11:00 He uh nine days ago hyperextended his knee in a disgusting fashion.

11:04 So much so that I didn't even want to run it on the show.

11:06 One of those types of injuries.

11:08 Like, hey, don't even want to see it again.

11:10 When it gets on the algo,

11:11 you want to make sure that your phone doesn't see you seeing it

11:15 and pausing on it cuz they will feed that type of to your algo.

11:18 So, whenever those types of knee bends start popping on the algo,

11:21 you got to you got to make sure out out.

11:23 Don't want to see it.

11:24 There was a little bit of a run there on X where they were showing us

11:27 terrible things.

11:28 And if you accidentally were like,

11:29 "What is it?" Then it was like, "Oh, good for you.

11:32 There's more right around the corner.

11:33 You're going to get that that type of injury."

11:35 It was disgusting the way his leg bent.

11:36 I don't know how he didn't tear anything.

11:39 Instead, he just bruised a bone.

11:42 And obviously, he was under an incredible amount of pain,

11:44 and nine days later, he comes off the bench,

11:46 puts down 18, talks his gets a huge win in the San Antonio Spurs house.

11:52 We'll talk to Chris Paul in just a matter of moments about all this.

11:54 I'm sure he has much better thoughts than we do.

11:57 But the thought that WBY gets a triple double.

12:00 And then some of them they're saying he's getting calls on the defensive side.

12:06 A lot of great basketball players get calls on the offensive side.

12:13 I think every NBA player that we've talked to, every NBA person

12:15 that we've talked to said you can go back and check history.

12:18 Every good player gets calls.

12:22 How about Webby getting calls on the defensive side.

12:25 such a good blocker in my eyes that the refs are hesitant to call anything.

12:29 Now feels like a couple of these my dumbass eyes who

12:32 do not play hoops cuz they said that definitely hit the backboard.

12:35 Now, one of them I don't think uh we could really be able to figure out,

12:39 but I think WBY has become such a monster that he can touch

12:42 anything that the refs do kind of give him calls on the defensive side.

12:46 And I think that's why the Timberwolves

12:47 coach immediately afterwards was like, "Hey,

12:49 it would have been nice to get a couple

12:50 of those goend." I think they're all trying to put a little

12:52 public pressure on this thing to start happening because there's

12:54 a chance that this does become a thing for WMBBY.

12:56 The refs are scared to call it

12:58 because it's almost like disrespectful to the greatest

12:59 shot blocker in the history of the game is what some people are calling WBY.

13:02 12 blocks in a game in a playoff game at that is I mean it's ridiculous.

13:06 Every time you go in and take a shot, you step inside that three-point uh line,

13:11 it's a risk of him getting up there and getting it.

13:13 He is I mean he's he's an alien when

14:36 but it does seem as though he's stepping into more of a leadership role.

14:39 And, you know, that's the other thing about the T- Wolves,

14:41 they've been here a few times.

14:42 It's not like, you know, with the Spurs,

14:44 the Spurs are kind of slowly getting their playoff legs under him,

14:48 kind of understanding the moment, understanding the game.

14:51 The T-Wolves have, you know,

14:52 they've beaten teams in multiple years that have been better,

14:56 quote unquote, better than them.

14:57 I mean, obviously the T- Wolves were 12

15:00 12 and a half point underdogs last night,

15:01 but still like they have that experience and now the Spurs

15:04 are trying to figure that out, but Antman's a dog.

15:12 five on five for some players when Antman basically blew

15:15 his knee out and then nine days later is playing.

16:18 These top three, what I think we're going

16:19 to do going forward is after we talk to you,

16:22 it's going to be our three big takeaways from our conversation with you.

16:24 So you don't have to actually piece them together,

16:27 but this felt like a massive piece of our convo earlier, Chris.

16:31 Yeah, man.

16:31 That's that's a big win for them, especially for Ant coming off the bench.

16:35 I think they said that was his first playoff game coming off the bench.

16:38 He finished with 18, had 11 in the fourth.

16:40 That's a when you going on the road in the playoffs,

16:43 you just want to try to steal one.

16:44 And if you can win the first one,

16:45 then you feeling really good going into the second game.

16:47 Okay.

