1:32 All right, here we go.
1:32 Overdrive off and running.

1:36 Your home smart speaker up on TSN 4 up on YouTube live.
1:40 Brian Hayes, the OD dog, Jeff O'Neal, Jamie Noodles, McClennon.
1:45 What's
1:45 going on today?
1:46 How we feeling this afternoon?
1:49 Nothing to say.
1:50 Work harder.
1:51 That's not the motto.
1:52 That's not what it was.
1:54 No one cares.
1:55 Work harder.
1:57 I
1:57 think that's the Barry Colts motto.
1:59 Shout out to the Colts.
2:00 Big win last night.
2:02 That's not the story line today, though.
2:03 That's the thing.
2:04 It's It should be.
2:05 We're going to get an explanation later on.
2:08 We're going to get an explanation.
2:09 Think so.
2:10 We're doing journalism on this show.
2:12 Is that your plan?
2:13 We are going to talk to the head coach of the Barry
2:14 Colts later today and just see what he has to say.
2:17 There might be an explanation for it cuz he seems like a great coach.
2:21 I've seen the videos of him this year.
2:23 Seems like a solid, very inspiring guy.
2:25 Young guy, right?
2:26 Young guy.
2:27 And dude, what a comeback.
2:28 Down 3-1 to the wagon Brford Bulldogs.
2:32 And they came back without their best player, Bodw.
2:36 World junior star.
2:37 Yeah.
2:37 And they won the series.
2:38 He's a Utah pick, I believe.
2:40 But then the focus should be on them winning and not their presser.
2:43 Not the press conference afterwards, which if you haven't seen it,
2:46 we will play it a little bit later on.
2:48 A snippet of it.
2:49 It was just a little It was awkward.
2:51 It was completely unnecessary.
2:53 The coach should have known better.
2:55 I blame that.
2:57 Or I don't blame the the captain who got kind of dragged out there.
3:00 You just want context for it, that's all.
3:02 Because there might be I was thinking, okay, it's got to be an inside joke.
3:05 It's got to be something.
3:06 That's what I thought, too.
3:07 I thought it was fake or
3:08 maybe it was like I thought it was like some kind of team motto and they
3:11 were pulling a Marshon Lynch and I'm not
3:12 just here cuz I don't want to get fined.
3:14 I know, but it's the Ontario Hockey League.
3:16 They won the tarp off and like the media is just local media
3:20 that loves the team and is there just trying to get a little tire pump.
3:24 Let's just hear a little snippet.
3:25 You want to hear a snippet of what
3:26 happened after Barry beat the Brford Bulldogs last night?
3:30 Go ahead, play it.
3:32 Words probably escape you after that one.
3:34 Maybe you can try your best.
3:36 Uh, no one cares, work harder.
3:38 Okay, Sean, big moment for you, a goal tonight.
3:41 Um, hostile environment.
3:43 What can you say about the way your goalender played in that one?
3:45 Uh, no one cares, work harder.
3:49 Questions.
3:48 Can you just contrast what you must have been feeling 6 days ago,
3:51 leaving the arena, losing 6-1, and what you're feeling now?
3:56 Yeah, it's a good question.
3:58 Uh, no one cares.
3:59 Work harder.
4:00 what he did in game six, uh, game five.
4:04 I goes on and on.
4:06 Really good.
4:07 No one cares.
4:07 We're Carter.
4:09 Cash, what does it mean for you and, uh, when it says, "Sure, I'm over here."
4:14 No.
4:14 Yeah.
4:14 Um, no one cares.
4:15 Work harder.
4:17 All right, that's enough.
4:18 No one cares.
4:19 Work harder.
4:20 I've got a solution.
4:21 Send Steve Simmons into that.
4:22 That's a good point.
4:24 Steve could get up there and say, "Well,
4:26 I've spoken to 20 executives in the Ontario Hockey League."
4:30 Get get somebody that can rattle the cages instead
4:32 of You mentioned those are probably young scribes trying to get
4:36 I've been there.
4:37 I've seen it.
4:37 I've done it.
4:38 It's generally people that just Oh, you're you're a media guy in the OHL.
4:41 [laughter] What?
4:43 You haven't been interviewed by Rogers Cable and G.
4:47 You never were interviewed by Andy Petrillo and Junior B.
4:50 There you go.
4:51 Really?
4:51 Now look what happened.
4:52 and Andy turned into a superstar.
4:54 But at that time, Andy was probably working for free.
4:57 Actually, that's not true cuz I'm a lot older than Andy.
5:00 I was going back for my jersey retirement at Thorn Hill
5:03 and she was just starting out.
5:05 How long did you play at Thornhill?
5:07 One year.
5:07 How do you get a jersey retirement for one year?
5:10 Cuz I [laughter] you make a call and say, "I'm willing to come down there.
5:16 You put my jersey in the rapper.
5:17 Yeah.
5:17 For free snacks in a room, right?
5:19 I'll sign a couple of jerseys and you can sell tickets.
5:22 retired after one year.
5:23 That's the Kawaii argument.
5:25 That is the Kawawaii argument.
5:26 That's literally the Kawawaii argument.
5:27 And I I vehemently disagree with that.
5:30 Dude, the fact that you It still bothers me
5:32 the fact that you don't want to retire Kawhi Leonard's jersey.
5:36 Never.
5:36 Never.
5:36 Just like Jeff O'Neal's up in Thorn Hill.
5:39 Let me look at the stats.
5:40 Okay.
5:40 I have them in front.
5:41 Probably had 120 goals though.
5:43 27 goals, 80 points.
5:46 Yeah.
5:46 As a 13year-old.
5:48 I understand that.
5:48 But still,
5:49 how many games?
5:50 43 games.
5:51 43 games.
5:52 16-year-old drafted first overall.
5:54 That's worthy of going up in the rafties.
5:56 What rank was it?
5:58 Thorn John Street and uh Okay, I think I know which one.
6:02 Here's the thing.
6:02 Is like that program's probably is it thin
6:05 where there's not a lot of success coming?
6:07 I don't know.
6:07 I mean, I don't think the Thunderbirds are still around,
6:10 dude.
6:10 Great organization.
6:11 My captain Jamie Mohead.
6:16 Yes.
6:15 Went to Notre Dame.
6:16 Stud.
6:17 You know who else was on that team?
6:18 Jamal May there really dear friend of mine
6:23 NHL legend Jamie Dinsmore defenseman
6:27 runs the hockey hall of fame president of the hockey
6:30 that's amazing game so there is well franchise
6:33 and you got your jersey after one one year
6:36 I like it well no one cares work harder that's right
6:40 that's that's the right so we'll see yeah are you telling me that we're going
6:44 to get Dylan on Dylan Smositz is the head coach of the Colts is that
6:47 he is going to come on he's got a He wants to explain himself.
6:50 I think he has to he has to explain this.
6:53 Yeah.
6:53 Don't go in guns blazing and saying what the
6:55 No, no.
6:56 It's not It's not the end of the world.
6:58 It doesn't It doesn't really matter.
7:00 It's just a strange thing that has gone viral after you've won too.
7:04 Yes.
7:04 And I would say Quan, the captain was told this is what you're doing.
7:07 I don't blame the kid.
7:08 I don't blame the player.
7:10 It's the coach.
7:10 You know the way it works in the Canadian Hockey League.
7:13 The coach runs everything.
7:14 Sure.
7:14 And determines exactly what's going to go on.
7:16 So, we'll get to the bottom of that.
7:18 I like that they want,
7:19 man.
7:19 Press conferences have been wild in the greater Toronto area right now.
7:22 [laughter] There's some wild pressers going on.
7:26 Like, what's next?
7:27 I don't know.
7:28 Raptors are going to wrap up their season.
7:29 Bobby Webster come out and start.
7:31 I don't know what he's going to say, but I want to hear more about that.
7:34 That'll be a positive press conference, would it not?
7:37 I think so.
7:38 James lost last night.
7:39 It's just amazing how different energy
7:44 promotes and provides different press conferences, right?
7:47 Like Keith P yesterday started his presser praising the Raptors
7:51 for being so cohesive and so hardworking and so together and yet
7:56 they lost in the first round where other situations in different
8:00 sports it's a massive disappointment to get pumped in the first round.
8:05 You know what I mean?
8:05 There's coaches that get fired after losing in the first round.
8:08 Happened in Orlando.
8:09 The Magic coach got fired after losing to Detroit.
8:13 Mhm.
8:12 So, there's there's there's just different tones that reflect in pressers
8:17 where I'm sure the Raptors are going to be
8:18 all happy going out there like we're a great team.
8:21 All we talk about is camaraderie.
8:22 Everybody works so hard.
8:24 It's almost like you can just get the engine
8:27 cooking to what people think heading into the presser.
8:30 Absolutely.
8:30 You only get so many opportunities to get
8:33 in front of the mic and speak to the masses.
8:35 You're right.
8:35 But here's the thing.
8:36 And I spent the weekend with our buddy Strutddy.
8:40 And what does he say?
8:41 Win press conferences, whatever.
8:43 Doesn't matter.
8:44 It's what they do.
8:45 Like that.
8:45 I woke up today thinking doesn't matter how
8:48 the introduction went for Matts and John Chaika.
8:51 It's all over now.
8:52 It's what they do.
8:53 Yeah.
8:53 They're hired.
8:54 Exactly.
8:54 They are on the job running the operation.
8:57 So day one is yesterday technically.
9:00 Today they got a draft.
9:01 Like you know what's going on here?
9:02 And a big draft lottery tonight.
9:04 draft lottery tonight.
9:05 Like you're now on the clock.
9:06 You're on the job.
9:07 So that's that's where it starts.
9:09 That's behind you.
9:10 I think you move forward.
9:12 But whether you win or lose a press conference,
9:15 it's really about your body of work.
9:17 You know, we we talked about whether it was
9:19 the press conference last night or the the one yesterday,
9:23 dryals, McDavids, you name it.
9:25 Like there it doesn't matter if you win those press conferences.
9:28 There's words spoken.
9:29 It's what the actions come with it.
9:31 Well, but I think furthering the point
9:33 that you're making in terms of expectations,
9:35 the the McDavid comment is really what you're talking about here.
9:41 High expectations for an average team.
9:43 If you're an average team with high expectations,
9:45 you're going to be disappointed.
9:46 Yeah.
9:46 Where with the Raptors, it was kind of the opposite.
9:50 It was Yeah.
9:51 low expectations
9:53 with an average team and you're going to be happy about it, right?
9:56 Because ultimately that's what the Raptors were
9:58 this year and that's what they are.
9:59 They're an average team.
9:59 They're kind of a middle of the pack team building,
10:01 but they've been building where if you're a team that's been at the top
10:05 and it completely collapses on you like the Oilers,
10:09 then you got to answer different questions, right?
10:11 And a very different tone.
10:12 And I and the same thing with the the Leafs,
10:14 like the Leafs are a very complicated existence
10:18 because like from if you really scan out,
10:21 you're like, they haven't been to a cup final in 60 years,
10:25 right?
10:25 Like from from that alone,
10:28 people are going to be uptight, right,
10:30 and kind of rattled about the way things are
10:33 going when you just you haven't really been that close.
10:35 Like in my lifetime,
10:36 it's 93 94 9902 and a couple of other times where you thought,
10:41 okay, they got a chance here.
10:43 Including this era, like the Matthews Marner era early on, I was like,
10:46 I I'm very bullish on 100%.
10:48 I'm like, I think this is really trending in the right direction.
10:51 That just reminded me I have something for you in my truck.
10:55 And I want to sign it for you.
10:56 A snicker.
10:57 I was at my dad's house and he made me get some stuff out of the basement.
11:02 And there's a beautiful pic of me scoring
11:05 the go-ahad goal against the Leafs in game six
11:08 with old ugly ass face lying on the ground
11:11 stretching out his stick and Kujo's right there.
11:14 And I'm going to sign it.
11:15 Kers's in it.
11:16 Two Brian suck on that one for a while.
11:19 Okay, sure.
11:20 Get Cber to sign it.
11:21 You scored in game six.
11:22 I had the game-winning goal until Sundine scored with like 30 seconds left.
11:27 Oh, I did.
11:27 I didn't I remember you scoring the OT winner in game three.
11:30 Game one.
11:31 Oh, was that game one?
11:33 Carolina had home ice.
11:34 Yeah, game three.
11:35 Yeah, game three.
11:37 But Kber is [laughter]
11:40 Well, who was laying down when when Francis fed you in game three?
11:43 There was someone fishing on the ice
11:45 like Pat Quinn would have done some Yeah, someone that might have been Cberly.
11:50 Go find that.
11:51 We'll find that tape.
11:52 Here's the thing though.
11:52 The only thing there was a breakdown.
11:54 It's either McCabe or Cabriolet.
11:56 They were on the ice for 45 minutes a night.
11:59 It felt like
12:01 something tells me it might have been Aki Berg.
12:03 Oh no.
12:04 Might have been Aki.
12:05 The best part about it is Cabber is like on his belly fishing like this
12:10 and Tux tells the best video story because Pat would
12:13 never point out who was doing what bad on the video.
12:18 Yeah.
12:18 But Pat starts the video and he goes,
12:20 he always would say, "We got a guy." [laughter] And he goes
12:26 like passive aggressively, right?
12:27 He'd be like, "We got a guy who likes to go in the corner
12:30 and swim around like he's the jamboni."
12:33 And then you see Craber flopping [laughter] around.
12:37 It was so funny.
12:38 That's my favorite story, though.
12:40 Yeah.
12:41 We got to go.
12:42 But he's swimming around like he's the Zamboni.
12:44 Well, cuz when Sundine ties it, you're swimming around at one point.
12:48 Don't you fall off,
12:49 dude.
12:49 I am the defensive zone coverage on me on that shift.
12:52 When Sundine scored, I go to the point, I go to the front of the net.
12:57 It was a disaster.
12:58 It was mayhem, dude.
13:00 Liro on yourself.
13:01 That would be great video to do Libra on yourself.
13:04 Get the libero of Sundine scoring the tying goal
13:07 in game six of my behavior out there on the ice
13:10 cuz it's a wild scene.
13:11 And then you can just see yourself parading
13:13 to the bench like get me off the ice.
13:15 Well, I'll tell you what right now and you can watch the tape.
13:17 Gary Roberts should get two minutes for interference cuz
13:20 on my way out he I think he elbowed me.
13:22 He did something.
13:23 Watch out in your way.
13:24 Well, the refs like there there's two.
13:26 It's Carter ice.
13:27 There's 11 guys.
13:28 The goalies pulled.
13:30 People are laying on the ice.
13:31 Like whistles are gone.
13:32 It was there trying to
13:35 There's me right there.
13:36 That's There's me in the corner.
13:38 No, that's Sean Hill.
13:39 I'm up top right.
13:40 You're up in the top right.
13:41 Okay.
13:42 So, it's McGillney.
13:43 There's Roberts.
13:44 Yeah.
13:44 He lays you out.
13:45 It was Gary.
