The Kulture Study: CORTIS 'REDRED' MV + Conceptual Performance Film
Form of Therapy
0:00 Hey everyone, welcome back to Formother Therapy.
0:02 My name is Chalk PD and today on the culture study,
0:07 I am going to be checking out two videos for Cortis because it's Cortis.
0:12 Uh this is Red Red.
0:14 I'm going to be checking out the official music video
0:17 as well as their conceptual performance film because uh well,
0:23 you guys told me to.
0:25 Uh y'all hyped it up quite a bit.
0:27 Um, I have been getting a lot of messages, even in my personal life, of saying,
0:32 "I can't wait to see your reaction to Cortis' Red Red." Now,
0:36 I got to admit, the bar is high.
0:39 The bar is ridiculously high for Cortis.
0:42 Cortis was not one of my favorite debuts of last year.
0:45 No, no, no.
0:46 Cortis was one of my favorite just musical artists of all time last year.
0:52 Cortis' Color Outside the Lines album was among
0:56 my top three most listened to of all year.
1:01 Like Jesus Lord, I am so obsessed with that album.
1:07 And so I cannot wait.
1:09 I I have been in great expectance of whatever they do next.
1:15 Um before I get into Red Ed, uh let me just do a quick plug.
1:20 If you're a Cortis fan and you want to see some of my Cortis reactions,
1:24 you can head on over to my Patreon over on my Patreon.
1:27 Uh not only did I react to Cortis' uh debut live stages,
1:32 uh as well as, you know,
1:33 I checked out I loved all of Cordis' award show performances,
1:38 I reacted to most all of the award show performances from 2025, 2026 season.
1:44 So, you can check that out as well as their documentary for What You Want.
1:49 and I'm starting to check out their vlogs as well.
1:52 So, I'm going to be checking out more
1:54 Cortis vlogs in May in celebration of Red Red.
1:58 So, head on by.
2:00 Of course, you don't have to support
2:02 the channel monetarily if you don't want to.
2:04 It's just a great way to support the channel in a bonus way.
2:07 Let's get into the music video for Red Red by Cortis.
2:14 All right.
2:26 Interesting.
2:37 You going get a back.
2:56 Oh my god.
3:16 These lyrics don't My team call me a freak
3:33 she got each other like a step like yeah tell me Ru down.
4:21 Turn it up.
4:22 Oh my god.
4:35 What the[ __] like me.
5:05 Oh my god.
5:08 Oh my god.
5:33 Damn, that bass is crazy.
5:36 Like that electronic beat is crazy, but then the bass coming in is even crazier.
5:42 They're so stupid.
5:46 Oh my god, guys.
5:52 As someone who loved their debut and as someone whose favorite song,
5:57 frankly, on that entire album was Fashion,
6:01 this is the greatest followup there could have ever been for Cortis,
6:06 for my taste specifically.
6:09 I don't know about anybody else.
6:10 I hope everyone else loved it too because I
6:12 mean from the reactions again people in my personal
6:15 life are texting me be like I can't wait to see your reaction to Red Red.
6:18 Multiple people I have to assume people are
6:22 loving this because what do people love about Cortis?
6:24 So Cortis had such a spectacular reception to their debut last year.
6:29 Why?
6:30 Because people more and more and I I I hope the K-pop industry is taking notes.
6:37 people more and more are loving groups that feel less manufactured
6:42 and are stripping away the veil of what idol culture is.
6:49 It's like we want the structure, we want the training,
6:54 we want the efficiency of what K-pop idol culture has of that machine,
6:59 but all the like super politeness,
7:03 all the super cleanedupness, the the the fakeness, you know,
7:08 we're kind of saying like I I think
7:10 especially with the younger generation getting more into it,
7:13 but also the older generation who's been in it for a while,
7:16 we're like, "Hey, we're kind of getting tired of the sheen.
7:20 We're kind of getting tired of the gloss.
