0:06 And the last time you saw this car, we were actually at the racetrack and we

0:09 discovered that this thing is a bonkers fast.

0:12 Did 147 mph on the back street at the IR.

0:15 And B, there are a lot of places that we can improve on it.

0:19 So, in this episode, we're going to make some changes.

0:23 We got a lot to do.

0:24 We got a lot to do.

0:26 Ah, yeah.

0:27 So, we do need a catch can ASAP.

0:33 We need to make it so that the car will actually

0:36 turn a lap without filling up the intake tract with oil.

0:40 The issue is because the engine that we

0:43 have in this car was originally intended to be

0:45 used in a minivan and Toyota Siennas are

0:47 not usually pulling a lot of lateral G- Load.

0:49 So, I've got this little catch can from a company called Wilhelm Raceworks.

0:53 And uh he designed this to fit in a uh engine made of a MR2 SW20,

0:59 which is the generation that came before this.

1:01 The one that everybody likes.

1:02 Yeah.

1:02 The one that I like.

1:03 Yeah.

1:03 Right.

1:04 Uh cuz you hate all my cars.

1:05 We got to figure out where it's going to go.

1:07 We got to take the intake off cuz it protrudes through the engine cover.

1:14 And this was just kind of a temporary

1:16 thing because we had a track day coming up.

1:17 Something else we're going to change is this intake

1:19 position before we go back out on track.

1:21 This catch can is designed to drain back into the oil pan.

1:27 Uh, which makes sense because a lot of oil

1:29 is getting pushed out into the catch can.

1:31 It's either going to fill up the catch can

1:33 or it's got to it's got to drain somewhere, right?

1:35 It's the same thing I do on my Evo, but we need to weld in a bung on the oil pan

1:41 in order to uh actually have somewhere to drain it back into.

1:45 So, the oil pan's got to come out.

1:46 While we're under here,

1:47 we're also noticing that we've got some leaks here where it's

1:50 the oil pan is uh mating up to like the upper oil pan.

1:54 We're touching right here on this sweet exhaust and this this motor mount.

1:58 The motor mounts probably got to get clearanced

2:00 a little bit cuz this is a project car.

2:01 So, let's start with draining the oil.

2:04 Then, we can take the oil pan off.

2:06 A that's not looking the greatest.

2:09 Uh Ben, I've seen it this color just usually with coolant in it.

2:12 I know what it is.

2:14 I know what that is.

2:16 That is E85.

2:17 I was like, you know, that smells just like my Evo oil.

2:20 My Evo oil always looks insane coming out,

2:22 too, because you've got the fuel dilution.

2:25 The fuel in the the E85 like seeps into the oil.

2:29 I've actually I'm not worried about it at all.

2:32 The oil is ugly coming out, but that's the effect of running E85.

2:37 confident that I haven't blown a head gasket.

2:39 We proceed with dropping the oil pan out of the MR2

2:41 so we can weld a bung on to it.

2:44 I also remove a part of the exhaust so I can clearance the motor mount.

2:47 You can actually see right there where it was rubbing a little bit.

2:50 So I just marked there and we'll just clearance that.

2:54 Just grind that down a little bit right on that edge.

2:58 And that'll help with fitment.

3:11 To split and remove the oil pan from the block,

3:13 I use my favorite tool for this job, a drywall putty knife.

3:26 Bada bing.

3:27 This is how your grandpa used to do drywall.

3:30 If if we had smellvision, all you would be smelling right now is E85.

3:34 The whole purpose of that was now we need to clean

3:39 that and take it to get a bum weld onto it.

3:43 In the meantime, we are going to pivot and work

3:45 on some other stuff uh that we needed to correct.

3:48 A big thing that I was hearing from Kobe Shield,

3:50 who was my pro test driver the first time that we took the 2GR to the track,

3:54 the car feels really fast,

3:57 but the suspension is sprung for an engine that weighs like 100 lb less.