16:48 So, him coming back after nine days with a bone bruise,

16:50 I know it's been talked about a lot with like it's not a torn ligament,

16:53 it's not a pulled muscle or whatever, but with other players in the past,

16:57 all we've heard about is a uh need to go oneon-one,

17:05 like what is the entire process and can anybody just say I'm

17:10 playing and they're kind of forcing the team's hands to let them play?

17:14 How does that whole process work?

17:16 It's the playoffs.

17:17 It's different, right?

17:18 When he when he hurt his knee and I saw him hyperextended.

17:21 I I was uncertain.

17:22 You just never know probably until people get MRIs back.

17:25 But for him and knowing sort of what did somebody say

17:29 the grip or whatnot that he plays with he's a gamer, right?

17:33 So ants a gamer.

17:34 Everybody different, too.

17:35 Everybody not built the same in this league.

17:37 There's some guys at times that may get injured, let it linger.

17:41 You just never know and you you can't detect how hurt somebody is.

17:44 But he one of those guys that just love to hoop.

17:46 So I I wasn't surprised to see him playing.

17:49 Does he feel like an old school player whenever you meet him,

17:51 play against him, watch him play,

17:52 because I think that is something we as outsiders look at Ant as is like,

17:56 "Oh, he feels like an old school

17:57 guy." Is that something that's an accurate depiction?

18:00 Yeah, he definitely got an old soul and uh he he played with a lot of joy.

18:04 He gonna pop it.

18:04 He gonna talk a little bit, you know what I'm saying?

18:06 But he can back it up, you know.

18:08 And I think one of the dopest things that he

18:10 did is if you listen to his postgame interviews,

18:13 he was talking about how he could be better, right?

18:16 He's talking about his turnovers.

18:17 He was talking about things like that.

18:18 And that's leadership.

18:19 Whether he it's his fault or not,

18:23 he understands who he is and how to build up his teammates.

18:27 So that's that's big and that's growth.

18:28 that little mid-range thing that he's always been very committed to.

18:32 Him and SGA both.

18:33 It's like uh just feels different.

18:35 Yeah, it feels different than what it had been though for a while, right?

18:38 Because Steph kind of changed everything when everybody

18:40 that seemingly was under 6'5 is like, "All right,

18:43 every shot is going to be a three and then there felt

18:46 like there was a lot of room." It happened in our sport.

18:48 Everybody got real small and real fast

18:50 and then you could take advantage of people, you know, a little bit of power.

18:53 For you guys, it felt like everything got real

18:55 spread out and then the mid-range became wide open.

18:57 The mid-range too.

18:58 mid-range killer entire career.

19:00 Yeah.

19:00 So, did that happen?

19:01 What what changed the game was analytics, right?

19:05 Analytics.

19:05 Everybody started talking about you need to shoot this shot,

19:08 you need to shoot this shot.

19:09 And what it really is, you just need to make shots.

19:11 And if you watch games,

19:13 usually the most crucial shots of the game end up being mid-ranges

19:17 or or spots where guys are just a little bit more comfortable.

19:21 The very first practice when I got to the Houston

19:23 Rockets um years ago when I I left uh uh LA,

19:29 they put up a shot chart in the locker room.

19:31 They showed us where they wanted us to shoot the ball from.

19:34 I'll never forget it.

19:35 It was they had a shot chart from the year before and I think it

19:38 was one shot that Ryan Anderson had took outside of the paint and they was like,

19:42 "Yeah, we don't want no shots from right

19:44 here." I remember sitting in the locker room like,

19:47 "What the hell y'all bring me over here for?" Yeah, no doubt.

19:50 cuz you a point guard obviously driving and running everything out there.

19:53 So whenever you you think about the high percent

19:56 whenever you're deciding where you're going with the rock.

19:58 Okay.

19:58 And you said analytics and you said uh made

20:00 shots as opposed to which shots is a winner.

20:03 We say that with uh every time they say seven points

20:05 is more than three points whenever people decide to go for it.

20:07 It's like well three points is more than zero points though.

20:09 So how where do we

20:12 where do we kind of draw the line on what what matters in comparison to?

20:15 But when you're point guarding does your game change with the players?

20:18 Does your game change with the style of play

20:20 and did you realize there was a vastly

20:21 different style of play from beginning of your quarterback

20:24 career verse end of your quarterback career?

20:27 Way different.

20:28 Way different.

20:28 And I also believe in analytics too.

