0:00 Hey everyone, welcome back to Real Easy Talks, your daily English practice.

0:06 I'm Anna

0:07 and I'm Tom.

0:08 We're so happy you're here with us today.

0:10 If you're new, subscribe so you don't miss our daily episodes.

0:14 So Tom, how are you feeling today?

0:17 Like really feeling.

0:19 [sighs and gasps]

0:20 Honestly, Anna, I'm a little tired.

0:23 I stayed up late working on a design project.

0:26 My client kept asking for changes.

0:29 Oh no.

0:30 They kept asking for changes.

0:33 Yeah.

0:33 They kept saying, "Can you try this?

0:36 Can you try that?" And I kept working until midnight.

0:40 My eyes were burning.

0:42 My back was aching.

0:43 But I kept going.

0:45 [laughter and gasps]

0:46 Wait, Tom, did you notice what you just said?

0:50 What do you mean?

0:51 You used the word keep like four or five times without even thinking about it.

0:56 Uh, did I?

0:58 Let me think.

0:59 They kept asking.

1:01 I kept working.

1:03 I kept going.

1:06 Yes.

1:06 And that's exactly what we're talking about today.

1:09 Oh, wow.

1:10 That's perfect.

1:11 So, today we're talking about keep.

1:14 Exactly.

1:15 Keep.

1:16 Ke e p.

1:17 Four letters but so many uses.

1:20 It's one of those words that English speakers use all the time,

1:24 everywhere, in almost every situation.

1:27 That's so true.

1:29 I hear keep everywhere.

1:31 Keep going.

1:32 Keep in touch.

1:33 Keep it up.

1:34 Keep calm.

1:36 Yes.

1:36 And the funny thing is, most English learners know this word,

1:40 but they don't know how to use it naturally.

1:43 They might say continue or maintain instead, which is correct,

1:47 but it doesn't sound like real everyday English.

1:51 So today, we're going to help our listeners

1:54 really understand this word and use it confidently

1:58 and use it like native speakers do in real conversations in daily life,

2:03 at work, at home, with friends.

2:06 All right, let's do this.

2:07 Let's learn how to use keep in everyday English.

2:11 So Tom, before we go deeper, let me ask you something.

2:15 What do you think keep really means?

2:18 If you had to explain it to someone, what would you say?

2:22 Um, I guess to have something or to continue or maybe to not let go.

2:30 That's a great start.

2:32 And you're actually touching on all the main meanings.

2:35 Keep has several meanings, but don't worry, it's simpler than it sounds.

2:39 Once you understand the pattern, it becomes very easy.

2:43 Okay, I'm ready.

2:44 Break it down for me, teacher Anna.

2:47 [laughter] All right.

2:49 At the most basic level, keep usually means three things.

2:54 One, continue doing something.

2:56 Two, stay in a certain state.

2:59 Three, hold on to something.

3:02 Continue, stay the same, hold on to something.

3:06 Three meanings.

3:07 I can remember that.

3:08 Good.

3:09 And here's the key.

3:10 The meaning depends on what comes after keep.

3:14 If it's a verb with ing, it means continue.

3:17 If it's an adjective, it means stay.

3:20 If it's a noun, it usually means hold on to.

3:23 Oh, that's helpful.

3:25 So, the grammar tells you the meaning.

3:28 Exactly.

3:28 Now, let's start with the first one, continue.

3:32 Okay.

3:32 Continue.

3:33 Like keep doing something.

3:36 Yes.

3:36 When you say keep plus a verb with ing,

3:39 it means to continue doing that action over and over again and again.

3:44 For example, keep working, keep trying, keep learning, keep practicing.

3:51 Oh, like when my client kept asking for changes,

3:54 they continued asking again and again.

3:58 Perfect example.

3:59 And this is probably the most common way we use keep.

4:03 So if I say, I keep forgetting my keys, it means I forget them again and again.

4:10 Yes, you continue forgetting.

4:12 It happens repeatedly.

4:14 It's a pattern.