4:02 Just with the speeds that we were seeing,

4:04 we wanted to have stiffer spring rates.

4:06 Uh, and honestly, we're still on single adjustable coilovers.

4:09 So, there's a lot of room for improvement considering this is a unlimited

4:14 car with no no rule set that it needs to abide by.

4:31 Now that is a Fortune Auto 510 coilover.

4:35 Single adjustable.

4:36 You adjust rebound and compression all with one knob.

4:40 Right.

4:41 This is a Fortune Auto Pro 2-way

4:44 with a remote canister for additional fluid capacity.

4:48 And on this remote canister, you can adjust your compression.

4:51 So, we've got rebound adjustment on the strut

4:54 and we've got compression adjustment on the canister.

4:56 This is going to level us up massively.

4:58 I didn't really realize how big of a deal

5:00 two-ways were until I put some on my Evo.

5:02 I didn't really think it was going to make a noticeable difference.

5:04 It made a tremendous, gigantic difference.

5:07 And the Evo was significantly faster and more

5:10 comfortable to drive fast after I went to two-ways.

5:14 And this is an absolute track dedicated car.

5:18 The Evos, you know, street street track hybrid.

5:21 This is 100% track, baby.

5:23 So, it needs some two-ways.

5:25 And uh this is going to make us go a whole lot faster.

5:28 Kobe asked for stiffer spring rates.

5:31 So, we've got 7Ks for the front and we've got 10Ks for the rear.

5:39 Uh, stepping up from a 7K.

5:41 Going to take apart the old one first because

5:44 we're missing some stuff obviously on on the two-ways.

5:50 We're going to need all this, all this.

6:03 So, Ben, what you're telling me is Yep.

6:06 This is a good car, right?

6:07 Yeah, this is a good car.

6:08 Better better than Ben's car on track.

6:11 You would say uh the Civic.

6:15 I mean, at the moment, it is faster.

6:26 Speaking of Ben Thorne and his Honda Civic,

6:28 I am not the only person building an unlimited

6:32 He's got the Civic, which he's turboing.

6:33 He's going to go as fast as he possibly can on track.

6:35 Of course, he will not be going quite

6:37 as fast as the MR2 as we have already proven.

6:40 Uh, but the competition isn't only on track.

6:42 We have both got our own shirt designs for our respective unlimited build.

6:48 In my case, of course, I've got the Toyota Unlimited Racing Development MR2.

6:52 And in Ben Thorne's case, he's got his Honda Civic,

6:55 which he's turboing and all that.

6:57 And that is on its own shirt,

6:59 also kind of in a NASCAR inspired style, and they are available at oildrip.shop.

7:04 Unlike on track, where we decide who wins,

7:07 you guys get to decide who wins with merchandise.

7:10 Uh because whoever sells more shirts will be the victor.

7:14 Maybe don't buy a Civic shirt and do buy an MR2

7:16 shirt or buy a Civic shirt and then buy two MR2 shirts.

7:18 You know, that would be phenomenal.

7:44 While Mark is working on those two ways, we have to camber arms.

7:49 Ooh.

7:51 This is going to be our camber arm.

7:53 This is going to be our toe arm.

7:55 And then this is going to be our uh trailing arm.

7:59 Going to get to replace all

8:00 of these stock components uh going into our subframe, which is also not stock.

8:05 We'll have very little stock suspension still remaining on the car.

8:11 The axles are aftermarket.

8:12 The coilovers are Fortunado two-ways.

8:15 All we need is an aftermarket knuckle.

8:29 So, we've got on these Techno Toy tuning arms

8:31 are these uh these are called pillow ball mounts,

8:33 which are great for race cars because there's there's no cushion,

8:40 there's no rubber bushing,

8:41 there's no deflection, there's no comfort, so they're also bad for street cars.

8:45 We have this subframe here.

8:47 This uh aftermarket subframe for the 2GR.

8:49 Well, it's not for 2GR, but we made it work.

8:52 The the upside is that it allows us with these bolt

8:55 holes here to change the pickup points of our arms.

