DJI Mavic 4 Pro | 168mm Telephoto with D-Log & Insane Subject Recognition!
Potato Jet
0:00 Now, inside this bag is the Mavic 3 Pro.
0:02 And inside this bag is the brand new Mavic 4 Pro.
0:05 One of my personal favorite upgrades is not
0:07 necessarily something you see on the spec sheet,
0:10 but something you will definitely notice every single
0:11 time you actually go and use the drone,
0:13 which is how long and tedious is the process
0:16 of getting the drone out of the bag, booted up, set up, and into the air.
0:20 I don't know, maybe it's just my impatience or laziness,
0:22 but the less painful it is to use something, the more often I'm going to use it.
0:28 Now, if you were paying close attention,
0:30 you may have noticed a few details that gave the Mavic 4 Pro the victory.
0:33 While the Mavic 3 Pro is still fiddling with those thumb stick things,
0:37 something I've been complaining about forever.
0:39 Instead of having to screw and unscrew your thumb sticks
0:42 in, I wish that it could just fold in itself.
0:45 This controller.
0:46 Ooh.
0:47 Okay.
0:47 Dang.
0:48 It's just a big old screen.
0:50 So, how's this work?
0:50 Does it Okay, it flips up and Oh,
0:53 you like how it just turned on without me pressing and doing the tap and hold.
0:57 I just got to go through the setup here.
0:59 But dang, this is a chunky screen.
1:02 I like that.
1:04 Wait a second.
1:05 I did not install these.
1:07 This.
1:07 Now we're talking.
1:09 I go down and so does the thumb sticks.
1:13 Thank you.
1:14 Now, you may have also noticed that I
1:15 didn't actually have to power on the drone.
1:17 When you unfold the legs, it automatically boots up.
1:20 That's cool.
1:21 Like, at first, it kind of surprised me, but now it's like, oh, that's awesome.
1:23 Like, I I would much rather have that.
1:25 Just a little bit faster when you're out in the field.
1:27 One less step.
1:28 Yes, it turns on automatically, too.
1:30 It turned on.
1:30 I didn't do I didn't press the button on nothing.
1:32 So, you just folded the legs out.
1:33 It turned on.
1:34 It turns on.
1:34 How do you turn it off?
1:36 The same way.
1:36 So, by default, you have to turn it off the normal way,
1:39 but I turned on the setting where it should just turn off when you collapse it.
1:44 Okay.
1:44 So, that's a setting.
1:44 That's an option.
1:45 Now, even though DJI has been one of my favorite sponsors,
1:47 they've always allowed me to talk about the things I love about
1:50 their stuff as well as the limitations I find as long as it's accurate.
1:54 So, after we're done with all our tests and flights and comparisons,
1:57 I will let you know what my favorite
1:59 and least favorite thing about this Mavic 4 Pro is.
2:02 All right, so now to the good stuff.
2:03 We have three cameras just like we did before,
2:06 a wide angle, a mid, and a telephoto.
2:10 And we have solid upgrades to all three of them.
2:13 So, first of all, DLOG across the whole board.
2:16 Not just DLOG M, but DLOG, full-on DLO.
2:19 And when the Mavic 3 came out two years ago,
2:21 I felt like it was very exciting at the time
2:23 because it gave us a really good wide angle lens,
2:26 but it really just gave a lot of us a taste
2:30 of what telephoto lenses can do out of a drone.
2:33 But when it first came out, it had a lot of limitations.
2:35 But now the super telephoto is, I would say, very usable.
2:38 I mean, it's full DLOG.
2:39 It has the frame rates I want.
2:41 We also have a larger sensor in the super telephoto.
2:44 It's a one over 1.5 in sensor.
2:47 You do the math.
2:48 I mean, it's much bigger than the 1/2 in sensor that used to be in here.
2:52 And it's not quite as large as the one over
2:54 1.3 in sensor that we see in the mid lens,
2:58 but the fact that I can finally really comfortably use
3:01 the super telephoto out of this Mavic 4 Pro is awesome.
3:05 Your first side by side here, yours is sharper.
3:08 That's what I'm noticing.
3:08 Oh, yeah.
3:09 Yeah.
3:09 Instantly like way cleaner cleaner image.
3:12 Yeah.
3:12 Let's do a 5x.
3:14 Yeah.
3:15 Way more details on the pants.
3:16 like your beard for example.