13:46 Yeah, it was Gary Roberts.
13:47 And now I'm kind of fishing around.
13:48 I'm hooking somebody in the front.
13:50 And then it goes gets buried.
13:52 Another guy's on the ice.
13:53 Like, look how many people on the ice.
13:54 And there's Caver out there, too.
13:56 Yeah, that was a that was crazy.
13:57 And then Marty Chela scored in overtime.
14:00 And look at the helmet.
14:03 Like, how do you let that guy go on the ice with a helmet like that, dude?
14:07 Arty Herby.
14:08 LOOK AT THAT THING.
14:08 [laughter] SOMEBODY GAVE HIM A SOME We had
14:13 a Christmas gift thing and somebody gave Arty a helmet.
14:16 They just bought a garbage old flower pot and like [laughter] st
14:20 they glued like part of a fence on the front of it.
14:25 They gave it to Arty Irving.
14:27 [laughter] Too fashionable.
14:28 He couldn't even wear that.
14:30 Just like it was some ugly bucket with a part
14:32 of a fence just like glued onto the top of it and said,
14:35 "Arty, here's your new helmet." Amazing.
14:37 But he used to come on the plane
14:38 with sewing equipment and sew his gear all the time,
14:42 which is outrageous.
14:44 Outrageous.
14:44 And I'd be like, Arty, cuz his glove was a piece of garbage, man.
14:49 His stick was straight.
14:50 He put like a Bobby or tape job on it.
14:52 He was brutal handling.
14:53 He was a mess.
14:54 Yeah.
14:54 A mess.
14:55 Good goalie, though.
14:56 He was an awesome goalie, man.
14:58 He was red hot ser every game was 2-1.
15:00 Stop pucks.
15:01 Dude, you could rip one off of his collar bone with the biggest
15:06 heater you've ever come up with in your life and he'd be like, "No problem.
15:09 I don't care."
15:11 Yeah.
15:11 Sorry, Arty.
15:11 He'd be like, "I don't care." [laughter]
15:15 Unlike
15:14 Baraso probably be only NHL players, please.
15:17 [laughter] That's my favorite story.
15:19 Assistant coach just took a little flick shot
15:21 at his pads and he just skated right out.
15:23 NHL players only.
15:25 [laughter] It's so arrogant.
15:29 I loved it though.
15:30 I loved it.
15:31 I got along so well with Tommy.
15:32 It's the National Hockey League.
15:34 The most traumatic.
15:34 I don't accept shots from you.
15:36 [laughter] But like watching yourself, it is weird.
15:40 Like I go back like my son goes down YouTube and it's like,
15:43 "Daddy, I saw this play, you know, and you're like, "Oh my god." Oh yeah.
15:49 Like I I like skate saves and like, "Daddy,
15:52 why'd you go down on this play?" I'm like,
15:54 "Well, back then you got to stand up." Like it's totally different game.
15:57 He asked me one time, loves Dominic Cassich.
16:00 He said, "You ever play against Hassik?" So,
16:01 I called up a game where we played a neutral
16:03 sight game in Minneapolis against Buffalo and we tied 2-2.
16:07 Travis Green scored in that game and I sent Greeny the tape of it.
16:11 But it is
16:12 it's Randy Wood scores on me on a wraparound where I go like make a skate save.
16:16 The guy gets around me like it's jarring to watch yourself
16:20 back then in the game how the game has progressed so much.
16:24 It's tough.
16:25 Unbelievable.
16:26 Yeah.
16:26 Okay, so Chris Unich just sent this in.
16:28 It was and it was Andrew Erikson that was laying
16:32 on the ice when you went top shelf in game three.
16:35 I knew it was a random defenseman.
16:37 I thought your gonna bury me on the show.
16:41 Show the OT player.
16:42 Show the play.
16:43 You got it.
16:43 It's a beautiful shot.
16:44 You go top shelf on Kujo and it was Ron Francis.
16:47 But Anderson,
16:48 the best thing about the OT goal is earlier
16:50 in the game I got hit in the eye with a puck.
16:52 Shane Corson took a slapshot, hit me in the face,
16:55 and Aaron Ward goes to hug me after and punches me right in the eye.
16:59 And I'm just like, are you serious?
17:01 [laughter] Such an idiot.
17:03 Yeah.
17:03 And that's And you probably had to deal with that a lot, I would guess.
17:07 But
17:07 yeah, Anders Ericson,
17:09 I remember he ended up
17:10 What is he doing on the ice
17:12 in overtime?
17:13 I thought Anders Erikson was a good player,
17:15 but with that with you guys on the ice like, hey, Fran Francis,
17:19 dude, it's overtime, man.
17:20 Sometimes changes get caught up and you get a little bit of a mismatch
17:23 that Ricky Lee had to have he had to have his finger on the
17:28 Well, you know his signature line.
17:31 Yeah,
17:30 Tom Bryan, you're up.
17:31 [laughter] Well, I'm sure they were waiting to get out there.
17:34 It was a breakdown at the blue line.
17:36 Anyway, it doesn't matter.
17:37 It does matter cuz it was like these are commercial referenced it yesterday.
17:42 Last time they were in the conference final time.
17:44 Doogie, get me a Sharpie cuz I'm going to go get
17:46 the pick for Hayes and I'm going to sign it in the commercial.
17:48 You brought it here.
17:49 Like you actually brought it in.
17:50 Well, my dad made me clear a bunch of stuff out in his basement.
17:52 [clears throat] It's
17:53 But he doesn't even want it.
17:54 Your dad's like, "Get this thing out of my house."
17:56 Well, dude, that's what happens to all these things.
17:58 They look cool for a while and then you're like,
17:59 "Just get this out of my house." Yeah.
18:02 I'm sure no other lease will.
18:04 I'm going to make you I'm going to make you your basement.
18:06 I'll post a pick of uh
18:07 Great.
18:07 That would be a great me accepting that prize.
18:09 I like those old school pictures.
18:11 I I send you a picture every time I'm in Carolina.
18:13 I walk that hallway in the media up top.
18:16 There's you with the black eye sitting there and the the you got like a band-aid
18:21 brutal chain on too.
18:22 You're keeping it together.
18:23 The only pictures that I'm glad I have was there was a lovely lady in Hartford.
18:26 She was the photographer.
18:29 Yeah.
18:29 And every time I took a face off
18:30 with the greats I have like they're in my truck too.
18:33 Mariel Lemieux, Mark Messier, Wayne Gretzky and you're just down at the faceoff.
18:38 They're pretty cool.
18:39 Yeah, that's really cool.
18:40 Um, so we got the draft lottery tonight and any feel for it?
18:45 Absolutely no feel.
18:46 I I have a list of kind of who I think it's
18:51 a combination of who I think deserves to win it and I'm talking
18:54 say the Toronto Maple Leafs.
18:56 Are you going to say the Toronto Maple?
18:57 I the Leafs are in my top five for deserving to win it.
19:01 After 10 years of being middle name, Kevin Low.
19:05 I'll explain it to you.
19:07 I'll explain it to you.
19:08 Kevin Low go on a heater getting the first overall.
19:10 four out of six guy.
19:11 It wasn't Kevin Low, it was
19:13 Tambolini was the guy that
19:15 Tambellini for but Kevin Low was working there though the whole time.
19:18 The one time he wanted it was almost like he was embarrassed.
19:20 He was embarrassed like the third time cuz it went I think either
19:25 Hall or Nan Hopkins back to back and then Yakov and then McDavid.
19:28 They weren't that embarrassed.
19:29 No, of course all of a sudden they were like actually this is great.
19:32 Thanks that one.
19:33 Yeah,
19:33 this is amazing stuff.
19:34 So the Leafs got 8.5% chance, right?
19:37 Like it's not of winning.
19:38 Yes.
19:39 So, the percentages are like they've they've got a decent not a decent chance,
19:43 but about 8 and a half% chance of winning
19:45 the first pick or the second pick and a very slim
19:48 chance of winning the third if one of the teams
19:50 from like 12 down move up to the second pick.
19:54 So, there it is.
19:55 8.5% chance to win the thing, get the first pick,
19:58 8.6% chance to pick second, 3% to pick third.
20:02 They can't pick fourth.
20:04 24.5% chance of picking fifth.
20:07 Yeah.
20:07 And then 44% chance that one scares me.
20:10 That's the thing.
20:10 And then 14.2% chance of moving back too.
20:13 That's almost 50%.
20:15 There's a one in there's a coin flip
20:16 that they're they're picking six% getting that would
20:19 tell you it is more likely than not Boston ends up with the pick this year.
20:25 So this is a monumental evening without being able
20:28 to predict what the future is going to hold.
20:31 Right.
20:31 Regardless of what happens tonight,
20:32 two of the next three first rounders are not in their possession anymore.
20:36 The trades have been done.
20:37 Boston's getting a first and Philly's getting a first.
20:39 We may know the the the outcome of the Carlo deal three hours from now.
20:45 It it may be Fraser Minton and the sixth
20:47 pick or Fraser Minton and a pick next year, right?
20:51 That will be unprotected and then Philly's pick moves back and it's unprotected.
20:57 Yeah.
20:56 So, tonight is a monumental evening for the Leafs in terms of their future,
21:00 in terms of I think just trying to get a a positive story going here, right?
21:04 like if you can win the lottery tonight,
21:06 there's been there's there's so much there's so much anger right now
21:10 surrounding this team
21:12 and it's directed at a at a litany of people, right?
21:16 A lot of it is at the team,
21:17 the organization, some of it's at the president and CEO,
21:20 some of it's at the GM, even though he's been on the job for
21:22 I wouldn't describe it as anger, Brian.
21:24 I wouldn't.
21:24 No.
21:25 How would you describe it?
21:26 I think it would be concerned.
21:28 They're concerned because they don't know much about John Chica and they're
21:33 all they're hearing is these gory stories and there's just concern.
21:36 Can this guy move forward and get the job done?
21:39 I think the anger and the vitriol is all like
21:42 surpassed and now it's just like what have we got here?
21:45 And it's almost like a concern, right?
21:48 Again, I think the reason I would use anger and that might
21:51 be strong frustration whichever whatever word you want to use, right?
21:55 It's not all directed at the team.
21:57 Some of it's directed at the media,
21:59 at the other fan bases that are constantly trolling the Leafs.
22:02 People are just pissed.
22:03 That's my point is there's just a a general feeling of dismay and
22:10 disruption, right?
22:11 Like and and that's natural because the season was so bad.
22:14 And now Chris Johnson's got a report in the Athletic Today saying that Matthews,
22:20 I guess as of now not 100% committed to returning next year.
22:24 Now he's got two years left on his deal.
22:26 So, the Leafs have a say in this clearly,
22:28 but if Matthews ever determines I want out, then he's getting out.
22:32 It would be an absolute gong show if it went public that he wants out.
22:36 They didn't trade him.
22:37 So, I think if your argument is, well,
22:39 the Leafs still hold the cards and they could tell
22:40 him to stuff it and let him play it out.
22:42 I just don't see that being a reasonable option.
22:45 No.
22:45 So, ultimately, Austin is going to determine his future.
22:49 If this was in fact true and I was the organization and like
22:56 what did Chris Johnson says and he wants to see what happens with trades.
23:00 Yeah.
23:00 More or less that that he's still uncertain of
23:02 then you can't do business like that because I'm not going to let a star
23:06 player sit back on his couch and cross his feet and drink a beer
23:09 and assess what he thinks is best for the team and then you do
23:13 some things and he ultimately doesn't like it and then still says I want out.
23:16 I'm not running my business like that.
23:18 Quinn Hughes.
23:19 What you're saying?
23:20 It's Quinn Hughes.
23:21 Well, Quinn Hughes, they made some transactions to apparently appease him
23:23 and make him happy and he still said, "Piss on it.
23:26 I'm out of here.
23:26 We're not that good." So, what the hell's the sense of doing that?
23:29 If you catch wind of this, and this is in fact true,
23:32 I'm just going to the player and say,
23:33 "Removing you." I'm not going to sit around and wait and say
23:37 and and try on a dress and say, "Do you like this?"
23:41 Yeah.
23:40 And if he says, "No, like I'm just not doing it.
23:42 I'm not doing it because what is he going to sit
23:44 back and just you you do a bunch of transaction?" No,
23:47 that's not good enough.
23:48 It doesn't You're screwed anyway.
23:49 Still leaves.
23:50 But the the thing that I do you understand what I'm saying?
23:52 Like No, I I understand what you're saying.
23:54 I just I'm not convinced the Maple Leafs will look at it that way.
23:57 But the other thing about it is Brian,
23:59 we talked about this yesterday and it's it's clear to everyone.
24:03 There's only so much they can do with what they have.
24:06 So if the onus is on the team to make all these grandiose transaction,
24:10 what are they going to really do with no assets?
24:13 Here's the reality.
24:16 you.
24:16 It may be in their best interest.
24:18 It may be the only option moving forward to actually compete for a championship
24:22 at some point in the next 10 years to completely blow this thing up,
24:28 right?
24:28 The only way that even becomes remotely possible
24:30 as an option is if Matthews initiates that, right?
24:34 Hand up going,
24:35 I'm out of here.
24:36 I'm not going to sign in two years, so you might as well Matthew Kach.
24:40 Furthermore, if he does that, I believe,
24:43 my opinion, if Matthews decides, I'm out of here,
24:47 they will figure that out and the next
24:49 call will be to William Knander and probably say,
24:51 "You're out of here, too." You know what I mean?
24:53 Like, if we're going this route, we're all you're all going.
24:55 Everybody's on the table.
24:56 everything's on the table and we're all going
24:58 to But I don't believe based on the press conference yesterday,
25:00 based on all the reporting,
25:03 right,
25:02 and based on common sense from a business standpoint,
25:05 just money, dollars and cents, selling jerseys, tickets,
25:09 and selling hope that Naples Sports and Entertainment
25:13 and ownership want anything to do with that plan.
25:16 Like I think they want Matthews here, Knander here,
25:20 and find a way to get back into the winning circles.
25:23 So they need Matthews on board with that though.
25:25 Yes.
25:25 One of the biggest one of the biggest power brokers
25:28 in the next year is going to be Austin Matthews agent.
25:31 Of course,
25:32 he's also Conor McDavid's agent.
25:34 And you know who else?
25:35 Zach Rowenski.
25:36 Zach Rowensky and Roman Yosi.
25:38 And those are all guys, I bet you, that want to have a sniff at a win.
25:42 And they're all guys that are probably assessing their teams and their teams
25:46 are in similar situations where if they want to get a championship,
25:49 they'd look at their rosters and say,
25:50 "I just don't know about it." But some are something's got to give.
25:53 It's like, are you going to
25:55 But not everyone can just go say, "I'm going to Florida now."
25:57 But here's the thing,
25:58 right?
25:58 Like, not everyone can just say, "I'm going to Vegas.
26:00 I want to go to Vegas." But there's no guarantee.
26:03 This is the the where I was going to go.