20:31 But I think there's a happy medium.

20:32 When I first came into the league,

20:34 I realized the final score was 75 to 70 or 80 85 to 80.

20:39 That's the score at halftime sometimes now in the league.

20:42 But what what made us really good in in Houston, I tell you,

20:46 while I while I was there was because it gave

20:49 us the ability to shoot threes and then those teams

20:52 that were being a crazy drop and try to stop

20:55 James or different guys to get to the rim,

20:56 I was able to do the mid-range and just mix it in.

21:00 At the end of the day, you you want to win the game.

21:02 Whatever you got to do to win the game, you do it.

21:04 Can you still shoot it or No, you probably Did you lose that?

21:08 No, don't play with me like that.

21:11 Never know.

37:23 And what's the biggest adjustment,

37:25 especially for young star players in this level?

37:29 Um, my first time making it to the playoffs was my third year in the league.

37:34 And we actually beat Dallas uh 4-1 the first playoff series.

37:39 And what you what you learn is that every game is different.

37:45 When you win by 30, 35 in one of the games, it does it doesn't matter.

52:10 the trainer of Golden Tempo,

52:12 won the most electrifying Kentucky Derby that I have ever seen.

52:16 That trainer, the icon, the one that'll be stamped in the history books,

52:20 ladies and gentlemen, Sherry Devel.

52:37 feeling as you etch your name in history and also

52:40 the horse that you obviously love and care for and trained

52:43 has a massive dub in the biggest race on earth.

52:46 Can you tell me about the feelings as you

52:48 watch Golden Tempo fall behind and then start moving?

52:51 Was this the plan all along, Sherry?

52:53 And how much faith did we have?

52:56 So he's he's a deep closer.

52:58 He finds himself towards the back of the pack.

53:00 I think he just likes to let all of his buddies do the heavy lifting and then he

53:04 has a really nice turn of foot towards the end of the race in all of his races.

53:08 So he comes with a with a burst of speed.

53:11 Um and you know, so I was watching the race

53:14 unfold in front of him and felt there was

53:18 pace and it was up to Jose to to navigate

53:21 the run with golden tempo and he executed it perfectly.

53:25 But um as he started making his run, that's your heart gets pumping.

53:30 And then when he came up to Renegade and they

53:32 those two hooked up and we got our head in front,

53:35 it was just surreal.

53:36 Okay.

53:36 Well, congratulations on all those feelings.

53:38 Obviously, that's what all the work is for.

53:40 So, you can feel that as it's coming down the stretch

53:43 and then the excitement immediately upon

53:45 realizing that Golden Tempo has done it.

53:47 You said and talked about Golden Tempo as if it was a human.

53:50 Golden Tempo just lets all his buddies kind of do all the hard

53:53 work at the beginning and then kind of catches up and does it.

53:55 Is that kind of how you I should be viewing horses?

53:59 Like they all do have their own individual personalities.

54:01 Like when you're training them, whenever we're coaching somebody,

54:03 we try to reach the person that we're coaching.

54:05 Training is similar with horses.

54:07 You have to like there's different ways to reach each horse.

54:09 And how do you figure that out with Golden Tempo?

54:12 Well, most definitely it is an individualized

54:15 approach or the way I train anyway.

54:18 Um, each horse is going to be different just like players are going to be

54:22 different and you have to uh taper your training to get the most out of them.

54:27 So, you know, Golden Tempo, he's he's a relaxed horse and um that's his whole

54:32 being and it's his whole demeanor around the barn.

54:35 Um but, you know, he is talented and and when

54:38 he needs to make that run, he makes it.

54:40 So like goalie, we were in a kind of a holding pattern in our um

54:44 derby preps and then coming out of uh Louisiana and the Louisiana Derby,

54:49 we really keyed him in to just really try to hone in and try to tighten him up.

54:53 Um he was kind of a little on the heavier side,

54:57 so we needed to really put a couple stiff works into him.

55:00 Um and that made all the difference.

55:01 Stiff works is like a cardio session like you would

55:04 do with a a player or an athlete like a workout.

55:06 And then how does Golden Tempo handle that?

55:08 You got to, hey, it's for your own good.

55:10 It's for your own good.

55:11 Hey, you got to do this.

55:12 Like, how is that relationship between trainer, horse, player, coach?