3:18 I can see your facial hair on the four,
3:20 but on the three it's like it's just All three cameras gotten an upgrade,
3:24 but the super telephoto is probably the one I'm most excited
3:26 about cuz I've been wanting to use that lens for so long,
3:29 but it's just never quite clear enough.
3:32 It's never quite crisp enough.
3:33 But that being said, the wide angle having an f2.0 lens opposed
3:38 to your f2.8 is a nice upgrade as well.
3:42 So, Mavic 3 Pro is maxed out on its low light right now, but Mavic 4 Pro,
3:46 I can go ahead and just open up that lens to f2,
3:49 and that already gives me a lot more low light.
3:51 But also, I could go up to ISO 3200.
3:53 Look at that.
3:55 And I can even go further.
3:56 6400.
3:57 Oh, jeez.
3:58 That's crazy, huh?
3:59 That's awesome.
4:00 Look at that low light difference.
4:01 Oh my god.
4:02 Jeez.
4:02 Yeah.
4:03 That's actually incredible low light.
4:04 Can you see how dark it is outside on the camera?
4:07 It's like this makes it look bright outside.
4:09 Crazy.
4:10 I could see your face in the vehicle.
4:12 Oh, yeah.
4:13 This is with our mid-range lenses.
4:16 I see more lens flare on the three.
4:18 Maybe I just have a hood that cuts a little bit earlier.
4:21 Or just the glass is higher quality glass over here.
4:24 These are just theories.
4:25 We don't actually know.
4:26 There's more dynamic range, too.
4:27 We had perfectly matched exposure settings.
4:29 And look, you're already clipping here on the mountain.
4:32 So, the mid lens is 70 mm on both of our lenses.
4:36 But what's interesting is on the controller, for you it shows up as a 3x lens,
4:40 but for me it shows up as a 2.5x.
4:42 And the reason for that is because my wideangle
4:44 lens is a little bit tighter in than yours.
4:47 So my wide angle is a 28.
4:49 Mine is a 24.
4:50 Right.
4:51 It's measuring it off of that.
4:52 Exactly.
4:53 So I have a 100 megapixel mode.
4:55 100 megapixel mode.
4:56 I'm actually kind of surprised that the 100 megapixel has a raw with it.
4:59 It's a DNG file.
5:01 111 megabytes for one photo.
5:03 That's good.
5:03 Let's go 10x like full extreme.
5:06 I mean, it is sharper.
5:07 It is better.
5:08 I get more detail here in the snow.
5:10 Mhm.
5:10 It's sharper.
5:11 Trees also.
5:12 Do you have different modes in terms of resolutions or anything?
5:15 I have mode called low battery.
5:17 We just took off at the same exact time, right?
5:19 Yeah, pretty much.
5:20 You're at 18 17% now.
5:22 I'm at 45 still.
5:23 Holy crap.
5:24 Yeah.
5:25 And we've been doing the same exact fight and we've been out here for a while.
5:28 Yeah.
5:28 Oh, snap.
5:29 I got active track for birds now.
5:31 What is that?
5:32 a bird.
5:32 I found a bird.
5:33 Yeah, it knows that it's a bird.
5:35 Now we're talking.
5:37 Oh yeah.
5:38 Like how it dives down like that.
5:39 Like that's hard to track.
5:40 I think I should do some 4K 60 here.
5:43 Oh, that's so cool.
5:45 Wow.
5:46 Frank, oh my gosh, look at this.
5:47 Oh jeez.
5:49 The sun is red right now.
5:50 It's blasting the Look at that.
5:52 Oh, look at this tracking though.
5:53 That's pretty impressive, huh?
5:55 That's very Oh, dang.
5:56 It literally We just lost the sun on it.
5:58 Tell it to go up higher cuz it was just hovering there.
6:01 It was not.
6:01 I thought that was you.
6:02 Yeah, that was crazy cuz it was just stand still,
6:05 but it must have just been flying against
6:06 the wind and it just like perfectly still.
6:08 Oh, if I could get the bird with the moon with the background.
6:16 So, I've actually used this bird mode before.
6:19 Flashback to my very first flight.
6:21 You It's got a boat icon.
6:23 That's insane.
6:24 But look at this.
6:25 Oh, snap.
6:26 Was it like tracking all of them for a moment?
6:28 When you see the plus, it's like, which one of these do you want to select?
6:32 So then you could just toggle between the different ones.
6:34 Honestly, I was really impressed because just look how hard
6:36 it is to see the birds even with your eyes.