7:22 It's okay to show us the raw[ __] It's okay to show us the the messy,
7:28 dirty[ __] It's okay to show us the dumb[ __] And listen,
7:33 Cortis, and I say this to someone who
7:36 watched their documentary and has been watching their vlogs,
7:40 I say this with so much affection.
7:42 Please do not take offense to this when
7:44 I say these dudes are both brilliant and dumb.
7:48 And I mean dumb in the way of like they are dumb young 20some boys, right?
7:54 Like it reminds me of my youth when I was
7:58 a little bit reckless when I threw caution to the wind.
8:01 But they're doing that on a musical level.
8:03 They're doing that on an industry level and it's working because
8:07 also Martin is a genius and also all of them are brilliant.
8:11 And so what they're bringing to the table is
8:14 such a freshness that frankly you can't you can't replicate.
8:18 And that's why people love them.
8:22 Cortis is both nostalgic and yet innovative and raw
8:26 and refreshing and bold at the same time.
8:30 And I personally really loved Fashion.
8:34 I I love that song.
8:36 Um, one, the lyrics are so insanely witty and clever,
8:41 and the hook is crazy, and the beat is right up my alley.
8:45 I love electronic synth beats.
8:48 So, when we say electronic synth beats, oh my god, Red Red is amazing.
8:54 Now, when we talk about witty beats or or sorry, witty lyrics, I mean,
9:00 not only are the lyrics for Red Red witty, they're also a little dub.
9:05 Uh, I love like they're talking about what is red,
9:09 you know, what's what ain't cool, right?
9:12 Tell me what's red.
9:13 Uh, I love how they I love that like call to action too in the song.
9:16 It's like tell me what's red and then they list off a bunch of things.
9:19 That's red.
9:20 That's red.
9:21 That's red.
9:21 And then they go into what's green and green.
9:23 But I love the dumb like even the dumb lyrics of like covering your butt.
9:29 Like that's so[ __] funny.
9:32 Oh my gosh.
9:34 it.
9:34 This is such a This is such a hilarious hilarious song.
9:38 And at the same time, it's such a cool song.
9:41 And it it really just goes to show that you can be
9:45 you can be both kind of dumb and cool at the same time.
9:49 And my gosh, I love them.
9:53 They're so phenomenal.
9:55 This beat is so phenomenal.
9:57 This song is fantastic.
9:58 I can't wait to watch the conceptual film.
10:00 But I just want to say I loved the rowdiness of this video.
10:04 I love just like both the dumb dancing and them apparently making
10:10 there's like a mild story going on of like making Kono's life hell.
10:14 Like Kono it looks like Kono works at like this um mom and pop
10:20 shop type restaurant and they're just making
10:22 it they're just like causing such a ruckus.
10:25 It's hilarious.
10:27 Oh my goodness.
10:30 All right, let's go ahead and check out the conceptual film.
10:41 Oh, no way.
10:49 Oh.
10:55 God, this is so well orchestrated.
11:13 Oh, so brilliant.
11:14 That was such a great great edit.
11:18 Wow.
11:28 Dude, the way they're dancing looks so carefree and foolish,
11:33 but it's so impressive at the same time.
11:42 What the[ __] Oh my god, I love this so much.
11:58 Holy[ __] the vibes are on.
12:05 That's real.
12:07 That's a we got a show.
12:15 You got to know all down your whole life.
12:18 She know green.
12:39 I told her turn me shard like a studio like That's Oh my god.
13:24 Oh my god.
13:30 I don't think I can truly express truly
13:34 the amount of joy that this group brings me.
13:38 Like it's absolute genuine unfettered joy and glee.
13:44 Like they make me so[ __] happy.
13:48 Like like their music is so fun.
13:51 Their music is so free and it's so expressive and the beat is dope.
13:56 It's not just like, you know, it's like a parody song or anything.
14:00 It's fun, but it just h and it's I don't even think it it's like they're funny,
14:05 but their music isn't funny.
