not seeing it with your parents.

32:54 There are a lot of dildo jokes.

32:55 Awesome.

32:56 Um well, just the right amount of dildo jokes for me,

32:58 but too many if you were to watch with your parents.

33:01 I saw Titanic Oh, I've heard nothing but good things about it.

33:05 It is so funny.

33:07 Um is it is Well, I'll you tell me about it.

33:10 Marla Mindelle stars in the show, also co-wrote the show,

33:12 and she's going to be a guest this week.

33:13 So, I I went I had to go for research,

33:16 but it is totally a show that I would have gone to on my own.

33:19 Thoroughly enjoyed it.

33:20 It is nothing but just pure ridiculous fun.

33:25 So, Marla plays Celine Dion,

33:28 who has a very different interpretation of how the events

33:31 uh played out on the Titanic as Celine Dion,

33:35 who was there at the on on that day.

33:38 Really funny.

33:39 So, it's like this is kind of like a like an O Mary.

33:41 It's funny alternate history.

33:43 Very much in the same in in the same vein as O Mary, for sure.

33:47 And it's like a big, wonderful queer fever dream.

33:53 It's just musical.

33:55 It's a musical.

33:56 Okay, I got to see it.

33:56 is excellent.

33:57 Uh like a jukebox.

33:59 Great.

33:59 They use a lot of Celine songs.

34:00 I don't know how they got them cleared, but they did.

34:03 I mean, maybe they just wrote to her, and she was like,

34:05 "Have you seen Celine Dion is very like kind of funny and weird." And you

34:09 wouldn't know it cuz she has the voice of an angel and makes like you know,

34:13 music your mom listens to.

34:14 Yes.

34:15 Um but did you see a few years ago

34:18 she for Christmas got like spent fully just hours

34:22 in a makeup chair to get made up like the Jim

34:24 Carrey Grinch and just walked around all day like that.

34:29 [laughter] And she like does an impression uh where

34:32 she sounds just like him where she's like, Am I just eating because I'm bored?

34:37 [laughter] Here we go.

34:36 Yeah, this is look, there she is.

34:38 Alan, can you play the video?

34:40 Who are all those who's inviting me down there on such short notice?

34:44 Even if I wanted to go, my schedule wouldn't allow it.

34:49 [laughter] She's so weird and funny.

34:51 I love her so much.

34:53 I I would say quirky.

34:55 Like I always knew she was a little quirky.

34:56 That is a new level.

34:58 That makes me love her so much.

35:00 Oh my god.

35:01 Yeah, it's it's really funny.

35:02 Okay, Titanic, I'm going to go see it.

35:04 Now, you have to see it for research.

35:06 Is there a way that I could also have to see it for research?

35:10 I'm sure we could we could try to write it off on my taxes cuz it's for work.

35:15 It is worth a shot.

35:17 Yes.