6:38 Now, in this situation, the active track was definitely losing it.
6:41 I have to keep grabbing it.
6:42 But that's to be expected.
6:44 I mean, considering how hard it is to even see with your eyes, right?
6:47 Yeah.
6:47 Because of the environment.
6:48 Like, look at this parking lot.
6:51 The tracking is really responsive,
6:52 but I almost want to say here it's a little bit too
6:55 responsive cuz a bird is not moving at a super steady speed, right?
6:58 It's like every time it flaps its wing, it moves a little bit.
7:01 You could actually see that translating in the camera a little bit, right?
7:05 So, it it tells you how responsive this thing is,
7:08 but it's it's almost too responsive in this case.
7:10 So, maybe that's just like a algorithm
7:12 adjustment where they just like dampen it slightly.
7:14 Have you noticed how much I was trusting the sensors of the Yeah, way too much.
7:19 So, basically, these sensors require almost
7:21 no light for the obstacle avoidance sensors.
7:23 They call them like I think it was
7:25 0.1 lux vision sensors or something like that.
7:28 And I've already taken it on a ride through foresty area,
7:31 which is honestly like probably the hardest type
7:34 of terrain for a drone to track, right?
7:36 Like if we're on a dry lake bed, that's easy.
7:39 But places like this is pretty tough.
7:41 It has what, like four times more information of its surroundings
7:46 with the vision sensors than like I think the Airs 3S even.
7:49 So, it's going to be better at detecting more things.
7:53 I had it just tracking me through some of the sketchiest looking tree branches.
7:57 Like look at that.
7:58 A lot of phantom branches, right?
8:00 But I was just kind of trusting that it would see it.
8:04 That would be devastating to have already crashed this.
8:06 Oh, here we go.
8:07 Here we go.
8:07 G.
8:08 Yeah, I know.
8:09 It's scary to look at this footage.
8:11 I was kind of testing out the active track here to see
8:13 how well it could kind of follow and stay with me.
8:16 I mean, that that that's pretty impressive
8:18 how it kind of navigated there, right?
8:20 But you could see anytime something gets in between me and the drone,
8:23 it has to start searching again.
8:25 In a situation like this, it's not like you could just like have
8:28 it track you and then just forget it's there and just do your thing,
8:30 or else you might realize it got stuck somewhere, right?
8:33 But it's definitely way better at reacquiring you.
8:36 I think that's along the same lines of what we saw
8:38 earlier with the birds where it could just kind of see everything.
8:41 It can refine you pretty easily.
8:43 All right, so on Instagram, I have asked all of you for questions
8:46 and let's see if I can answer any of these.
8:48 Photojuice asks, "How much noise does it make?" Well,
8:52 I'm pretty sure that's what this number here is.
8:54 Is 83 dB.
8:55 So, I think from a technical standpoint,
8:57 it's a it's a tiny bit louder than the previous Mavic 3 Pro, but honestly,
9:01 all of us thought it was a lot quieter,
9:03 and I think it's just because it's just a much deeper tone.
9:06 It's more like a a hum rather than like a buzz.
9:10 Ooh, that felt nice.
9:11 It's heavier, but it's not necessarily louder, I feel.
9:15 Well, bigger props makes lesser noise.
9:17 And the shape of it is different.
9:19 Different.
9:19 A lot different.
9:20 It has more of a pitch to it.
9:21 Now Josh asks, "Does the camera spin 360 or something?" Uh, yeah.
9:26 So, they have something called the Infinity Gimbal on here now.
9:29 Kind of fun, but it is important to know
9:31 that as you roll the camera into different positions,
9:33 there are limitations to how much you can tilt based on how much you roll.
9:37 So, look right here.
9:39 Right there.
9:40 See this green dot right here?
9:41 Now, notice as I roll the camera, that kind of shrinks down.
9:45 So notice that as I'm 90° sideways,
9:48 I really only have a few degrees of tilt angle that I have.
9:52 And then as I go fully upside down, I get my full range back.
9:57 So it does kind of let you know how
10:00 much tilting motion that you have capable to you.
10:03 So as you can see, we are all the way maxed out at minus 400 right now.
10:08 And then I think I could actually just hit this and it'll fully reset me.
10:12 Then that's my other limit.
10:14 40°.
10:15 Sammy, look at this.
10:16 What?
10:18 Oh, it spins this too.
10:20 Oh, it does.
10:21 So, when you want to go spin this, that's pretty 9 by6.
10:25 So, here's vertical right here.
