Russia and Ukraine accuse each other of violating ceasefires for Victory Day
CBS News
0:00 Turn our attention now to the conflict in Ukraine.
0:02 We're joined by CBS News international reporter Aiden Stretch.
0:05 She is there in Kev once again.
0:07 Aiden, good morning to you.
0:09 Uh both Ukraine and Russia recently announced rival unilateral ceasefires,
0:14 but it appears that has not ended hostilities.
0:16 Tell us more about what's been happening there the past 24 hours.
0:22 Well, Errol, tomorrow is Victory Day in Russia,
0:25 which is meant to commemorate the Soviet triumph
0:28 over Nazi Germany during the Second World War.
0:31 And Russian Vladimir Putin declared a ceasefire to honor that holiday.
0:35 It was supposed to go into effect today into tomorrow.
0:38 Ukraine's President Vladimir Zilinski responded with a ceasefire of his own
0:42 that was supposed to take place earlier this week,
0:44 but he said Russia went on to violate it nearly 2,000 times.
0:48 So this national holiday has created a bit
0:50 of a confusing mess of ceasefires and violations,
0:53 but it also does say something significant about where the war is today
0:58 because national the national holiday tomorrow will
1:01 not have tanks and military hardware there.
1:04 Ukraine's president Vladimir Zilinsky says
1:06 that the reason for that is Russia's drone
1:08 is Russia's worried that Ukrainian drones
1:10 may buzz overhead and threaten the parade.
1:13 Now, I am told that Ukraine is very unlikely to strike the parade directly,
1:17 but this does demonstrate a capability that is Ukraine has
1:20 not had previously to strike deep in the heart of Russia.
1:24 And you know, our viewers saw a live look at Miami just a few moments ago.
1:27 Ukraine's top negotiator arrived there for talks yesterday.
1:32 So, where do things stand on trying to revive
1:34 those talks to eventually bring this war to an end?
1:41 Well, that's right, Rust Mumerov.
1:42 that's Ukraine's top negotiator did arrive in Miami yesterday.
1:46 He's expected to have meetings with President Trump's envoy Steve Witkoff.
1:51 We haven't gotten a download yet of what might have
1:53 been discussed or what might be discussed in those meetings,
1:56 but I did speak to a Ukrainian official
1:58 today who told me to keep expectations low.
2:00 He said that the purpose of the visit
2:02 was to keep the flickering flame of Ukraine's
2:05 diplomacy alive while so much of the world's
2:07 attention has been focused on the Middle East.
2:09 All right, Agent Stretch and Keith with that update for us.
2:12 We appreciate it, Aiden.
