i got rid of (almost) everything

0:13 up I had a normal amount of clothing

0:15 most parents are not funding an experimental wardrobe

0:19 but I dreamed of having a closet packed with clothes and so the second I started

0:23 making my own money I started buying clothes

0:25 I found this one online for really cheap

0:27 on a weird website so it's probably fake

0:29 like a lot of clothes I couldn't control

0:32 myself I've probably bought thousands of articles of clothing

0:35 I really thought that having a closet full

0:38 of clothes could bring me joy would inspire

0:41 me I thought I would be infinitely more fashionable and stylish I could not have

0:45 been more wrong actually and then I'd have

0:47 a Moment of clarity I'm literally getting rid

0:50 of half of my closet I'm getting rid of this I'm getting rid of this I'm

0:54 getting rid of this I'm getting rid of this I'm getting rid of all of this I'm

1:00 getting rid of these and all of this and this here's the thing now that I've

1:08 cleaned out my closet I want to go shopping but I was making space for the wrong

1:13 reason I was making space so that I could buy more clothes Meanwhile my entire

1:18 fashion philosophy was backfiring there was so much

1:21 in my closet that I couldn't even grasp

1:23 what I owned ironically what would end up

1:25 happening is I would just wear the same thing every day because I could not pick

1:29 out an outfit because there were too many

1:31 choices I'd usually start with one piece and then

1:33 I try to build around that but building around that would take sometimes 2 hours

1:37 so I was always stressed out always pressed

1:39 for time and it gets worse I would put all this effort in and I was

1:43 rarely satisfied when I'm putting on an outfit

1:45 I'm looking for a few things I want

1:47 to feel like I look good I want to be physically comfortable and I want

1:51 to exude a certain Vibe accomplishing all three

1:54 when you have a closet filled to the brim

1:56 with clothing is really challenging because you're experimenting

2:00 every day when I went in my closet to get dressed I was experimenting and it

2:04 just it wasn't working what did we learn

2:06 from this Emma needs to stop shopping I need to clean up my closet maybe I'll

2:10 do that today not only did I have

2:13 irrational emotional attachments to many items in my closet

2:17 but I also had this naive optimism that one

2:21 day the pieces of clothing in my closet that I don't wear would come in handy

2:25 I kept anything that remotely had potential

2:27 but 2 or 3 months ago I went into my Clos it to do my routine

2:31 Purge and the goal was the same as it's always been narrow it down to stuff

2:36 that I truly wear I've gone in with that goal attempted it and failed many

2:42 times but this last time it actually worked

2:47 I actually did it I actually brought someone

2:50 into my closet with me because clearly doing

2:52 it alone wasn't working and I told them

2:55 to be honest with me tell me when something's ugly remind me that I never wear

2:58 that piece of clothing be honest with me over the course of probably 72 hours I

3:04 managed to get rid of I mean probably 95% of what was in my closet I

3:11 got rid of stuff that was too loud

3:13 and too flashy anything that I'd probably only

3:15 ever wear once because it's so loud it's

3:18 such a statement piece I got rid of stuff

3:20 that was too trendy I got rid of stuff that I really like but doesn't fit

3:25 me right I got rid of stuff that I haven't worn since I was a teenager

3:29 Maybe I was just keeping it because it

3:31 held some sort of sentimental value I only

3:33 kept stuff that I'd truly truly be sad

3:36 to lose I only kept stuff that I'd actually

3:39 notice if it was gone I was left with sort of a capsule Wardrobe not

3:46 to drop a buzzword on you like

3:49 that but a capsule wardrobe for those who don't know

3:51 a capsule wardrobe is a concise amount

3:54 of clothing and accessories that all mix and match

3:57 together to create almost inite amounts of outfits

4:01 it's about having a cohesive vibe in your closet

4:05 so that you can have less items but because they all go together you can have

4:09 more outfits now listen I still have a lot of stuff let's be clear it's not

4:14 like I have a uniform but compared to what I had before this is nothing nothing

4:19 this is nothing compared to what I had

4:21 before because I trusted my intuition and I

4:25 only kept stuff that I considered to be

4:28 perfect I was left naturally with a capsule

4:31 wardrobe and this was kind of a dream come true in a way because I didn't

4:35 really have to do anything I didn't have to go out and buy anything you know

4:38 I already had everything I was left

4:40 with a really impressively concise capsule wardrobe I feel

4:44 like I have a sort of distinct color

4:46 palette black white cream gray olive green maroon

4:51 and blue a little bit of brown I mainly stick to Maroon but I have some

4:56 bright red a bit of bright green when it comes to metal for the most part

4:59 I wear silver but I still have some gold stuff the vibe of my entire closet

5:04 to me is cohesive like every single thing

5:07 for the most part goes together like you

5:09 could pull two random things from my closet

5:11 and there's like a 90% chance that they'll

5:13 match prior to this if I were to have pulled two pieces out of my closet

5:16 and try to pair them together it wouldn't

5:17 have been good it would have been a catastrophe

5:21 okay so anyway this is everything that I kept [Music] I fear I must start here