26:05 There's no guarantee that you go, "Okay, I want to sniff to go win.
26:09 Put me in Vegas.
26:10 Okay, Vegas gets knocked out in the second round.
26:13 I love Tampa.
26:14 Put me in Tampa." First round exits four years in a row.
26:17 There's no guarant You start chasing it, it's a dangerous game.
26:20 Look at Teimu and Paul Korea.
26:21 They went out to Colorado.
26:22 Oh, it's like we just got to go to Colorado
26:24 and they got they they didn't get it done.
26:26 I'm going to come back to my what I wanted to say
26:28 originally is you've got to build and have confidence as an organization.
26:33 And I get it.
26:33 You have to cater to your star players to a point,
26:38 but at at at some point their job is to play hockey.
26:41 Your job as a manager or CEO or whatever is to build the organization,
26:46 the culture that they want to be a part of it instead of going,
26:50 I'm going to hold you hostage to it.
26:52 And I'm not suggesting Matthews or McDavid or any of them are doing that.
26:56 But what what we're seeing and because we're talking about in the media daily,
27:00 Brady Kachchuck, you name it,
27:01 you know, Quinn Hughes, it it's you still have to build the program
27:06 that is successful whether they're there or not.
27:10 Yes.
27:10 And that's where I think this is getting lost and it's
27:12 all better do this or this guy's out of here.
27:15 The organization isn't going to fold up the minute that player X leaves.
27:19 Now, you might look different,
27:21 but you've got to figure out and they want to be a part of a winner.
27:25 Well, start creating a winner or get back to it.
27:28 You know, the Oilers took a step back, get to work this summer,
27:31 do something here in in in Leafland, they took a big step back this year,
27:35 but do you have an opportunity to, you know,
27:37 like a Boston to get back into the mix quicker than not?
27:41 No, that's only going to happen if Matthews is here next
27:43 year and he plays much better than he has the last,
27:47 right?
27:47 Like, he's got a lot more to give as well.
27:49 Like I do I am curious about that where
27:50 the team stands on that directive towards him.
27:54 Like hey we understand you're not happy.
27:57 We're not exactly ecstatic with all of a sudden we're a 40 goal scorer
28:00 where we were a 60 goal scorer there for a while and winning heart trophies.
28:04 Here's a weird thing.
28:04 Let's get back to that.
28:06 We're not privy to anything.
28:07 We're not privy to how this guy's health is too
28:10 because he hasn't looked 100% healthy the last two years.
28:14 Hasn't been able to play every game.
28:16 All of a sudden he wakes up in Germany.
28:17 he was dayto-day and we're not sure what's going on there.
28:20 Like if he's 100% healthy,
28:22 I would expect him to be a top tier player like he is.
28:26 But they have the answers.
28:28 We don't.
28:28 Yeah.
28:28 Well, and and as people point out, Danny tweeting and saying,
28:31 "Well, Ma Matthew's probably pissed about that Guda." Those are his teammates.
28:36 That's not Keith Py's problem.
28:38 Like that's not the front office.
28:39 That's that's his team.
28:40 Go talk to your teammates.
28:42 Yeah.
28:42 And a lot and two of them that were on the ice
28:44 have been your teammates literally every second you've been a Leaf.
28:47 Go call up William Knander and Morgan Riley.
28:49 Have a chat with them.
28:50 Like that's not if if that's the case.
28:52 I don't I'm not saying that that's what's driving this
28:54 guy in his basement tweeting in.
28:56 He doesn't know what I [laughter] hear you.
28:58 But everyone's trying to pinpoint what is the problem
29:01 and and you know what and he wasn't happy with the response.
29:04 He wasn't happy with the outcome of it all.
29:06 It comes back to our initial comment press conference and no press conference.
29:10 Now everybody's got an opportunity to work here and get to work.
29:14 Yep.
29:14 Get to work.
29:14 And that's it, man.
29:15 When the dust settles, like you you Exactly.
29:18 They can you at least can win a lottery tonight.
29:21 Yes.
29:21 So, I've got my list.
29:22 A combination of who I think deserves it plus who I kind of want to see.
29:27 Okay.
29:27 Win.
29:27 Okay.
29:27 So, we'll get to that.
29:28 We're going to hit the the draft lottery.
29:30 The three of us three spins.
29:31 Oh, nice.
29:32 All three of us get a spin.
29:33 We're going to do that.
29:34 Confirm or deny coming up.
29:35 Joe from the bridge.
29:36 Let's end this segment with greatness and then go right to commercial.
29:39 Anders Eerson.
29:40 What's his name?
29:41 Anders Anders Eric.
29:44 Anders Ericson.
29:44 He ended up a great flame, I believe.
29:46 Okay, let's see it.
29:49 Okay, there's Gary Roberts out there.
29:52 Who's that?
29:52 Yonis Hogland.
29:53 Was early in the first overtime.
29:58 Dude stepped up there.
30:00 That's Erikson.
30:02 And it is Oh, it's Cabbr.
30:05 Cabet was sleeping looking down at the puck.
30:07 Reaching up though.
30:10 [laughter] Fred in there for 44 reaching for the Yeah, that was there's enough.
30:16 What the hell's going on back in 02?
30:19 Anyway, all right.
30:20 Confirm coming up.
30:21 Overdrive continues TSN 1050 and on YouTube Five.
34:26 Now back [music] to overdrive with Hayes Noodles and the Odog.
34:41 Overdrive continues powered by FanDuel bringing you
34:44 more ways to play your game your way.
34:46 I'm going to hit the draft lottery a little bit later on.
34:49 Honestly, it's been a decade.
34:51 Like the Leafs won the the the Matthews lottery 10 years ago.
34:54 If they win it tonight, were you going to yell it again?
34:57 No, I'm not yelling anything.
34:58 I'm not yelling anything.
34:59 I hate that clip.
35:00 I'm trying to kill that clip.
35:02 We're calling Dave Naylor.
35:04 Why would we call Dave Naylor?
35:06 As they're doing it, if they get down to the nitty-gritty and what do they do?
35:10 They do the first pick right off the bat.
35:13 I thought this is No, no, no.
35:14 This is what I'm saying.
35:15 We haven't been paying attention to it in Toronto in 10 years.
35:18 That's right.
35:19 So now ESPN owns it and it's run completely differently.
35:22 They actually have a very cool system.
35:24 I missed a lot of it last year because I believe it was game one Leafs Panthers.
35:27 I was at I was at the the rink.
35:29 Yeah.
35:30 You had your like I remember getting down there and they're like,
35:32 "Hey, the Islanders won the lottery." And I was
35:34 kind of floored because they went from 10th down to one to get it.
35:38 But it's a completely different process.
35:40 We're coming up live at like 7:00 tonight on radio, on YouTube, tsn.ca.
35:46 We could have Naylor on on hold.
35:48 But we're going to find out quickly if the Leafs
35:49 win it or if they end up in second.
35:52 And we're going to know pretty quickly if they lose their pick as well.
35:54 Think about that.
35:54 A year ago, Matthew Schaefer had played 17 games in junior.
36:00 Yeah.
36:00 And the Leafs were playing Florida and on their way to win game one,
36:04 win game two, and then being up two nothing and 3-1 in game three.
36:08 A year later, this Schaefer is What a pick.
36:11 What a pick.
36:12 Organization changing.
36:14 Yes, for sure.
36:14 Where'd he play Junior?
36:16 Wasn't in Barry.
36:18 Yi.
36:18 Oh, there you go.
36:18 Had some sharp shooters, man.
36:21 Carlo Kolakavo and Conor McDavid.
36:24 That Barry team's Conor Brown.
36:26 Sharp shooters.
36:26 Yeah, they sure do.
36:27 Well, Barry's on their way through.
36:29 They're on their way through to play Kitchener, too, right?
36:32 Bob McKenzie is he's waiting for these guys up.
36:35 Say it's Mike.
36:37 No, I know that it's Mike McKenzie runs the show.
36:40 Bob is going to be at the Memorial Gardens waiting for this this series.
36:43 I can bank on that.
36:44 Yeah,
36:45 but uh yesterday, last night after Barry beat Brford,
36:50 there was a press conference featuring the head coach
36:53 and the captain and it went viral pretty much immediately.
36:59 And should we play it one more time?
37:01 Why don't we if if we have it just for reference purposes?
37:04 Okay, let's play it.
37:05 This is postgame.
37:07 Oh, you can't play it.
37:08 Okay, because we've got him on the video.
37:09 All right, so fair enough.
37:10 We'll bring in the coach who was a part of the press conference.
37:13 here is the head coach of the Barry Colts, Dylan Smoskitz.
37:16 How you doing, Dylan?
37:18 Good.
37:18 Hazy B, thanks for having me out, guys.
37:20 I I just got to say I'm a massive massive fan of the show.
37:24 I honestly don't know if there are two bigger fans than me and my dad.
37:27 We watch it every day.
37:29 We don't listen to it on on the radio.
37:31 We watch it on TV.
37:32 We watch you guys on TV every single day.
37:34 I'll tell you what, he cares.
37:36 He just [laughter]
37:38 He just softened his stance.
37:39 He just softened his stance.
37:41 He sure did.
37:41 We appreciate Now Larry King can't go at it now.
37:44 Exactly.
37:44 Now the journalism starts to fade and it's just poor good guys talking.
37:49 Uh so Dylan, we appreciate you doing this though.
37:51 I mean, as you know, the the presser last night,
37:55 it's gotten a lot of attention, a lot of people buzzing about it online.
37:59 Explain what happened.
38:00 Like, how did it get to a point where where you
38:02 and your captain stepped up to the podium and and answered every question,
38:06 no one cares, work harder.
38:09 The first thing I'll say about that is that it was that was my lead.
38:13 Kan Herson took my lead.
38:14 That's that's something that I instructed him to do
38:17 and and the kid was just being a good soldier.
38:19 So there's nothing about this that has anything to do with Quesan Ages.
38:22 He is an outstanding human being.
38:25 Um you know, everyone thinks he's a great hockey player, which he is,
38:28 but he's a much much better person even than a hockey player.
38:31 You know, the game ends.
38:32 Um we come back from a 3-1 deficit in the series.
38:35 you win a big a big game seven in a hard place to play.
38:39 And you got to give so much credit to Brford
38:41 and and the Heman family and their coach Jay McKe.
38:44 Like they really have constructed a great team and a great environment.
38:49 It's it's really tough to play there.
38:51 You know, we come back in and and all
38:53 year long it's been about this brotherhood in Barry.
38:55 It's it's brothers.
38:56 It's a family and it's it's daily conversation about the family.
39:00 And I had this grand idea after the win that I
39:03 would bring the family in with me to the press conference.
39:06 And I thought it'd be really cool to have all the guys
39:08 in there with their hats on, their Eastern Conference Championship hats,
39:11 uh, and do the presser together, you know, instead of having one guy,
39:14 but let's have the brothers, let's have the family.
39:16 Um, you know, the room was small.
39:18 I was told it wasn't going to work.
39:19 And instead of being a an adult about it
39:22 and being mature about it and saying, "Okay, no problem.
39:24 Let's, you know, go and have a normal press conference as per usual." uh
39:28 kind of went uh the other way with it and it was a decision that's,
39:31 you know, I regret immediately.
39:33 Uh I took away from a really really
39:35 good game and a really really good hockey series.
39:38 Um so that's uh that one's on me.
39:40 That's that was a big oopsie and and something that I'll
39:43 learn from and and you better believe won't happen again.
39:46 So what was the deal with this room?
39:48 Like was it a closet you guys were in?
39:50 Like why couldn't more guys just wheel in there and just all crowd in there?
39:54 And obviously looking back on it, you would take a mulligan on that one.
39:58 You wouldn't have done that again.
39:59 I'm I'm assuming from what you Yeah.
40:03 Yeah.
40:02 A mulligan.
40:02 I would do a redo.
40:03 Oh, 100%.
40:04 But oh, you know, I've never been to your house.
40:07 I would imagine your closets are big are bigger than this room.
40:09 It It was a pretty tight fit there.
40:13 So, in terms of, you know, the reaction within the room,
40:16 we've been discussing press conferences a lot
40:18 on this show the last couple of days.
40:20 I know you're aware of that.
40:21 Um, you know, a lot of people have come
40:23 to the defense of the media in there and and you know,
40:26 you know what it's like in these smaller towns and it's just it's media there.
40:30 They're just trying to do their job
40:31 and they're asking very reasonable questions.
40:34 Like at any point did you stop and think maybe I should turn this the other
40:38 direction like while you were in the seat
40:40 because I fell for the guy asking the questions.
40:42 They were pretty good qually good questions, very reasonable questions.
40:46 Like, was this about the Ontario Hockey League that you were taking
40:50 a stance against or the media that was in the room covering it?
40:55 I've been a member of the Ontario Hockey League as a player for four years,
40:58 and now as a coach, as assistant for three, and ahead for one.
41:01 Um, there is nothing I ever had against the OHL.
41:05 I would I would recommend it to any young
41:08 player who wants to to mature as a person,
41:11 who wants to mature as a player, who wants to get a chance to follow a dream.
41:14 The OHL is the place to be.
41:16 And then, you know, listen, as a coach, I get on the bus,
41:19 I go to these rinks to do a job.
41:21 You know, players go to do a job and media members go to do a job.
41:24 And and I I totally disrespected um their job.
41:29 They, you know, they paid their gas, they get there,
41:31 they they prepare questions for me and expect an answer.
41:34 And I did not give that to them.
41:36 I I did not allow them to do their job.
41:38 But, you know, more importantly, I disrespected their job.
41:41 And that's something that again,
41:42 as it was going on and you're kind of in that moment and you
41:46 just finished a seven game series where
41:48 fans are threatening your life behind the bench,
41:50 which again, that's junior hockey.
41:51 It's going to happen.
41:52 It's it's a pretty cool environment.
41:53 But in the moment, uh, you know,
41:55 it was just a big big mistake that once things calmed down,
41:58 I was like, man, that's that was a bad one.
42:01 Well, it's like you say, it's a bad when you move on from it.
42:03 Do you do you wake up today and get a phone
42:05 call from the league or you know any anything like
42:08 that or your phone obviously blows up because you know
42:10 you're trending on Twitter but uh you know anything as far
42:14 as repercussions or you you know you disarm people
42:17 with the truth like you just did and said hey I I
42:20 made a mistake I'm going to move on because you
42:22 actually should be focusing on trying to win the next series.
42:24 Kitchener's waiting for you guys.
42:27 Kitchener's waiting.
42:27 It's going to be 7,500 people you know screaming yelling.
42:30 They got a really good team over there.
42:32 Really well built.
42:33 Well, coach Jussi Hoke is a fantastic coach.
42:36 So, our group is is in for a challenge that obviously we're up
42:38 for and we'll be prepared for, but it's going to be a lot of fun.
42:42 It's going to be a good war.
42:43 Um, you know, as for repercussions, you know,
42:45 that's something that the league will will look over.