9:00 We can lower the car but still adjust

9:02 by putting our arm connecting in a higher bolt hole.

9:06 We can keep the the droop angle

9:09 that you want to have with factory suspension geometry,

9:12 which you want factory suspension geometry.

9:15 Otherwise, as you lower the car,

9:16 the suspension arm angle gets flatter and flatter.

9:20 So, how what do you do?

9:22 You know, can you do you lower the car and compromise

9:24 suspension geometry or do you keep it higher and compromise aerodynamics?

9:28 You do neither.

9:29 You just get one of these aftermarket

9:30 arms with this uh turnbuckle design where it's

9:34 able to rotate in the sensor and you

9:37 can reach whichever bolt hole you want, right?

9:39 And that's really the only way that we

9:41 could take advantage of this uh aftermarket subframe.

9:44 So, that's huge.

9:45 Trying to make aftermarket stuff play with aftermarket stuff.

9:48 Yeah, you could probably shave that.

9:50 Well, they the subframe came with uh with some aftermarket parts

9:54 companies do not build their parts to work with each other's parts.

10:00 They built them to work with the the factory thing.

10:03 They're assuming your car is bone stock.

10:05 Trying to combine these arms with this subframe.

10:08 This bolt will go through when there's no arm in it.

10:12 Okay.

10:13 But then when there's an arm installed, I can't get the bolt to go through.

10:18 And I was very confused as to why the bolt wouldn't go through.

10:22 And then I realized it's because the eyelet uh of the pillow

10:27 ball mount just is touching on the bottom of the subframe.

10:30 So that's as high as it goes.

10:32 So now the three holes are not one hole

10:35 is lower in the middle than the other two.

10:40 Heat.

10:42 Heat.

14:08 In order to mount the external reservoirs that came

14:11 with the two-ways on the the Fortunado coilovers,

14:15 um we are going to use some really nice hardware from a company called RS Pro.

14:21 Uh it's run by a buddy of mine named David.

14:23 Uh they do a bunch of like 3D design and aluminum work like

14:27 these clamps and where you can mount

14:29 your external reservoirs like to a roll cage.

14:32 uh or in this case, we're just going to riv nut these.

14:35 And then uh we can just have our external reservoirs mounted, hard mounted,

14:40 and all you have to do is pop

14:42 the rear engine cover and you can adjust your compression.

14:46 Um it'll be really, really nice.

14:48 Super nice uh product.

14:50 They come in a ton of different sizes,

14:52 and they can, you know, custom make stuff for you.

19:24 These uh MR2s get a good bit of lift

19:28 in the nose from air getting stuck in this empty

19:32 void here under the engine or uh not engine

19:35 cover under the the front cover because there's no engine.

19:39 So there's just it's just a big cavity for air to collect.

19:42 So this is going to let that air escape.

19:44 And I don't think this is actually going to fit

19:46 quite yet because we have to relocate the power steering.

19:51 We're hitting right here on the power steering pump.

19:55 MR2s obviously famously have uh electronic

19:57 power steering or electric power steering.

19:59 A lot of people use MR2 electric power

20:02 steering pumps for like their project cars or whatever.

20:06 It makes it easier to relocate this pump cuz

20:08 it doesn't have drive belts or anything running to it.

20:10 You want to try that?

20:17 We don't need the latch.

20:19 Then Oh, wow.

20:28 That's more weight savings right there.

20:33 So, yeah, it's not like the the hood used to have great fitment.

22:43 The good news is the color of the tip is even.

22:46 So, that means that the flange part shouldn't be warped.

22:50 It's not ideal, but it is better than I expected.

22:53 So, in addition to this oil catch can, uh,

22:55 which we can now use because we have a bung welded onto the oil pan,

22:59 Wilhelm Raceworks also made this, uh, which is an oil pan baffle.

23:03 He sells these.

23:04 He's got four in stock right now on his website.