55:16 Because from my understanding, these horses are like mystic be like,

55:19 uh, they're like very intelligent obviously and incredible athletes.

55:23 The relationship probably matters pretty big, I would assume.

55:27 Well, it does.

55:28 Um, so I'm I'm the coach, but we also have um exercise riders and Jose

55:34 Breezed um once his key work Jose was on.

55:39 So I give it the plan and um it's up to them to enact enact it.

55:45 So the riders are pivotal in in getting enacting what I

55:50 come up with in in training and um it just worked out,

55:53 you know, and the horse has to respond

55:55 and coming come out of those works in great order.

55:59 So um you know, unlike human players,

56:01 they can't tell us how they're feeling if they feel

56:04 knocked down from the work or if they're hurting anywhere.

56:07 So we really have to hone in on those little key inu nuances.

56:11 Yeah, I love it.

56:12 And obviously those two minutes are absolutely electrifying.

56:15 But obviously those aren't the only two races of the season.

56:19 23 to1 odds.

56:20 Wild fun win for a lot of people.

56:22 Go ahead con man.

56:23 Yeah Sher, when it comes to racing and not just the derby,

56:26 just every race because you've been training for so long.

56:29 Do you have a sense that you'll win every single race that your horse is in?

56:33 Like are you that confident regardless of what the odds are

56:36 or is there kind of a real realistic expectation going into it?

56:40 And did you feel different about Golden Tempo?

56:42 Did this feel like, okay, this might be the year that we win the Kentucky Derby?

56:48 Well, I I do try to have realistic expectations

56:51 and after he won his first prep at the LA Comp,

56:54 we we can see that the speed figures needed to improve and he needed to improve.

57:00 So, we did talk and he finished third in his subsequent derby preps.

57:05 And the conversation was,

57:06 let's get him to the derby and make sure he's

57:09 improving so that we have him peing on derby day.

57:13 So his his odds were 23 to1 and they

57:15 were rightfully so just by his past performances.

57:18 I was feeling super confident in in Golden

57:21 Tempo and Jose's ability to get him there.

57:23 But uh realistically, it's the Kentucky Derby.

57:26 Many go their whole life uh many trainers go their whole life

57:29 without hitting the board in that race or being in the race.

57:34 and to be a one and you know I I went there once and and we got it done.

57:37 I I had you know I had confidence but I couldn't believe it actually happened.

57:43 Okay.

57:43 You talked about the many trainers that never get to the Kentucky Derby.

57:46 Obviously you've won it.

57:50 How did you get into all this?

57:51 We saw that in 2018 uh you started your own.

57:54 You kind of became a head trainer.

57:56 I believe you left Chad Brown and Chuck Simon.

57:59 Rest in peace.

57:59 I believe you were assistant trainers with him.

58:01 When you were a kid, how have you been in the horse game?

58:03 Like did you do like 4H?

58:04 Like how did you were you on a a farm?

58:07 How do how do we get into horse racing in training?

58:10 It's kind of a a funny story.

58:11 My parents are involved in um in harness racing and they took a sbatical.

58:18 Um they lived up in Saratoga area so they took a sbatical,

58:22 moved to South Florida.

58:24 I was I always have had horses in my life.

58:26 I used to compete in rodeos.

58:28 Um, I went to school for premed.

58:30 Um, mainly because I wanted a job that I could afford horses in my life and um,

58:36 my parents I I paid for my own college and my parents unceremoniously dropped

58:40 me off at college and went back to New York and changed my residency.

58:44 But that is what uh,

58:46 forced me to move back to New York and I went to um, college up there.

58:50 And my mom, I needed a summer job and she said, "Well, there's this job.

58:54 You just walk the horses.

58:55 You can be done by 10." And I was like, "That's good.

58:57 I can wake up early, be done.

58:59 Um, and I started as a hot walker.

59:01 Um, you know, just by happen stance of where my life led me.

59:05 I love the story.

59:06 Wow.

59:07 I love the story.

59:09 Going to have to become a brain surgeon if we want

59:11 to afford these damn horses because of how expensive they are.

59:14 Obviously, we've seen that uh celebrated as we look at the Kentucky Derby.

59:21 a big conversation about like does the Derby winner run it or not?

59:25 And I'm not gonna act like I'm a horse expert.

59:27 Feels like it is a huge combo every time it happens.