42:48 You know, I I know for for a fact that uh I don't deserve to get away scot-free,
42:53 so I don't anticipate that being the uh the case.
42:56 Um, but like you said, Noodles, it's uh it's,
42:59 you know, we we got a job to do here.
43:01 We got a job to do.
43:01 We got to win four more games and we got to punch our ticket to Colona.
43:05 Coach, take us through the series.
43:07 Like you guys were down 3-1 against a hell of a team in Brford.
43:11 You lose one of your best players.
43:13 Just what was your message?
43:15 I know there's cliches you can toss out like shift at a time, period at a time,
43:20 but how did you guys ultimately get this done against
43:23 a a great team in Brford when you're down 3-1 like that?
43:27 You might be all over me for this one, O dog, but it's no cliche.
43:31 The answer is no one cares.
43:32 Work harder.
43:32 I mean, that's really what it came down to, man.
43:34 Like, you know, our [laughter] captain, our captain, Colbo went, you know,
43:38 if you're a Utah Mammoth fan, man, you've got a hockey player coming your way.
43:42 Like, you want to talk about 200 foot culture guy leader.
43:46 This guy 5% body fat, 212 pounds,
43:49 like hockey player, you know, he goes down, he's out.
43:53 So, now we're we're down in game five.
43:55 We come back, we battle back, we score an overtime in in the Madhouse on Market,
43:59 the one of the toughest places to play.
44:01 We rally two days later,
44:02 we score an overtime goal in game six in front of a packed crowd at Sadlon.
44:06 You know, people are going crazy and now it's okay.
44:08 We made it to game seven, you know, pretty good.
44:11 Good showing.
44:11 Probably not going to win.
44:13 You you go and win that game 5 nothing.
44:15 Like there's just nothing else I can say.
44:17 But the boys didn't care.
44:18 They just continued to work harder.
44:21 Coach, we really appreciate you coming on, man.
44:23 I think the way you just handled that and your explanation
44:25 for it and the responsibility for it was excellent.
44:28 Good luck moving forward and thanks a lot for doing this.
44:31 Appreciate it.
44:32 I appreciate it, gentlemen.
44:33 Always a big fan.
44:34 Can't wait to watch you guys tomorrow.
44:36 You got it.
44:36 We appreciate it.
44:37 Nobody cares, coach.
44:38 [laughter]
44:40 Work harder.
44:41 Work harder.
44:41 Thanks, Dylan.
44:42 We appreciate it.
44:43 Dylan Smoskitz, the head coach of the Barry Cole's
44:45 trying to get to the Memorial Cup in Colona.
44:49 Yeah,
44:48 God's country out there in Colona.
44:51 Beautiful place.
44:51 Beautiful countryside.
44:54 Beautiful.
44:54 Great golf.
44:55 Great hockey market, too, right?
44:56 Great hockey market.
44:57 Great golf courses.
44:58 Wine if you're a wine person.
45:00 Love it.
45:01 Mission Hill, you got all Quales Ridge.
45:03 You got all these Colts, man.
45:05 Let's get the Colts.
45:06 And I got a man on the case for Predator Ridge.
45:09 Ray Ferraro.
45:11 No.
45:10 No, he wouldn't.
45:11 Dick Zokal.
45:12 Remember old Dick Zok.
45:14 Richard Zokal.
45:15 Absolutely.
45:16 Richard Zokad.
45:17 He's out there at Predator Ridge.
45:19 Come on, Dick Zokal.
45:20 Give me a follow on Twitter.
45:21 Yeah, big fan of him.
45:23 Okay.
45:23 Well, there you go.
45:24 Barry's uh But I like what that guy said.
45:26 I like the coach.
45:26 That's exactly how you handle it.
45:27 I screwed up.
45:28 Shouldn't have done it.
45:29 Won't happen again.
45:31 Perfect.
45:32 Yeah.
45:32 All good.
45:32 We were in a We were in a toilet stall, but we had to deal with it better.
45:36 Listen, the reality is [laughter]
45:39 like none of these again,
45:40 we keep talking about the press conferences the last couple of days.
45:45 No one's leaving prison here or anything.
45:47 Like transitioning to John Chica.
45:49 Yes, he made mistakes in Arizona.
45:52 I don't know if it's going to work for him here.
45:53 I'm pessimistic.
45:54 I'm a little skeptical.
45:55 He didn't kill somebody leaving Arizona.
45:57 No kidding.
45:57 And that's what I've always fascinated when people say like,
46:01 "Oh, that market would never stand for a rebuild or that market
46:05 would never stand for that coach coming in or that GM
46:08 after a press conference and people get mad and scream at the clouds.
46:11 It's all over with and you're moving forward
46:13 and you're dealing with whatever's thrown at you.
46:15 You have ultimately have no choice." You're right.
46:17 But in that moment, who cares?
46:18 work harder.
46:19 You're right.
46:20 But in that moment, new motto on over you.
46:23 In that moment, it's fair as a fan base or media to go, did you leave inspired?
46:29 What do you think of it?
46:31 We asked CJ.
46:32 CJ's words were like, "That was awkward." Like,
46:36 it was an awkward press conference yesterday.
46:39 But that's fine.
46:40 Yeah.
46:40 You move on.
46:42 Listen, I I think I look back on yesterday and we got to put
46:45 it to bed at some point because we've got other stuff to get to.
46:48 But like the Simmons P interaction was a wild interaction.
46:55 Yeah.
46:54 Um but I think you know if I would I wonder if Keith P looks back
47:00 on yesterday and and wishes he he had that opportunity back to spin it and say,
47:07 "Okay, I knew these questions were coming, right?
47:09 Here's what I this is why I like John Jacob,
47:13 right?
47:12 This is what I saw.
47:14 This is what I heard.
47:15 This is what I believe in." Cuz I'll say this about about this decision by P.
47:20 It takes stones to do it.
47:23 Sure.
47:22 Takes serious courage.
47:24 The easy play would have been I can't do that.
47:26 I'm going to get crucified for that hiring, right?
47:29 I'm not going to hire this guy.
47:30 Get him away.
47:31 Get him out of here.
47:32 No way.
47:33 Let's go with an assistant GM somewhere where I can sell.
47:37 You know, hey, he's been in a great organization.
47:39 He's just waiting for his time and here's our time.
47:41 Again, I'm not I don't know if this is going to work.
47:44 Part of me is very skeptical.
47:45 based on Chica's run in Arizona and the history
47:48 of the Leafs and where the team is at right now.
47:50 That's just the reality.
47:52 But it's a bold play.
47:54 It is
47:55 like to say I know what everyone else is thinking.
47:58 I'm still going to do it.
47:59 That's You're right.
48:00 It takes some stones to do that.
48:02 It takes more than that.
48:03 It takes courage, stones, you name it.
48:06 All of that.
48:07 What is this?
48:08 By the way, you don't want this.
48:09 Which is disgusting.
48:10 That's not true.
48:11 I Those are three of my favorite people on earth right there.
48:13 I love Curtis Joseph.
48:15 I love Brian McCabe.
48:16 Look at Cable though.
48:16 Look at the positioning.
48:17 He's swimming on the ice.
48:18 Look at his patented goatee.
48:21 [laughter] He is touching.
48:23 Why are you in the air?
48:25 He jumped
48:25 because I I took a shot and Kujo saved
48:27 it and then the puck bounced up in the air.
48:29 See the puck right there?
48:30 And then I potted it right in the side of the net.
48:34 Okay.
48:34 But Al's brother has connected with us and this is
48:37 being donated to Al's brother's stag because you don't want it.
48:41 I love that.
48:42 No, I want it.
48:43 But I want Al's brother to have it even more so.
48:46 Or I want whoever's willing to buy it.
48:48 I guess Al's brother's bag will probably be Al's
48:50 brother is going to just pocket the cash.
48:52 That's That's what I'm I'm kind of
48:55 basically what he's saying is donate it so I can uh take for a wedding.
48:58 Al's brother pay for parlays in the NFL season.
49:03 Exactly.
49:02 That's the best part is Al's brother's going to take the money from that.
49:05 His fiance is going to say, "Awesome.
49:06 So that should uh pay for the flowers or, you know,
49:09 pay for the honeymoon." and Al's brother's going to say,
49:11 "Actually, it's going to pay for a 17 parlay." I'm at a card show right now.
49:15 And I'm about to buy You're dying, dude.
49:17 It's okay.
49:17 I don't know what's going on with my voice, though.
49:19 It's all good.
49:19 It's all good.
49:20 Uh yeah, you're right.
49:21 Alice Brother's going to buy like a Gretzky rookie card with that.
49:24 That's what's going to happen.
49:26 I'm keeping it.
49:27 [laughter] Don't keep it,
49:28 Alice Brother.
49:29 It's coming your way.
49:30 You got it.
49:31 I love it.
49:31 I love that.
49:32 Okay, confirm or deny coming up.
49:34 Mike Johnson in studio.
49:35 We got the Jays back in action.
49:36 Vlatty not in the lineup tonight.
49:38 He's getting a day's rest.
49:39 It's not going well for Vlatty.
49:40 No,
49:41 not going well for Vlatty right now offensively.
49:43 So, we'll get into that more still to come.
49:45 Overdrive continues TSN 1050 and on TSN 4.
53:55 Now back to overdrive with Hayes Noodles and the OD dog.
54:04 All right, confirming tonight coming up.
54:06 Mike Johnson in studio.
54:08 Jay's back in action tonight.
54:10 Vlatty not in the lineup.
54:11 Scheduled day off.
54:13 numbers aren't great for Vlatty.
54:14 Or is it?
54:16 Well, listen, you look at his power numbers.
54:19 Um, they're really low.
54:21 I mean, his fly ball rate is really low.
54:23 His his home run per fly ball rate,
54:26 all these different stats and numbers that they have in in baseball.
54:30 Uh, pretty much the lowest of his career.
54:32 And I think he enjoyed his off season to be honest with you.
54:37 Definitely possible.
54:38 Right from the get-go,
54:39 he had the parade in his hometown and it looked like it probably didn't stop.
54:44 Well, listen, he had an unbelievable playoff.
54:47 Unbelievable playoff.
54:49 Quickly how that like when your performances like this, how quickly that ends.
54:53 The perfect example of that because he still is the king of the city.
54:59 Yes.
54:58 Like he is at the top of the heap in terms of, you know,
55:01 people just love Latty and they want him to do great.
55:04 Well, he's got a month left.
55:06 That's the thing.
55:06 Like it's one of those things where well people
55:08 are like hey lots of hits pretty good batting average.
55:11 He's got like a 420 on base.
55:12 Awesome.
55:14 Two home runs and it's May.
55:15 Two dingers.
55:16 Yeah.
55:16 You're like this is getting a little bit like crazy.
55:19 What do you think?
55:20 $500 million contract.
55:21 You can fire up a 15 home run season and think that's it ain't driving.
55:25 No.
55:25 And it's it's just it's a matter of his importance, right?
55:28 Like the offense Springer's back.
55:29 Barger should be back in a weekend.
55:32 Kirk is still a ways away.
55:33 You know, they're they're they're trying to tread water here, man.
55:36 They're just trying to stay stay above water.
55:39 No guarantee when they get them back, those guys hit the ground running.
55:42 Exactly.
55:42 Take them a bit to settle back in.
55:44 So, Vlatt's healthy and dialed in.
55:47 You got you got to get it going, right?
55:48 You got you got to figure this out.
55:50 Um, all right.
55:51 Mike Johnson coming up.
55:52 Vegas with a win last night.
55:53 Mitch Mner.
55:54 Mitch Mner.
55:55 That was a really cool empty net, though.
55:57 Yeah, it was like that.
55:57 I don't think he was intending on scoring, quite frankly.
56:00 He was just getting the puck out and killing the clock.
56:02 But it went in and I thought his postgame he looked very relaxed.
56:06 He's enjoying life out there.
56:08 I gotta I gotta say Mitch is in a pretty
56:10 good place out in Vegas in Carolina in overtime last night.
56:13 He was going to charge the mound.
56:14 We got to talk about that.
56:15 Yes.
56:15 To Quinnville was furious with a linesman.
56:18 You don't see a coach yelled a linesman very much.
56:19 I would be furious too.
56:21 How much time was left on the clock?
56:22 Not much.
56:23 It was an icing.
56:23 Doesn't even matter in a playoff game.
56:25 It's icing.
56:26 He was yelling even before the goal went in.
56:28 He was yelling at the linesman.
56:29 He knew he knew it was
56:30 and then it goes in and he he furious
56:34 charged the mound.
56:35 Uh so more on that into the next hour.
56:36 Overdrive continues up on YouTube This is Overdrive with Hayes,
1:01:10 Noodles, and the OD [music] Dog on TSN 1050.
1:01:13 I need you to hold on.
1:01:16 Heaven is a place not too far away.
1:01:20 We all know I should be.
1:01:21 [music] Hour two overdrive continues.
1:01:24 Powered by FanDuel, Brian Hayes, Odog, Jeff O'Neal, Jamie Noodles, Mlennon,
1:01:30 and look who's jumped on the train.
1:01:32 Look who's jumped on the train in the second hour.
1:01:35 Disappointing you didn't play it coming in, JP.
1:01:37 Yeah, Mike Johnson in here.
1:01:39 He's got He runs the operation in the second hour.
1:01:41 You want to hit it just quick.
1:01:42 JP, get back on the train, folks.
1:01:51 Hour, too.
1:01:52 Brian Hayes, Jamie Mlennon, Jeff O'Neal, and MJ in studio.
1:01:55 There you go.
1:01:56 It's seamless.
1:01:57 I mean, this guy is a season pro.
1:01:59 This feels like old school.
1:02:00 We used to do this all the time.
1:02:01 All the time
1:02:01 around here.
1:02:02 You know who we are?
1:02:03 Chaika and Sundine.
1:02:04 Sundine and Cha.
1:02:05 Just two buddies running the operation
1:02:07 since 2012.
1:02:09 How about that?
1:02:10 feeding off each other.
1:02:11 They've been buddies for a long, long time.
1:02:12 We have complimentary visions in alignment vertical integration.
1:02:17 Totally.
1:02:17 The connection between the two is undeniable.
1:02:19 It really is.
1:02:20 They stayed in touch since the mem Cup back in 2012.
1:02:23 Yeah.
1:02:24 What do you make of that, Johnny?
1:02:26 I mean, it was not surprising what's happened.
1:02:29 We all sort of knew it was going this direction.
1:02:33 You know, press conference yesterday was illuminating.
1:02:36 Um, I don't think they the people on the stage
1:02:39 were should have been surprised by any of the questions.
1:02:41 I mean, maybe the tone of them, but the actual questions.
1:02:44 Uh, for Matts, like having spoken to Matts
1:02:47 and sort of hearing what he said yesterday,
1:02:50 I I think he's very much with his immediate
1:02:53 eye on that that culture is a weird word,
1:02:56 but like the dressing room and how guys are
1:02:58 are treated and treating each other and the atmosphere
1:03:00 and and that's when he's referring to the older
1:03:02 guys and Douggee and Wendell and Tux or whoever.