4:16 [laughter] That's me.

4:17 I keep losing things.

4:19 My phone, my wallet, my keys, my headphones.

4:23 [laughter]

4:24 That's very relatable.

4:25 And notice how natural that sounds.

4:28 I keep losing things.

4:30 Much better than I repeatedly lose things or I continue to lose things.

4:36 Yeah.

4:36 Repeatedly sounds like a textbook.

4:38 Keep sounds like a real person talking.

4:42 Exactly.

4:42 Keep sounds like real life and that's what we want.

4:46 Okay, let me try some more examples.

4:49 My neighbor keeps playing loud music at night.

4:53 Perfect.

4:53 It happens again and again every night.

4:56 Loud music.

4:58 Uh, the baby keeps crying.

5:01 Yes.

5:01 The baby cries, stops, then cries again, continues crying.

5:07 I keep thinking about that movie we watched.

5:10 Great.

5:11 The thoughts come back again and again.

5:13 You can't stop thinking about it.

5:15 This is fun.

5:16 I'm starting to feel it.

5:18 The pattern is clicking in my brain.

5:20 That's the best feeling when something clicks.

5:23 Okay, let's move to the second meaning.

5:26 Okay, the second meaning stay in a certain state, right?

5:31 The second meaning is stay the same or remain in a condition.

5:36 Here we use keep plus an adjective.

5:39 Keep calm.

5:40 Keep warm, keep quiet, keep safe.

5:43 Oh, like keep calm and carry on.

5:47 Yes, that's a very famous phrase from Britain.

5:50 It means stay calm, don't panic, don't change your emotion, just keep going.

5:56 I love that phrase.

5:57 I have it on a mug and a t-shirt and a poster.

6:01 [laughter] You really love it.

6:04 I do.

6:05 It helps me when work gets stressful.

6:07 Keep calm, Tom.

6:08 Keep calm.

6:10 That's a great use.

6:11 And notice calm is an adjective.

6:14 So keep calm means stay in that calm state.

6:18 So keep warm means stay warm.

6:22 Don't get cold.

6:24 Exactly.

6:24 If it's cold outside, I might say to my students, "Put on a jacket.

6:28 Keep warm." Or if someone is sick, you might say, "Rest a lot and keep warm."

6:35 And keep quiet means stay quiet.

6:38 Don't make noise.

6:40 Perfect.

6:40 Like in a library, the sign says keep quiet.

6:44 Stay in that quiet state.

6:46 What about keep still?

6:48 I heard that before.

6:49 My grandma used to say it.

6:52 Great question.

6:53 Keep still means don't move.

6:55 Stay in one place.

6:57 Don't fidget.

6:58 Like when a doctor says keep still, I need to check your heartbeat.

7:02 Or when a photographer says keep still, I'm taking the picture.

7:07 [laughter] Or when Lily tries to take a photo of me, she says, "Tom, keep still.

7:12 Stop moving." And I can never do it.

7:15 I always blink or make a weird face.

7:18 [laughter] That's so funny.

7:20 Photos are hard when you can't keep still.

7:23 What about keep safe?

7:25 Oh, that's a lovely one.

7:27 Keep safe means stay safe, be careful, don't get hurt.

7:32 You might say it when someone is going on a troop.

7:34 Have fun and keep safe.

7:36 That's nice.

7:37 It shows you care about the person.

7:40 Exactly.

7:40 It's warm and caring.

7:43 Okay, I'm getting this.

7:44 Keep plus adjective means stay in that state, maintain that condition.

7:50 Perfect understanding.

7:52 And here's a tip for learners.

7:54 Think of keep as a way to hold on to a condition.

7:57 You want to maintain it.

7:59 You don't want it to change.

8:00 You're protecting that state.

8:03 Yes, that's a beautiful way to say it.

8:06 You're guarding, you're calm, your warmth, you're quiet.

8:09 All right.

8:10 What's the third meaning?

8:11 The third meaning is hold on to something or not give away.

8:16 This is more about possession.

