Why Chris Webber Would Love to See Draymond Green Return to the Warriors | The Rich Eisen Show
The Rich Eisen Show
0:00 Aaron, did you hear what Draymond Green had to say on Inside the NBA last night?
0:03 Chris, did you see that?
0:04 Uh the part about uh Barkley not wanting to be him in a in a Rockets uniform.
0:10 What what do you what do you make of that about talking about the end
0:13 of cuz you know Barkley was talking about the end of the Warriors run.
0:17 Um and Draymond had a had a fascinating
0:20 appearance sitting in Shaq's chair last night.
0:22 Yeah.
0:23 What what do you make of that comment in Charles's direction?
0:26 I mean, well, to me, I love watching both of those guys together
0:29 cuz Draymond is one of the most entertaining, you know, guys in the game.
0:32 And so, uh when when I heard him say that, you know,
0:35 I looked at it as a joke, you know,
0:36 cuz I'm sure if we look at some of his statistics uh during those games,
0:41 I'm sure Barkley had some monster games.
0:44 But, one thing Draymond has correct is that I think, you know,
0:47 maybe it compares to an old boxer looking
0:49 at his self because I know a lot of, you know,
0:52 my peers when we look at that last year, uh you know, it's it's kind of hard.
0:58 Your body is different.
0:59 Uh sagging in areas it wouldn't.
1:02 Uh your recuperating time is different.
1:04 And so, you can't have bounce back games
1:06 like you used to after back-to-backs, you know.
1:08 And so, I think what he was saying about Barkley wasn't
1:11 necessarily just the skill cuz Barkley was still killing on the court.
1:15 I'm sure he averaged 18 or or something like that at least.
1:18 Uh but, you know, the the body tells a lot.
1:21 And for Draymond, it was really good to see him, you know,
1:24 kind of reminisce in real time about um the great team,
1:27 you know, that he's been on.
1:29 But, I I I truthfully love the back and forth between him and Austin Reaves.
1:32 So, it's been an entertaining week when it comes to the certainly has.
1:36 No, I know that.
1:37 And and Draymond's going to have a an excellent
1:39 uh second career when he gets there.
1:41 And then that's the conversation right now about the Warriors.
1:43 We'll get to the playoffs in a sec.
1:45 Is, you know, again, how he kind of recalibrated what success might mean if
1:50 everyone does stay together if Steve Kerr does in fact resign.
1:53 And obviously, Curry's not going anywhere.
1:55 And he if they if they continue to run it back
1:58 he said quote whether we win a championship or not I
2:01 think as you get older you have to redefine what is
2:03 success success may not be for us at this point a championship
2:07 he started talking about sellout streaks and he talked about other
2:10 metrics that weren't raising a banner which is something you would
2:14 never have said before um so that that to me was
2:18 the more you know obviously he was trying to have fun
2:21 at Barkley's expense the joke didn't really land but that's the thing
2:24 that jumped out at me from what he said last night
2:27 No I hear you and let let me state this first
2:30 championships matter okay championships matter whether
2:34 you're uh lucky enough to play
2:37 with the best center in the world or whether you're lucky
2:40 enough to have the best coach in the world championships matter
2:44 and and it's so hard to get a championship and I
2:49 think that's where the discussion you know where it kind of goes
2:54 off the rails because the focus should be a championship but I've
3:01 never had respect for championship chases and so Draymond and meaning
3:08 going to any team to team up with anybody to get
3:11 that championship because most of those guys I talked to are
3:13 empty because they're like damn I really didn't contribute the the city
3:16 doesn't even remember that I was on that team because
3:18 I wasn't part of the core and I think what Draymond
3:21 is saying is that if I'm a Golden State fan I know
3:25 the heart that Draymond has I know the heart that uh
3:29 Steph has I didn't want them to trade Klay cuz what
3:32 happened they didn't get better for it and actually when you
3:37 don't get better um off the court you don't get better it's
3:42 like what are you accomplishing and so for me I would
3:46 love to see Draymond retire there that would be a wonderful moment
3:49 I mean you damn near teared up when you saw him
3:52 and um Steph and Steve Kerr getting together in their little semicircle.
3:57 So, I I I really agree like what is that success?
4:00 Is it number of sellouts?
4:02 Is it impacting the community?
4:03 Is it all this because you're going to split
4:05 it up and they won't win a championship next year?
4:07 And 2 years ago Curry probably had, in my opinion, an MVP caliber season.
4:12 So, are you wasting his years trying to go find somebody
4:15 that doesn't fit into this offense that doesn't play that way?
4:19 And so, again, it was interesting to watch Draymond in real time.
4:23 You know you're going to get that honesty.
4:26 Championships matter, and he has the luxury to look and say,
4:29 "Now that we've won our championships, what are are we doing?" Because really,
4:33 if he leaves and other guys leave and they leave it in disarray,
4:36 then it's going to be like a lot of teams
4:38 that have no connectivity to those greats in the past that helped
4:42 set what the tone was in the locker room and how
4:44 to be in that community and and all those things.
4:47 And I think that's what you're seeing from him is is is is the total impact.
4:52 And truthfully, with those guys being together,
4:54 they can pass it off and make sure that whole
4:57 environment is ready for the next generation to come in.
5:01 They're part of, you know, team development.
5:04 They're part of showing the the younger guys what it's
5:07 about cuz when you have that example in real time,
5:09 when they get to practice, how to handle yourself,
5:11 how to get through the tough times.
5:13 That's more player development than any coach can ever do.
5:16 And so, it was really cool hearing him say that.
5:20 why, truthfully, I'm glad that Dame went back to Portland.
5:23 What did Where is he going to go?
5:24 Chase and get criticized in New York for not doing anything.
5:27 So, uh legacies matter.
5:28 Championships matter.
5:30 But, you know, legacies matter.
5:32 Hey, you made it all the way to the end.
5:33 Thanks for that.