1:03:06 um that he's gonna go down that road of of trying
1:03:08 to make the room a way that he envisions it should be.
1:03:13 Yeah.
1:03:13 And for but let me just interrupt there, Johnny.
1:03:15 For people that think that Matts is this skillful European player, he is that.
1:03:22 But this guy
1:03:24 Yeah, fiery.
1:03:25 That's right.
1:03:25 Like he can lose it and
1:03:28 yes,
1:03:28 he can set the standard where it's just like I've seen it
1:03:31 happen where he's not just ah whatever those guys can do it.
1:03:34 That's that's not the way he could.
1:03:35 No, he's not saying I'm going to lead only by example.
1:03:38 Yeah,
1:03:38 that's not what he was.
1:03:39 Now I you know, you read a lot of people saying he was never a good leader.
1:03:42 I'm like no, he was.
1:03:44 Just cuz you didn't see it.
1:03:46 You didn't hear it.
1:03:46 Oh, it's they say that because they never won.
1:03:48 Cuz they Right.
1:03:49 But they were never in the room when he tears a strip
1:03:51 out of me for not being very good and demanding more.
1:03:54 Like he he he has a real sense of that.
1:03:57 So I think his title for Matt specifically,
1:04:00 it's it's sort of clear where he what he's going to do.
1:04:03 He's not.
1:04:04 And now while he is going to, you know,
1:04:05 have conversations about transactions and players,
1:04:08 he's not talking about depth charts who the Milwaukee Admirals
1:04:11 might have in their third line right winger for a P.
1:04:13 Like, he's not doing that to start.
1:04:15 He might get there, but to start, he's like,
1:04:17 how do we make it so this room functions
1:04:20 better in a manner that he believes a winning
1:04:24 room has to operate and I think he is
1:04:25 very equipped and experienced to have those kind of conversations.
1:04:30 So quickly, quickly I want to ask you guys because you can answer this.
1:04:34 You guys have both been in that room.
1:04:35 Noodles, you've been in your own rooms.
1:04:38 He's no longer the former player, though, right?
1:04:43 Like he can't pull Matthews aside and say, "Hey, we're just two captains.
1:04:46 Let's grab a beer and talk as players." He's not that anymore.
1:04:48 Why can't he?
1:04:49 Cuz he's not.
1:04:50 He's technically Matthew's boss now.
1:04:52 Or he's at he's he's in the executive office.
1:04:54 What I'm getting is part of the reason is why he's
1:04:56 there is to go and grab a guy and have a coffee,
1:04:59 have a beer, and say, "Let's let's talk hockey." He can blend that.
1:05:02 That's what I'm I guess that's what I'm asking you.
1:05:04 I'm asking you to play the role of Matthews and Willie.
1:05:07 Do you look at Do you think they look at him differently
1:05:10 as is he a confidant or is he going
1:05:12 back to tell Chica and them and saying, "Hey,
1:05:15 Austin just told me we got problems in the room." And it's like,
1:05:17 well, you're no longer Matt's the guy who you're not a player anymore.
1:05:21 That's my That's what I'm getting at.
1:05:22 He's got to shed the I'm the former player because he's he's an executive now.
1:05:27 You don't think Dave Puland in Ottawa who is an executive.
1:05:30 He's an assistant GM.
1:05:31 You don't think he goes down, has a coffee,
1:05:33 grabs a guy, and says, "You know that play last night?"
1:05:35 I'm not saying he wouldn't do that.
1:05:36 I'm saying, do you think Brady speaks to him
1:05:39 as the player Dave Puland or as the manager Dave?
1:05:43 It's a very different conversation.
1:05:45 I think it's just hockey people talking.
1:05:47 I don't think when somebody comes down like that, you're like,
1:05:49 "Oh god, it's it's not like the head coach where you're like,
1:05:52 "What does this guy have to say?" It's just people talking hockey.
1:05:56 Can he mentor them?
1:05:57 There's an element of trust that has to be there
1:05:59 and and not confidentiality,
1:06:02 but understanding that if I'm going to be frank with you,
1:06:04 you're not going to hold it against me if you don't hear something you like.
1:06:07 Otherwise, I'm not going to say anything to you.
1:06:08 I think that's fair.
1:06:10 Yeah.
1:06:10 But I do think blending executive, assistant, whatever his title is,
1:06:14 and what he's bringing in experience is as a former player.
1:06:18 He's not bringing in experience of running for London.
1:06:22 Yeah.
1:06:21 Right.
1:06:21 Like he's he's been there.
1:06:24 He's been under the lights.
1:06:25 Has is do has gone through what you're going through.
1:06:27 And maybe having that conversation, I get it.
1:06:29 Different era, but I get it can help him in that regard.
1:06:32 So So we'll see.
1:06:33 But that's where I was going to go.
1:06:34 Do you think that, you know,
1:06:36 him coming in and observing, but having been in the chair,
1:06:39 being being the captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs,
1:06:42 understanding the weight of things that carry in this market,
1:06:47 you can have that bond with Austin Matthews,
1:06:49 but he has to look at it through a different
1:06:52 lens as we all do as former players where,
1:06:55 you know, I try and look at it like 2026, not 1999 or 2004.
1:07:00 So Matt's going to have to adjust, but it might be subtle things is like,
1:07:04 "What are you doing there?" or "Why are you guys wearing that?" or "Why are you
1:07:07 See, that's what I'm talking about.
1:07:08 It's not just, hey Austin, how do you lead?
1:07:11 How do you get get people to follow you?
1:07:12 When you get run over by a neon knee,
1:07:14 how do we make sure everyone jumps in there?" Right?
1:07:16 Some of that, but it might be as simple as, hey,
1:07:18 when we take a bus to the airport,
1:07:20 this is like, hey, when we go get to a place on the road,
1:07:24 why aren't we eating dinners together?
1:07:25 Hey, why are there so many middle managers hanging around the practice rink?
1:07:30 we got to cut that out.
1:07:31 Like, you know, just tang like data value that that maybe
1:07:35 has slipped away from way he sees it to the way
1:07:38 it's been recently and all-encompassing and all those kind
1:07:42 of things is that's where he will probably set his sights.
1:07:45 What do you make of the report from Chris Johnston that Austin Matthews wants
1:07:50 I fell out of my chair like was that not surprising you guys?
1:07:54 Well, Johnny, I was saying you can't let somebody say
1:07:59 get rid of assets and do this and that and then I'm going to sit back
1:08:01 on my couch and make an assessment of it and if I still don't like it,
1:08:04 I'm still going to leave.
1:08:05 You can't run, you can't operate business like that.
1:08:08 It's an impossible situation because you could do a bunch
1:08:10 of stuff and what if he doesn't like it?
1:08:12 What are you going to do?
1:08:13 Bring him in the room and have the guy running the team?
1:08:15 Can't do that either.
1:08:17 My my what threw me off was not that he might leave.
1:08:20 I think that's whether it's Conor McDavid,
1:08:22 whether it's Quinn Hughes, whether it's Austin Matthews,
1:08:25 if they don't like what they're seeing and they want to go somewhere,
1:08:27 I I think we sort of get that.
1:08:29 But when I when I read that it might be for next fall,
1:08:32 I'm like, excuse me, next fall.
1:08:35 What what could have to happen or not happen
1:08:37 this summer that would force him into a spot where,
1:08:40 yeah, I'm not, you know, I want to get traded now.
1:08:42 Well, if that's your mandate,
1:08:43 you're basically saying you're leaving because there's nothing they
1:08:45 can do with the situation they're in to make themselves.
1:08:47 This is where this where my head goes.
1:08:49 I'm like, well, wait a second.
1:08:50 So, there's something that Austin and his camp clearly
1:08:52 sees that he wants the team to do.
1:08:55 Is it feasible that the team is able to do that
1:08:59 right in the next 4 months?
1:09:00 It feels not feasible in the next four months,
1:09:03 especially before you get out there back on the ice
1:09:04 and see what happens with two healthy goalies and,
1:09:07 you know, different kind of defense and maybe a new coach,
1:09:10 whatever is going on this summer.
1:09:11 I I was I that's where I went.
1:09:13 I'm like, wait a sec.
1:09:14 like what what could happen or not happen in the next 4 months
1:09:18 to make him make his mind up.
1:09:20 Okay.
1:09:20 So, if he if they're seeing or he's
1:09:22 seeing I'm saying Matthew's camp seeing something
1:09:25 that they don't like or they feel like
1:09:27 that can't be fixed in the next four months.
1:09:30 Is it wise for them to get out in front of it two years ahead?
1:09:34 And I know like again everybody's it's Connor in Edmonton,
1:09:37 it's Brady in Ottawa, it was Quinn Hughes, it's it's Austin Matthews.
1:09:42 the narrative and I said yesterday is it coo in Tampa and Hayes
1:09:45 made a good point he's won twice right so it's different I
1:09:49 saw Vaselki called up the crew today he wasn't not happy with [laughter]
1:09:52 the Cooper that's fine listen but at the end of the day
1:09:56 doesn't it make sense to try and get ahead of things
1:09:59 and say my intention is this or my but they don't know
1:10:03 I would say no I say it's not in his best interest
1:10:07 right and I I have a lot of time for Austin he's a smart
1:10:08 guy judge everybody but why open this can of worms Even if this is
1:10:12 what you're thinking and you and you and you you want certain changes
1:10:16 to be made or you're you're anticipating
1:10:18 changes might be made that that you'll like,
1:10:21 I don't know, getting it out today only forces this conversation to the public,
1:10:26 right?
1:10:26 And you're going to have this convers if you want to end up going
1:10:28 that direction and you it's December or it's August and you don't like it,
1:10:34 have that conversation then.
1:10:35 I don't know why you need to have
1:10:36 it out there that he's thinking about these things
1:10:39 when you've said it over and over and over, right?
1:10:41 He's got no idea what the team is going to look like next year,
1:10:44 who's coaching it, what changes are going to be made,
1:10:46 the direction they're going to.
1:10:47 The GM has never even spoken to him yet.
1:10:50 He's texted him.
1:10:51 So, I mean, I would just say if it was me,
1:10:53 I'd be like, "Well, we'll just wait and see."
1:10:55 Yeah.
1:10:55 Well, like there's a part of me that wonders if he's taking this out
1:11:00 of a playbook of like a LeBron James
1:11:01 or something where he's putting pressure on the organization.
1:11:05 You know, don't think I'm just automatically happy and coming back.
1:11:09 Pretty rich though for a guy that's making 13 point or $13 million
1:11:12 in a cap system to say you better get a bunch of depth.
1:11:16 That's fair though.
1:11:17 It's normal.
1:11:18 Like I know you might like it's that's what all players are going to think.
1:11:21 Allstar players, a lot of superstars think that way.
1:11:24 You've said it a million times.
1:11:24 How are they going to get rid of the eight players that they need to get rid of?
1:11:28 What if he's what if it's not even the Leafs,
1:11:31 it's that he's he's looking at somewhere else he wants to play.
1:11:36 Like what if it's not really about looking at the Leafs and saying,
1:11:39 "I need a new coach.
1:11:40 I need new defenseman.
1:11:41 What if he's getting out and he's like, "Actually,
1:11:43 I kind of like what's going on over there."
1:11:45 And it's not about the Leafs as much as it's I don't
1:11:48 know if I'm coming back because I want to play somewhere else.
1:11:50 Talk to XY
1:11:51 as opposed to you haven't done enough.
1:11:53 Yeah.
1:11:53 Because like you look at through the lens of McDavid, it's like
1:11:58 you I want to win like right here, right now.
1:12:00 What are you going to do?
1:12:01 I'm putting pressure on you to make sure maybe it's got to be a new coach.
1:12:04 Maybe it's got to be
1:12:05 and the sacrifice he made to empower them.
1:12:07 Here's the thing.
1:12:07 Has Austin Matthews ever said, "My whole goal is to win a Stanley Cup here."
1:12:12 Never heard the words.
1:12:13 I've never heard him ever say that.
1:12:15 Like No, he hasn't, Johnny.
1:12:16 Trust me, we've like I've never heard
1:12:19 We have boots on the ground on this show now.
1:12:22 like, "Hey, is your goal to win the obvious every player, but I've never like
1:12:27 he doesn't go out and say it loudly."
1:12:29 Not McDavidlike, but McDavid's a psycho about winning.
1:12:32 Like writing players tribune articles.
1:12:35 He might be a psycho about saying he wants to win.
1:12:37 I I don't know if Connor cares more about winning than Austin Matthews.
1:12:41 He just is willing to put it out there publicly on fair comment.
1:12:45 But what I'm saying is I've never heard or seen the fire
1:12:50 that I've seen in other players.
1:12:52 And Austin is very measured and that's it.
1:12:54 It's his right to be, you know, Willy's year end was 93 seconds.
1:12:58 Dry subtles was 15 minutes.
1:13:00 So Leon put on a clinic, too.
1:13:01 And Leon put a clinic on, but it's like, hey, we're on notice here.
1:13:05 We want to win.
1:13:06 You know, we're bang whatever it it's.
1:13:09 It's apples and oranges because one team's been
1:13:11 at the finals the two years in a row, the other team hasn't.
1:13:14 But at the end of the day,
1:13:15 I would love to hear Austin Matthews step out of his comfort zone going,
1:13:19 I'm winning here, or I want to win here.
1:13:21 Maybe it's it's just could do that now.
1:13:23 Two years ago, it would have made sense
1:13:24 for him to say that this summer to say that.
1:13:27 Is there any scenario where Matthews and McDavid
1:13:31 could be conspiring to make a super team somewhere?
1:13:34 Is that even possible with their dollars?
1:13:37 It depends how little they will they're willing to take.
1:13:40 Well, they're both signed for two years.
1:13:41 There's one that's
1:13:43 in the next two years.
1:13:44 I'm just saying right now, is there any way that they could find themselves?
1:13:47 I think Anaheim could take them both on with shedding some money.
1:13:52 No, Anaheim's got Anaheim's going to have
1:13:54 massive contracts coming up on their own.
1:13:55 Excuse me.
1:13:56 [laughter] Yeah, but I'm Yeah, no kidding.
1:13:58 Like Carl like Senica is going to get paid and
1:14:01 Lome like he's already kicking in or whatever.
1:14:04 But but at the end of the day, you're right.
1:14:06 There could be conspiring.
1:14:08 There's no guar like I I keep saying this there's no guarantee.
1:14:12 You start chasing it.
1:14:13 That's that's dangerous.
1:14:14 When you think about way back Iggy, but you go to Iggy, I go to Kujo.
1:14:19 He chased it to Detroit thinking where else would I have a better great chance.
1:14:22 He didn't get any further than David the Leafs.
1:14:24 I think about when Tamu and Paul Korea went to Colorado, right?
1:14:27 And for like a million bucks and like, okay, loaded them up.
1:14:30 They didn't win there.