10:27 So, my max tilt down.
10:30 I get about 11° downward and then I could get around the same upward.
10:36 Now, I'm on the wide angle.
10:37 Does it change at all?
10:38 No, it's about the same.
10:39 About 10 to 11°.
10:42 So, there's this mode here,
10:43 which is a 4K vertical mode where it gives me the frame guides,
10:46 but I have full tilt capability all the way down to 90 degrees.
10:51 How much can I go up in this mode?
10:55 Oh, that's pretty good.
10:57 What is that?
10:57 70° upward tilt.
10:59 Roman the Explorer asks, "Dynamic range?
11:01 How does the image look compared to the Mavic 3?" So,
11:04 according to the spec sheet, it says 16 stops of dynamic range for the wide,
11:08 14 stops for the mid, and 13 stops for the tight.
11:12 Molto Leonard says, "Why do they keep using small sensors and fixed
11:16 iris for the zoom cameras?" I got to assume it's because of weight.
11:20 When you go bigger on the sensor and you want to telephoto,
11:22 that's going to get bigger.
11:24 Especially if you want it to still be fast, then it's got to get way bigger.
11:28 So, I don't know.
11:28 I think they're just balancing weight and size.
11:30 That's my guess at least.
11:32 Andy King Photo says, "Will there be vertical video with all the lenses?" Yes,
11:36 absolutely, because when you turn the whole
11:38 gimbal over to the side, it all turns.
11:41 And look at that rotation right there.
11:42 Skimboard man asks, "How much flight time off of one battery?" Uh,
11:46 technically, it says 51 minutes on the spec sheet,
11:49 but no one actually flies in these perfect
11:51 environments and runs the battery down to zero.
11:53 For me personally, I have gotten about roughly 33 minutes is kind of my average.
11:59 before it gets to about 20% that's when I land it.
12:01 And I know that doesn't sound like much when you
12:03 compare it to the spec sheet that says 51 minutes.
12:05 But I am always doing a mix of some slow stable flying
12:08 as well as some sport mode 55 mph and then filming the whole time.
12:12 So I am aggressive on my batteries and I'm
12:16 still getting 33 minutes before even the warning comes up.
12:20 So uh that's honestly really good.
12:21 Manny says ND filters.
12:23 Yeah, I personally don't have ND filters yet.
12:24 So, all this footage that I shot have not had ND filters yet,
12:28 but I believe this just rotates off and you can just slap ND filters on.
12:33 I just am still waiting for those, but that will
12:35 definitely help with making things a lot more cinematic.
12:37 Brad in real life says, "Do all lenses have matching res and log?" So,
12:41 yeah, we already talked about how all of these have log,
12:43 but the uh wide angle on here has uh 6K now 6K 60 or you could go to 4K 120.
12:50 Uh it does crop it a little bit at 4K120.
12:53 Unknown combo asks, "What's the pricing?" In the top, we have the basic combo,
12:57 the Flymore combo, which of course has
12:58 like the extra batteries and extra goodies,
13:00 but this has been the creator combo that we've been testing,
13:03 which has this nice fancy RC2 Pro controller,
13:07 but also there's some differences in the drone, too.
13:10 So, kind of like the previous version where there was
13:12 the one version that had the terabyte built-in and ProRes.
13:15 It's kind of like that where this version has 512 gigs of built-in SSD storage,
13:22 but also a codec which is all I the intra frame codec.
13:27 So, denser file that's better for more professional level stuff.
13:32 But honestly, uh a lot of what I shot was uh H.265 just
13:36 because I think that's what a majority of people are going to get.
13:39 And Ceny asks, is ProRes not going to be a thing anymore?
13:43 So, yeah, no more ProRes in the drone,
13:45 which uh I think some people may be sad about.
13:49 But I do know that the uh Complex Aerial
13:51 guys who do a lot of very high-end professional work,
13:54 uh Sammy and Josh, they were a bit disappointed.
13:56 One biggest thing is kind of think cuz it doesn't
13:59 have ProRes and a lot of people like the ProRes feature.
14:01 Yeah, they might feel like, oh, no ProRes, no money.
14:05 But they were very happy when they saw the full
14:07 size HDMI coming out of the bottom of this controller.
14:10 Josh, it's full HDMI out.
14:11 Really?
14:12 Not like that little micro one again.
14:14 That's actually that's incredible.
14:15 Do you guys ever use active track or no?
14:17 No, just mainly just because it would come out of ProRes.