8:18 You keep something.

8:19 You don't give it away.

8:20 You don't throw it away.

8:22 You don't lose it.

8:24 Like keep the change.

8:26 Perfect example.

8:27 When you pay for something, let's say a coffee costs $4 and you give them $5,

8:33 you can say, "Keep the change." You're telling

8:36 the person to hold on to the extra money.

8:38 It's a small tip.

8:40 Oh, I love saying that.

8:41 It makes me feel generous, even if it's just $1.

8:45 [laughter] It does feel good.

8:47 And we also say keep a secret.

8:50 Ah, yes.

8:51 Can you keep a secret?

8:53 That means don't tell anyone, right?

8:56 Exactly.

8:56 You hold on to the secret.

8:58 You don't let it go.

8:59 You don't share it with others.

9:01 It stays with you.

9:03 I'm good at keeping secrets.

9:04 Lily tells me things and I never tell anyone.

9:07 But my friend Jake, he can't keep a secret.

9:10 He tells everyone everything.

9:13 [laughter] Some people are like that.

9:16 They can't keep anything to themselves.

9:19 What about keep your word?

9:21 I've heard that expression, too.

9:23 Great one.

9:24 Keep your word means to do what you promised.

9:27 If you said you would help me move apartments on Saturday

9:30 and you actually show up and help, you kept your word.

9:34 So, it's like holding on to your promise, not breaking it.

9:38 Exactly.

9:39 You don't break it, you keep it.

9:41 You honor it.

9:42 It shows you're trustworthy.

9:44 What about keep your promise?

9:46 Is that the same?

9:48 Yes.

9:48 Very similar.

9:49 Keep your promise and keep your word mean the same thing.

9:53 do what you said you would do.

9:55 I always try to keep my promises.

9:57 If I say I'll do something, I do it.

10:01 That's a good quality.

10:02 People trust you because you keep your word.

10:05 I like this third meaning.

10:06 Keep is like a container word.

10:08 You put things in it and hold them there.

10:11 Secrets, promises, change.

10:15 [laughter] That's such a creative way to think about it.

10:17 A container word.

10:19 I love that.

10:20 Hey, I'm a designer.

10:22 I think in visuals everything is shapes and containers to me

10:26 and that's why your examples are always so helpful for learners.

10:30 Okay.

10:31 So we have three main meanings continue, stay the same and hold on to but Anna,

10:38 I know there are so many phrases with keep, so many expressions.

10:42 Can we go through some of the most common ones?

10:46 Absolutely.

10:46 Let's talk about the most common keep phrases you'll hear every day.

10:51 These are super useful.

10:52 Once you know them, you'll hear them everywhere.

10:56 I'm ready.

10:57 Hit me with them.

10:58 First one, keep going.

11:00 Oh, I love this one.

11:02 It's so encouraging, so motivating.

11:05 Yes, keep going means don't stop.

11:08 Continue moving forward.

11:09 Don't give up.

11:11 When something is hard, when you want to quit, we say keep going.

11:15 Mike, when I'm at the gym and I want to stop running on the treadmill,

11:19 Lily says, "Keep going, Tom.

11:21 You're almost there.

11:22 Just two more minutes." Exactly.

11:25 It's a phrase of encouragement.

11:27 You're struggling, but someone tells you to continue and you find strength.

11:32 And you can use it for yourself, too, right?

11:35 Absolutely.

11:36 When work is tough, when life is difficult, you tell yourself, "Keep going.

11:40 You've got this.

11:41 Don't stop." Now,

11:43 that's powerful.

11:44 Keep going.

11:46 I need to say that to myself more often,

11:48 especially at midnight when I'm still working on designs.

11:52 We all need that reminder sometimes.

11:54 Okay, next phrase.

11:56 Keep in touch.

11:57 This one I use all the time.

11:59 It's so important.

12:00 What does it mean to you?

12:03 Um, like stay connected, keep communicating with someone,

12:07 don't disappear from their life.

12:10 Perfect.