1:14:31 There's a danger in thinking you can just pick
1:14:32 the best spot because the best spot in the NHL,
1:14:35 the best team has what?
1:14:36 a 18% chance of winning.
1:14:38 Well, that's a great question right now.
1:14:39 Like, forget, we don't have to use one of these players in particular,
1:14:42 but let's say you're just a a great player in the league
1:14:44 and you have the pick of the pick of the litter.
1:14:47 Which team would you choose?
1:14:49 Next year for Yes.
1:14:51 I guess if you have if you have you you're looking at it saying,
1:14:54 I want to win a cup in the as quickly as possible.
1:14:56 Right now, you could pick any team.
1:14:58 There's no denying it.
1:14:58 I'd either go to Florida,
1:15:00 rejoin the Florida Panthers for next season or the Colorado Avalanche.
1:15:04 Those are your two teams?
1:15:06 Yeah.
1:15:06 understanding that as good a Colorado as good as Colorado is,
1:15:11 we don't know if that goalending is going to hold up, man.
1:15:14 Florida doesn't have a goalie next year.
1:15:17 Yeah, that's what I'm saying.
1:15:17 Is it those two teams?
1:15:18 I'm picking Colorado because they're the best team
1:15:20 right now and Nate's there and Kale's there.
1:15:22 So, you're not taking Florida?
1:15:24 I might.
1:15:24 You said we were teammates at the start of the segment.
1:15:26 Ham and eggs.
1:15:27 [laughter]
1:15:27 Yeah.
1:15:27 No, I I I get it.
1:15:29 But you're not in sync.
1:15:30 I Florida, listen, Florida, there's a chance that they they they did
1:15:34 their thing and it's now it's it's over.
1:15:37 Like it I know everyone just thinks they get right back on the horse.
1:15:40 I don't know.
1:15:40 They're old.
1:15:41 They've all got paid
1:15:42 like Anaheim.
1:15:42 Like I'm serious.
1:15:44 What about Montreal?
1:15:45 Next year or Montreal?
1:15:46 Montreal is high on
1:15:47 Montreal's got so many good players coming and all their players
1:15:50 are signed for cheap that they can afford other good players
1:15:52 and they got two kids in the minors
1:15:54 in Lavel that Nstrom and Rinbacher and Ha is coming.
1:15:57 age like they've got in every position Russian kid too
1:16:01 and Fowler like the the crazy thing is Dobish is playing amazing.
1:16:06 He might be hack to price keep them both.
1:16:09 You don't have to get rid of them.
1:16:10 That's right.
1:16:11 I I if you're looking at it for next year, you're right.
1:16:13 Anaheim maybe takes a step even more and does things in the offseason.
1:16:17 San Jose might be a force next year and go and I think
1:16:21 they're further away but they'll get there
1:16:22 eventually but they're further away from now.
1:16:23 But like the point being there's no guarantee.
1:16:26 You said it's 18%.
1:16:27 It might even be lower based on
1:16:30 but everyone wants to possibly jump and go somewhere else and that's the point.
1:16:33 I just you know like Vegas Vegas is consistently competitive.
1:16:37 It's funny.
1:16:38 Carolina's consistently competitive.
1:16:40 No one ever mentions them.
1:16:41 Like it just I'm not going to Carolina
1:16:43 because they haven't won.
1:16:45 Yeah.
1:16:44 I understand that.
1:16:45 But
1:16:46 they're a damn good team and really well coached.
1:16:49 Yeah.
1:16:49 And there's there's it seems like Am I the minority on the on the panel here?
1:16:53 What
1:16:53 I found Carolina I say this properly as a road
1:16:57 city underwhelming like it's I didn't sense a lot of
1:17:02 watch yourself this guy lived here for 10 years.
1:17:04 You're not a fan of Raleigh, North Carolina.
1:17:06 I think when you see nobody talks about Carolina,
1:17:08 I'm not sure if the around the league guys like I can't wait
1:17:10 to go to that road trip to the place I want to be.
1:17:12 We're staying by the highway across from a mall.
1:17:14 There's there's a PF change.
1:17:16 There's a PF change is the highlight, right?
1:17:19 Yeah.
1:17:18 For some game teams experiences.
1:17:20 I'm not saying they don't have great golf courses and communities,
1:17:23 but but cost of living there's cheap.
1:17:25 And the the the almighty one thing is they win.
1:17:29 They win.
1:17:30 And the program doesn't seem like there's a bunch of egos there.
1:17:32 It's just go play.
1:17:33 And and that's the thing like if you someone write
1:17:36 writing in with a very good point that right now
1:17:39 Mitch Mner and Quinn Hughes took their destiny into their own
1:17:43 hands and they're still playing right like Mner said
1:17:46 I'm out of here and I'm going to Vegas
1:17:47 and he's up one nothing in his series and Quinn Hugh
1:17:49 says I want out of here and he's down one
1:17:51 nothing in his series but still they're both very comfortable.
1:17:54 Tell you what, boys.
1:17:54 It's a dangerous It's a dangerous game moving forward for the league, man.
1:17:59 Like, if you look at what's going to happen
1:18:00 in Canadian markets here in the next three years,
1:18:04 there might be some dark times.
1:18:05 If if this is the new way of the league where it's like, well, no thanks.
1:18:10 You're you're right.
1:18:10 Yet they It's all over different levels.
1:18:13 Brian Cutter Gochi.
1:18:14 I'm not going to Philadelphia.
1:18:16 Screw that.
1:18:16 They meet his demands to go into Anaheim.
1:18:18 Like we are literally entering a time where it's the halves
1:18:22 and have nots and it's where these kids want to play
1:18:24 at any age or any level where it's going to be
1:18:27 there's some markets but and Kevin Adams said it best.
1:18:30 We got taxes.
1:18:31 We don't have palm trees and it's like if you
1:18:34 don't have a good team like they do right now.
1:18:35 What the hell are you going to do?
1:18:37 That's the good team is where Billy Garren said the hockeyy's got to be good.
1:18:40 That's the part that trumps everything.
1:18:42 The good team.
1:18:43 You got to have a good team.
1:18:44 Bad taxes.
1:18:45 If you're standing up contender, bad taxes not a big deal.
1:18:48 I know.
1:18:48 But is the job of getting to a good
1:18:50 team that much more difficult because of those elements, Johnny?
1:18:53 Although we still have teams still have
1:18:54 seven years control of all their players.
1:18:56 Yeah.
1:18:56 Look at what Buffalo had to go through to get where they're at today.
1:18:59 Ryan O'Reilly, get me the hell out of here.
1:19:01 Jack Eel, get me the hell out of here.
1:19:03 You go you Reinhardt, you name it.
1:19:05 Yeah, Reinhardt, Bonour.
1:19:06 There's a lot of guys exiting stage left.
1:19:09 It's difficult to recover.
1:19:10 And they and the results spoke for themselves.
1:19:12 I think if they had a better run organization in the moment,
1:19:14 those guys might have been more inclined
1:19:15 to stay because they'd be winning more often.
1:19:17 Like it's I like teams have pressure to win.
1:19:20 They have pressure financially.
1:19:21 They have pressure for their own competitive spirit.
1:19:23 They have pressure for their players.
1:19:25 And I don't have a problem with a player who's beholden
1:19:27 to a team for seven years out of out of their entry- level deal,
1:19:30 whatever it is, and say, "I'm five years in, we have no chance of winning.
1:19:34 I would like to go somewhere to win." I'm not offended by that by a player.
1:19:38 I'm like,
1:19:40 I'm not either.
1:19:40 if they if they just get used to it and they don't like it and they're it's
1:19:44 I I appreciate you give him a chance like cutter goce gave Philly no chance
1:19:47 but I think that was cuz they wouldn't put him in the NHL leaving school
1:19:50 having went right to the NHL I could I would have picked a different team if I
1:19:53 wasn't from the NHL but yeah I give him a chance and then if you don't like it
1:19:59 keep in mind every player we're talking about
1:20:01 has put a decade in with their current team right Matthews McDavidy
1:20:07 here's the other thing too nobody mentions Hellbuck
1:20:10 had some comments at the end of the year.
1:20:11 This is going to be another spicy spicy situation.
1:20:14 Horniest off season in a long time.
1:20:16 If you want your goalie for Florida,
1:20:21 why are we just It just drives me nuts where it's like a pissy
1:20:24 press conference at the end of the year and it's like new destination, new home.
1:20:28 Well, that's us.
1:20:29 We're talking about it.
1:20:30 But that's
1:20:31 Well, Johnny said it.
1:20:32 No, we all said it.
1:20:34 I'm just there watching.
1:20:35 Wait, hang on.
1:20:35 But did do we listen to what he said?
1:20:36 It wasn't a ringing endorsement for I want to be back here for seven more years.
1:20:39 What the hell did he say, Johnny?
1:20:41 It was just it's like he said basically
1:20:43 get ready cuz Winnipeg people are coming after you.
1:20:46 Go ahead and True.
1:20:47 Winnipeg people are just as afraid as people in Toronto,
1:20:51 Edmonton, Ottawa, you name it.
1:20:53 They as the people that were in Vancouver because
1:20:56 you notice the common denominator there, Jamie.
1:20:59 All Canadian markets.
1:21:00 Well, you just said no.
1:21:01 Philly, go chase Buffalo.
1:21:03 Left Calgary.
1:21:03 Matthew Kachchuck left Calgary.
1:21:05 Quinn Hughes out of Vancouver.
1:21:07 And now what's going on now?
1:21:08 Canadian markets is good.
1:21:09 Which one of those teams is good that those players left?
1:21:14 Calgary was pretty good when those two guys left there, Johnny.
1:21:16 Calgary was for good with Matthew.
1:21:17 Yes, that's fair.
1:21:18 They won the division.
1:21:19 Calgary, I think, is going to win the
1:21:22 the lottery tonight.
1:21:23 Calgary.
1:21:23 Well, this is the the thing about the Canadian markets for the last decade
1:21:29 is they have had more superstars than maybe any other decade.
1:21:34 Or you got to go back to the 80s.
1:21:36 Like think about the heart winners.
1:21:38 McDavid, Dry, Subtle, Hella Buck,
1:21:41 Matthews.
1:21:43 Yeah.
1:21:42 Um Quinn Hughes won a Norris, right?
1:21:44 Like you you've got you had you had superstars.
1:21:47 Yeah.
1:21:48 Eric Carlson in Ottawa prior to leaving where he won multiple Norris trophies.
1:21:51 You know, if you look at the last 10 years,
1:21:54 there have been a lot of superstars playing
1:21:57 in Canadian markets and none of the teams
1:22:01 could win.
1:22:01 I mean, Edmonton got to Exactly.
1:22:03 Price like Edmonton got to two cup finals.
1:22:06 Montreal got to a cup final.
1:22:08 And that's it.
1:22:09 It's not like they were they they didn't have the star power.
1:22:12 It's that they couldn't figure out the rest of it.
1:22:15 Y which was not a Canadian thing.
1:22:17 They didn't draft properly or they got impatient or they didn't
1:22:19 have the right coach or this is the challenge of pro sports.
1:22:22 Exactly.
1:22:23 It's tough.
1:22:23 Like you get players, you got to make it work.
1:22:25 There's timelines.
1:22:26 There's pressure points.
1:22:27 Noodles might want to go back and play in Alberta.
1:22:29 I might want to get back to play in Toronto.
1:22:31 some guy might want to go back and play in Florida.
1:22:33 Like everyone's got their own preferences and you got
1:22:35 to figure out how that works around the league.
1:22:36 Well, and the two guys we just referenced, Quinn Hughes left Vancouver.
1:22:39 They're the worst team in the league by a mile and Mitch
1:22:42 left and the Leafs were the fifth worst team in the league.
1:22:45 Now, it was a it was a different context
1:22:47 to the Leafs scenario and his situation was much
1:22:50 more that wasn't a Canadian thing that was very
1:22:52 specific to his history with the Leafs and all that.
1:22:54 The Toronto thing
1:22:55 very much so.
1:22:56 But those two guys are they're still playing
1:22:59 and the teams they left in their dust are a mess.
1:23:01 But let's just big hypothetical.
1:23:04 The Leafs are really really good whatever the summer
1:23:07 happens like they get off to a great start.
1:23:09 Do you think Austin's running out of town if they're really good next year?
1:23:12 I don't I don't think so.
1:23:13 Probably not.
1:23:14 I don't think so.
1:23:15 He's going to he's probably What do you think his reasoning is then?
1:23:19 Do you think it's like is it the he wants a new coach?
1:23:22 I I don't think it's possible that he's like,
1:23:25 I'm not coming back if Craig Barub is the coach.
1:23:27 My opinion on Austin is I don't think he
1:23:29 and his camp are trying to call the shots.
1:23:32 I don't think he's saying we want this defenseman,
1:23:34 we need this coach, I want to play this way.
1:23:37 I think he just wants to play on a winner and around good players.
1:23:42 The idea that you put pressure on the Leafs,
1:23:44 you don't need to watch the presser yesterday.
1:23:47 There's tons of pressure on those guys and they understand keeping Austin,
1:23:50 keeping Willie and keeping them engaged with a potentially
1:23:54 winning team is is part of their job.
1:23:55 So I don't know if it's a pressure on those guys like the team's no good.
1:23:59 What is what pressure is that often will leave if they if it's not?
1:24:04 How you going to make the team good?
1:24:05 You're a smart guy.
1:24:06 Tell me how they're going to make the I I didn't say how they're going to.
1:24:08 I just said the pressure is that they have to
1:24:11 like
1:24:11 Okay, but I said you're a smart guy.
1:24:12 What would you do?
1:24:13 The owner of the team has said we want to keep Austin Matthews around.
1:24:16 So, the president hires a GM that is going
1:24:19 to commit to a plan to try to keep Austin around.
1:24:21 How do you do that?
1:24:22 I mean, I think you have to change the defense
1:24:25 and you have to change the way they play.
1:24:27 How you do that?
1:24:28 I mean, I you got to get very creative.
1:24:30 Whether it's free agency, value fines,
1:24:32 taking advantage of financial flexibility,
1:24:34 taking on other bad contracts that you think will be less bad for you than
1:24:37 they are for the current team by getting
1:24:38 rid of one of your bad contracts, right?
1:24:41 All of which are risky and not guaranteed to work out.
1:24:43 But to think you're gonna go, "Okay, we'll sign R.
1:24:45 We'll sign Radish and Tuck.
1:24:47 We're good to go." That's not gonna work either.
1:24:51 Yeah.
1:24:50 So, you got to be creative and aggressive and you got
1:24:53 to change the way you play cuz you got to play faster.
1:24:55 They're slow last year.
1:24:58 Well,
1:24:57 you want what they can do?
1:24:58 Get fast.
1:24:59 Start there.
1:25:00 Look at the teams that are good.
1:25:02 They all can wheel.
1:25:03 It's speed.
1:25:05 And the young teams now are not afraid of the moment.
1:25:07 No, they're they're they're here.
1:25:09 They're not.