59:30 Have you made the decision or how does that is Mr.

59:32 Vinnie Viola, incredible owner obviously of the Panthers and of Golden Temple.

59:36 How does that all come together?

59:39 So we're I just got back.

59:40 It's been a whirlwind couple days and um I just got back

59:44 to the to Lexington and um he's going to go back to the track tomorrow.

59:49 We'll give him a couple days uh just to see how he is.

59:52 and um he Golden Tempo will dict he's going to dictate the decision,

59:57 but we're also going to talk about,

59:59 you know, whether we think a cut back in distance

1:00:02 um off two weeks rest is really what's best for him.

1:00:05 So, there's a lot of conversation right now.

1:00:08 We're all just enjoying the moment, but um we'll get to that.

1:00:42 energy because we are going to cut him back in um you

1:00:46 know so there's a lot of factors that go into that and you

1:00:49 know we we just haven't had a chance to have a informed

1:00:52 conversation with and put everyone's input in um and then like I

1:00:56 said golden tempo you know he could be sound but a hard race

1:01:00 can knock him out and you know we he just might need

1:01:03 a little bit more time to get in to get back into feeling himself.

1:01:08 Hey how about it you're now in the position to have

1:01:10 to figure out whether or not we're going to run for it.

1:01:13 You know, like a lot of trainers, a lot of trainers probably talk about it.

1:01:15 A lot of there's probably a lot of uh Monday

1:01:21 And obviously the outside world that loves Golden Tempo,

1:01:24 especially after what we just watched at Kentucky Derby,

1:31:09 they got guys that can get the puck in and keep it in the offensive zone.

1:31:23 but I feel if that series won another game or two games,

1:31:26 you know, Tampa would end up coming out on top.

1:31:29 Montreal figured it out.

1:31:30 But I look at the same thing for Minnesota.

1:31:33 They have to make Colorado play defense.

1:31:36 You know, you want to talk about their weakness.

1:31:38 Great players and offensive and skilled players do not want to play defense.

1:31:42 So, you have to force Kale Mar and these guys to play 200 feet from your net.

1:31:46 In order to do that, their third third and fourth line got to go to work.

1:31:51 They have to get pucks in uh deep.

1:31:53 They got to cycle.

1:31:54 They got to bring that offensive pressure.

1:31:56 They got to put that offensive heat on Colorado.

1:31:58 If you don't, they will pick you apart.

1:32:01 this series will be over very very quickly.

1:32:03 So for me, the the luxury of playing against Dallas,

1:32:06 Dallas had a great power play and I think Minnesota learned how

1:32:09 to deal with an offensive team that was clicking at that rate.

1:32:13 So Colorado scoring goals isn't going to shake Minnesota.

1:32:16 I think we saw that when they went down three nothing and came back.

1:32:19 So what's my message to Minnesota?

1:32:21 Apply more pressure.

1:32:23 You need to tilt that ice.

1:32:26 They got to be skating.

1:32:27 Their D got to be involved.

1:32:28 Minnesota can't sit back and and that's the whole message of this playoffs.

1:32:33 Players are too skilled and too talented for a team to say that we're

1:32:37 going to sit back and rely on our goalending and our defensive structure.

1:32:41 You have to push the envelope at some point in time.

1:32:44 And when you open the game up,

1:32:45 that's when the NHL is the most

1:32:46 exciting because guys are going to make mistakes.

1:32:48 There's going to be bounces.

1:32:49 So this series, I don't expect

1:32:51 this game tonight to be another high-scoring game.

1:32:54 It could be, but I think these guys tighten it up.

1:32:56 And if I'm Minnesota, they're going to have to tighten it up.

1:32:59 But their breakouts and coming through the neutral zones

1:33:02 got to be clean because if they're not clean,

1:33:04 El Mar and company will pick them apart.

1:33:07 This is an experienced team, championship pedigree.

1:33:10 They know how to win and they showed that in game one.

1:33:13 So for for Minnesota, I think there's a lot of positives to take from that game.

1:33:22 I saw things that Minnesota was able to do against

1:34:28 that comes in that plays like Quinn Hughes in a very, very long time.

1:34:35 defenseman right now because of his resume and what he brings.

1:34:40 Watching these two go back and forth.

1:34:45 but watching these two go back and forth is going to be a sight to see.