23:06 He designed this because the 2GR engine when it

23:10 sees uh right hand turns with a lot of geforce,

23:13 like sustained geforce, the oil in the pan will tend to slush away

23:18 from the pickup and then you'll start to see oil pressures dip.

23:21 The baffle, it actually keeps oil with the pickup

23:24 and and blocks it from quickly running

23:27 away uh from where it needs to be in the pan on those uh gloed corners.

23:32 We're just going to RTV it and then stick it

23:34 up on there on the studs that are on there.

23:36 Uh put a nut on to hold it on while we prep the pan.

23:39 Then we'll put the pan on.

23:40 And you literally just sandwich this in between

23:43 the pan and uh the upper oil pan.

23:46 And that's it.

23:48 Pretty pretty simple fix.

23:49 Pretty cheap part.

23:50 It's like a hundred bucks and uh could potentially save your engine.

23:54 So we did all that oil pan stuff.

23:56 one so that we could get that baffle plate in there

23:58 and help prevent oil starvation when we're on the track.

24:02 But it all originated from the fact that we need to put this catch can in.

24:05 So now that we have the bung welded onto the oil pan,

24:08 courtesy of Ben, we need to locate the catch can.

24:12 I think we're just going to like set it roughly here and say

24:16 we will put a tab on so that we can attach it here.

24:20 Here and here actually.

24:21 That's perfect.

24:22 We've got two riv nuts in here already.

24:24 So, we could just actually I mean we can fabricate something just like clamp it.

24:30 If we just get some flat bar, it wouldn't be

24:33 it wouldn't be visually apparent, but you know, it's a catch 22.

24:37 I mean, it's a catch can, but catch can 22.

24:40 In the meantime, I've got a bunch of the stuff that we need for fittings.

24:44 This is all -6 here.

24:47 The PCV valve we want to take off of the head and put it in here.

24:53 We just need to extend this hose.

24:56 This 3/8 hose which goes into the intake manifold.

25:00 We need to extend that over to here.

25:50 This is what happens when you're safety first.

26:28 This is the reason for the catch can.

26:30 The oil gets stuck up in the heads of the engine.

26:33 Positive crankcase ventilation sucks bunch of oil.

26:36 You wind up with a bunch of oil that's trapped up, gets sucked into the intake.

26:40 Car starts burning oil.

26:41 So hopefully the catch can solves this.

26:52 So, now we're going to replace the check valve that we

26:55 took out of the valve cover over here with this AM bond,

27:02 which is BSP on one side and -6 on the other.

27:09 In the competition between Ben Civic and my MR2,

27:14 whichever car has more A fittings on it will be faster.

27:19 So, we just got to make sure we we use them where we can.

31:42 I thought that we were going to have to uh run this drain back

31:46 line all the way around the back of the motor into the oil pan.

31:52 And I had that all routed up.

31:54 I had like a very gradual slope, super long, super inefficient.

31:58 Then Mark found that there actually is

31:59 space in between the motor and the firewall.

32:02 That's nice because this is a much more direct path,

32:05 which means that the oil can travel at a steeper incline

32:09 and flow more efficiently than if it's kind of just slightly downhill.

32:15 So, in this episode of the MR2 build series, the first one for 2026,

32:19 we have accomplished an oil pan baffle,

32:21 an oil pan drain back to relieve crankcase pressure,

32:25 rear suspension arms so that the car can retain its suspension geometry,

32:28 two-way coilovers from Fortune Auto,

32:30 and mounted the remote canisters at least in the rear.

32:34 We'll finish up the front in the next episode.

32:36 And speaking of the front,

32:37 Mark has done a phenomenal job fitting that fiberglass

32:40 hood onto the car and that is going

32:42 to be really good for reducing the floatiness

32:45 of the front end of the car on track.

32:47 And Mark, I think in the next episode we need to do something about this.

32:51 This is uh not a permanent solution.

32:55 And I think the solution that we're going

32:56 to use for that is sitting in the driver's seat.