12:10 When you say keep in touch, you're asking someone to continue contacting you

12:16 even if you don't see each other often, even if you live far apart.

12:20 Like when a friend moves to another city,

12:22 you hug them at the airport and say, "Hey, let's keep in touch." Okay.

12:27 Exactly.

12:27 It means the friendship continues.

12:29 Distance doesn't end it.

12:31 You'll still call, text, video chat.

12:35 Yeah.

12:35 And honestly, it feels good knowing that someone

12:38 wants to keep in touch with you.

12:40 It means they value you.

12:42 It really does.

12:43 Connection is so important.

12:45 Okay, next phrase.

12:47 Keep up with.

12:48 Oh, this one is tricky.

12:50 I'm not always sure how to use it.

12:52 What does it mean exactly?

12:54 Keep up with means to stay at the same level or pace as something or someone.

12:59 To not fall behind.

13:01 For example, I can't keep up with all the new technology.

13:05 That's literally me.

13:07 My phone updates every week and I can't keep up.

13:10 New features, new buttons, new settings.

13:13 It's exhausting.

13:15 Exactly.

13:16 Things are moving fast.

13:17 Technology is changing and you're trying to stay

13:21 at the same speed, but it's hard.

13:23 What about keep up with the news?

13:26 Same idea.

13:27 It means to stay informed about current events.

13:30 to know what's happening in the world.

13:32 I try to keep up with the news, but there's so much happening every day.

13:38 Yeah, that's overwhelming.

13:39 There's news about politics, technology, sports, entertainment.

13:44 My brain feels like a browser with 47 tabs

13:47 open when I try to keep up with everything.

13:50 [laughter]

13:51 That's such a vivid image.

13:53 47 tabs open.

13:55 I can picture it perfectly.

13:57 It's real, Anna.

13:58 It's very real.

13:59 Sometimes I just close all the tabs and take a nap.

14:03 That's called self-care.

14:05 I keep up with self-care very well.

14:08 Good for you.

14:09 Okay, next one.

14:11 Keep an eye on.

14:12 Ooh, I like this one.

14:14 It sounds a bit mysterious, like a spy movie.

14:18 [laughter] It's not that mysterious.

14:20 Keep an eye on simply means to watch something or someone carefully,

14:24 to pay attention, to monitor.

14:27 Like keep your bag when you're in a crowded place.

14:31 Exactly.

14:31 You're watching it carefully.

14:33 You're making sure nothing bad happens.

14:35 You're alert.

14:37 Or keep an eye on the oven when you're cooking.

14:39 Make sure the food doesn't burn.

14:41 Yes, that's a perfect example.

14:43 You're monitoring it, checking it regularly.

14:46 My mom always says that.

14:48 Tom, keep an eye on the pasta.

14:50 Don't let it overcook.

14:52 [laughter] Moms always know the important things.

14:57 I need to keep an eye on my coffee, too.

14:59 It gets cold so fast when I'm working.

15:03 That's very relatable.

15:04 Cold coffee is sad coffee.

15:07 Okay, one more phrase.

15:09 What about keep it up?

15:11 Ah, this is another encouragement phrase.

15:14 Keep it up means you're doing great.

15:17 continue what you're doing.

15:19 Don't change anything.

15:21 Oh, nice.

15:22 Like when my boss sees my design and says, "Good job on this presentation, Tom.

15:27 Really creative.

15:28 Keep it up." Exactly.

15:30 It's praise plus encouragement combined.

15:33 You did something well.

15:35 So, don't stop.

15:36 Continue at this level.

15:38 I love hearing that.

15:39 Keep it up.

15:40 It feels so supportive, like someone believes in you.

15:44 It is.

15:44 And you can use it for anyone.

15:46 friends, family, co-workers, even yourself.

15:50 When you're making progress, celebrate it.

15:53 Say, "Keep it up."

15:55 I'm going to use that more.

15:57 Look in the mirror every morning and say, "Keep it up, Tom.

16:00 You're doing great."

