Cameron Young after calling a one-stroke penalty on himself
Golf on CBS
0:01 All right, Amanda.
0:02 Down to you.
0:03 Cam, a dominant performance this week during
0:06 a dominant stretch on the PGA Tour for you.
0:09 To sleep on a six-stroke lead,
0:11 what did it take for you to stay within yourself today?
0:14 Yeah, I mean, I think it was made easier by the weather forecast.
0:17 You know, we we didn't know exactly how the day was going to go,
0:20 whether we'd be starting and stopping, and you know, started with a delay.
0:23 So, it was just one of those times that I feel like
0:25 that played into my hands of just being really accepting of what came next,
0:29 and um just staying in what we were doing all day.
0:32 You're just the third player in Doral
0:33 history to win here in wire-to-wire fashion.
0:36 You told me mentally and your game you're built for tough courses.
0:40 How did that help tame the blue monster?
0:42 Yeah, I I Like I've said, I think when the golf courses are difficult,
0:46 when the conditions are difficult, that tends to make it easier for me mentally.
0:49 So, um yeah, I mean,
0:51 that's that's a big part of keeping yourself in it out here.
0:53 It's It's difficult with the wind, and you know,
0:55 the conditions weren't were pretty benign today,
0:57 but it is still a hard golf course.
1:00 And um you know, thankfully was able to stay where my feet were,
1:03 and and hit a bunch of good shots.
1:04 You're already so well respected out here,
1:06 but you earned even a little bit more respect on the second hole today.
1:10 Why was upholding the integrity of the game so important to you in that moment?
1:15 Yeah, it's just one of those you your heart sinks when you see it move,
1:18 but it moved, and um that's part of what golf's about.
1:23 I mean, there was no one that was going to give
1:25 me a penalty there but myself, and um you know,
1:28 I I think I've had about four of those in the PGA Tour now,
1:30 so I need to start setting the club down a little softer,
1:32 but um yeah, it's just one of those times.
1:35 I mean, I I I wasn't going to look the other way
1:37 and say it didn't move when it rolled over an inch forward.
1:39 So, just unfortunate, but uh handled it really well.
1:43 You absolutely did.
1:44 And when you look to your play dating back to the Players,
1:46 and obviously even before that, it feels like we're
1:48 watching you unlock different levels of yourself in real time.
1:53 What have you unlocked about yourself from then
1:55 until now that you're most proud of?
1:57 Um I mean, I think I think the self-belief just continues to build.
2:02 You know, I've put myself in plenty of good places
2:03 over the course of the last four or five years,
2:05 and you know, recently have have started to come out,
2:08 uh you know, on the better side of it.
2:10 So, yeah, just excited for, you know,
2:12 the next few weeks and moving on toward Charlotte in the PGA.
2:16 Appreciate the time.
2:17 Congratulations.
2:18 Jim.
2:19 Thank you, Amanda.
2:20 We will see him next week at the Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands.
2:24 Okay.
2:25 Following week at the PGA,
2:26 you can bet he's going to be right there with Scottie Scheffler.
2:31 How are you doing?
2:32 And Matt Fitzpatrick is the favorite for that second [music] major of the year.
2:39 His third career win, and it all comes since last August starting in Greensboro.
2:44 First wire-to-wire [music] winner since Andy Bean in 1977 here at Doral.
2:50 Our second wire-to-wire winner of the season.
2:57 When he won at the Wyndham last year, his father was there,
3:00 as you see a final look at the leaderboard,
3:03 but it's one of only three weeks in the entire
3:05 season that his family was not along with him,
3:09 Kelsey and their kids, Henry, John, and Vivian.
3:13 And he said he just dreamed of having that moment with them for a long time,
3:18 and that's what made winning at the Players so sweet.
3:22 The family was there to watch Dad bring it home, just like they were today.