14:07 Their music is witty.
14:08 Their music is charming.
14:10 And wow, when you have an incredible conceptual film like
14:14 this that I think it's even better than the music video.
14:18 You frankly didn't even need the music video.
14:21 the I mean I think it's good to have both but that conceptual film is so smart.
14:28 It's so it's just as witty as the song and their team
14:35 that works with them and allows this level of creative
14:38 freedom really really speaks to just why Cortis is killing it
14:46 and why Cortis is getting the attention that they rightfully deserve.
14:51 this music video.
14:52 I I want to give it up to first off whoever was storyboarding and shot planning.
14:58 So, this seems pretty simple in theory.
15:02 It's simple more so in in the base idea.
15:08 Let's just have the performance all over the place and stitch it together.
15:11 But the thing is, there's something there's
15:14 something to be said about narrative direction.
15:16 Even within shot design,
15:18 you can't just have them all over and then stitch it together.
15:21 The camera is almost following them throughout
15:24 this mall and there's a sort of psychology
15:27 to we're starting here to here to here to here to here to here.
15:30 So, the way that they're stitching all the shots together,
15:33 but the way that the location scout then had to go
15:36 to this area and mall and decide where like where the begin,
15:41 okay, like during this portion of the song,
15:42 we're starting here and then it's going to go
15:44 to this part of the mall and then it's going to go
15:45 to that part of the mall and then it's going to go
15:47 to this part down to here and then back up to here.
15:50 that requires such good directing and I just really want to give
15:56 it up to uh I mean I I've been complimenting Cortis
15:59 this entire time but I really want to give it up
16:01 to their team as well um for really following through on that.
16:06 It just it makes it it's why it's brilliant.
16:11 It's not just like a a fun video.
16:13 It's brilliant because they had a fun idea
16:17 and the video team really brought their agame
16:20 in terms of making sure that the execution
16:22 was done at the highest level possible.
16:24 Um, the editing is smart.
16:28 They they hide a lot of the whip
16:30 transitions really really well uh so that it makes
16:34 some of the moments seem uh a lot more
16:37 fun and clever when it reveals where they are.
16:41 It's so so so brilliantly done.
16:46 Oh my gosh.
16:47 I I cannot believe it.
16:49 I cannot believe in my opinion that Cortis not
16:54 only lived up to their hype, they topped it.
16:58 They did.
16:59 They in my opinion they totally topped uh the conceptual film for what
17:03 they had for Go and they totally topped the the fun of fashion.
17:10 And I think they were brave enough to bring a little bit
17:13 more of their personalities because from what I've seen in in their vlogs,
17:19 they're a little foolish and they were willing
17:22 to bring that into their music and aesthetic this time.
17:28 Especially I I really want to compliment um for me my favorite was James.
17:33 James' dancing was so the perfect blend of that shit's so funny,
17:40 but like the his angles and what he's doing is so funny,
17:44 but I know that that requires also so much
17:47 skill and control to make it look that funny.
17:50 I would not be able to do that level of dancing.
17:54 So, I just want to I I I just want
17:56 to give a little extra praise to James as well.
17:58 That was incredible.
18:00 Um, that's going to be it for my reaction to Cortis' Red Red.
18:04 Holy moly, what an incredible song and what an incredible video.
18:09 U, of course, I love the conceptual film a little bit more than
18:12 the music video just because I think in terms of like film making,
18:15 it's just so much more witty and interesting.
18:19 But I'd love to hear your thoughts.
18:21 What do you guys think about Cortis' uh comeback single?
18:24 Uh, did it live up to the hype?
18:27 Did it live up to the hype of their debut?
18:30 And uh you know, if you were perhaps someone who was lukewarm on the debut,
18:35 what do you think of this comeback?
18:37 Uh let me know what what you thought of the video.
18:40 And that's going to be it for me.
18:42 As I mentioned, if you enjoyed this, you want
18:44 to see my listening party for Color Outside the Lines