1:25:09 and and and the teams that we think too, Detroit,
1:25:13 regardless them missing, they're they're knocking at the door, too.
1:25:17 They might have a better year, they might have a better off season,
1:25:20 but you've got to make hay in your own division,
1:25:23 too, because Florida's got to figure it out.
1:25:25 They got to get healthy and they might be right back there.
1:25:28 The Leafs got to figure it out.
1:25:29 You know, Ottawa's going to have changes.
1:25:31 I guarantee you, every team in the Atlantic is going to go,
1:25:33 we need a little bit more here.
1:25:35 I would just Okay, real quick.
1:25:38 Toronto returns the exact same group, exact same whatever.
1:25:42 Fill in the guys who leave for free agency.
1:25:44 How many points they get next year?
1:25:46 Same coach, same everything.
1:25:48 85.
1:25:48 Thank you.
1:25:49 88.
1:25:52 Mhm.
1:25:51 Not 102, but they're not 72 either.
1:25:54 Like the exact like they're working from a terrible, terrible year.
1:25:57 Terrible year.
1:25:58 Everything that could have gone wrong went wrong.
1:26:01 They're not as far from being not a cup winner,
1:26:04 a playoff contender as it feels today.
1:26:09 Yes, I I would agree with that.
1:26:11 Everything went against them last year.
1:26:12 A lot of it was self-inflicted, too.
1:26:14 You had injuries, your goalending wasn't there.
1:26:17 They had the year before the goalending and masked a lot.
1:26:21 Mhm.
1:26:20 So, the your goalending, let's assume both goalenders.
1:26:23 They got to decide which which two they want.
1:26:25 Well, yeah.
1:26:26 That's the other thing's got to figure out.
1:26:27 Well, that's another way to get better.
1:26:29 O, you trade one or two of the goalies, right?
1:26:32 You got four that are good.
1:26:33 Okay.
1:26:33 Well, what's that going to get you in return?
1:26:35 Well, Joseph Wall will get you a good top six.
1:26:38 Okay.
1:26:38 And then you got Anthony Stolars as your number one goalender.
1:26:41 And Hill to be and h to be like it it just you're going to have to
1:26:44 not perfect, but what are you going to do?
1:26:45 Like you have to take from your areas of strength
1:26:48 and try to address your areas of weakness.
1:26:51 Yeah.
1:26:50 Which will hurt your strength areas, but
1:26:53 Yeah.
1:26:52 This is how it works because you can't
1:26:54 have everything because you can't get those players.
1:26:56 And in reality, you got to chip away and chip away.
1:26:58 You got to have a great draft.
1:27:00 Here's the Gota have a great draft.
1:27:03 What about the New York Rangers philosophy where they're
1:27:05 just going to say to guys you're you're leaving.
1:27:07 Are they going to do that with certain players?
1:27:10 Sure.
1:27:12 Yeah.
1:27:11 The Barkley Gudro like waiverss will see you.
1:27:14 It stinks.
1:27:15 But if you're running the team like listen, Noodles, you got no move protection.
1:27:19 We love you.
1:27:20 You've been a great player.
1:27:21 It's time for us to go a different direction.
1:27:23 Where would you like to go to?
1:27:24 Can we work together?
1:27:25 Noodle says, "I don't want to go anywhere." I'm like, "Okay,
1:27:26 well, you're not going to play the rest of this season.
1:27:28 We're going to put you on waiverss." Yeah.
1:27:29 If you don't have if you have no trade, not no move.
1:27:31 Yeah.
1:27:32 I don't want to do that.
1:27:32 I want You're an NHL player.
1:27:33 I don't want to do that.
1:27:34 Work with us.
1:27:35 Yeah.
1:27:35 But if we if you're not willing to, that is your right.
1:27:37 You'll be in the Toronto organization, but you're not going to play any games.
1:27:40 Yeah.
1:27:40 You'll be with the Marlies.
1:27:41 You'll be with the Marlies.
1:27:42 Guess who guess what?
1:27:43 Noodle's going to change his mind real quick.
1:27:44 And it's a jerk move.
1:27:45 I get it's hard.
1:27:46 It's cutthroat.
1:27:47 People get angry,
1:27:48 but you can have a more reasonable conversation than that quick one.
1:27:52 But that sort of idea, you got to explore all of it.
1:27:54 Oh, all of it.
1:27:55 Be cutthroat, too.
1:27:56 That's the thing.
1:27:57 Like I've said, a manager has to be a sociopath sometimes
1:28:00 and and not have that emotion and fall in love with the players.
1:28:03 This is a business.
1:28:04 When the player and the agent have the gun to your head going,
1:28:07 "We want an extra 500 grand times 5 years or whatever,
1:28:12 they're they're not they'll use it's not personal.
1:28:14 If it's if it's within the rules of the CBA, you're not breaking any rules.
1:28:18 You got to go down that road if you have to." All right, Johnny.
1:28:20 Who do you think wins the lottery tonight?
1:28:22 Any conspiracy theories?
1:28:24 Chicago.
1:28:25 Chicago.
1:28:24 I got Calgary.
1:28:26 I do.
1:28:26 I don't think Chicago at all with a dream.
1:28:30 Oh, I have a dream speech.
1:28:32 That's why I wore my blue suit.
1:28:34 You got the Leafs winning tonight.
1:28:35 I really do because I did the draft lottery at trade center.
1:28:39 Oh, yeah.
1:28:40 That's right.
1:28:40 That's right.
1:28:40 And they won it simulator.
1:28:42 It was fixed.
1:28:43 That's what I was told.
1:28:44 That would be a conspiracy theory.
1:28:45 It was not [laughter] fixed.
1:28:46 What a conspiracy theory.
1:28:47 Don't you think, guys, before we go,
1:28:49 the worst thing for the Leafs to happen this year
1:28:51 in this draft lottery is for them to stay where they are.
1:28:55 Get first, get sixth.
1:28:57 Yes.
1:28:57 Don't stay at five.
1:28:58 I would agree.
1:28:58 That is the worst possible outcome.
1:29:00 Either win it or just get rid of it or pay pay the price and move along
1:29:04 and adjust in the future.
1:29:06 Yeah, I think which means they probably which they'll stay.
1:29:09 Yeah, probably fifth tonight.
1:29:10 But maybe that's the best player in the draft, right?
1:29:13 Morgan Riley's draft.
1:29:14 He went fifth.
1:29:14 He was the best player in the top five.
1:29:16 Carson Carl's defenseman.
1:29:18 Okay.
1:29:18 Well, maybe he's there.
1:29:19 Maybe that Reed kid's there at five.
1:29:21 Who knows?
1:29:22 All right, Johnny.
1:29:22 We'll catch you tonight.
1:29:23 Hi, fellas.
1:29:24 Senior.
1:29:24 There he is.
1:29:25 Mike Johnson, our TSN hockey analyst.
1:29:27 Confirm or deny coming up.
1:29:28 We're going to hit the draft lottery ourselves.
1:29:30 We're going to spin it.
1:29:30 Three spins coming up.
1:29:32 Overdrive continues up on YouTube Five.
1:33:40 NASCAR action here on TSN and TSN Plus.
1:33:49 Now, back to Overdrive with Haze Noodles and the Odog.
1:33:58 I can neither confirm or deny that uh that that this is in fact the signal.
1:34:02 Austin trades [music] Andrew Ray Croft to Toronto
1:34:06 in exchange for the rights to Tuka Ras.
1:34:10 It's been my honor and a privilege to serve
1:34:12 as the general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs Hockey Club.
1:34:15 It's time for confirm or deny.
1:34:18 Do you regret giving all those gentlemen the no trades or no movement clauses?
1:34:23 I I I can neither confirm or deny that.
1:34:25 I can't confirm or deny.
1:34:27 All right, confirm or deny here.
1:34:29 Brought to you by Boston Pizza.
1:34:31 All right, statements are made.
1:34:33 We either confirm them or we deny them.
1:34:35 Let's uh fire them up here because we're going to get to the draft lottery.
1:34:38 We're going to hit it three times on the show.
1:34:40 Confirm or deny.
1:34:41 Sundine and Chica will remain a package
1:34:44 deal throughout their tenure with the Leafs.
1:34:47 So, it's not as if one's leaving and one's staying in the future.
1:34:51 I'm denying that.
1:34:51 showed up together.
1:34:52 They're leaving together.
1:34:53 Not a chance.
1:34:54 One will go before the other one.
1:34:56 You think so?
1:34:59 Absolutely.
1:34:59 What do you think?
1:34:59 This is fantasy land where guys very chummy yesterday, right?
1:35:02 Two cows from the Memorial Cup.
1:35:04 They're friends.
1:35:04 I
1:35:06 I've always envisioned Matt's like
1:35:10 he's been out of the game for 17 years.
1:35:12 Probably has a boatload of money in his pocket.
1:35:14 Young family.
1:35:17 Like,
1:35:16 you think there's a chance he point I'm going back to.
1:35:20 It's a lot of work here.
1:35:21 That's a better question.
1:35:22 Who is more likely to to last longer?
1:35:26 I think it's Chica.
1:35:28 See, I think it's Matts because I think he's got way more security.
1:35:30 If Chica is the guy at the top, as long as he wants to do it,
1:35:34 if Cha has the last vote on what's going on, then
1:35:36 he's got more skin in the game if it goes wrong.
1:35:39 Right.
1:35:39 Like Sundine's insulated to an extent where he can say,
1:35:42 "Hey, well, John made the ultimate call here." Yeah.
1:35:45 Right.
1:35:45 where Matts may have actually the perfect gig
1:35:49 where he's he's got skin in the game.
1:35:52 He's going to have a voice, but he's the ultimate ambassador, too.
1:35:56 And Exactly.
1:35:56 And he works on the culture and the locker room.
1:35:59 And I'll take I'll tell you where he's taking
1:36:01 some heat is this the the Shane Don stuff.
1:36:04 Like there's people that are claiming that and I
1:36:06 want to find out the story for myself firsthand.
1:36:09 Just the treatment of Shane Don like Paul Bessinette is just beside himself
1:36:13 about Chica and Don in Arizona you mean?
1:36:15 Yes.
1:36:16 And Shane has been a part of the front office here for a few years in Toronto.
1:36:20 He's not going to be caught wind of this.
1:36:22 It's just like see you later.
1:36:23 Well, I think Don's contract was up in June or whatever.
1:36:27 I don't think he's sticking around.
1:36:28 They're probably going to You would allow Chica to get his own team involved.
1:36:34 So he'll have to evaluate who's in place
1:36:37 already for AGMs and people throughout the organization
1:36:40 and say I want to keep them or I want to move on from them.
1:36:43 So you know whether Shane Don and him have a good or bad relationship.
1:36:48 Sounds like Shane Don is probably going to move on anyways.
1:36:50 Wasn't he interviewing for the Vancouver?
1:36:51 Yeah, I think in Vancouver.
1:36:52 Pierre Dorian apparently out there in Vancouver.
1:36:55 Yes.
1:36:55 The rebuild is over.
1:36:56 I love Pierre Dorian.
1:36:57 It's a great guy.
1:36:58 I really like Pierre, too.
1:36:59 Yeah.
1:36:59 And listen, he made some like Stutzel and Sanderson in that draft
1:37:03 and Ridley Greg in the first round same draft.
1:37:06 That's an unbelievable draft.
1:37:08 Three really good players.
1:37:10 Unbelievable draft.
1:37:11 Yeah.
1:37:11 And people think about the water bottle throwing and
1:37:14 couple different situations.
1:37:16 There's also one that I It's a meme.
1:37:19 You remember when during COVID there's no nobody
1:37:22 in the stands and you remember he was standing
1:37:25 behind the net behind Kerry Price just [laughter]
1:37:29 we got to find that meme like they we're
1:37:32 I think I don't know if I was calling the game or not or whatever but it
1:37:35 was like why is Pierre just standing
1:37:37 in the corner cuz they had the stands tarped up in the bubble.
1:37:41 Was it in the bubble or was it in Ottawa at that time?
1:37:43 Okay.
1:37:43 Might have just been like
1:37:44 for the 21 season where they were playing in their own rings.
1:37:47 Yeah.
1:37:48 Like there's a there's a scene where he's just standing in the corner
1:37:51 and I think Carrie Price is in net and he's just standing like front row.
1:37:55 It's it's all right.
1:37:56 Well, anyway, I wish him the best cuz I like Absolutely.
1:37:59 Absolutely.
1:38:00 Uh confirm or deny.
1:38:01 Vlatty Jr.
1:38:02 ends the season with 20 plus home runs.
1:38:06 How could you possibly say that right now?
1:38:08 Got two.
1:38:09 I'm confirming it.
1:38:10 I'm denying it.
1:38:11 And I'll bet you a side 500.
1:38:13 Yeah, [laughter] you got it, man.
1:38:18 Lock 500.
1:38:19 He's got I am bullish on this guy getting hot at some point.
1:38:22 I know.
1:38:22 Why does it always get to this when we're waiting around for
1:38:25 It's incredibly frustrating.
1:38:26 Yeah, it's like, "Oh, this guy's going to round in the form.
1:38:28 He's getting close.
1:38:29 He's getting close." Completely unacceptable.
1:38:31 You're getting paid like the top 10 player in the league
1:38:34 and you're the most important bat in the lineup.
1:38:37 Forget his paycheck.
1:38:38 I don't care if he's getting paid a dollar.
1:38:39 He's the most important player on the team.
1:38:41 The most important bat.
1:38:42 They need him with Kirk out.
1:38:43 Barger's been out.
1:38:44 Springer's been out.
1:38:45 They're under 500 again.
1:38:46 They're starting slow.
1:38:47 Yeah.
1:38:47 And let's be Aaron Judge is paid to hit the long ball.
1:38:51 He's paid to hit it out of And he does it all the time.
1:38:53 He does it all the time.
1:38:54 Enough of this exit vo, you know, off the bat.
1:38:58 He hit that one really hard.
1:38:59 It's not good enough.
1:39:00 Not good enough.
1:39:00 It's 20 is I wouldn't say 18 more.
1:39:04 He's got a lot of games left.
1:39:05 I mean, he can basically 120 games.
1:39:09 Yeah, he got 125 plus games.
1:39:12 Tell me he can't hit 18 home runs.
1:39:15 Yeah, he can do that.
1:39:16 I think he he will get redot at some point.
1:39:18 He should do that though for 500 100%.
1:39:21 Again, I don't care about the paycheck just based on talent and ability.
1:39:25 Look what he look how he locked in in the playoffs.
1:39:29 Yeah.
1:39:28 Where that guy was mashing mashing almost.
1:39:31 I told you as every day that goes by, people start forgetting about that.
1:39:35 I understand that.
1:39:36 Like there's other guys in the lineup that are pulling their weight.
1:39:38 Okamoto is is on fire right now.
1:39:42 Absolutely the hottest bat on the team.
1:39:44 It's not Vlatty right now.
1:39:46 Spring her back.