14:20 So, and then you So, that's the thing.
14:22 So, if can you use all those features like active track
14:25 and like orbiting and all that and still get the same quality.
14:29 Well, let's see.
14:29 You're in all eye right now, right?
14:30 So, you're in the high quality mode.
14:32 Yeah.
14:32 Focus track enabled.
14:33 Okay.
14:33 So, you know how how good that's going to be?
14:35 You can still shoot high quality and cheat some shots.
14:39 In the Mavic 3, you guys never used any of the smart
14:41 features because because you lose the quality of ProRes and everything.
14:44 Yeah, exactly.
14:45 Of course, there's spotlight and active track.
14:47 So, spotlight is available on all three cameras
14:50 and basically just frames the camera for you.
14:52 So, all you have to really worry about is maneuvering the drone, right?
14:55 But in spotlight mode,
14:56 the drone will not actually move without you giving it some input.
15:00 Right now, there's active track where the drone will
15:03 actually fly itself and chase you around the block.
15:06 That feature is available on the wide and the mid,
15:09 but it is not available on the tightest lens.
15:12 I do remember being pretty impressed
15:14 with the minimum focus distance of that super tight.
15:17 We also get a few improvements in speed.
15:19 Raced Frank and his Mavic 3 Pro and we've always
15:22 won in normal mode where all the sensors are turned on.
15:25 I was able to hit 40 mph in a wide open space.
15:30 So, better sensors means that they can
15:32 work even when the drone is flying faster.
15:35 and even flying backwards.
15:36 I was able to hit 40 mph.
15:38 And in sport mode, of course, a lot of it has to do with wind,
15:41 but I was able to hit like 55 and also how fast the batteries charged.
15:45 So, you can fully charge one battery from zero in.
15:48 It says 43 minutes and all three in 90 minutes.
15:51 But I was also happy to see that I can just plug like my laptop
15:55 charger straight into the USBC and I was
15:59 able to fully charge a battery that way.
16:01 So, if you're just trying to pack ultra light.
16:03 All right, so now it is time for my favorite
16:05 and least favorite thing about the Mavic 4 Pro.
16:07 It's honestly hard to kind of just pick one
16:08 thing because there's so many improvements with the camera,
16:10 with the aircraft, the workflow, everything.
16:12 But if I could only choose one thing, I would say I really loved using
16:16 the smart tracking feature with the ultra tight lens.
16:20 It just kind of felt like cheating on how easy it
16:22 was to make something look really epic with that super compression,
16:25 with that super tight lens.
16:26 I know I'm going to like the quality of the footage.
16:29 you know, it's going to be in DLOG and I'm also less
16:32 stressed about crashing because of the upgraded
16:34 obstacle avoidance sensors in all directions.
16:36 It's effortless and the footage just looks so good.
16:39 Now, my least favorite feature with the Mavic 4 Pro is there's still not
16:44 a great way to record good quality audio and sync it up with the drone.
16:50 And even as something as simple as time
16:52 code built in would be such tremendous help.
16:57 and even their little action 5 Pro and the Pocket
17:00 3 that has a basic form of time code.
17:03 Now, there is actually a fun feature now where there is a microphone built
17:07 into the controller and that basically will send
17:10 a little audio file to the drone itself.
17:13 But, uh the downside of it is it sounds like this.
17:15 I guess it's kind of cool that I can like narrate my flights.
17:18 Yeah, something different.
17:19 Something more options.
17:20 Yeah, there is also a way to pair the DJI
17:23 Bluetooth mic onto the controller and then transmit the audio there.
17:26 But, uh, here's how that sounds.
17:27 I basically paired the DJI mic into the controller,
17:30 which will then transmit the audio files to the drone.
17:34 Uh, kind of cool, huh?
17:36 But here's the downside.
17:37 The sound quality is kind of like meh.
17:39 But at least on the bright side,
17:40 I could look at the audio recorded on the controller as kind of reference audio,

18:05 The DLOG is saves the day.
18:08 The aircraft just flies better.
18:10 The workflow, man.
18:11 Oh, I love just how fast I can just boot it up and just go this leg.
18:17 Turns out it's just this one leg that I have to unfold for it to boot up.
18:21 So, this is the secret leg to power on.

18:26 It takes about 8 seconds for this to power off.
18:29 So that's the amount of time I have left
18:31 where you can like kind of click on things.
18:33 Uh links in description and stuff like that.
18:35 And uh