5:38 the outfit that I wear probably 80% of the time it's these orange shorts in one

5:46 of my many really soft t-shirts that were

5:48 randomly selected to be one of my pajama

5:50 shirts a lot of outfits for me start with a white tank top it's a building

5:54 block I'll give you an example check this out cute in lace you see it's kind

5:59 of kind of incredible to be honest there's a lot of character in this top I

6:02 just feel like a dainty Little Flower hi um I'm not even quite sure that I

6:07 think it's flattering I'm going to keep it till next summer see if I wear it

6:10 if I don't then I will donate it beige what color is it this is definitely

6:18 my favorite tank top of all time the little pocket is just it has a little

6:23 anchor on the button OMG this is one of those things that I got vintage

6:29 and I just cherish it cream little mock neck I love a mock neck people are all

6:33 focused on like buying basics for their closet

6:36 that are white and they forget all about

6:38 cream this is a sweater vest that is way too tight to layer cuz I usually

6:43 would layer a vest so it's sort of just become a tank top for me

6:47 and it's like a nice gray taupe color

6:49 like it's not quite gray it's not quite taupe

6:52 it's it's its own thing I'm not trying to be cocky or anything like I truly

6:59 do believe in humility however I know that this color looks good on me I just

7:05 know that so to own a short sleeve mock neck in this color to me it's

7:13 just common sense I'm not trying to make a big deal out of it or anything

7:15 but I just know that this color brings out my eyes I know that you're looking

8:58 comfortable and yes I do have it in other colors and in those other colors it

55:30 of the reason why I ended up with such a ridiculous amount

55:34 of clothing was because I wanted to keep up with the internet

55:40 you know like it's all about always wearing a new outfit experimenting

55:47 in hopes of starting new trends following existing Trends posting shopping Halls

55:53 there's a fashion hamster wheel on the internet and I was

55:57 on that hamster wheel I'm not proud of this but like I did

56:00 not want to wear the same thing twice on Instagram I wish

56:03 that that wasn't true okay I'm not proud of that I'm actually very

56:06 ashamed of that because in retrospect it's ridiculous I sort of knew

56:10 deep down that I needed to get off the internet fashion hamster

56:14 wheel but it was sort of impossible until I figured out my wardrobe

56:18 situation I feel like I didn't understand the concept of personal style

56:22 until this experience like this experience showed me that prior to this I

56:28 didn't really have a personal sense of style it's impossible to have

56:32 a personal sense of style when you have every single different aesthetic

56:36 in your closet at your disposal at all times how are you

56:40 supposed to narrow down your Vibe when you have every Vibe and you're

56:44 experimenting with every Vibe every single day I think for a long

56:47 time you know experimenting with different Aesthetics and stuff like that was

56:50 a hobby of mine and it was something that helped me learn

56:53 more about what I like however it was impossible to find

56:59 a sense of personal style with that type of over stimulation the way

57:03 that I figured out my personal style was not responsible okay I wouldn't

57:09 recommend it to anyone me spending like five six years of my life

57:13 buying unnecessary amounts of clothing I don't even know is there

57:17 a word that's like more than

57:18 unnecessary like ridiculous amounts of clothing becoming

57:21 overwhelmed by it and realizing I I made a mistake then donating

57:25 9 90 95% of it and being left with my personal style

57:29 and my capsule wardrobe listen that's how I ended up here but I

57:33 wouldn't recommend it to anyone else I felt repulsed at the piles

57:38 of clothing sitting outside of my closet during the cleanout process I

57:42 felt sick to my stomach okay even though all of these clothing

57:45 pieces are you know being donated and hopefully we'll get to have

57:49 another life it still just felt incredibly wasteful the amount of like

57:53 the amount of pieces that I never even got to wear more

57:56 than once or twice like it made me feel sick I felt

57:59 like a gluttonous Pig I felt like a gluttonous Pig

58:03 and and to be honest I am a gluttonous Pig I was a gluttonous

58:08 Pig like let's not sugarcoat it and after getting rid of all

58:11 the clothes in my closet in experiencing the Peace of owning a normal

58:15 amount of stuff I'm so off of all of it now

58:17 hindsight is always 2020 being somebody who loves fashion and loves clothing

58:22 this was sort of an inevitable part of my fashion Journey that I

58:25 had to go on however you know if I were to give

58:28 advice to my future child I would say don't experiment through buying

58:33 stuff experiment through shopping in person and trying things on be really

58:39 selective about what you buy and only buy things when they're perfect

58:41 the more you have the less personal style you'll have [Music] the [Music]