1:39:46 Vlatt's not even in the lineup tonight,
1:39:48 but I it's too early for me to spin off 20 plus.
1:39:54 Ask me again in a month.
1:39:57 When you're But two is two games left.
1:39:59 Yeah.
1:39:59 Then that's a different story.
1:40:02 Yeah.
1:40:01 Confirm or deny.
1:40:02 Yakob Dovish is the best goalie left in the Stanley Cup playoffs.
1:40:07 starting goalie.
1:40:09 I'm gonna confirm that.
1:40:11 Tell me who's better right now.
1:40:12 Frederick Anderson.
1:40:14 Freddy's at the top of the heap for you.
1:40:17 Well, I know Dobish.
1:40:19 I just think Freddy's playing some great hockey.
1:40:22 I I've always said, and you guys have heard me say it, too.
1:40:25 He's a good goalender.
1:40:27 He's just not available.
1:40:28 I'm just going to tell you guys right
1:40:29 this or right now about this, and it's not being negative.
1:40:34 It's not a pessimistic outlook.
1:40:36 I can't buy into Freddy from all of the years that have gone
1:40:40 by where it trends in this direction and then all of a sudden not available.
1:40:46 Either not available or it falls off the tracks
1:40:49 and you're like who is that guy right now?
1:40:51 I I Well, as if he can keep this going, I hope he does.
1:40:54 My old team, the Canes, I hope they go on a heater and they win a cup, whatever.
1:40:59 But he scares the hell out of me what could
1:41:01 be next because it's always the same thing with that guy.
1:41:03 either performance or something happens.
1:41:06 And it's crazy.
1:41:07 Yeah.
1:41:07 I I mean, Dobish has been amazing and and probably who should be at one,
1:41:12 but Anderson hasn't done anything wrong either.
1:41:14 No, I know.
1:41:14 They lost the game.
1:41:16 No, he hasn't.
1:41:16 They haven't lost the game.
1:41:18 Yeah, they're six and0.
1:41:19 Like, you know, you got Freddy at the top.
1:41:22 There's something about Dobish, though, man.
1:41:23 Like, he's Yeah.
1:41:25 And he's Again, it's a weird year because you look at it's Anderson, it's Lion.
1:41:32 Yeah.
1:41:32 Uh it's Darth Vadar.
1:41:34 Ladar's Doal and Carter Hart and Wedgewood and you know it's
1:41:39 like none of these guys are like your typical rockstar goalie.
1:41:43 They're talented and good goalies but
1:41:46 well I mean not some all the guys that you mentioned have probably had
1:41:49 an off game at some point but Dobish has been great and has been great.
1:41:54 Hart's had an off game.
1:41:56 You know, Lion comes in for UPL trying.
1:42:00 Ladar had an off game, I believe, once so far.
1:42:03 Goending and Mini has been Well, yeah, that first game that Well,
1:42:07 now they've gone to Gustoson's going to play tonight, right?
1:42:09 There you go.
1:42:10 So, Walstead, you know, they gave up a nine spot there.
1:42:12 You got to you got to but but I think it's Dobish or or or Freddy.
1:42:19 Well, they might meet in a in a couple of weeks.
1:42:22 Exactly.
1:42:22 All right, final one here.
1:42:23 Confirm or deny rapid fire style.
1:42:25 John Rom and Bryson Dashambo are playing in the PGA Tour in 2027.
1:42:31 Rahm and Bryson on the PGA Tour in 2027.
1:42:36 I totally think they are.
1:42:38 I think they're just those guys are going
1:42:40 to make a phone call and get things done.
1:42:42 Probably Cam Smith, too.
1:42:44 I don't know if he cares enough.
1:42:45 Maybe that angry little ant [laughter] from England.
1:42:48 Oh, Terrell Hatton.
1:42:49 I'd like to see him back in the That's what I would do if I was a commissioner.
1:42:52 It's like you guys, some of you guys sued us.
1:42:54 Some of you guys left for the money.
1:42:56 We're going to handpick who we want back.
1:42:58 All left for the money.
1:42:59 Well, I get it.
1:42:59 But I would just handp pick and say these guys are
1:43:02 going to have an avenue back and the rest of you guys,
1:43:04 you have a very difficult road.
1:43:07 Screw it.
1:43:07 Just make up your own rules.
1:43:09 Yeah.
1:43:09 Well, you can't.
1:43:09 It's your tour.
1:43:10 Yeah.
1:43:10 It's your tour.
1:43:11 You want the product to be the best
1:43:12 and you want to be more forgiving for certain guys.
1:43:15 Yeah.
1:43:15 Well, now you see Rom's worked out a deal with the DP World Tour.
1:43:18 Shocking when he realizes there's a chance he's got nowhere else to play coming.
1:43:24 Reed did the same thing.
1:43:25 Well, yeah, Reed's coming back to the tour,
1:43:27 but he's paying the price before he can get back on the tour.
1:43:30 Um, we'll see about these two.
1:43:31 I'm going to I'm going to confirm it as well.
1:43:34 I think it kind of feels like it's trending in that direction.
1:43:38 Um, again, the RBC Canadian Open right around the corner.
1:43:40 What a huge day for them yesterday.
1:43:42 Matt Fitzpatrick coming up.
1:43:44 Big names.
1:43:44 Colin Morawa coming up.
1:43:46 Bridgemond coming up.
1:43:46 Keep coming up.
1:43:47 Brooks Kepka is going to be cruising around TPC Toronto.
1:43:51 That's going to be awesome.
1:43:52 I stop in and say hi to the guy.
1:43:54 I think they're we're going to be up there, right?
1:43:56 Fan, too.
1:43:57 He's Aaron Ecklad's buddy now.
1:43:58 Yes, he is.
1:43:59 He and a pylon and then they became buddies.
1:44:01 Something.
1:44:02 Yeah.
1:44:02 Kept remember him at the cup final just like [laughter] dialed in with a clap.
1:44:07 I don't think he was blinking through the period.
1:44:09 You know what I want to do?
1:44:10 I'm going to talk to Lawrence Apple Bomb from Golf Canada and I know it's
1:44:14 for volunteers and people that do a lot of better work than what I do.
1:44:19 Mhm.
1:44:19 I want to be one of the scoreboard bearers in one of the final groups.
1:44:25 Oh, really?
1:44:25 What do you mean scoreboard?
1:44:26 So, you're just going to walk around with the little thing and flip the numbers?
1:44:29 Yeah, the sign.
1:44:30 Okay.
1:44:30 I like that idea, actually.
1:44:32 You and Ryan Fox.
1:44:33 It's not going to last very well.
1:44:34 It'll be hot.
1:44:35 I know.
1:44:35 I guess through three holes and bails.
1:44:37 Puts it down.
1:44:39 I'm actually not interested in this.
1:44:40 Yeah, exactly.
1:44:40 Oh, you think I would bail in?
1:44:42 You can do it for my for the prom.
1:44:43 If I play the prom, you can be my little uh numbers guy.
1:44:46 No, I told you I would carry the bag for I'll be your caddy.
1:44:49 Yeah, I got to find out if I'm in the proam.
1:44:51 I don't Are you allowed carts?
1:44:53 A blue flag would be That would be great.
1:44:57 Yeah, we got a blue flag.
1:44:58 It's a pro.
1:44:59 I think people There is always a sneaky rat
1:45:02 at every course that shouldn't have a blue flag.
1:45:05 They're basically playing polo and putting on the green with a cart.
1:45:08 Yeah, [laughter] some of them need it.
1:45:11 They need it.
1:45:12 But there's always one rat that doesn't need a blue cart.
1:45:14 Yeah, you're right.
1:45:15 Get a cart.
1:45:16 All right, confirmed tonight brought to you by Boston Pizza.
1:45:18 This playoffs BP is summoning the hockey gods to tilt the ice in Canada's favor.

1:45:29 All right.
1:45:29 And best bets coming up Next.
1:49:34 bigger, faster, bolder.
1:49:36 Sale GP lives here.
1:49:40 NASCAR action here on TSN and TSN Plus.
1:49:46 Now back to overdrive with Hayes Noodles and the OD [music] dog.
1:49:56 All right, we'll get to our best bets here in a few moments,
1:49:58 but the draft lottery is coming up.
1:50:00 Don't forget, we're going to be live on the air at 7:00.
1:50:03 Okay, so we're going up at 7.
1:50:05 Love it.
1:50:06 On TSN Radio.
1:50:06 We're going to be up on YouTube live on TSN's YouTube channel.
1:50:10 We're going to podcast everything, right?
1:50:12 iHeart Radio app, all that kind of good stuff.
1:50:14 wherever you find your podcast, you can stream us on the TSN app, tsn.ca.
1:50:19 So, full reaction to the lottery tonight.
1:50:21 And I have a list that I'm going to get to as well to start the lottery show.
1:50:26 Yes.
1:50:25 Terms of kind of where I want this to go,
1:50:28 who I think deserves it, but also where I kind of want to see this, okay,
1:50:31 land in the end with all these Canadian teams in contention.
1:50:34 But we are going to hit the draft ladder.
1:50:36 We haven't done this in 10 years.
1:50:38 I know.
1:50:39 Like, this used to be it was a go-to bit for us.
1:50:42 I know.
1:50:42 And we haven't even thought about the draft lottery in a decade in Toronto.
1:50:46 When we hit Toronto, he would do that, especially the McDavid draft.
1:50:50 That was really go time.
1:50:52 That was like peak peak draft [snorts] lottery.
1:50:56 Who was the GM in Buffalo at the time?
1:50:58 Tim uh Tim Murray.
1:50:59 Timmy Murray with his Yeah.
1:51:01 Remember how his blow darts and Buffalo takes
1:51:04 Jack Eel and you just walk off the stage?
1:51:06 I was told he walked across the street
1:51:08 and flicked a dart on the ground and said,
1:51:10 "Godamn, I wanted McDavid." [laughter] I'm not kidding.
1:51:13 I'm sure you're not.
1:51:14 All right.
1:51:15 Who wants to go first?
1:51:16 Who wants to hit the lottery here?
1:51:17 Go ahead.
1:51:17 You want me to go first?
1:51:18 I'll go first.
1:51:19 Noodles is going first.
1:51:20 First, go from the bridge.
1:51:21 Hit it.
1:51:21 Let's see where where Noodles ends up here.
1:51:24 Where do I end?
1:51:24 This is your official draft lottery slotting.
1:51:26 Okay.
1:51:27 Hit it.
1:51:29 Oh, wow.
1:51:29 What did I tell you?
1:51:30 What did I TELL YOU?
1:51:31 WOW.
1:51:32 WELL, THE Maple Leafs have won Noodles draft lottery.
1:51:36 There we go.
1:51:36 Vancouver down to three man.
1:51:38 They'll be sour in Vancouver.
1:51:39 They will be sour.
1:51:40 Now, this is a huge development because there is reporting ongoing as we speak
1:51:46 that the Len deal and Philly believes that if the Leafs keep their pick tonight,
1:51:52 then they should automatically get next year's pick unprotected.
1:51:56 So, there's a debate going on.
1:51:58 Yes.
1:51:58 And Chris Johnston is reporting that the NHL is likely to side with Philly,
1:52:01 which means if the Leafs keep their pick tonight, the next two years
1:52:06 unprotected.
1:52:06 Philly gets their pick next year unprotected.
1:52:08 Then Boston the year after unprotected.
1:52:10 So Noodles with the first spin and he comes
1:52:13 in hot with the Maple Leafs at number one.
1:52:16 Right.
1:52:17 Do you want to go next?
1:52:18 Can you follow that up?
1:52:18 How could you possibly follow that?
1:52:20 Joe from the bridge.
1:52:21 Bless me.
1:52:24 Seattle Kraken.
1:52:26 The Kraken.
1:52:27 And that has the leaf down at six, which means Boston gets their pick.
1:52:31 Oh no.
1:52:32 Because Seattle in this case would be jumping up.
1:52:36 The Seattle Kraken hated it.
1:52:39 That's a brutal draft lottery.
1:52:41 Nobody's talked about Seattle at all.
1:52:43 Dude, they can't The thing about Vegas since they've
1:52:45 come into the league with their win last night,
1:52:47 they've won more playoff games than any
1:52:49 other team in the league since they arrived, which is a crazy statistic.
1:52:53 more than Tampa, more than Florida, Colorado, Edmonton, more than anybody else
1:52:57 with that win last night.
1:52:58 Vegas is a crown jewel of the NHL and Seattle is not
1:53:03 the Sacramento Kings marrying the Charlotte Hornets.
1:53:07 Take it easy there.
1:53:08 Your Seattle might be good at some point.
1:53:10 Yeah, maybe.
1:53:10 All right, so here my pick.
1:53:12 Here we go.
1:53:13 Go from the bridge.
1:53:14 Simulate.
1:53:16 Give me Calgary.
1:53:17 Oh my god.
1:53:20 Oh, that was a that's a gross one.
1:53:22 The Florida Panthers have won the lottery in this scenario with my pick.
1:53:28 The Florida Panthers and St.
1:53:29 Louis jumps up.
1:53:31 The Leafs would actually drop the seven and Boston would get the seventh pick.
1:53:34 That's the most disgusting outcome.
1:53:36 And there's nothing else that's even close.
1:53:38 Like just for the record, Florida winning it would would be absolutely Bman
1:53:44 should step in and say we're redoing this thing.
1:53:46 [laughter] He should.
1:53:48 Well, in that in that scenario, Boston gets this year's pick.
1:53:51 Philly gets the next years and then it's over with.
1:53:53 No, then next year it would be protected.
1:53:55 It would It's complicated because there was a protection on it.
1:53:59 But Philly's argument is if the Leafs are keeping this pick,
1:54:03 then Boston would be automatically getting a pick in the future,
1:54:07 which pushes them to 2028.
1:54:09 It's It's a complicated deal because they both had conditions on them.
1:54:14 Yes.
1:54:14 And now the Leafs are keeping a pick that's high.
1:54:16 It's complicated, but that would be a scenario where yes,
1:54:19 Boston would get this year's pick and then one
1:54:21 of the next two years Philly would get a pick, but
1:54:24 the Leafs go to Noodles first overall.
1:54:27 Seattle goes to O and I end up spinning and taking Florida with the first pick.
1:54:34 Panthers.
1:54:33 You imagine Gavin McKenna on a line with Barov and Vergggy.
1:54:39 That's a perfect spot for him.
1:54:41 That would be crazy.
1:54:42 Flying down the right wing just making plays.
1:54:44 That would be crazy.
1:54:46 Um, all right.

1:55:02 Yeah, they recalibrate.
1:55:03 They're going to tighten up.
1:55:04 That was an that was a that was an outlier that we will probably
1:55:08 never see again or possibly won't see again,
1:55:10 but I'm taking the over in that game tonight and I'm going
1:55:13 to parlay it with the Jays picking up a win this evening as well.
1:55:16 Even without Vlatty in the lineup, he could pitch it later in the game.

1:55:20 Yeah.
1:55:21 Said it.