16:03 Yes, self- encouragement is important.

16:05 We don't do it enough.

16:07 Okay, Anna, wait.

16:08 I just realized something.

16:10 You used another phrase earlier.

16:12 You said something about keeping track of.

16:15 Oh, good memory.

16:17 Yes, keep track of is another very useful phrase.

16:22 What does it mean?

16:24 Keep track of means to monitor or record something.

16:27 To know where things are or how things are going,

16:30 like keeping track of your expenses.

16:33 You write down what you spent.

16:35 Oh, I do that.

16:37 Well, I try to.

16:38 Lily helps me keep track of our budget.

16:40 She's much better at it than me.

16:42 That's smart.

16:43 And you can keep track of time,

16:45 keep track of your progress, keep track of your goals.

16:50 I should keep track of how many times I say keep in this episode.

16:55 We'd probably lose count.

16:57 I'm keeping track of everything today.

16:59 My brain is full of keep.

17:02 That's exactly what we want.

17:04 When a word fills your brain, it becomes part of you.

17:08 This feels good.

17:09 I'm starting to feel it in my body,

17:11 you know, like something clicked, like a light turned on.

17:15 That's the best feeling in language learning

17:18 when it stops being information and becomes intuition.

17:22 All right, I think we should do a quick review for our listeners.

17:26 Put it all together.

17:27 What do you think?

17:28 Great idea.

17:29 Let's go through the main points one more time slowly and clearly.

17:34 Okay, so keep has three main meanings.

17:38 Number one, continue doing something.

17:41 Keep plus verb ing.

17:43 I keep working.

17:44 She keeps talking.

17:46 They keep trying.

17:47 We keep learning.

17:49 Number two, stay in a certain state.

17:52 Keep plus adjective.

17:54 Keep calm, keep warm, keep quiet, keep still, keep safe.

18:00 Number three, hold on to something.

18:03 Keep plus noun.

18:04 Keep a secret.

18:06 Keep your change.

18:07 Keep your word.

18:08 Keep your promise.

18:10 And then we have all those amazing everyday phrases.

18:14 Keep going.

18:15 Continue.

18:16 Don't stop.

18:17 Don't give up.

18:19 Keep in touch.

18:20 Stay connected with someone.

18:21 Maintain the relationship.

18:24 Keep up with.

18:25 Stay at the same pace or level.

18:27 Don't fall behind.

18:29 Keep an eye on.

18:30 Watch carefully.

18:31 Monitor.

18:32 Pay attention.

18:33 Keep it up.

18:34 You're doing great.

18:36 continue at this level.

18:38 Keep track of, monitor, or record something.

18:41 Know where things stand.

18:43 Perfect summary.

18:44 You're really keeping up today, Tom.

18:47 [laughter]

18:47 I'm trying my best.

18:49 I'm keeping it together.

18:51 That's another one.

18:52 Keep it together means stay calm.

18:54 Don't fall apart emotionally.

18:58 See, keep is everywhere.

19:00 We can't escape it.

19:02 And that's exactly why it's so important to learn.

19:05 Okay, now I have a question for our listeners.

19:08 Are you ready?

19:10 Yes.

19:10 Let's hear it.

19:11 Tom, what do you want to keep doing in 2026?

19:15 Think about it.

19:16 Maybe you want to keep learning English.

19:19 Maybe you want to keep exercising.

19:21 Maybe you want to keep reading books.

19:23 Maybe you want to keep in touch with old friends.

19:26 Great question.

19:27 Tell us in the comments.

19:29 We love reading your answers.

19:31 We read every single one.

19:33 And remember, whatever you're doing, keep going.

19:36 Keep it up.

19:37 You're making progress.

19:39 Even when you can't see it, you're getting better.

19:42 Even when it's hard, keep trying.

19:44 That's how you improve.

19:46 Small steps every day.

19:48 All right, that was a great talk about keep.

19:51 We covered so much today.

19:53 Three meanings, six phrases, and lots of real examples from real life.
